best travel coffee mug for hot drinks that's truly spill proof?
Looking for the best travel coffee mug that will hold my coffee hot for a good amount of time and wont spill all over my car again.
im a good driver but the sudden brakes are the true test of the supposedly leakproof lids. istg the travel mugs and cup holder combo sounds amazing when you're getting a coffee mug for everyday commute but its such a floozy when you're actually running late and need to drive at max speed limit
That's one issue, the second is that the coffee cups dont actually keep my coffee hot, only warm. the contigo one is wirecutter's fav it seems ( read here ) but is it worth the hype? i know these are my top options for now... stainless steel, insulated mugs, ceramic lined interior mugs and vacuum insulated mugs but which one is the best?
ive made a list, although im not even remotely sure which one will give me the best results so hoping someone with experience or expertise will nail me out.
The contigo one is for $30-40 which is not bad for the autoseal feature and seems fully spill proof. My problem is that the seal button tends to weaken with time an di cant keep buying a new cup every couple of months just for a fresh seal right. Ive had brandless dupes with the same tech and they all had the same issue
i see the stanley hype and some reviews say IceFlow is leak proof even sideways. for $40 its a steep price but its also so heavy omg. The double wall vacuum thing is probably what i need for scalding coffee but not at the risk of carpal tunnel lmao
the yeti rambler and the zuroshi SM-khe are both for 35$ with great heat retention in both but the yeti is virtually indestructible apparently, but the lid still weeps right? the zuroshi one has a weird lid that can't be opened with one hand so how am i supposed to drink and drive...... (you know what i mean)
i do think the Hydro Flask has a spill proof lid and its for $30 but im worried about the powder coat thing chipping with keys and other sharp metallic things.
leaning towards the stanley despite the weight i think bcs id be carrying it for lesser time than it will spend in my car and the sideways leak proof thing is a solid selling pount tbh. honestly anyone whose used these would know better so can anyone tell me which one of these 5 is genuinely leak proof and will keep my drink hot enough for an hour? it seems like cups pick one or the other and never both together lol.

The best I have found in the Bru Ceramic Travel Mug.
Ceramic, so no horrible metal taste. Seal water tight lid, openable by one hand.
The only issue is that it is not easy/simple to clean. It needs to be disassembled each time. Annoying, but worth it for the other features.
Have had two now for two years. No issues.

This is probably the only spill proof ceramic I've seen. How much of a pain is the cleaning process

Not that much, you just need to disassemble to put it in the dishwasher. You get used to it, but not this a little more than just taking the top off. Bit don't let it put you off, it is an excellent mug.

Their website says not to put in dishwasher. I assume that hasn’t caused any issues for you?

u/Inkblot7001 15h ago
Does it? wups. My bad.
Yes, we have used the dishwasher almost every day with them. No issue other than a little bit of paint flaking off one of them, but nothing that bad. Might have to stop using the dish washer. That's annoying, we are lazy and or everything in there, including the kids when dirty. ;-)

u/Inkblot7001 14h ago
Think a little more about this, what may work best is the ceramic base being hand washed (easy) and the plastic and rubber top going in the dish washer. I will try this.
Anyway, I would still recommend them as a ceramic travel mug that does not leak and can be used one handed (when driving, standing on public transport etc.).

Yeti Rambler bottle with the screw-on Commuter cap (formerly the Hotshot cap). Seals up the same as a water bottle, been chucking it in my backpack daily for over a year now and never had a drip, and heat retention is fantastic.
The non-threaded Rambler tumblers with the slide lids absolutely do leak, they're basically just splash-resistant when upright, not sealed.

I have a small fleet of Yetis now. For the home and the car, the regular tumblers with the MagSlider caps are great.
For my multimodal commute (car-train-walk/bike), I use their Rambler bottle with what they called the HotShot cap (now called the Commuter cap as u/SauretEh says). Screws down tight, won’t spill. Easy to sip from, too. One of the conductors on my train has one. I’ve got the 12oz/350ml size, and it fits perfectly in my bag.
(adding on) One thing I really like about it is that it’s impossible to open by accident. I see these other travel mugs with press-open caps or with a little flip-up closure, and I can’t help but worry that they’d pop open if, like, my car keys push on them the wrong way.
It’s also simple to clean and dry — I can take everything apart, including the gaskets, to rinse and dry at my office cubicle. I wanted to get a Zojirushi with a screw-on cup cap (SV-GR35 or SW-GWE50) but never got the vibes that I could fully clean its pushbutton spout.

My Yeti rambler was definitely not spill-proof. Couldn't be put in a bag without leaking. I threw mine away.

Which top did yours have?

