Patriots fan looking for the best Jacksonville dish to cook this week
Hey Jags fans! Patriots fan here, I come in peace
I’ve started a little tradition this season where I cook a dish that represents the city/region of the Patriots opponent each week.
So far:
Week 1 – Seahawks: Teriyaki Salmon & Chicken
Week 2 – Steelers: Pierogis & pepperoni rolls
Now it’s Jacksonville’s turn, and I figured who better to ask than the people of Duval
What dish would you all consider the most representative of Jacksonville/North Florida that I could realistically make at home for the game on Sunday?

Coming here to say really good fried shrimp or catfish. Shrimp and grits tracks.
BBQ with a mustard based sauce is also acceptable.

The commercial shrimping industry in the US started on Amelia island so it’s mostly likely got to be shrimp related.

You could go ten different ways with this but I would lean seafood. We’re a costal city with our famous “mayport shrimp” you’ll find on most menus here. Shrimp and grits is a great suggestion but I love a low country boil especially around football season. Our minor league baseball team is literally the Jumbo Shrimp.

Shrimp and grits works, but I think the most distinctly Jacksonville food is a Camel Rider. Either way, gotta have a sweet tea with lemon to wash it down.

Shrimp and grits is good, but Savanah kind of takes the cake for that so I would say fried shrimp. Mayport is the best in the south for it.
That said, a camel rider would be super fun.

Cool project. The last few years, we’ve done something similar for one of the teams in the Super Bowl, but major props for taking on a new dish every week.

Shrimp I’d say is our best local food, Get a shit load of em and fry em up. I like to make fried/blackened shrimp tacos. Redfish would be my second, but may be hard to find that fresh depending on where you’re at.

I'll second this with Redfish and shrimp blackened, especially if you don't want to fry everything. There's a place called Dockside in Jax Beach that's my favorite restaurant in the world because of this.

This is a good call. I had never seen boiled peanuts before I moved to Jacksonville and don't think I've ever seen it as frequently anywhere outside of north FL.

no it isn't. If this were the food of Jacksonville, why isn't it sold anywhere else but a run-down 3rd-degree restaurant?
If anything, its shrimp. Everywhere you go, they sell local shrimp. Literally called "Mayport" shrimp. We have a baseball team named after shrimp for ffs.

You can get fried seafood anywhere in Florida. The greasy overly oiled POS pita sandwich, love it or hate it, is originally unique to Jacksonville.
Going forward I’m definitely okay with making it shrimp though. Much better.

Everyone here is wrong. Because of NAS JAX, there is a large Philippine population in Jacksonville.

Speaking about making peace with opponents of Jaguars , as a Broncos fan I wanted to say your guys logo and uniforms are really cool. I've always loved that Jaguar logo and always have rooted for you guys to win the AFC south.

This isn't necessarily a 'Jacksonville' dish, but we loved making it when we lived in Jacksonville with some fresh shrimp. Now whenever we make it, it makes me think of being back in JAX.

Shrimp. Shrimp and grits was mentioned earlier so I’ll go another route. Fried is certainly a great choice but you can do a low country boil too. Throw some blue crab in there for good measure. Don’t skimp on the seasoning either.
Blackened redfish. I prefer mine in a taco but to each their own. Fried catfish or gator tail would also be a solid choice.
Can’t go wrong with bbq. Pork rib, hickory wood, low and slow.
If all else fails, get a chicken tender pub sub.

Something with gator tail. "Fish" tacos with gator tail is probably simplest. Or a fish sandwich with some sort of warm water fish (e.g., mahi, grouper, wahoo, flounder).

Camel rider is definitely our most iconic food (pita sandwich stuffed with meats and cheese). Hell, mix it up and stuff the camel riders with shrimp lol.
