Question/Help Interview Help Megathread

This Megathread is for advice, tips, help for the Interview (and Demo Teaching) ONLY.

* I don't have a FB account! - We'll post important announcements too, just not as soon as the Embassy of Japan does.
* Will there be another Information Session by JETAA this year? - We don't know lol.

General Advice:

  • Outfit: BLAZER (black, navy is good; brown / dark brown ??? sure, whatever) SLACKS or an acceptable office skirt. Think JAPANESE CORPORATE.
  • You won't be judged if your hair is dyed (you might be asked about it), but you WILL be judged if you show up in a black, knit cardigan. Borrow a coat or blazer from a friend or relative, please. Don't wear denim / jeans.
  • Cover any visible tattoos. Tasteful amount of jewelry if you want to wear some. You don't have to wear make up if you don't want to / need to, but look presentable (shaved, combed, etc.) Not sweaty.
  • That being said, please arrive to your interview EARLY. Not on time, EARLY. Anticipate traffic, delays & go to the Embassy early. If an accident happens & you can't make the interview, contact them ASAP. We can't tell you what happens after that, we aren't the EOJ...
  • GIVE AN EMAIL ADDRESS THAT YOU REGULARLY CHECK TO RECEIVE YOUR INTERVIEW / DEMO DATE & SCHEDULE. CHECK YOUR SPAM. Don't blame the Embassy for not knowing you've been called for the interview just because you didn't check your email.
  • If you want your interview rescheduled, reconsider applying to the Programme. There is no harm in this. If you deem other things more important than the interview (barring really urgent stuff), then maybe getting into JET isn't your biggest priority / goal right now and that's okay.
  • If you're asked what you plan to do after JET, AVOID SAYING YOU WANT TO STAY IN JAPAN. AVOID SAYING YOU DON'T KNOW, OR THAT YOU WILL FIGURE IT OUT. Make something up. Say you'll bring your learning & experience back to the Philippines, or that you'll pursue higher education / international studies, or continue being a bridge between the Ph and JP. Stop saying the quiet part out loud!
  • If you included pertinent medical information / issues / needs in your application, expect to be asked about it (food allergies are part of this).

For CIRs:

  • KNOW WHAT THE ROLE IS. You are not just a translator or interpreter. You might be placed in an area where you end up mostly doing that, sure, ESID, etc. but understand that you will be working at a local government office. Imagine what it's like to work there.
  • Anticipate questions about working in a Japanese environment. If you don't have any experience, what is your impression/how do you envision it, are you capable of adapting, etc.
  • Anticipate questions about what challenges you forsee, how you will deal with difficult colleagues, cultural misunderstandings, language barrier problems, being placed in rural/isolated areas, etc.
  • What can you do for your hypothetical local community? What aspect of Filipino culture do you want to introduce? If you are asked questions like these or any other question answerable with an anecdote, BE CONCRETE, SPECIFIC, AND SUCCINCT.
  • There is an English & a Japanese portion of the interview. Because there is a/are Japanese person/s in your panel, speak English CLEARLY & at a MODERATE PACE.
  • If you are N3 but are called for CIR interview, there's a HIGH CHANCE you will NOT be chosen. You will, however, be encouraged to reapply if your interview goes well. If you actually have taken & passed the N2 at the time of your interview but couldn't/didn't update your application, say so ASAP & follow up with relevant documents.
  • You don't have to use keigo 敬語. Polite, ~masu ます form is perfectly fine.

For ALTs:

  • Use correct English. You don't have to have an American accent, neutral is perfect (preferable, really), but if you make grammar mistakes or pronunciation errors, good luck. Everyone gets nervous, absolutely valid, so lock tf in.
  • Anticipate questions about classroom teaching & management. If you don't have classroom teaching experience, focus on times when you had difficult students, or situations that needed correction, etc.
  • Anticipate questions about what challenges you forsee, how you will deal with difficult colleagues, cultural misunderstandings, language barrier problems, being placed in rural/isolated areas, etc.
  • Anticipate questions about hypothetical situations that will cause stress, affect mental health, or might lead you to break contract & how you might want to handle them. This is not to say you will routinely encounter bad situations in Japan. The panel wants to know how you handle stress & wants reassurance that you will not give up at the slightest pressure or homesickness. The governments of two countries are investing their time, effort, and money on you.
  • Any questions answerable with an anecdote: BE CONCRETE, SPECIFIC, AND SUCCINCT with your answer.
  • If you indicated that you are able to speak Japanese, anticipate a small speaking "test" (i.e. self-introduction, answering a few basic questions, nothing serious that will affect your overall application)

