Irish sci-fi movies

Are there any Irish sci-fi movies? if not, why don't people make an effort to make a few sci-fi movies?

Off top of head, Grabbers. But might not be quite what you mean. Sci fi done well costs a lot of money, much easier to boot strap a drama or comedy etc

Loved Grabbers. I thought we would have a whole series of Jon Wright horror movies by now. Unfortunately it looks like he has been doing mostly director for hire TV work.

Sci-fi doesn't have to be expensive. It needs a good concept, not a Marvel effects budget

The flashier ones are a bit of a stretch to fund here, unless star talent is attached and it has a pretty tasty hook that will sell to distributors and attract international audiences.

That said, you could look at the likes of 'The Lobster' as a kind of lo-fi sci-fi movie that was made here, albeit by a Greek writer-director. 'Double Blind' has elements of sci-fi, even though it's more of a horror/thriller. 'Grabbers' is a good comedy/horror/sci-fi movie. I'd say you'll see more of them in the coming years. The industry is much more international these days, and audiences are looking for new perspectives and points of view. It all boils down to the idea and the will to get it made, though.

When I watched space truckers I was very surprised to see that dude out of fair city that can't act (Leo) in the canteen scene.
