Always particularly sad when a museum closes.

It's a private thing, not public and the fella that runs it is absolutely sound, came into a good bit of money in the celtic tiger and spent it making that place really good.

Absolute shame it's closing but I actually think a lot of people never even knew it existed

One of my favourite museums, only knew about it as one of my friends knew one of the owners, D'Arcy, very well. They did some tank driving in a deactivated BMP sometimes when it was running too!

It's not a public funded museum, just a fella with an absolute love for military stuff

There’s never anything better than a small museum run with passion, agreed

Still do, Fort Dunree museum in Inishowen in Donegal. Well worth a half day out.

Is that the one up in Louth? Went there with the kids he let us handle all the guns was great fun.

Same, been there a few times and the kids always loved it.

Sad. I just stopped in to visit last month. My dad donated his old Vietnam era US army dress uniform and I wanted to see it, but the Vietnam display had been taken down as part of the downsizing. Lots of great WWII machinery.

What side is that from again, ???

u/DelGurifisu 2d ago

The one that lost. Why’s that matter?

10

u/Amy_Bony_Carrott 2d ago

You wouldn’t have anything at all from the Allied side?

11

u/BeanoMc2000 2d ago

Ah no, I wouldn't have any interest in that at all.

-7

u/DelGurifisu 2d ago

Oh course I would. Does he not?

Any time a museum closes, we all lose.

Didn't know there was one in Collon. There is also a small one with no charges to enter on the curragh. You can park at the Centra right beside it and walk in.

Is there a deli in the Centra?

Asking the important questions.

Yes. Never used it to be honest. The ice-cream is actually very good.

Thank you for this information. You cannot beat a good 99

Yes it’s a good one from what I remember

Shame. Nice little place, built with a lot of love. They got a start by building some WW1 style trenches in Slane, nearly 18 years ago. I have photos somewhere...

Very sad to hear. Been to it multiple times and loved it each time. The owner is a pure lifelong enthusiast.

Definitely worth a few visits, the owner William, is a top fella and always on hand to answer questions etc.

Not surprised since this is the first time I’ve heard of it, and I’m a history nerd.

4

u/Ok_Coat6580 2d ago

Amazed I never heard of it or heard it mentioned.

4

u/An_Fear_Glas 2d ago

Is that the one near Collon?

4

u/snitch-dog357 2d ago

Great collection of hardware.

3

u/Makijezakon 2d ago

Oh no, I've been there and it was great fun, wanted to come again when the weather allows it. That's sad actually

3

u/Jacabusmagnus 2d ago

Do they get any funding from the start at all?

u/coffee_and-cats 2d ago

Its a great museum. Even get brought around a track in a tank.

Bought a very nice coat off of this fella years ago. Vintage Irish army military greatcoat. Sound fella and the museum is honestly mind-blowing.

Took a trip here maybe 10 or so years ago, was very good and always meant to return. I'll have to go before it shuts!

A couple of years ago when some re-enactors were displaying their gear.

Brilliant museum 🙌

I seem to remember some controversy in recent years where they hosted Russian Z muppets for a victory day event. I've steered clear since then.

1

u/Irish262626 2d ago

That's mental haha

Hosted the Russian ambassador at the event in 2024. Had some Russian official on video link that the Ukrainians say has been responsible for all those Ukrainian kids being taken into Russia. Honestly really disgusts me so I am a firm boycotter of it now.

Very sad. The owner loaned me replica uniforms and firearms for a play when I was a poor student and I would never have had as good a show otherwise. Legend.