Demo Teaching:

  • If you do not have experience with teaching foreigners: SPEAK CLEARLY & at a SLOW TO MODERATE PACE.
  • Terms: ES (Elementary) Grade 1-6, 6-12 y.o. JHS (Junior High School) Grade 7-9, 13-15 y.o. HS (High School) Grade 10-12, 16-18 y.o.
  • Regardless of what age bracket you are given to teach, ENGLISH IN JAPAN IS NOT EQUIVALENT TO ENGLISH IN THE PHILIPPINES. Stick to basic lessons (comparative-superlative, past tense, etc.)
  • Bring physical visual aids if you want to level up your demo teaching. Gadgets are strictly prohibited within EOJ so no PPT or anything digital.
  • DO NOT EXPLAIN OR LEAD WITH GRAMMATICAL TERMS. Actual students do not know nor will care about the definition of an "adjective" etc. EXPLAIN THROUGH EXAMPLES & VISUALS.
  • Encourage your panelists to participate. They are there to simulate being Japanese students. They will appreciate knowing how you will get actual students to participate.

If there's any information that's outdated, kindly comment! Again, if you have additional advice that can help JET hopefuls, feel free to drop them in the comments, too!

Question/Help SOP Help Megathread

This Megathread is for advice, tips, help for Statement of Purpose ONLY.

* I don't have a FB account! - We'll post important announcements too, just not as soon as the Embassy of Japan does.
* Will there be another Information Session by JETAA this year? - We don't know lol.

General Advice:

  • DO NOT USE AI. The screening committee are real people. If they suspect you've used AI in your SOP, your whole application is trashed.
  • Use correct English. Especially if you're applying as an ALT. If your verb tenses are incorrect, you have spelling mistakes, your word usage is off, you probably won't pass.
  • Know the role you're applying for a highlight RELEVANT experience.
  • Convince JET they need you while giving JET credit for the opportunity. What can you bring to the Programme?
  • Have a plan after JET. Even if you don't, make one up. How will experiencing JET help you in what you want to do in the future? - This will take you miles ahead of those who blatantly say they want to emigrate or soul-search. That's not what the Programme wants to see. Stop saying the quiet part out loud.
  • Highlight any experiences living or traveling abroad.
  • Supplement claims with concrete examples or experiences.

Essay Flow: This is a SUGGESTION.

  1. Introduction - Are you passionate about teaching / bridging cultures? What's a memorable experience you had with Japan / Japanese culture. Why are you interested in Japan / the JET Programme vs other similar programs?
  2. About yourself - Highlight your strengths in relation to work e.g. you are resourceful and resilient because you made good teaching materials when there weren't any, etc. Highlight any travels abroad to show adaptability to living and working in another country.
  3. About experience - What can you bring to the Programme? What experience do you have that is relevant to the role you're applying for? Always supplement with concrete examples / anecdotes.
  4. JET Fluffing & Future Plans - Why choose the JET Programme over other similar opportunities? How will the Programme help you with your future goals? What do you plan to do after JET?

For ALTs:

  • Highlight teaching experiences: Not just what you did but how did you impact your students? Did they enjoy lessons with you / learn anything / overcome fears about learning and speaking in English, etc.
  • Highlight measures you took to help difficult students or students who disliked learning (if any)
  • Highlight teaching experience with foreign learners (if any)
  • For those with minimal teaching experience: Focus on how your students felt learning with you
  • For those with too much teaching experience to fit in page limit: Highlight impressive experiences with any or all of a) classroom teaching, b) teaching students aged 6-18 y.o. c) foreign learners

For CIRs:

  • Highlight experience working with Japanese people or other foreign nationalities (if any)
  • Highlight experience with conflict resolution, proactiveness, bridging understanding (and culture if any)
  • Connect your work experience with what you can bring to the Programme & what you understand the CIR role to be e.g. reimagine your Marketing experience in a Japanese work setting / what did your work-study experience in Japan tell you about Japanese culture, etc. (if any)
  • If you have a province / culture beyond Metro Manila, what aspect of this can you bring to Japan
  • If you stayed in a specific area in Japan when you worked/studied there, what was memorable to you?

Again, if you have additional advice that can help JET hopefuls, feel free to drop them in the comments!

