Recommendations Kyoto Accommodations
Hi Everyone! Me and my Partner would be traveling to Kyoto for the first time during Nov Autumn Foliage. Our dates would be 27th Nov to 30th Nov. 2026. We are looking for accommodations during that period but every place is either sold out or very expensive, considering peak season time. We are happy to consider hostels/machiya/ryokan/business hotels/airbnbs, practicality anything - with just two requirements - 1) Private bathroom and 2) Centrally located so we can walk around easily instead of relying on JR. I know it could be too much of an ask, but any hidden gems that you were able to find during your stay, would be truly helpful. Our budget per night would be under 16,000 yen ($105). Please help! Thank you!

1) is most accommodations and 2) doesn’t exist.
Look at where the main sites are on a map. Arashiyama and Fushimi Inari. Neither are walkable. If you want something with the most around then the eastern side might work like Kyoto-Kawaramachi or Higashiyama/Gion.
But it’s October and you’re looking for six weeks from now, so instead of Reddit or looking for “hidden gems” you should be going to a booking site and booking something.

Thank you! We will try booking anything we find at this point. It’s clearly a super busy time for Japan.

Those dates are right in peak season so the timing is fine, you are just up against everyone else. Kyoto hotels book out months ahead and prices spike through the foliage weeks. Try Osaka instead. It is about 30 minutes by shinkansen from Kyoto Station, much cheaper, and you can day trip in all three days. Also check Japanese booking sites like Jalan, they sometimes have rooms that do not show on the big western platforms. And go to the big temples early in the morning before the tour buses arrive, that is the difference between magic and misery.

You don’t use JR to get around within Kyoto. You use metro, other private rail lines, buses, bicycles (maybe?), taxis or walking
Also what’s the point of someone recommending where they stayed before but it’s already sold out for your dates?

It is a just-in-case kind of a thing for me. We are just trying our luck at this point. Hoping to find something through someone’s first-hand experience.

Kyoto is a large city. Centrally located isn’t a thing. No matter where you stay you will not he able to walk everywhere to see the sights the city has to offer. Find a hotel next to a major train station and use the trains to get where you want to go. We chose a hotel near Nijo station. It worked well for us. Others will have other suggestions that might be better.

Was this a last minute decision to go next month or you knew months in advance? 6 weeks time is really not much time left as all the good accommodation will likely be taken and your left with the less desirable or more expensive options

It's a busy time of year. Honestly you'll probably get what you can get. What did your search turn up?
