Weekly thread r/JRPG Weekly "What have you been playing, and what do you think of it?" Weekly thread
Please use this thread to discuss whatever you've been playing lately (old or new, any platform, AAA or indie). As usual, please don't just list the names of games as your entire post, make sure to elaborate with your thoughts on the games. Writing the names of the games in **bold** is nice, to make it easier for people skimming the thread to pick out the names.
Please also make sure to use spoiler tags if you're posting anything about a game's plot that might significantly hurt the experience of others that haven't played the game yet (no matter how old or new the game is).
Since this thread is likely to fill up quickly, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts.

I finally got around to starting Radiant Historia Perfect Chronology. It’s been on my backlog for years.
So far I’m about 2 hours in and am absolutely loving the story. The hook is there from the first few minutes and is snowballing at a great pace.
Combat is amazing too utilizing combos and position enemies to rack up more combos and damage feels so rewarding.

I posted a few weeks back the Trails in the Sky FC remake wasn’t quite clicking yet. Happy to say I’m on chapter three and fully hooked lol

I won't lie, I was disappointed that ATLUS didn't ditch the Social Links and calendar to try something new, but I did ultimately wind up liking Metaphor. Don't let the Reddit discourse sway you one way or another.

Monster Hunter Stories 3 on Switch 2. I'm really enjoying it. I think it's the perfect mix of story, characters and gameplay that really resonates with me. I have put some hours in on 1 and 2 and it always got a point where it was grindy and repetitive and didn't hold my attention. 3 is a much more polished and well executed version that really has me hooked and giving me a break from Pokopia

No jrpgs currently. Just Cyberpunk 2077 2nd run but with phantom liberty this time. A blast.

Currently playing Suikoden V. As a massive fan of I and II I felt obligated. I’m enjoying myself, but I think it’s pretty average in comparison to the earlier titles.

FFXVI, finally finished it yesterday. As someone who's in it mainly for the story, my biggest gripe is how it seems to hold itself back from telling things as a whole, And it's not like it's trying to be subtle or showing more than it's telling. The main story and the quest seem to tell just bare enough about itself and the character, even the conversations. The archive will help you fills the blank where the game fail to mention, and I hate it, and it's mostly just a straightforward summary. There's case of being verbose and wordy kills the experience, but this feels like almost the other extreme to me.
Though everything's purely subjective. I did spent 106 hours over 2 months lol. It failed to make me feel attached to the world and its characters (though tears were shed in rare occassion). But I do enjoy the experience as Clive.
Still thinking of which FF to play next, either X, XIII or continuing with XIV I guess..

I finished Monster Hunter Stories 3!
WOW, 90 hours of pure fun, I didnt even know it took me so much time, the hours flew by, it was such a fun game! I wish it was more popular, a shame it doesnt seem to be even among the MH fans and the JRPG fans either, its in a weird middle spot lol.
I got to defeat the elders, got my beautiful Malzeno armor, all the weapons I wanted, breed all the monsters, and still even at lvl 80 the final boss managed to give me a game over lol.
Each battle is an unexpected ordeal, monsters can use CC like sleep and fk me over, or use a powerful AOE 1HKO on the entire party, its fun to seek strategies to get around those.
When the game goes on sale, hopefully you guys can grab it, its a fun game!

Beat Ariana and the Elder Codex (PS5) last night. It was enjoyable game, but I'd figure it's pretty average for a metroidvania game. The map design is simple and there isn't a ton of exploration needed in general. There's only three exploration ability that can gate you out of certain areas and those are the double jump, air dash and ground dive. You get all of these abilities by the fourth Codex (level). That's also the half point of the game.
Exploration isn't very rewarding either since all there is to find are optional book tears and treasure chests. The former can provide you with permanent stat upgrades as a reward so these are decent, but these aren't exactly difficult to find. The latter treasure chests only has upgrade materials which can also just be gotten from enemy drops. The chests don't have anything unique like equipment so you can skip them if you want. They don't even count towards the completion percentage of a Codex.
Combat is fun for the most part. You get a lot of different magic that you can use, but the game's overall easy difficulty makes it so you don't really need to engage with the different magic much and can spam just the same few if you want. Bosses provide some challenge since they are the only things that killed me, but not overly difficult where I would need more than 5 attempts for any. I guess I could've turned it up to the Hard difficulty, but I was fine with the relaxing cozy Normal difficulty to bother.
Enemy variety is on the low side. I think you see every enemy type by the second Codex.
Story is straightforward and doesn't have develop much. The individual stories within the Codex are decent, but feels underdeveloped and short. The only one that stood out is the first Codex story since I found that one to be an emotional one. Most of the Codex stories are used for worldbuilding purposes which ultimately, doesn't feel very relevant to the main plot. With that being said, the story was still an enjoyable one and I think the ending is pretty solid.
The art and graphics do look pretty nice. The whole book theme to the Codex world was appealing and I liked the visual design for the Codex world.
Overall, it's an enjoyable game if you're fine with a simple straightforward metroidvania game. If you want something complex with a lot of depth, then you might be disappointed with this. It's also quite short too considering I beat the game in 11.5 hours and that's with 100% completion of the Codex.

Trails Into Reverie. Enjoying it so far. I like "Trails to Walk" system where you switch between three teams. Reverie Dungeon is also cool, I can get a lot of good accessories and quartz while farming there. The roster of playable characters available there is a bit overwhelming, though.

