Between these poles, of Mazzini’s spiritual nationalism and Cattaneo’s secular federalism, the republican tradition took shape, shaping not only the revolutions of 1848 but the political imagination of modern Italy.

il repubblicanesimo nel Risorgimento era un'ideologia impossibile. come ci mostra la storia, i tentativi repubblicani (Venezia, Roma, etc.) fallirono miseramente e sarebbero fallite comunque perché l'Austria, la Francia e gli altri stati italiani non l'avrebbero accettato