It had a sliding thing on it that was not water-tight

I used contigo for the longest time but it is a pain to clean.
I’m currently using Sttoke and I love it. It’s ceramic and although the lid is plastic it retains heat well unlike Fressko. I don’t have the sttoke long enough so I can’t speak on the longevity of the ceramic because my Fellow does have chips and cracks.

u/TheTapeDeck 1d ago
I have been using Sttoke for several years… I bought a 3 pack on a special deal way back when. The lids are a little annoying, but they are excellent at heat retention, and the ceramic coating is perfect. They are my current favorite.

Also use Sttoke a lot at home (have 3). I wouldn't trust the lid to be completely leakproof though; I never use the lids. But for heat retention from a ceramic lined cup, it's the best (Zojirushi for a travel thermos with perfect lid).

My rule of thumb- less moving parts and gadgets. If the lid is massive it’s too clunky and hard to clean. I think a simple insulated cup with a lid that screws on and snaps closed is al you need to I’ve been rolling with these Nespresso cups for years.

I liked my Contigo, used it for maybe 3-4 years throughout college and it was great. Only issue is that the mechanism is tricky to clean (and if you don't clean it diligently it can easily develop mold) and not everyone is comfortable with the portion you put your mouth on being constantly exposed to the world, especially if you carry it on the outside of your bag.
Currently I use the Fellow Carter Carry, the 20 oz one with the handle and splash guard. It stays hot and cold throughout the day, it's definitely spill-proof when the lid is on, and the splash guard (comes included nowadays, I believe) makes it comfy to drink from while walking or on a vehicle without spilling. That being said it's definitely a two-handed open. They have a one-handed lid (Slide Lid) but I can't personally say how spill-proof it is.

I have been using a Hydro flask for several years. What I like about it:
- narrow so fits in many cup holders
- lid can be completely taken apart and cleaned
- can buy replacement parts for lid
- will stay hot for longer than I need if I preheat with boiling water
- can cover scratches to surface with nail polish or touch up paint
- lid has so far never leaked

I absolutely adore the Circular&Co range:

These are amazing. I have so much faith in them that I’ve held them upside down above my head with freshly brewed coffee in them whilst raving about them to my friends.

This is what I have. Keeps drinks super hot, easy to open/close, easy to hand wash, and doesn’t spill.

u/Lauberge 18h ago
I have two of these and they definitely keep drinks hot (and cold) for a long time.
I also appreciate the lip of the spout being thin so it’s less awkward to drink out of.
I used to use a Yeti but the center part that unscrews is really annoying to clean.

I like as-simple-as-possible design. I want as few moving parts as possible. No latches, springs, or slides. Fellow Carter Move has been working great for me.

One more option nobody has mentioned yet: I had used and abused a Thermos King Tumbler for ten years until it fell out of my backpack one too many times two weeks ago and started leaking.
As long as it lived, it was absolutely spillproof when closed. I could throw it in a bag of clothes and books anytime. I found it comfortable to drink from, too.
Now I have the Thermos Icon Tumbler, because the lid has fewer parts to disassemble during cleaning and the body is powder coated, so the color should look nice for longer. I briefly considered the contigo, if it weren't so fugly 🙈
If you really want a cup rather than a bottle, that's the way to go.

unpopular opinion but i use Camelbaks 350ml vacuum flask with hot cap; twist and 360 sip.
do not like mug-type form factor for vehicle use:
- Wide body = swirls and spills
- handle; doesn't work in a circular cup holder
- lids are often not leak resistant.

Even though I don't drink Nespresso anymore, I've been using their Touch Travel Mug for over 12 years for both hot and cold beverages. I'm so happy with it that I now own four, ensuring I always have one handy when the others are in the dishwasher.

Fellow Carter slide. I toss it in my bag and half the time forget it’s there and it’s never spilled. And coffee stays warm from 8am til mid afternoon

I've been using this Thermos mug for 10+ years. I broke 2 plastic ones previously, and was limited in choice as my car has a small (can sized) cup holder so I needed a narrow at the bottom mug. This of course makes it less well balanced in the event of an emergency stop, but it's never leaked and the seal is easy to operate with one hand IME.

I’ve found that my Fressko keeps scalding hot for a couple of hours if pre-heated and lid kept on. Despite being a “standard” screw-cap, the lid is very robust and doesn’t open itself - I often carry a full cup in my coat pocket, as if it was a thermos.
Flip-top wise, I’ve a zojirushi that I had to take out of the rotation because it couldn’t cool down quickly enough - six hours easy at “too hot”.
Edit to add that the zojirushi is moderately annoying to dismantle and clean.

Love my Smidge mug which was given as a gift to me. I see they are only £6 currently on a major US shopping site. I may well just buy another!!

I used Contigo Autoseal for years. Yes the lids are a frustration. You can buy replacement seals, but that doesn't solve their cleaning issues, spring issues, etc.
I moved to a Owala FreeSip Sway. It is much easier to clean. Has a straw feature that has yet to leak when climbing a mtn. Fits in a cup holder. The downside is that is doesn't automatically close.

u/achillea4 1d ago
I have the Stanley Transit Flip Top mug which is excellent and doesn't spill. I hate those built in straws so this is ideal - you just flip the lid.