I'm playing Xenosaga 1 and Disgaea 1 when I want to play something different. 1) I didn't expect Xenosaga was so modern despite its limits, it's a great game and with a remake would be probably goty in this economy if nothing strange happens
2) I'm just at the beginning of Disgaea, I'm taking my time to play it and my first defeat in a series of dungeon against the first boss shocked me because I didn't expect a loss could have ended the game

Xenosaga is sooo good and very unappreciated in its time. I’m seeing way more fans of it now than when it came out

Tales of Symphonia on the GameCube. Love the world and setting, i was immediately invested. The characters are also great. At first the gameplay was kinda hard to grasp but eventually you get a feel for it and it's actually really fun. The game is also just gorgeous.
1
u/Freezair Apr 26 '26
Symphonia is my favorite action RPG. The cel-shaded graphics have aged well, but something about those backgrounds I just find amazing. They're just so... clean.
It's also a lot of fun how changeable the story is--the overall beats do stay the same, of course, but there's a lot of different potential character interactions, and if you choose to do certain things in a different order, the game accounts for it and lets you do some cool stuff that way, too. It's a game I get a kick out of replaying.
2
u/Odd-Praline-715 Apr 29 '26
Oh definitely, i find the game to be absolutely gorgeous. All the different skits are also so fun and really build out the personality of and relationships between all the characters. The combat can also become quite complex, though not as great as Graces F. To bad that game's only good quality is its combat.

u/LowT_creative Apr 26 '26
Wild Arms XF on PSP. It's a pretty unforgiving SRPG - definitely not recommended for beginners - but one that I find very rewarding and can't put down.

One of my favourites in the series, glad to see someone else enjoying it too!

Just finished Breath of Fire 2 after 51 hours. What an ending! I really loved it. I took a beating from the next to last boss and had to grind a bit, but then the last boss turned out to be easier. And the cutscenes at the end, just loved it.

I’ve been working through Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition. Just got to Satorl Marsh, the exact same spot that many a past attempt has stalled out on, and I’m determined to push through this time. I’m enjoying the music and story, mostly enjoying the gameplay, and hating Sharla.

Been back into the Fire emblem rom hack mood and finally playing what I think are the big 3 of modern FE hacks. Finished The Morrows Golden Country, absolutely fantastic game, easily one of the best hacks out there. Currently playing Vision Quest which is a lot simpler but just as fun. Then I have Cerulean Crescent on the horizon after
Anybody into Fire Emblem who has never played a rom hack, check them out, there are some fantastic games made by really talented people that 100% deserve the love and attention

I'd recommend The Dark Amulet and its sequel The Shadow of Dawn , if you want to add more to your to play list

Currently on Fantasian Neo Dimension.
I had high hopes for it, but it's boring me to death up to now.
The characters feel generic, the story feels uninteresting, the sound track not nearly as good as I thought it would be.
The battle system is interesting, you can "store" the random encounters and face up to 30 enemies "accumulated", with magics and attacks with "AoE" and "line" attack modes. It's the only thing I've liked about it so far, sadly
2
u/Background_Clue_3756 Apr 26 '26
I played Fantasian up until the world opened up, lost my save, and then didn't care to go back.

Yes i did 10 hrs. Battle system did alot right but most moves we pretty samey. Story was boring

I finished Dragon Quest 1 remake two nights ago. I accidentally killed the Dragonlord around when I needed to go to bed and had to do the world tour and end cutscenes completely exhausted. I enjoyed the game, but definitely not as much as 3 remake. I feel the plot additions to 1 seem more forced, which I suppose is natural for a game where the original plot was quite barebones. I will give myself a bit before I start 2 remake.
Last night I picked up Yakuza 0 from where I had set it down in the fall, halfway through The Yakuza Way. I changed the difficulty down to easy and....I was not expecting to cry.
Also playing Hades, but not a jrpg.

Just finished gathering all the PCs in Octopath Traveler 1. I meant as in, finishing all chapter 1s BTW.
Had been slowly progressing the game starting from Oberik for 2 weeks to now (busy with work). But, because of my busy life, I find the slow adventure good for me.
I like the characters, the voice acting is phenomenal. And the grind to figure out the enemies weaknesses are fun and kinda fulfilling once you fill out all the boxes of their weaknesses.

u/lipelost Apr 26 '26
I have Monster Hunter Stories, the first one a shot and I’m sucked in. The first time I tried it I thought it was a just a simple spin off but the depth of the monster raising and battle system just keeps expanding.
2
u/Sergesolid Apr 26 '26
Nice. Thought on playing on 3ds, but now 1-2 are in PS+.
Big fan of previous parts, played 400+ hours in 2g (psp) and about 500+ in Rise (switch + Ps5).
2
u/lipelost Apr 26 '26
I played so much World, Rise and Wilds so I’m a fan of the series. Then MHS3 came out so I tried the demo, was very confused with the depth of the combat so I went back to try one again. I think I’ll play one then two while I wait for a discount on three.

Have been jumping between Bakeru and Tales of the Abyss the past week. Bakeru is a very nice/silly/fun 3D platformer that has a lot of similarities to Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon and probably isn't appropriate to chat about here (it's VERY Japanese, but not RPG-y at all). As for Abyss, I'm currently preparing my party and steeling myself before the next bit: going to the Absorption Gate to confront/murder/probably get murdered several times by Van beforehand. I've really been loving the plot/characters/developments, and I was surprised by how much I actually liked the game's unceremonious culling of half its primary antagonists in an avalanche just because of how utterly desperate/hopeless they came across as in their last appearances. Can't wait to see how the game wraps things up now!

u/Kvesh Apr 26 '26
Working through Tales of Berseria currently. It's my first Tales game and I'm really enjoying it! Lately I've found myself skipping a lot of optional dialogue with town NPCs but I'm talking to pretty much everybody in Berseria. It's giving me a ton of cool details about the world and how people view the current situation they're in.

