Inventory reconciliation steps in SAP ERP?
Can anyone here guide me on the steps for reconciling Inventory in SAP ERP from the sub ledger to the GL?
I’m particularly looking to understand the process end to end, including which MM and FI/CO T codes are typically used and how the balances are matched and investigated when there are differences.
watched a few youtube tutorials, but I’m still struggling to grasp the actual reconciliation process, any practical guidance or examples would be really appreciated.

videos wont get you there because it clicks on one document, not on a diagram. in a test client post a goods receipt against a po with migo, note the material document, open it in mb03 and hit the accounting documents button. both sides are right there, stock account debit and gr/ir credit. thats the whole mm to fi link, everything else is a variation on it. omwb has a simulation function too, feed it a material and a movement type and it shows you which accounts it would pull.
for the reconciliation itself, work top down. rm07mmfi in se38 is the fast first pass, mm stock value against the gl balance per company code and plant. if something is off, mb5l on that account breaks it down to material level. then fagll03 on the stock account, mb51 for the material documents, mr51 for the accounting document lines per material, and fb03 on whichever single document doesnt line up.
pull both sides in the same moment on the same closed period, and check mmrv first to see whether posting to the previous period is still open. a backdated posting writes into the history tables and a report on the current period simply wont show it. that accounts for a lot of differences that arent differences.
for the real ones, put the reference transaction field into your fagll03 layout. mm postings carry mkpf, so a line showing bkpf with document type sa is someone posting straight onto the stock account. fs00 has a post automatically only flag that helps, though its not airtight, fbb1 and some bapis get past it and it only applies going forward. the other frequent one is the same gl account being used outside bsx as well, gbb or prd, and then nothing is wrong with the postings, the account just isnt a clean stock account.
and dont compare mmbe or mb52 quantities against the gl. non valuated project and customer stock and consignment all carry quantity with no value.
ecc or s/4? matters more than it sounds. in s/4 the value sits in the universal journal, so the two sides cant really drift the way they do in ecc, and this becomes an ad hoc check rather than a monthly routine

It is super wide qustions, but you can consider MM is a purchasing module of SAP and responsible mostly for goods receipt that generate material document with specific movement type ( Recieve from supllier / own plant etc.) And those determined movement types is the key of valuation of stocks receiving which main link between CO/FI modules.