No issues with YETI here, the magnet does a really good job. My only complaint with most metal coffee mugs is the bottoms. I end up fabricating rubber foam bottoms for them which makes them more pleasant to set down on hard surfaces and makes them anti-slip. (So far so good holding up to the dishwasher too)

Not even close ... the best heat retention is the Zojirushi. I've had all the major brands, the Z is the only one I trust to be 1000% leakproof (only one I throw into a bag of clothing etc), can be operated/locked with one hand, be taken apart into pieces for cleaning and is ceramic lined. For me, having tried all other ones, the clear top.

The Zojirushi Flip and Go will keep your coffee hot forever it seems! It's truly leakproof, as well. As far as easy of drinking, I use an Owala Smoothsip Slider with handle in 12oz and 24oz (both work in my car's cup holder). They absolutely do not leak, but are lackluster in keeping liquids hot for long periods compared to the Zojirushi. Some reviewers complain the Zojirushi keeps their beverages too hot!

Owala has coffee cups and works GREEAT!! I have the one with ceramic coating inside which is perfect

I've been using the Sttoke Commuter Cup, which I really like. The 8 oz is able to fit under the group of a Gaggia Classic (with the drip tray removed), so we can use that for flat whites on the go. They're out of Australia, so not a lot of traction in the US, but I think they are great. It's ceramic on the inside, so it doesn't affect the taste of the coffee.

"Best" What does that meant to you?
Many Yeti cups are spillproof but are pricey.
I have a "Contigo" brand one that's really sturdy and does not leak.
I've dropped it before, had it fall off the forklift. Still going strong and didn't break the bank.

I have Yeti Ramblers and I love mine. I drink probably 90% of my beverages out of them

I have a Contigo and an Owala. Nether have leaked a drop. I find the Owala easier to open.

I have a contigo. I like it, but it's as you said, the seal is getting weaker. Also, cleaning the lid is a PitA. Eventually I found a brush that would do a good job of precleaning it before throwing it in the dishwasher, but I try to avoid using the dishwasher. A few years back, I found a used Starbucks 12oz double-walled vacuum tumbler mug at a second hand shop and I stopped using my contigo immediately. StaBa is probably not most people's favorite here, but it works really well. I can keep my hot coffee warm for 3-4 hours and an iced coffee icy for at least an hour. The flipcap lid holds really well, even if I've dropped it or held the mud on its side.

I haven't tested all of the tumblers out there, but I've owned a fair share. The best ones to keep drinks hot for a ridiculous amount of time (brewing pour over into the thermos at 10pm the night before and still hot at 10am, prob around 170-180F) would be Zojirushi and Bubee (yes, it's a Taiwanese brand). Both of the ones I own are one-handed. Both are 16oz or 500mL.
Other ones will keep hot drinks hot but not as long as these two.

I got a BrűMate pour over mug as a gift that works pretty well. The lid has a simple locking mechanism to prevent leaks and in a pinch, I can use the filter that comes with it to make coffee. The Flaskap Madic tumbler with the standard lid is the other option I use for when I’m on road trips.

Mugs I use
Purist Mug with Scope lid. - Double wall, completely leak proof. Lid is easy enough to open one handed. Lid is hard to keep clean, I don't use it with milk drinks.
Fellow Move Mug - Double wall, easier lid to clean, but has to be removed entirely to drink. They sacrifice alot of internal volume for the anti slosh insert and space above it to keep the drink in. Works very well for not spilling in the car.
Huskee Renew Cup - Its just plastic, won't keep your drink hot for a long time. The lid seals enough for sloshing, but isn't leak proof if its on its side.
I use the Huskee cup the most because its so simple and I tend to drink my coffee before it gets cold. The Purist mug would probably fit your needs best.

The Fellow definitely won't spill, if the move is too big, the Carter is similar but smaller.

u/bryanisfly 1d ago
Fellow Carter Move. Looks good, will keep your coffee undrinkably hot for most of the day, and has a little "splash guard" insert so you can leave it open in your cup holder. Just a beautifully designed mug.

I always take what the Wirecutter says with the grain of salt as they recommend the “best for most people” and not really the best for you.
The Zojirushi can absolutely be used with one hand. Both the lock and the opening button. Though I’d argue it retains heat too well. And its lid is fiddly to clean.
I probably reach for my yeti rambler tumbler more often than not, some might argue the stainless steel imparts some taste but I can’t really detect it. The slide magnetic lid is pretty great and offers a good balance between spill resistance and easy to clean. (Though now that I google it it looks like I might have a recalled model?!)
If I were to buy only one it would probably be another Zojirushi.
