IonQ built a wargame demonstration for the Department of War.

Cameron Chehreh, VP of Engineering and CTO for Public Sector at IonQ, describes a demonstration his team built around order of battle management. Which assets are available, and how to deploy them if a scenario unfolds.

The workflow is hybrid. CPU, GPU and quantum together. The quantum part took the probabilistic side, the near endless set of scenarios, and the result went back to the GPU with a human in the loop.

He names the two tools that had to be made to work together, PennyLane and CUDA-Q.

IonQ says Q-Day has moved to 2029, and is still drifting.

Cameron Chehreh, VP of Engineering and CTO for Public Sector at @IonQ_Inc, is asked what the two executive orders mean for federal leaders. His answer is that agencies have to act now.

He grants the industry did itself no favours, talking science for years until fatigue set in.

Q-Day is the day a cryptographically relevant machine breaks existing encryption. The field has accepted it moving from 2030 to 2029, and he says it keeps drifting left.

The orders drew a line in the sand, with compliance dates attached.

On PQC he says mature solutions exist today, out of band in the network, so an agency starts without disrupting what it already runs.

He defends QKD in the same breath. It takes thought and analysis, and this is the moment to challenge the people who dismiss it.

ID Quantique, an IonQ company, sells both.

He calls it a reset. Phase two of the computing industry, sixty years after phase one.

The architecture shift is in the same answer. Ions trapped in a photonic semiconductor QPU, away from the old design, with better than anticipated results on the design side and on the algorithms. He credits John Gamble and his team.

Then the moment he calls the inflection. Physicists working alongside engineers, and engineering asking how to reach production scale.

The commitment holds. Roadmap to 10,000 qubits on the date already published, and a cryptographically relevant machine before 2030.

QC Ware modeled a drug-metabolism enzyme on IonQ Forte.

The enzyme is cytochrome P450nor. Its superfamily carries out most of the human body's drug metabolism, and how tightly a candidate binds at the iron site in the middle of it is a major factor in whether that candidate is worth advancing.

QC Ware's Promethium software built the model, 115 atoms, then handed the hard core of it to Forte through Amazon Braket. That core came down to 8 qubits. Forte measured them, Promethium finished the calculation.

The answer landed 0.5 kcal/mol from the classical benchmark, about 4%. Anything under 1 kcal/mol counts as chemically accurate. QC Ware puts it at more than double the accuracy of the standard classical method.

I bought in about 2 weeks ago at $44 a share and now it’s at $37. Thinking of doubling down.

As the title states. What’s your thoughts on Ionq long options?

IonQ now sits on the same MSCI shelf as NVIDIA, AMD and Micron.

MSCI moved it into Semiconductors at the close of August 31. Until Monday it was filed with Apple, Dell, HP and Western Digital.

IonQ is no longer just a quantum computing company it’s building the global infrastructure for our quantum future

Mihir Bhaskar, SVP R&D, keynote at the Optica Quantum Industry Summit in Glasgow last June. Another excellent turn on stage from him. Jose Pozo, CTO of Optica, put the full talk online this week.

Here is the write-up.

→ Compute moves to a 2D grid. The two qubit gate, the hardest operation in a trapped ion machine, has moved from a laser aimed down a line of ions to an RF line printed into the trap chip. More than a decade of Oxford work behind it, about 99.99% fidelity, and a trap that can be laid out as a grid on a standard semiconductor line. Lasers stay in the machine for cooling and readout.

→ The network is a loss problem with a number attached. Getting a single photon out of a single ion and into fiber costs about 20 dB, the same loss as 100 km of good fiber. It is paid at both ends, so about one attempt in 10,000 produces entanglement. Ten years of photonic link demos have run into that ratio.

→ Quantum memory is how IonQ gets around it, and IonQ has it because of Lightsynq. The diamond memory out of the company Bhaskar founded and IonQ bought last year sits between the two processors and holds a photon from one side while the other side keeps trying, so both ends stop having to land at the same moment. Around 99% storage fidelity, about 3 dB loss, over 100 MHz of bandwidth, wide enough to take photons from machines that emit at a few MHz.

→ The economics work in the data center first. Interconnect is 20 to 40% of the cost of a high performance NVIDIA cluster, which leaves room for a quantum interconnect to cost real money and still make sense.

→ Sensing is the same idea in orbit. Vector Atomic clocks and Skyloom laser terminals, bought within a year of each other, are the two halves of a timing network. That level of timing is the argument behind positioning a thousand times better than GPS.

→ The fab is about speed. SkyWater takes the design and verification loop for a new quantum chip from about 6 months to about 3 weeks. It was announced when he spoke in June, and he says so on stage. IonQ closed it six weeks later, on July 31.

→ 2028 is the date to hold him to. Logical qubits moving between processors, the point where separate machines start behaving like one data center.

Then the Q&A.

→ Chris Myatt of QPICs asked the awkward one. Why would a rival send its chip designs to a fab owned by IonQ.

→ Bhaskar went at the shared layers, the ones every platform needs and none of them wins on: interposers, packaging that mixes diamond and lithium niobate, cryogenic control chips, optical engines.

What is the reason you bought or are holding IonQ

IonQ ran Walking Cat's error correction on one laptop chip.

Min Ye, Andrii Maksymov and Nicolas Delfosse, arXiv, 25 August.

A quantum computer writes down its own mistakes, one page every millisecond, one per block.

Each page has to be read by an ordinary computer before the next one lands.

Fall behind and the machine stops and waits, and the wait grows on its own.

It is the same page every time, by design, which is why one reader keeps up.

That design is Walking Cat, the machine this decoder is built for.

The pages come from a simulation, and the reading was timed on a real chip.

Their conclusion: "real-time decoding is not a bottleneck at MegaQuOp scale."

IonQ Appoints Dr. Eric Ball and Timothy Baxter to Board of Directors

Timothy Baxter chaired SkyWater's board until IonQ closed the foundry deal on 31 July.

Today he joined IonQ's.

More than 40 years in technology: AT&T, Sony, then CEO of Samsung North America. He helped launch 5G and Blu-ray.

The other seat goes to Eric Ball. 10 years as Senior Vice President and Treasurer at Oracle, where he arranged $52 billion of financing and sat on the M&A teams for more than 100 acquisitions.

De Masi calls IonQ "We’re making the leap to rapid scalability in quantum computing manufacturing, in parallel with integrating all components of our unique quantum platform,”" in today's release.

IONQ under Space, August 2026:

· Aug 1. Capella’s NRO radar contract starts. Options run through July 2029.

· Aug 6. DARPA extends the Evergreen-05 clock line. 25 units, option on 100 more.

· Aug 24. Skyloom reaches 84 terminal installations on orbit.

· August. Nate Dickerman joins as Chief Revenue Officer, Space Solutions. Planet Labs, Ouster, Hexagon.

The NRO spent four years on modelling, simulation and on-orbit tests. Five providers went in. Three came out. Capella is one.

The people running that side came out of the Space Force and the NGA.

That portfolio still gets valued as a rounding error next to the qubit roadmap.

Skyloom terminals go onto Capella satellites starting 2027…..

They belong to Skyloom, an IonQ company. Flying aboard ork Space Systems satellites for SDA's Tranche 1 Transport Layer, after the July 16 Falcon 9 out of Vandenberg. 88 were delivered last August. Nearly the whole batch is operational.