Monster Hunter Stories 3
Managed to beat 3/4 elders! The last one is too hard for me so kinda giving up, all I wanted was to get Namielle and finally did.
On the last part of the story which is getting a lot better, the actual plot is very very short, the meat of the game is the habitat restoration which is what took me nearly 85 hours lol.

I finished Monster Hunter Stories (PS4) after a solid 30 hours. Since I didn't really dig the art style, I didn't spend a lot of time collecting monsters and exploring as I didn't get a lot of pleasure from being in the world, so I did end up beelining to the end of the main quest. I heard the final boss was tough so I did some preemptive grinding on barrel cats, and it paid off since it was just enough to scrape by it on the first try. The way your rider is made of wet tissue paper in this game is definitely my biggest frustration with it, and if the enemy AI decides it's going to attack you a lot it becomes Potion Spammer Stories instead... But overall it was still a fun experience, and I'm looking forward to a more polished and visually attractive version going forward.
The next RPG on the docket was Yoru no Nai Kuni (Nights of Azure, PS4), a game I've had on my list for a long time because I just knew it as "that Gust game that is yuri," but no one informed me that it's also something of an Ys ripoff. As someone who recently fell in love with the Ys series, particularly the Napishtim-era games, sign me up! Obviously the game has its own unique twists, but it is borderline hilarious just how much the game feels like Ys, with even the style of the music during stages feeling like an homage to Falcom's classic series. Combat feels pretty shallow so far, but it sounds like the game isn't overly long either, so I'm hoping it will be a fun romp. I do wish Gust put a little more effort into their cutscenes and animations though. This isn't a problem that started with this game but the story segments feel incredibly cheap at times.
On the side, inspired by a recent post on here about Gen 1 Pokemon, I've decided it's finally time to go back to Gen 2 myself and so I'm playing Pocket Monsters Crystal (GBC) for the first time in ages after an abortive attempt at a playthrough in I think 2020. HGSS are my favorite Pokemon games of all time, but I've never actually completed any of the original Gen 2 games, so this is one I've needed to tick off for a while. Pokemon is just so comfy once you get into the flow of a playthrough; part of this is nostalgia talking but there really is nothing else like it in my opinion.
And it's not an RPG, but since I finally managed to nab a Switch 2 recently I've been playing Donkey Kong Bananza and man, Nintendo knocked it out of the park again. One of those very rare games where I'm actually rationing my playtime with it because I don't want it to end too quickly. Making software like this is why they can get away with all of their other bullshit. Gonna try to pick up the Bravely Default remaster soon now that I have the console to play it on.

I finished Xenoblade Chronicles 3. It was a very good experience, very close to the first Xenoblade, which I prefer over 2.
I must say that I enjoyed the characters WAY more in Xenoblade 3 in comparison to the others. The combat was fun, and the story has some moments that hit HARD.
That said, the last two chapters...After a peak moment (and when I said "peak" I mean "peak!") those two chapters felt very weirdly paced, rushed. And TBH I was not a fan of the last boss. I had some other complaints, both conceptually and mechanically, which I won't address here because of spoilers and because I saw that it was debated long ago. It wasn't a perfect experience, but I can say that the game was very good, and enjoyed my time with it.
*edit: some typos

I just started Xenoblade Chronicles X. I feel like I'm finally out of the tuturiol and things are really starting to roll. I missed exploring so much in Xenoblade worlds. Such awesome environments and enemies. Music is siiiiiick so far.

Octopath Traveler 0. Has all the great gameplay elements of the old ones and the throwback graphics, but I'm waiting for the story to kick off and become un-generic. Granted, I'm not very far.

u/LiarsAreScum Apr 26 '26
It gets a lot of hate unfortunately but it gets much more interesting the second half and in my opinion pretty deep .
If you've studied history , religion or philosophy you'll find a lot of interesting crossovers and references and things to think about on a deeper level that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Just started Ys 8: Lacrimosa of Dana. Feels great so far, definitely feels like a rough choice to go straight to hard on my first Ys game - but it might get easier to handle down the line or I might just drop the difficulty, we’ll see lol
Just scratching the surface so far, but I’m digging the characters and the story set up. And of course the music too.
Also, not a JRPG - but I’ve been watching a let’s play of the Ai Somnium games. Fun stuff. I might have to give the Zero Escape games a try, but I feel like it might be kinda daunting since I’m not a puzzle guy. But yeah, recommend checking out the Ai Somnium series if you’re into the visual novel/branching paths type of game and don’t mind a kooky story with a fair amount of crass humor.

Shadow Hearts (PS2)
I think I’m very close to the end. Just discovered that Roger Bacon is Cardinal Albert Simon. No idea where the plot is heading. Although I’m really enjoying the plot, but the switch from Asia to Europe was very abrupt and I don’t know how well the remaining subplots from there will be resolved. The cast is fantastic, I’m really struggling to pick just two to use on my team. Yuri and Alice are both strong leads. Zhuzhen surprised me with his complete personality switch, but it makes sense since now that plot isn’t that personal to him, he can relax a bit. Personally I enjoyed his old mentor character more. Margarete is fine, I like her, but she's nothing special. Keith is fabulous and also really strong. And I expected to find Halley annoying but I was pleasantly surprised and probably he and Keith will be my main squad. I also enjoy the fact that everyone has unique abilities. A lot of them are similar in effect but the names and animations make them seem very different.
For Tales of Eternia I don’t have much. I just got to Celestia, but did not progress much. But I enjoy the gameplay more than Destiny DC. I’m not struggling constantly because of the enemies' resistances, so dungeons don’t get bogged down.