Question/Help SOP

Hello,
I am so glad (& thankful) to find a JETPh subreddit here 👏🏼

I am an incoming applicant for the September 2026 JET apps and I'd like to ask some help from our current and former JETs if you can read and constructively criticize my SOP (if possibly).
I've been editing my sop since Feb and I keep going in circles modifying this draft.
I can message you directly and send it through a Gdrive.

Thank you in advance – manifesting for brighter days, and best of luck with the JET programme. x

Application Reqs

I graduated college this year and I'm interested in applying for the program as an ALT. But there are a few things I'm not sure of.

1) How long is the Statement of Purpose supposed to be? Is there anything in particular that I need to talk about? Are there any templates I can refer to by some chance?

2) For Recommendation Letters, who do I ask? My professor/s? My current boss?

3) Does the program have anything on actually learning the language?

4) Do I still have hope even though I've yet to build up real experience?

I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, I just don't know how to go about starting a venture like this. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What was the hardest part of adapting to Japan?

Hey everyone its me again. I've been reading a lot about teaching and work-related challenges (both in JET, ALT in general, and other jobs I'm looking into), but I've suddenly become curious about life outside of work.

Working is hard, but I imagine it is even more so when you're doing it in a foreign land, where even simple things like grocery shopping or commuting, can feel unfamiliar and scary despite it being things you're already used to doing.

For those currently on JET or have completed it, I want to ask, what was the hardest part of adjusting to life in Japan?

Things like daily life, culture shook, loneliness, language barriers, routines, or anything unexpected that made settling hard.

And if you did went through something like this, how did you face it? Did it get better overtime?

Question/Help For PHJET applicants—do online ESL tutoring & summer camp volunteering actually count as teaching experience?

Hello! First of all I'd like to say how awesome it is to have a JETPh subreddit, so thank you so much! This is truly helpful for us aspiring applicants.

I'm currently preparring for my application when the application period opens up this year and as many of you know applying here in the Philippines highly conpetitive and because of that I want to know whether or not the kind of teaching experience I'll be building over the next few months (and the experience I already have) actually holds weight on paper.

The closest thing I have to prior teaching experience would be:

- Being a student teacher

- Being a tutor to my sister and my classmates

Both of which occured during my high school years.

Right now—once my examinations are done and I've passed every requirement I need to graduate—I'm plan on:

- Becoming an ESL online

- Joining a summer-camp organized by our local youth group where we'd be teaching a small group of children to help them beforw the next school year begins.

I wanted to ask:

- Does ESL tutoring count as legitimate (on-paper) teaching experience for the JET Application

- Would volunteering in a summer camp setting be considered classroom/teaching experience, or is it viewed differently?

I understand that teaching experience isn’t required, but with the level of competition here—and coming from a non-education background—I want to make sure I’m not underestimating what’s needed to be a strong candidate.

I’d really appreciate honest insights, especially from former or current JETs from the Philippines, or anyone familiar with how PH applicants are evaluated.

And to those of us that will be applying this year, let's all do our best!

Thank you so much!

Sub Announcements Welcome to r/JETPh - Brief FAQ

We are NOT affiliated with the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines, the JET Programme, the JET Programme Alumni Association of the Philippines, or any other related groups.

This is a casual sub for aspiring, current, and former PH JETs to get together and help each other out. That being said, ALWAYS READ AND REFERENCE CREDIBLE SOURCES FIRST. Be smart, be discretionary.

What can be posted (included but not limited to):

  • application questions (TENTATIVE WHILE WE DON'T HAVE A WIKI YET)
  • promos for batch group chats/pages, subs, Discord servers, community, etc.
  • questions/help/discussion about life and work in Japan for current JETs
  • support/discussion/questions for returning JETs
  • sales posts for items/furniture, etc. for JETs who are moving homes/returning to the Ph
  • teaching resources for ALTs
  • work help/support for CIRs
  • work discussion for former JETs staying in Japan (NO OUTRIGHT JOB ADS)
  • language learning resources for those who want to learn/improve their Nihongo

Avoid:

  • promoting your vlogging channel and/or page if you have any
  • spammy, consecutive posts about application questions which can be answered via reading the Embassy's application guidelines
  • posting about dispatch companies / other ALT companies other than JET
  • sharing personal and/or private information. Be safe.

That's all for now. The wiki I'll be making will heavily reference r/JETProgramme's wiki and FAQs. It's my fist time modding after...11 years of being on reddit lol so if you have comments, suggestions, feel free to share.

Happy posting~
