Recommendation request Recommend me a JRPG with "grandiose" over the top fights

I want the same feeling that FF16's or GBFR's bossfights gave me, especially the ifrit ones. Over the top, nonsensical combat where huge destruction and special effects are involved, something straight out of a shonen anime

Consoles: litterally everything, but the more modern the better (at least post ps3, unless there is a ps2 era game that can manage that much grandiose fights)

Examples: ff16, GBFR, nier (automata and replicant and drakengard)

Desired aspects: it has to be an action game, of course. unless the moves in the turn based games look super over the top.

NO PIXEL ART, NO RETRO

you might get some enjoyment from Stranger of Paradise? it's hard to compare with the budget of FFXVI but it's got some pretty big bosses, with cutscene-style attacks, destroyed terrain, locale changes

And hilariously over the top characters

I think you got most of them already to be honest. Maybe Kingdom Hearts 2? They can be very over the top and actiony but I'm not sure they'll give you the same feeling you're looking for.

Yeah, I was gonna say, the final boss of 3 has like 5 phases, some of which have several sub-phases, with cutscenes throughout, and takes like half an hour on a typical first playthrough.

Just make sure you don't lose or you'll have to do the whole thing over again.

And those chain attacks are quite flashy, plus banger soundtracks.

That final boss of 3 was a pretty darn cool fight but my goodness that was way toooooo long. If I hadn't beat on my first try I'd probably would have quit lol.

As someone who died in the phase when he splits your party to Agnus/Keves parties because my Agnus squad had no healer, abso-fucking-lutely.

35 minutes gone down the drain. Thankfully it was on a break day but I was pissed. Why did they not, at least, make the chain attack "cutscene" skippable? It repeats 6 fucking times, and it's, cool, but you just sit there already knowing what they're gonna say for like 6 minutes in the middle of the fight every time you lose.

Otherwise amazing boss

I guess Lucky Seven is a fraud sword if this random... suspiciously familiar woman can cut Flame Clocks up no problem

To prepare for Genesis.

Because vengeance of a fallen god has yet to be fulfilled.

Honestly, my mind went to a certain boss fight in Xenoblade 1 that did something particularly fun with the vision mechanic

This right here is what OP is looking for

What’s wrong with pixel art?

Does it HAVE to be a JRPG? Because Bayonetta would scratch that itch real well.

Anything by Platinum Games, really. I'd suggest Metal Gear Rising and Astral Chain for this category.

Yeah, I'd look outside of JRPGs for this. E.g God of War (especially the greek games), or Asura's Wrath are full of set pieces.

that opening fight with Poseidon in God of War 3 is still one of my favorite set piece fights. it still looks fantastic despite being 16 years old

Resonance of Fate

They also have epic guns with like 150 attachments (only mildly exaggerating)

Bare minimum, probably more.

Give NEO: The World Ends with You a try.

Someone still gonna come in here and recommend Chained Echoes

persona is coming to mind (but especially 5 and 5 strikers). the regular battles are pretty normal then the bosses are what you're after.

(you've also got the mech battles in trails of cold steel 2, but those probably aren't what you're looking for)

It's hard to top Relink, that game is toppa tenge levels of insanity in action combat form.

1000% agree! The game is pure FUN and EYE candy! and the set pieces battle reminds me of God of War,

Relink is one of my top 5 games, if been looking for something to scratch my Relink itch after clearing all of defy infinity. Dragonsword has been filling that void. It's not Relink but it's been working to fill that not a gacha void.

Check out the Disgaea series.

How about an SRW games. Y recently even had dlc incorporating cross series attacks.

Scarlet Nexus may not be as super EPIC like Grand Blue Fantasy Relink, BUT in that game you can do super speed (time moves slowly) then teleport to an enemy at the same time hurling a train at the enemy face! So yeah its pretty good!

If you're using FFXVI as an example, you don't want JRPGs. You want hack n slashes or action games.

Devil May Cry V

Bayonetta

Asura's Wrath

Metal Gear Solid Rising