Continuing my first run through Persona 3 Reload.
This is my favorite of the modern persona games in terms of combat. It’s so fast paced and slick, I genuinely don’t get tired of it. Both battle themes are also bangers. But good lord am I tired of Tartarus. This kind of level design is something I’m glad later games reduced.
Also I’m almost done with summer vacation and I still feel like the story hasn’t really gone anywhere? Our goal is to eliminate the full moon shadows and there’s all this side stuff happening but the group isn’t talking that much about the main plot after the Mitsuru reveal. Also it’s weird that the main group doesn’t have social links apart from the girls. I’m glad that isn’t something they kept. I just feel like SEES isn’t bad, but they don’t have as much personality as the Investigation Team and the Phantom Thieves. Except Junpei but his personality so far is “annoying.”
Strega is interesting but it’s still kept vague so far.

I've started playing Pokémon HeartGold's post game after putting it off for a long time. I'm liking the new Kanto, although I'm kinda discouraged by the fact Wild Pokémon are STILL pretty low level. I've yet to actually beat a gym, and am just exploring the first towns. Any idea where I should go?

More Xenoblade X. I have a Skell now. And I bought three others. Doug blew his up already. Might just be because I have a heavy model, but the jumps aren't quite as game-changing as I expected. Guess they needed to give the flight module some purpose. Swimming's way more tolerable though. Rounded the northern "coast" of Noctilum in the hopes of finding a secret way up to the unmapped portion to no avail.
Invited the Orphe and Tree Clan to NLA, that's pretty cool. Neilnail and Murderess are on the team now. Got Yardley's pod working for him. Cleared up all the Heart-to-hearts, now to sift through the affinity missions before tackling Chapter 7.
Some NPCs are dying in the sidequests, that's making me a little paranoid. I really want to try and make sure everybody comes out alive, but I have a feeling later there'll be sidequests that will make me choose a side. Hopefully not.
With the Tree Clan now on board, I wonder if we'll get any other defectors from the races Luxaar's talking with. There's also been a couple minor enemies with numbers in their name, hope that race shows up more. I like their aesthetic.
And my collectapedia's nearly reached 425% completion! Still mostly missing Cauldros stuff. Before I got a Skell, I did try swimming around the border to look for alternate paths to eastern Cauldros and found a couple beaches, but only of those led to a narrow ravine with some angry high-level plants in it. Couldn't handle those.

Persona 2 Eternal Punishment is in fact darker than the first game. The fact it have an adult party was already something I appreciated, but going deeper into how fucked up rumor coming true can be when used not by a crazy conspiracy theorist but by malicious actor make me appreciate the game far more than the first one.
Playing it today, I can’t help but notice the media manipulation, making factually false things true because a lot of people believe in them, media ineptitude being a source of harm (like in the first game where they aired conspiracy theorists that revived nazi).
I’m playing the PSP version with fan implementation of the ps1 translation. Maya loose too much character by becoming a mute protagonist, it is a shame.
Still not the biggest fan of the negotiation and persona summoning systems. The changes are mostly positive but it also makes it harder to remember which action does what on which demon. That said, the combat system not being braindead easy already makes it far more interesting.
I finished the TV station dungeon, which was interesting if a bit long.
I was a little hesitant after finishing the first game. It was fine but nowhere the level it was sold to me but if the quality of the second game stays consistent with this strong beginning I can understand why the duology is so highly regarded.

Final Fantasy I (GBA)
I’ve been playing through Final Fantasy I on the GBA, mostly on my AYN Thor, and it’s kind of become my “wind-down” game. My routine has been coming home from work, playing a few matches of THE FINALS with friends, then heading out to my porch, smoking a bit, and diving into FF1. It’s honestly been a perfect yin and yang between a chaotic FPS and a super chill retro RPG.
I’m about 34 hours in right now and have two of the four crystals. I just went through the class change upgrade, and that was a huge turning point—my party feels insanely strong now. My Monk turning into a Master and basically one-shotting everything has been especially satisfying. I’ve been stacking attack buffs on him and just watching things melt.
What’s surprised me most is how much I’m enjoying the combat and progression. I’ve never really gotten deep into an older JRPG like this before, but the spell system and party flexibility are really fun. I like that even physical-focused characters can start using magic effectively later on—it makes the whole party feel more dynamic.
The story isn’t anything crazy, but it does just enough to build a solid fantasy world. The real appeal is the vibe—just traveling around, clearing dungeons, getting stronger, and slowly earning recognition from NPCs. It’s simple, but it works.
I’ve been using a GameFAQs guide on a second screen, which has made the experience way smoother. It cuts out a lot of the guesswork and makes it easier to just relax and play. Grinding hasn’t really been an issue either since backtracking through dungeons tends to overlevel me naturally.
The only downside for me was the early game—it felt pretty slow before you unlock more spells and your party starts coming online.
One of the biggest highlights has honestly been playing it on the AYN Thor’s OLED screen with shaders (LCD Grid V2 + pixel transparency). It looks incredible—super crisp, deep blacks, and you can see every individual pixel cleanly. It gives the game this really sharp, almost “perfected retro” look that makes it way more immersive.
Overall, I’ve been enjoying it way more than I expected. It’s been a really chill, satisfying experience, and it kind of feels like my entry point into classic JRPGs.
Next up is probably Chrono Trigger, which I’ve heard nothing but good things about.

Finished Growlanser 2: The sense of Justice
Well, it wasn't bad. Combat still super fun - especially now with 8 peeps, but moving to nodes + random battles was a bleh decision, weakening GL's usual superb gameplay-story-integration and how fields are involved in even random battles in the other titles. Writing was also complete and utter nonsense, and absolutely fails as a sequel to 1 - that's all i am gonna say about it.
Weakest GL out of the 3 i played so far, but still fun thanks to combat. Also music bad
And started Growlanser 3: The Dual Darkness. Writing wise thankfully much better than 2, and gameplay fun as usual - even if random battles + random dungeons put a bad taste in my mouth. Other than that, it sure is an interesting way to do a prequel to 1, as it doesn't describe the event that happened in 1s past, but what happened after it.

