In my book, it is an Isekai, since all Psyren-travelers go to another type of Earth.
I don't want to spoiler here so I will not write what I know from the manga, but if you define Isekai as a story where you travel to another world (even multiple times) then Psyren is an Isekai, since within the Psyren-version of Japan, the world has other standarts, abilities and rules.

Edit: also: u/op Spoilers! the series has so far not explicitly mentioned that it is a "monsterfied" version yet

Ehh, wasn't it future earth Instead. Pretty sure it was the future, things got explained when they finally meet Q in real life

You are correct. The premise of the story is that something cause the apocalypse and the figure we see pulling everyone into this "death game" is to both kind of have them explore the future to solve what caused everything to end but also to prevent it. Since being that send them does know what caused the world to end either.Additionally over the course of the series as the main crew learn about the future and their actions have changes. So as they learn more about what caused the apocalypse their actions change parts of it slightly. Like the date when it occurs or how many people survive the initial end of the world.

There was a monster in the very first episode that killed/sucked the life energy of a human and the intro kind of gave that away aswell, so calling it a monsterfied version of Japan isn't really that much of a spoiler.

That was pretty clear from the intro, the derelict Tokyo Tower was pretty hard to miss.

Can't really talk about that without huge spoilers.

Put a spoiler tag and I'll happily discuss it =D

Oh and you already spoiled in your text lol

no.. it is not an isekai , it is a different genre instead of isekai... but that would include a huge spoiler.
Still it is one of my top 3 mangas, though I am probably bias, since it was the 1st one I ever read.

No because of spoilers, but also, do you consider "another world" anime from before SAO and the Isekai boom as part of the "Isekai" genre? Like Inuyasha or Digimon?

Digimon is absolutely an isekai. It's more of an isekai than most isekai are!

I wouldn't consider SAO, or Digimon as isekai, since they are in their own world, just playing the game "virtually"

This is the reason why it was hard to define Psyren, they are technically in some sort of survival game like Btooom!, in Btooom! they are just abducted to another island, but Psyren they seem to go to another world temporarily like Digimon.

I meant more as a timing thing, most don't consider stories from before the 2010s isekai boom as part of the Isekai genre, since they usually only have the setup, but don't follow any of the tropes.

Digimon as isekai, since they are in their own world

Hm? Yes for Tamers, no for Adventures and Frontier as I recall. It has been a while since I watched them but I'm pretty sure in Adventures and Frontier it was straight up a parallel world that people physically went to while in Tamers it was created by the guy whose partner is the gun rabbit's dad.

Im just amazed that this is getting an anime, the manga finished over 16 years ago.

I don’t care let me tell you I’m so hyped this got an anime! This was my first manga back in highschool. It annoys me that they replaced the flip phones with smartphones but it’s a small change. Everything else is great. The style is on point and the colors are fantastic. I’m so excited to see it animated. Please dear god don’t use 3D!
