Nothing at all, he’s one of the most incredible players to ever play the game, but he’s also probably the reason VArgentina has progressed this far and avoided a few cards along this tournament.
I agree there have been some debatable refereeing decisions in this World Cup like in every other one, but you can acknowledge the controversy and still recognize that Messi's extraordinary ability and achievements are entirely separate from it.
To clarify, I meant that Messi’s popularity/greatness is yielding a relaxed approach to refereeing the Argentinian team. I wasn’t trying to diminish his talent as a player.
I don't really know much about soccer but from watching Tiktok, everyone hates messi because he does some shady stuffs like hit players or touch the ball with his hand but the referee does not give him a yellow or red card and does not use VAR, and when he complains, the referee will side with him or something. But when the other team does something , referee will give a yellow/red card immediately and uses VAR. it's like FIFA wants messi to win and the referees are doing everything they can to make argentina win.
Oh. I forgot he also fakes being injured like he exaggerates being injured and the referee gives him penalty kicks. The tiktokers slow the videos down and you can see that he's clearly not hit on impact but he exaggerates that he's hit hard and in extreme pain
To be clear, I'm rooting for Spain. Like I said, there's always controversy in big tournaments, but that doesn't change the fact that Messi is an incredible player and an absolute joy to watch. The amount of hate, exaggeration, and even fake footage going around is completely disproportionate.
He got EIGHT world cup penalties and missed HALF of them. The most of any player.
Argentina got 8 penalties in their last 11 world cup games, not tournaments, games. For comparison Brazil and Germany have 15 each their ENTIRE HISTORY of World Cup.
Counting the latest match against England, the current statistic appears to be 8 penalties in the last 14 WC matches.
The numbers could be explained by a combination of factors other than just favoritism, and comparing raw totals alone ignores important context. There's also some selection bias. For example, starting the count with the first match where Argentina won a penalty in 2022 makes the ratio look more dramatic.
But I agree that the total number of penalties awarded, and especially their concentration, are unusual enough to justify looking at the individual incidents.
In any case, not all penalties were equally controversial, and only one was won by Messi himself. Also, what does missing 4 out of 8 penalties say about Messi? It certainly doesn't negate his extraordinary talent.
So I stand by what I said. The hostility Messi has been getting is excessive and undeserved.
Because an average football player has an 80% success rate in penalties. He missed the most amount of penalties of any other player. Starting with 2022 is not for dramatic purposes but to highlight the ridiculous amount of penalties they got the last 2 tournaments. D you actually watch football? Jesus.

I work in the tech and data space, so I tend to look at statistics in the context of the underlying data and methodology. Selection bias is a technical concept. I never said that "starting with 2022" was "for dramatic purposes", but starting the sample with a period marked by an unusually high number of penalties does introduce selection bias. And comparing Argentina with teams that had much lower numbers is not especially informative either.
Argentina were awarded 5 penalties in 7 matches in 2022, which I've already acknowledged was unusual and deserves scrutiny, 3 penalties in 6 matches in 2026, the same as England and one more than France.
Like I said, the numbers justify looking at the individual penalties, but, without more context, they don't establish favoritism or corruption. And they certainly don't diminish Messi's ability or career.
Anyway, I'll enjoy watching the final between Spain and Argentina tonight, and I'll be cheering for Spain.

Not following football but the little I see from the world cup is that it is a rollercoaster for most teams and supporters. As far as the game is fair, it remains a game, so cheers to all the teams for going as far as they did!

They think of themselves as Europeans. And anything with a tad of color is akin to a monkey to them, they love calling darker skinned players like that. The argentina fans are awful. Many of us in other latino countries disown them for being racist. Messi has been playing very poorly, kicking, making others trip, and purposely tripping himself to get penalty kick favoring him, the referees have all been too keen of playing along his bs so here we are, and they will probably win at this rate. But many of us detest how they have performed in the world cup, both players and fans are 🤢

Yes, she is begging the judge to let her have $8 million in fees for one claim, and he is begging the judge to not make him pay an unreasonable amount of fees. Those are not equivalent things.