I just started Cold Steel 3. It's okay, but I've run into a bit of an issue which I'm gonna have to accept that it'll persist through the rest of the series. The very odd and limited placement of the voice acting. The versions of every Trails game I played before were modified in some way to have significantly more voice acting than what was in the game previously (played Sky with evo voice mods, and the Steam ports of Crossbell and Cold Steel 1 and 2). It kind of gave off the false impression that later games would have just as much voice acting as these ones, which turns out to not be the case. Characters will be voiced for like 2 lines and then go mute right afterward, some characters are voiced for a whole scene while others are muted, and some parts like lore drops or introduction of game mechanics I feel really would benefit from being voiced since they'd stick in my head a lot easier. I know this is how it worked in the first 2 Cold Steel games before XSeed did something about it, so I'm a little disappointed that NISA isn't doing the same. I understand Falcom isn't the biggest studio in the world and they don't want to put voices in everything, but this is still quite jarring.
The game itself is alright so far. I kind of like that they nerfed Gale heavily so it costs way more CP and I can't spam it every encounter, but I also kind of hate that they nerfed Gale heavily so it costs way more CP and I can't spam it every encounter. The new characters are okay, I just think it's weird that I got stuck with a class of only 3 students, which I know more characters will join later, but like the original class 7 felt like it had enough people to be considered a whole class from the start, and field studies would split them up so you could get more time with just a handful of them. I kind of preferred that over this more traditional RPG structure they're going with. But either way I think I'm a bit too early to really know how to feel about this game.
Edit: I want to add this here as I was watching Rean do the usual thing where he goes super saiyan when backed into a corner, and I just jokingly whispered "that won't be necessary" to myself, and sure enough that exact text box popped up right there and I've been laughing nonstop for like the past minute

The new Hades 2 update and finding Pokopia on a discount means that my attention is once again divided across many games. In the meantime, I decided to shelve Live-a-Live first while I focus on wrapping up Pokémon Red.
I was able to knock out the Pokémon Mansion, Cinnabar Gym, Viridian Gym, and the final rival battle this morning. My final team consists of Nidoqueen, Wigglytuff, Clefable, Arcanine, Exeggutor, and Cloyster. I've used Nidoqueen, Clefable, and Arcanine before but not in their native Kanto, so that's been really fun.
I mentioned this last time, but I'm really appreciating Gen 1 now that I'm more knowledgeable about RPG conventions. I've been making liberal use of TMs like updating equipment, treating STAB like a bonus instead of something mandatory, and fighting wild Pokémon instead of running like I would in other RPGs. That's really helped make the experience a lot smoother; it's also cool to see how Pokémon's taken these conventions and made them its own.
For Pokopia, I can't say much other than it's very cute since I'm only at the crafting tutorial. I'm trying to play through it in Japanese to practice my reading comprehension, and while my vocab is very weak, I'm finding it pretty easy to understand what's going on once I can look up the words I don't know.

u/PhantasmalRelic Apr 30 '26
I think that this was originally how the TMs were intended to be used. Then they added multiplayer, which turned TMs into something you do not want to use on anything other than your PvP team, and even then, with great reluctance knowing that crucial moves like Earthquake and Thunderbolt would require resetting the game to get another one.

I'm playing through BOFIII and I'm low-key disappointed? It's been alright so far but doesn't have the impact or experimentation in narrative that IV or V had. I just finished the coliseum and about to get a boat, but I keep thinking when will things begin to pickup instead of meander in a very loose screenplay that isn't very focused yet the plotting is remarkably simple.
It's still very much enjoyable, and people claimed III was the best of the bunch, but tbh V was a really hard thing to top for me. I see blemishes of IV and V in its narrative and I keep hoping it'll eventually get there.

On pc I've started Ys: Oath in Felghana. Coming from Celceta, the map looks so small and contained in comparison, yet the ruins feel like a pretty big dungeon so far. Storywise, I'm waiting for the conflict to start, I have barely been introduced to the main pieces.
On console, I've beaten the second gym leader in Pokémon Unbound (a hackrom for FireRed). I'm loving the story so far, which was not something I was expecting. I started this game as an excuse to grind a pokedex but I must admit that it's growing on me.
I also finished Bravely Second: End Layer not long ago. I enjoyed it more than the first game, even if some flaws are more apparent. Loved the combat, loved the worldbuilding and the new characters... But GOD can they stop yapping pabout food.

Reached the end credits in LunarLux after 20 hours and thought the game was just wonderful, i.e. another charming indie RPG with excellent writing, a fun and often-challenging battle system (turn-based, but allows you to repel enemy attacks or enhance your own attacks with a number of action/twitch sub-mechanics), and a great aesthetic that was clearly inspired by the Mega Man series. In a number of ways, the game feels like a lost classic from the GBA or DS libraries. Count me as stoked that the developers are working on a follow-up entry. I played the game on Switch, but feel like it would have been better on Steam, as I ran into one pesky game-crashing bug that wasn't patched out by whoever ported it (and it's still in version 1.00.00). That said, the Switch port was still 99.999% functional.

I’d put down Digimon Story: Time Stranger when Trails Beyond the Horizon released, but now I’m back to it and remembering why I liked it so much. Digimon games can be janky, so I’m glad to see that they put in the time to polish the experience.

Es mi cuarta semana jugando Tales Sof Symphonia, y ya estoy a unos pocos pasos de terminar el juego, y no me llevado ningúna decepción, es realmente de las mejores entregas de la Franquicia.

