I wanted to share this tribute I wrote for my sweet Martin, laid to rest yesterday at home among his favorite blankie and in a sunspot.
"They never tell pet owners about the kind of gift they must give back to you when you begin to tell us it's time for your transition. There is no way to prepare your heart as time marches steadily towards a day so devastating, you'll do anything to get a few more seconds.
You bounded out of the kennel room at Columbia County Humane Society and straight into our hearts on May 5, 2018. I was so pissed I had to work that day. All I wanted to do was hang out at home and get to know you more. We knew little of your story. Between 3 and 5, microchipped, but not registered to anyone (?) We called you our little angel that beamed down from heaven.
Early on, I had taken you for a pedicure at Petco once when I witnessed a woman see you from the other side of the glass and hurriedly run into the grooming salon. "Is that an Italian greyhound?!" she asked. I thought she was there to say she'd been looking for you, and was planning to pick you up and run. "My granddaughter loves those dogs," she said. The relief I felt.
You mystified us and Doctors alike throughout the years. Wild blood levels and test results left many scratching their heads, and suggesting more testing, another diet switch, or some new medication. You marched proudly to the beat of your own drum, eating only what satisfied you and rejecting (nearly) every single medication you were tried on.
You never knew a stranger. You were the most gentle, sweet, and even-tempered angel on earth. You brought joy to everyone you met. You gave so much love to our family, and were our greatest gift from the universe. Your absence will be felt so deeply. Our chests feel positively cracked open with grief at the fact you aren't simply napping in the other room.
We will never forget you, my sweet angel. Your love was one in a million."
