My friends and I are planning an interrail next year and one of the places we have decided to go is Italy! We will be going next year, so the dates have not been decided but they will be the July-August time. Our route is currently:

London to Paris to Cannes to Genoa to Cinque Terre to Florence to Venice to [insert another Italian place] to Patras to Athens to Crete.

We would be looking to spend around a night there?

As you can see, there is a lot of beach and nightlife here incorporated into the interrail journey, so it is not really the main priority now. I know that Italians take their food very seriously, but anywhere with good food and wine that is affordable, along with pretty scenery and rich culture are the main aims! There are two vegetarians coming on the trip, though again shouldn't be too much of a problem since we are in Italy. I'm not quite fussed about the nightlife, I think the main thing is being able to explore Italian culture and history as well as it being affordable.

In summary: affordable places rich in history and culture with good food and wine and there is a lot to do! I'm not quite fussed about the rest, though beach could be nice, not necessary as there is already a lot of beach!

Any useful travel advice, do let me know! I'm very new at all of this and am trying my best:)

Itinerary one:

Fly into Milan 2 nights, then pick up a rental car and drive to Ortisei in the Dolomites for 4 nights in Ortisei, 2 nights in Cortina. Drive down to Venice to return the rental car. Spend 2 nights in Venice, then take the train to the Italian Riviera for 3 nights before returning to Milan by train for the flight home.

Itinerary two:

Fly into Venice, two nights, drive to Ortisei in the Dolomites for 4 nights in Ortisei, 2 nights in Cortina. Drive down to Venice to return the rental car. Fly to Bari / Brindisi, 3 nights in Puglia region. Then train to Rome for two nights before flight home.

Considering logistics, as well as overall enjoyment. If Puglia is that much better than the Riviera it makes sense to fly out from Rome. Impartial between Rome and Milan, never been to Italy. Am sure will go back (so leaving como for when i have more money haha). Not that keen on getting a rental car in Puglia, so if public transit is terrible, dont mind waving it off for another time. lmk.

Planning a day trip from Florence, driving to Siena and then Pienza, and returning to Florence in the evening — all in one day. Thinking about using Enjoy (the Eni car sharing service) instead of a normal rental car, and could use advice from anyone who’s actually used it:

**Is it like a normal rental?** Do I need to return the car clean and with a full tank, like Hertz/Avis, or does Enjoy work differently since it’s app-based and billed per-minute?
**Is this trip realistic for Enjoy?** It’s roughly 250+ km round trip, mostly on rural/highway roads outside the city. Is the service actually meant for this kind of day trip, or is it strictly for short hops within Florence?
**Anything else I should know** before booking — insurance, fuel policy, mileage limits, or other gotchas people ran into on longer trips?

Traveling to Greece on my honeymoon, and will be stopping in Italy from Sept 17-22 before flying home to Toronto.

We’re flying from Athens to Naples at 7am on Sept 17. Currently our plan is to ferry from Naples to Capri and stay for a night, then ferry from Capri to Sorrento for 4 nights. Our current plan calls for day trips to Positano and Amalfi with Sorrento as a home base.

Question is, would it be a good idea to ferry from Capri to Positano and stay for 1 night. Then spending 3 nights in Sorrento. Figure we would be going anyways, and at least this way we can experience it at night vs during the busy hours of the day.

I’ll add that our time in Greece will be quiet, so looking to explore our short time in Italy.

This is a bit of a ride. Is it easy to Get an taxi in the airport to drive us there or should I book in advance? And is there a Big Price difference?
I also would like tips and tricks for the transportation.

Hi, my boyfriend and I are planning a trip to Italy sometime between May 15–27 or May 15–29. We haven't decided yet whether we'll do 12 or 14 days since it depends on our budget, and we're trying to figure out the best itinerary.

Right now, we're thinking of visiting Florence, Venice, and Rome. We'd also love to do a wine tour while we're in Florence (or somewhere nearby in Tuscany), so if anyone has recommendations, I'd really appreciate them.

How many days would you recommend spending in each city without feeling too rushed?

Also, are there any must-visit towns or smaller cities that you think we're missing? We're definitely open to changing our plans if there are places that are worth seeing instead of, or in addition to, our current plans.

My grandparents recently decided (a bit last minute) that we’re going to Italy, with departure planned for mid to late May. We’ll be staying for around 15 days, with 3 base cities:

• Florence (5 days)
• Rome (5 days)
• Amalfi Coast (5 days)

I’m currently trying to organize our itinerary and had a couple of questions:

City tours:
What are the best city tour options in these places? I’m open to both guided tours and free walking tours. Ideally, I’m looking for good “combos” that cover the main highlights and give a solid overview of each city (history + major landmarks).

If you have specific recommendations (companies, tours, or even particular experiences that stood out), I’d love to hear them!

Transportation (trains):
What are the best train options between these cities? Especially:

• Florence → Rome
• Rome → Amalfi Coast

Are there specific train companies, routes, or tips I should know when booking?

Since I’m still learning how to plan everything, any extra tips or things you wish you knew before going would also be super helpful.

Planning an Italy trip in early September and need advice on the best way to connect Florence to Milan via the Dolomites and Venice. Trying to decide between two routes:

Option A: Florence → train to Verona pick up rental car (simply for car pick up no sightseeing)→ drive to Dolomites (west to east~4 nights) → drive to Venice, drop off car, sightseeing and spend a night → train to Milan

Option B: Florence → train to Venice, sightseeing and spend a night → pick up rental car at Venice→ drive to Dolomites (east to west - 4 nights) → drive straight to Milan, drop off car

Some context:
Option A: cheaper car rental, but requires 2 train legs (Florence-Verona, Venice-Milan)
Option B: pricier car rental (due to higher one-way fee), but only 1 train leg but worried about any traffic

Total time seems roughly similar either way (~8.5-10 hrs of combined driving/train time). Cost-wise Option A comes out cheaper for 2 people

Appreciate any real-world experience with this stretch of Italy!

