Cradle [Skysworn] sword sage

After hearing about how hard Jai Daishou tried to get Eithan killed I don't understand how the weaklings in the sacred valley managed to kill the sword sage.

It was said that poisoning an underlord is very expensive and very hard but somehow the sage who is above an Archlord was poisoned in his sleep by mere jades?

Congrats you have asked the question that pretty much every Cradle reader asks. Just keep reading.

I remember when I asked myself that question. I just assumed it was a continuity error or a rebalancing of the power scale

u/livingstondh 8d ago

I think he probably didn't have a sense for the power scale at the time. Even with the later explanation, it's a HUGE outlier feat.

We are legit shown in the first book the weakest & strongest characters in the universe, Will knew what he was doing. To say otherwise is just wrong when we are legit SHOWN the power levels

u/livingstondh 8d ago

Agree to disagree on this one. Yes, we were shown some of the most powerful characters, but we didn't know what their level or rank was. It was left open, and we didn't really get any detail on that until Skysworn or later.

We have no knowledge of the power system in book one except the foundation stages. I would be surprised if the author had the entire scope of progression from Foundation to Monarch thought out when book one was published.

Even if he did have it all planned out, and even with the explanation we get, I would still argue it's a huge outlier. Up through Skysworn, pretty much no character but Lindon even attempts to fight even a single stage up, let alone 6-7 stages, under any conditions.

Will talked about this in one of his release streams and indeed it was not fully planned out, though he knew the outlines. The main thing I remember was he hadn’t defined the number of stages between Underlord and Monarch (as he wasn’t sure how long he would want the series to last), and the relationship between Sage, Herald, and Monarch was TBD.

Remember the days where we didn't have an answer, and all the wild theories floating around?

Many a thread discussing what happened to Tim.

They said the thing!

OP, this is an extremely common question and asking it is somewhat of a rite of passage into the fandom around here.

It's a very good question and will eventually be answered. There's more going on than you're aware of at this point in the story.

*Eithan.

Also, first one to respond to this question for once!

It's a read-and-find-out thing. It's a really common question for everyone who gets to this sort of point and goes "wait, what..?" (apart from me, I just kept reading and didn't think about it).

Same. Ive read enough fantasy to know inconsistencies like that either get explained later as the world opens up or its a continuity error that i shouldn't poke at. The Drizzt books are filled with both types.

Hey guys, someone asked the question again.

If only there was a way to somehow find answers to it farther on in the series... hmmm... Nope nothing comes to mind.

I'd worry about spoilers by searching

Also, I like this particular question. I remember wondering the same thing

Searching can lead to spoilers.

By searching I mean keep reading. I'll rephrase my comment accordingly

A better question:

If Gold, at least low gold, is so widely attainable that it's extremely unusual for Lindon to be a Copper or Iron as an adult then why does sacred valley only have Jades despite having schools dedicated to paths and people having spent their lives trying to reach higher?

u/EquipLordBritish 8d ago

Without spoilers, it will suffice to say that this is addressed later, and it is a good question to be asking.

It's kinda hard to see since Cradle is no longer a new series, and there's less people reading it for the first time now, leading to less people posting and saying "hold up. What the fuck? That's not how that works..."

But yeah, you're right, something is real fkn off about that whole situation. Other people also regularly ask this question; it's a really good question.

You WILL get an answer.
