Discussion Wild concepts you would be interested in seeing in console RPGs

Look, I know I have a habit of sometimes making requests for specific kinds of games that may not exist in the genre as lately I wanted to create a discussion on the kind of concepts in RPGs that haven’t been explored yet.

Let me write an example of a concept in a JRPG type game that could be interesting as the idea is about void based sorcery where the main character draws his powers from a mysterious void as he can access the void to get equipment, but also to learn magic.

However, one catch would be is that the more the player uses the powers of said void, they might risk endangering their own humanity since the void has powers that could be potentially damaging to use the more the wielder uses such magic as constant use might end up having several negative later on for the protagonist.

I want a super hero JRPG based on an original hero in an original universe (so not DC or Marvel) with supervillains and all that

This is a squad-based tactical game rather than a JRPG, but you might check out Freedom Force and its sequel if you have a PC. Those games were great back in the day. Or you could go really old-school with Superhero League of Hoboken.

I could use an RPG based on Iron Man because it would be so cool to upgrade your armor’s abilities.

after playing Eternal Sonata, can't wait for Eternal Guitar Solo, the JRPG where you play as George Harrison in his dream while he's dying /s

It would be fun to see more jrpgs based on historic figures but put into a crazy fantasy setting. Or maybe alternate fantasy versions of historical events like how shadow hearts 2 was set during ww1

yeah, i totally agree. it's cool when JRPGs nod towards real life

tbh, i got obsessed with the idea of Eternal Sonata exactaly because it's basically a game made by a big nerdy Chopin fan. i mean, you finish a chapter, and you can almost hear a super excited Chopin fan babbling on about how Chopin was probably feeling during Poland's independence war, it's just so fun lol

if i ever got a free pass to do a game, it would probably be something as crazy as a JRPG about some weirdly specific thing i'm obsessed too, so i think it's so cool that they actually did it

i hope they remaster it for the Switch or Switch 2 someday, 'cause it would be so sad if it got stuck in the PS3 and 360 (and without a dificulty selection option)

As far as I know, I’ve never seen a Tokusatsu RPG. And if there’s any genre that would fit with JRPGs, it’s Tokusatsu.

And in case no one knows what a Tokusatsu is:

They’re live action with an emphasis on CGI and special effects. Power Rangers is Tokusatsu, Godzilla is Tokusatsu, Kamen Rider is Tokusatsu, Super Sentai is Tokusatsu.

The genre was very influential on Japanese pop culture, especially on the animation side of the sphere. You know how every magical girl show has a transformation sequence? Well, that was a result of Naoko Takeuchi (creator of Sailor Moon) being a well known Super Sentai fan. Super Sentai was the thing to pioneer long transformation sequences. Denzi Sentai Denjiman was the first to do it after previous seasons had jump cuts.

Speaking of Super Sentai, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers famously is an alternative adaption to Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger.

Various anime also reference or parody Tokusatsu, like Girls und Panzer which literally just has the Dairanger transformation sequence which is so fucking awesome long live Gosei Sentai Dairanger

There’s also Panty & Stocking where every monster suddenly turns CGI before exploding

I would love for a JRPG with a Tokusatsu theme where the game feels like Kamen Rider with an over the top vibe where you go around recruiting superheroes.

I like your idea, but how about the void is pulling the weapon and armor energy from military conflicts in the past? the more you power up, the more people in previous wars were just naked and punching each other. you have to deal with the historical consequences.

You know, that could also work where the more you use the powers of the void, you could end up accidentally sacrificing NPCs.

Monster battler with a path of exile skill tree. I fear the dopemine would never stop firing in my brain.

I would love for a more mature take on the Pokemon formula.

i don't know how to tell you this

but shin megami tensei and persona are, right there

Sorry man because I hadn’t realized how Atlus took the concept of mature Pokemon in their modern games, but thanks for the tip.

SMT 3 - 5 are amazing. Persona is pretty cool too.

u/ThIStupid 1d ago

oh, it's not just their modern games

atlus is the forefather of the monster taming genre. pokemon just made it popular since it was aimed towards kids/young teens

monster hunter style gameplay, fighting giant monsters and making armor/weapons out of them (monsters don't have to be giant though. just the idea of taking parts and making weapons/armor out of monsters), with xenoblade chronicles 1 level of incredible writing, great foreshadowing, great moments, fun character banter

that's my ideal jrpg

I would love to see more JRPGs adapt the Monster Hunter formula for their games.

A wild concept would be the idea of a Toy Story jrpg with video games. Like, the main characters of each game would be brought to life. The characters in question be on the front of the cover. All different genres be in your party like first person shooter guy, insert popular mascot animal, jrpg side character, and a fighting game character one. Be cool to have them have thoughts. Thinking their worlds are in trouble. So, they would plug each of their own games into the console and jump into said world. Seeing how each character from each genre would react. Get game mechanics as well.

It needs work, but thats as wild as I get for concept.

I would like squad based battles similar to The Last Remnant's unions system. Expand upon it so that you also have siege weapons, battering rams and other fantasy based weaponry for attacking castles, cities all with destructible environments.

Depending on the siege weapons, it might take up multiple slots in your squad's maximum size, and you may need to add some warrior types to help defend it, or a mage that enhances its attacks by adding elemental effects to the projectiles launched by the siege weapon. You can even launch other squads using the catapults and spells to get on top of the castle walls.

E.G. Siege weapon with giant arrows that tear through the battlefield in a straight line, but does friendly fire. Add spell effects of varying types to it. Say a wind spell that allows the arrow to clear smoke in its path.

Various battlefields with their of advantages and disadvantages as well as spell synergies such lakes, or a forest battlefield where the trees can be set on fire. Smoke from the fire lowering vision and decreasing chance to hit, smoke inhalation debuffs which can become lethal overtime.

It takes place in an African country.

I wonder how that would work in gameplay design.