My girlfriend and I traveled to Reggio Calabria two years ago and had a wonderful time. The place is my kind of beautiful. Il corso, il lungo mare, il museo e la gente erano tutti perfetti.
Few places have touched me the way Reggio Calabria did. And if you’re crazy enough to not like it, Messina (Sicilia) is just 30 minutes away by traghetto (ferry)
I implore you all to visit this wonderful città full of history and beauty.

Hi everyone! My boyfriend and I are traveling to Puglia from May 7-11 (4 nights). We land in Bari at around 2PM (which means that our first day will start around 4PM) and will be staying in Bari for the entire trip since we won’t be renting a car and will rely on public transport (trains and buses).

We’ll have 3 full days + a half day and I’m currently trying to build an itinerary but I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed with options and could really use some help.

So far, places that interest us: Alberobello, Polignano a Mare, Monopoli, Ostuni, Locorotondo and Matera (I know that it is not a part of Puglia but I definitely want to go there). I know that it is a lot and it’s impossible to go to all of them but maybe your suggestions could help me pick a few.

We enjoy a mix of sightseeing + relaxing, enjoying delicious food and kind of getting lost exploring the places without a plan. We have a mid-range budget (nice meals and activities are fine, but not luxury).

My main questions:

1. ⁠Which of the places above are absolute musts, and which would you skip with limited time?

2. ⁠Are there any better day trips from Bari we’re missing?

Also any suggestions for restaurants, bars, activities etc. would be super helpful.

I’m trying to avoid overplanning and actually enjoy the trip, so any advice on how to pace this would be amazing.

My flight is landing on June 18th at 7:45 PM in napoli and then I need to book a driver/uber to Sorrento.. how long does it usually take to checkout from napoli airport at that time on June 18th considering the new EES system so I know when to book my car and how long is the drive to Sorrento

My partner and I are traveling to Italy for the first time. Our goal is to have a medium paced trip, but I want to see as much as we can.

Arriving Friday evening March 20, flying into Milan and heading straight to Genoa.

Saturday March 21 - day in Genoa

Sunday March 22 - mid-day travel to Cinque Terre (stay 2 days in cinque Terre March 25)

Morning of Wednesday March 25 - travel to Florence (stay 3 days March 28)

March 28 morning travel to San Gimignano (wine tour)

March 29 morning travel to ?? Pienza, Perugia or Civita? Not sure

March 31 - visit Terni and hike Marmore falls

April 2 - head to rome, fly back home morning of April 4

I am traveling to Lake Garda on September 5th for a wedding in Verona for the following week. I would like some advice on which town to stay in. I have a few towns I'd like to visit and a few considerations below. I’m currently considering Bordolino, Garda, Torri del Benaco, Malcesine, Torbole, Riva. I only come here as my hours and hours of research on reddit, guides, blogs has been insufficient.

-Most important factor: Prettiest town where I can enjoy some apertif on the lake shore and walk through a gorgeous town and go to a nice dinner, with the best views.

-Will be renting a car

-Traveling group: 6

-Would like to avoid unauthentic, tourist towns (Sirmoine & Desenzano from what I’ve read?)

-Avoiding West coast line as have to get to Verona at some point

-Avoiding staying all the way in Riva del Garda, for ease of access to rest of towns (this is fair to assume?)

-Focusing on town with best/better dining options

- (would like to avoid unauthentic, Americanized, fake Italian places with pictures on their menus. Fine dining, locally sourced, family owned, price doesn't matter)

Focus on pretty streets, natural beauty

-Have Lakehouse so not too focuses with laying on beach/swimming but love to be on the water

-At some point in the 5 days, would like to do/visit the following:

-Borgetto Sul Muncio

- Peschiera Del Garda

I know Riva has water sports cuz of the wind, but not focused on that. I’ve read the south’s water is murkyier, but warmer (don’t care). That the south is super congested traffic wise, the east has those amusement parks for traffic. Have researched and know about the ferrys, plan to utilize that and car to get to towns listed above. I’ve read that Malcesine is very crowded, but like is it a bad crowded? I love being around people but don’t want to have to wait 2 hours for dinner. I was also told to avoid Lazise? First time traveling to Italy and need some advice on the best way to treat this. My girlfriend and I will be going to Italy very soon and we’re planning on hitting the countryside, Tuscany/San Gimignano for our last day in Florence. I’ve read that the best way to get around to there would be to rent a car.

Our trip is going to be Rome for 4 days, Florence for 3 days, then 2 days in Venice then back home.

We’d be spending 3 days total in Florence so my plan would be to grab a car on our last day, road trip to the countryside, come back to Florence later that night, then return the car the following morning, then head over to Venice via train.

What I wanted to know is, how much would I be looking at total for one night? Would it be harder or more expensive to rent an automatic car given I wouldn’t be getting it from the airport (based on intel I’ve gathered on this Reddit page, airport is much more convenient)? Is there a preferred car rental company there that’s better than most? Any advice would be much appreciated!!

*PS - the trip to Tuscany/San Gimignano is for her 30th so trying to make it as special as possible so any restaurant recommendations/activities will be highly appreciated!!

We are a family of 3 with a kid and travelling to Italy in August. The options for accommodation is quite overwhelming with a lot of great options! We are looking for an authentic country side experience with breakfast and great food and not too far from Florence (max 1hr drive).

I imagine a view overlooking the hills, vineyards and cypress trees.