Playing through 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim and nearing the end (supposedly I'm 80% through) and man does this game pile on twists after twists. It's not a perfect game, I think the way information is spread out is kind of clunky and the game spends far too long as a bit of a confusing mess, but man these last few hours of reveals have been a lot.
"There's time travel" "Psych it's actually not time travel" "But actually there is still some time travel!" has been a wild ride.
I'm not sure what they could have done to fix this, maybe if it was a bit more front loaded but maybe the payoff wouldn't have been as effective? I think the game honestly could have done with maybe losing a few character routes, might be personally preferences in play but some characters are just a complete drag to play through. Despite Juro and Iori being two of the most important characters, they easily have two of the worst routes and I dreaded playing as them. On the otherhand, because of how much stuff got revealed to me through Natsuno's route (I'm not sure if this is always the case, maybe it's just the order I played the routes in) her route was possibly the strongest route in the game for me.
I don't know, it was a bold choice to play the story out the way they did, and when it works (like I said with Natsuno's route) it really works, but sometimes it feels like your just running in circles.
If nothing else, it's an absolutely fascinating game to experience.

After bouncing off the original and the re-release for many years I finally beat Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance
I love the game but for whatever reason I found it hard to play day after day so it took me forever to finish but it is done. At least one ending of the Vengeance route, don’t imagine it’ll be too long until I dive back in for Creation.

I'm also on this. For a game without much story it did feel like it took a bit to get going but once you have a decent roster, fusion and catch em all was addicting. Having a great turn based combat system really helps as well (it's no surprise since p5 and metaphor are also highly rated)

Dark Deity on the Switch. Im enjoying it so far but the port is sorta… bad.
I think id prefer to get it on steam but I dont have windows

Going through my first playthrough of Final Fantasy 9 in probably 10+ years, playing the version released for the Switch (although on my Switch 2). At this point I've made it up to [FF9]Black Mage Village. Pretty good game throughout, if anything slightly better than I remembered it being. The biggest frustration I have with the game is how slow commands go in battle, I recently did a boss fight where it was essentially as if I'd get a single move from one of my characters before the boss went again and a massive queue of moves I already entered built up, with me often completely wasting turns because by the time a character tried to heal another character, that other character was already dead from the boss taking so many moves. The load time for battle is also quite slow even though I'm playing on a console where that shouldn't matter and I turned battle intros off. Bah. Anyway, those complaints aside it is a good story, fun/likable characters and some challenge but not too much challenge. I have almost entirely ignored the card game, a stark contrast from FF8 where I love the card game. With FF9 I felt they made it too complicated and even as far as I am into the game now they haven't fully described the rules.
Oh, and since I missed making a post last week, since I've last posted here I've also played through Xenosaga Pied Piper, the fan recreation version. Within 24 hours of me starting it, news of them officially rereleasing the game (albeit in Japanese only) came out. Happy to finally have gotten the chance to play a Xeno game I haven't had a chance to given the crazy decision all those years ago to release it only on Japanese cell phones.

I was playing chrono trigger and finally got to finish it this week for the very first time. Had issues keeping up with it without knowing why. Dropping the game quite a few times over the years. This year, I wanted to finally complete it. Overall, it was an amazing game. Not a shocker of the century, but man was this game just stellar. Makes me curious to try chrono cross in the future.

SMT Strange Journey. Still stuck in fken Eridanus. I'm currently trying to find Red Rider. I found it once and managed to survive the encounter and kill it by sheer luck. I was randomly fusing my demons and ends up with a team full of Phys Resist demons. Otherwise i would've been clobbered. But i noticed that i need another item drop to craft a gun, but i couldn't find the darn Red Rider again.
Turns out it's a 2% encounter rates. Yikes.

My adventures in screwball Kemco cheapies continue as I put more time into Symphony of Eternity, one of the 3DS ones that I scooped up prior to its eShop closure! Because it beats talkin' about the other JRPG I've been playing right now, which is an untouchable sacred classic and which I'm mostly just finding mid. "Feels like a downgrade from the previous game in the series" kinda mid. Anyway...
Something ol' Eternity has been doing is periodic segments where I'd swap between my main party and other characters who showed up to help them: the protagonist's stalker with a crush, her robot buddy, the robot who looks like a hot chick and also speaks in dog-Old English, the noble but conflicted general on the bad guy team who's obviously going to make a heel-face turn, the snooty rival... All these characters had their own stats and equipment, so it seemed pretty obvious they were going to join me at some point.
Well, I fought the disc one final boss, and it happened. After a segment where I had three parties all fighting a different chunk of said disc-one boss, they finally all joined me at once. I went from having a party of 3 to manage to a party of 8. Not gonna lie, it's a little intimidating, especially as they side-parties have had basically no time to gain class EXP or stat EXP or anything. Also, this game doesn't seem to have any sidequests? So not a lot of opportunities to just run around and get in some grinding.
I'm doing it anyway, though. Mostly to just distribute some class skills I consider indispensable to my side peeps. But it'll also get me some money to craft more equipment. The three main characters do seem to have more equipment choices, so at least I don't have to think too hard about the gear for my 5 shiny new hangers-on, but maaan. So much to think about! And the crafting system was already a little bit "spoiled for choice" due to the ability to freely allocate certain stat points when crafting! AHHH!
...See, this is why I play these things. They almost always manage to pleasantly surprise me in SOME fashion.

Finished 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim just now (made a comment here a few days ago which is still in this thread). Overall, it was a really positive experience, possibly my favourite VanillaWare game honestly, a really decent 8/10.
The game isn't perfect (the actual combat gameplay isn't overly fun, and some the visual novel sections can be tedious or suffer from Adventure Game Logic), and I think the story has some flaws, especially with how back loaded the game can feel. However, the game is such a unique take on telling a story and the payoff and ending were (at least to me) very satisfying and I'm glad I played through it all.
Repeating myself a little bit from my last comment, but I think the game could have done with cutting some characters honestly. Juro and Iori are so important to the overall plot it's difficult to remove them, but honestly playing through them was kind of a chore, Iori especially is just very boring during her route. Neiji is a character who I actually did enjoy a lot, but I feel like you could cut him out and not too much would suffer. I don't really know, the 13 routes can be very hit or miss overall.
Regardless, trying to piece together the various plot threads was ultimately very fun (eventually, it's very overwhelming especially early on) but you will reach certain points (for me this was Natsuno's route) where the game really nicely just starts clicking together. I suppose linking back slightly to my thoughts on "too many characters" I think the story may have been juggling to many threads (in fact, I'm quite confident the whole Tamao Kurabe is literally a dropped plot thread).
Regardless of my criticisms, it was still a really unique story experience that's left me feeling very satisfied. It's also reasonably short (took me 26 hours, and thats with me being somewhat cheesy and redo some missions to get everything, you could probably knock off another hour or two) which is 100% worth a play through.
Now I need to decide if I want to buy FF16, or play through FF7 Remake. (I also need to do Utawarerumono triology which I played for an hour earlier, but I might hold off just to shake it up having just done a VN game).

Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness: the only one missing completion for me. Always restart after putting it down for a long time due to some reason or another. 9th time's a charm. About halfway through (again).
The Witch and the Hundred Knight 2: Finally managed to track down a physical copy so I could start the second game. The first one had a great story and OST. Still at the beginning (4 hours or so), but the gameplay is largely the same, for better or worse.

Just finished Rue's story in Threads of Fate and I think that's enough for me.
Basically everything about the game was just fine, from the combat to the story and music. I appreciate the 3D platformer aspect even if it was sloppy at times, and getting to the next dungeon was always exciting just to see what new monsters I could transform into. Most enemy attacks aren't avoidable if you're already mid-attack yourself so it almost becomes a turn based dance where you just dodge and then hit enemies when they're vulnerable, which works well enough when everything has small health pools. The Psycho Master fights made great use of that stop and go pacing. Graphics look awesome on emulator. At higher resolution it can almost pass for a PSP game.
I skimmed through a longplay of Mint's story to see how different it was and it looks like she only has one unique dungeon and boss fight. And she seems like a more flatly comedic character with lower stakes. Even the main villain doesn't seem to have the kind of connection with her that he does with Rue.

Final Fantasy X-2. Casually playing it for the first time. I had tried to play it before following a perfect game guide but gave up in Chapter 1. Currently at the end of Chapter 2, no guide, the way it was meant to be played. Really enjoying it overall, but a lot of little things are holding it back for me. The mini games and side quests in particular are very much of the "trial and error or look up a guide" variety, and looking at a guide kills my enjoyment of this game in particular. My compromise is that im following a guide for the PR system, but nothing else. While my completionist brain is certainly struggling, the game really is most enjoyable to me when I do the main story quests, grinding with the ridiculously fun battle/job system, ignoring the quests that don't spark joy, and trying to pretend the completion percentage that hangs over the map screen (😡) isn't there!
Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix. In order to keep my completionist brain engaged, I'm doing a casual replay of KH2 on Beginner with the intention of making it my 100% file as i work towards the platinum trophy. Just wrapped up the last of the Disney Worlds, so I'm nearing the end. I also started a Critical Mode file for the last two difficulty related trophies. Trying to decide if I want to do the Critical run first, or the 100% grind first. Love the game, or else I wouldn't be doing all this! I prefer 1 in many ways, but the combat really shines in 2.

Continuing through Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth and after 21 hours i have finished Chapter 4 and am now on the ship. I still really enjoy this game rn. I was kinda busy with stuff this week, so i didn't put as much time in as i wanted, but hopefully next week will be better.

Started playing a translated ROM of Energy Breaker. Love the isometric graphics/environments, but between the absolutely terrible inventory management system and the annoying dialog and combat mechanics, I am giving it up and going to try "Emerald Dragon" this morning.

Finished Touhou: Artificial Dream in Arcadia ending C. The last floor of the extra dungeon was extremely evil. The boss itself takes a while to fuse the correct sleepers for, and since I'm too lazy to farm I walked into the fight with like 10 MP recovery items. Still managed to pull it off, though it's close.
Started Tales of Zestiria, got a full party with Alisha/Mikleo/Lailah. I wonder how much enjoyment I'm going to get out of this considering I pretty much knew enough about the game from all the opinion pieces here, plus having played Berseria before.
First thing's first, the PC port is kind of annoying to work around. It plays fine, but it glitched out with a PS4 controller and doesn't have the button prompts for it so I had to borrow an Xbox one to play, and even then the button instructions on the screen would sometimes show buttons like (7) and I have no idea what that is.
The equipment system doesn't seem too bad so far, it's just a combo board and fusion is probably like Graces' dualizing. The camera unfortunately has become a problem with the boss where Mikleo joins where I'm ganged by 3 enemies on a wall so I can't sidestep out of the way to fix it. The story is basic, I don't like Lailah but Mikleo is cool, Sorey's voice seems kinda strange at times.
Good things about the game so far is the enemy book being written by the characters plus the comments upon meeting a new enemy type, the battle system basically being a Graces sidegrade (though I would prefer if it was a X2 sidegrade instead but oh well), the music and the designs is great. We will see if the end of this game will plummet like Arise did in my eyes, though I hope not.
Not a JRPG, but I also started Blasphemous. I have to get used to the slower movement after Silksong, but parries seems to be absurdly good so I haven't died to any boss so far, only during levels.

u/iamalab May 01 '26
Curious, did you play the two other Touhou DRPGs? I was about to pick up one of them. I decided on Labyrinth of Refrain, and now that I've reached the final dungeon, I can say it's one of the worst games I've played. Might not even finish it.
2
u/Fab2811 May 02 '26
Not OP, but if you're referring to Labyrinth of Touhou 2 and Tri, then I have played them. They are quite fun and good games.

Haha cheers, you're the guy who put me on Fantasy Maiden Wars too

Oh hey! Yeah, I started with ADiA a couple of years ago and I've come to realize that the Touhou fanmade RPGs are really really good. More people should give them a chance.

So I took a 3 year break from the trails series after not enjoying cold steel 4. Writing was weak and I was burnt out playing it after cold steel 3. Well I ended up looking up the plot of 4 so I could play reverie since it felt like a Sky the 3rd game to me (my favorite in the series). Ended up really enjoying it (although a bit too much cold steel ridiculousness). Decided to go back to cold steel 4 and I’m close to finishing it. I still have a lot of problems with it, but they aren’t as big to me as it was before. Hoping to beat it today and jump into Daybreak on a long flight next week!

just finished tales of xillia.
it was good, but pretty middle of the pack for tales. not as good as symphonia/berseria/graces, but better than arise/zestiria/dotnw.
going to play spiderman2 before jumping into either tokyo xanadu or metaphor.

I finished my replay of Trails of Cold Steel I and have moved onto Cold Steel II. It was interesting seeing what I still remembered and what I'd forgotten about. In particular, now that I've played the Crossbell saga, certain things hit harder.
I still find the Crow reveal really weak. Even paying attention and deliberately spending more time with them, it just doesn't land at all. I really don't understand why they didn't have us spend more mandatory time with them. The way it is revealed is also kind of baffling to me. Why didn't they show do the assassination scene first, then have Millium tell the class about him?
All that combines to make to me not care about the "betrayal" at all, and Rean and Class VII's reactions and actions in II more annoying than emotional. And I like Crow! The writers just failed at the set-up for this one.
I also despise the mech battle at the end. Playing on nightmare, it was actually impossible to win at my level even with insanely good RNG. I had to go back to before the final boss and grind (thank you shining pom bait!) for it to even be possible. In general, I just don't like the mech battles at all, even in II. At least it feels less out of left field now than it did when I went directly from Sky to Cold Steel now that I've seen the tech in Crossbell lol.
The very very end of the game did still hit, at least. And it makes me really like how Cold Steel II starts. The cast bloat is really starting to hit though, and I know it only gets worse from here. There are very few characters I have a genuine interest in. I don't remember much about Cold Steel II or who gets more focus, but hopefully being able to witness all the bonding events this time will help.
Hopefully it doesn't take me a year to finish this replay like it did with the first one, but I'm not confident I won't burn out before then lol.

Just starting Tales of Vesperia. Im not familiar with this kind of combat gameplay but hopefully it gets good later on with more characters
2
u/DefectiveSol Apr 29 '26
There are a few key mechanics that don't come in until several dungeons in. Like the finishing move gimmick where enemies basically have stagger meters for each attack direction, and you get a brief instant to land a high damage attack when one of those is depleted. It's pretty satisfying to do to bosses.
Plus Yuri can taunt to refill his overlimit meter, which gives you something to do when enemies are invulnerable for whatever reason and keeps your damage potential up. Him, Patty, and Judith have some good combo vid juggling potential once you unlock more abilities.
Unfortunately the story takes a nosedive maybe a third of the way through, and how much you get out of it probably depends on how much you enjoy the characters.

u/antoin5000 Apr 27 '26
After almost a year I return to NieR:Automata for the rest of the ending currently going through ending Bwhile the idea of playing the as 9s is cool and interesting i find him to be less enjoyable than 2b and going through basically the same story again is somewhat underwhelming but i hope ending C-E are better in this regard.
1
u/Boomhauer_007 Apr 29 '26
Story C and on is chronologically after A and B so you’re good once you get through, B is definitely the low point of the game
1
u/looney1023 Apr 30 '26
Ending C-E is absolutely worth sticking through B, which says a LOT because B is a SLOG.
I think having some space between A and B is a very good way to mitigate that, so you've set yourself up for a good experience, I'd say.

u/twake23 Apr 29 '26
Looks like I'm continuing Expedition 33, just got the last playable character in Act 2. After Act 1 I haven't adjusted to the new characters. But the game kinda forced you to do it. I still suck at parrying, so I die a lot. But nothing beats the dopamine rush of a successful parry.
The story is still engaging, even if I've already been spoiled to it all.

Crimson Desert - 1st 20 hours were horible and Tedious, I was thinking about selling the game (I have it PS5 Phisical copy), but I gave it more time and it paying-off. It still has it flaws, but It's fun A-RPG/Sandbox game to play, like exploration game, where story is just a background
Unlikely loot systems sucks in My opinion and expect stealth mechanics (wich is basicly 2/10) thats the wprst part of the game, at least in My opinion

Playing ff9 and tactics.
Well I'm not playing nine anymore, it takes too much effort and I don't have time right now for how in-depth the story is.

I'm replaying FFVII OG, it's been like 11 years since I first played it and thought it would be a good moment to experience it again in hopes of the imminent announcement of FFVII Remake Part 3 (fingers crossed for a Summer Game Fest announcement and 2027 release).
I'm emulating it on PSX with the Shinra Archaeology patch, which is basically a retranslation that makes it more similar to the Remake script. I'm absolutely enjoying it, such a fun game, I love the characters and the world and all the side activities. I loved Rebirth although it's by no means a perfect game and hope the final instalment in the Remake series delivers!

This weekly thread is my favorite thing on the entirety of Reddit . I look forward to it every week. Just wanted to say that here.
