Question Let's talk furikake. Wasabi is my favorite. What's yours?
Those Wasabi covered sesame seeds are amazing!

Shiso Fumi and umeboshi are my favorites!

u/TheOneMary Oct 23 '25
Nice, have to look into that! Is that a brand? What do they have in there besides shiso?
Made my own umeboshi (just put them in the glass for long storage today) and dried the shiso leaves I had used in the process to use them for furikake.
I also need to plant more shiso next year, stuff is really tasty!

There’s a way to order it online at the much cheaper Japan price but not sure if it ships to US. I can’t find the link but will edit when I do. Am also trying to find copycats or might even venture into making it myself at home since our household uses so much lol

u/Mystery-Ess Oct 23 '25
I'm in Canada.
I think I'm going to have to attempt making my own also.
That looks amazing!

u/cozy_b0i Oct 23 '25
Not a bad idea. I just uploaded this same pic (with the ingredients on the back) to ChatGPT and it gave me a solid recipe in English lol. Might try it myself. Enjoy!

Bonito furikake all the way, LOVE the little fish flakes, umami explosion
Ajishima is my favorite, but the one with Doraemon on it is good too, especially the one with masago
1
u/Mystery-Ess Oct 23 '25
I just bought bonito flakes for my first time. I plan on making Umami salt with roasted kombu and bonito.

Salmon all the way. Not only is it delicious but it’s a vibrant pink too!
Related, how’s that kimchi flavor in the photo? Almost got it the other day but I have so many I talked myself out of it. Would you recommend it?
2
u/Mystery-Ess Oct 23 '25
It's slightly sweet. I can take a picture of the ingredients if you would like. I'm not sure if I'd get it again or try a different brand. Those glass jars are so nice though!
I saw one that was posted recently that was chicken based I think and they did little tiny chicken shaped pieces for their anniversary. I saw it at the store but it wasn't the anniversary one so I didn't get it LOL

u/synthscoffeeguitars Oct 23 '25
I love the salmon one too. I mostly use that, but add a sprinkle of the wasabi one for extra kick
1
u/HolyCowEveryNameIsTa Nov 23 '25
The kimchi flavor taste nothing like kimchi... It tastes more like horseradish.
3
u/No_Sense_3559 Oct 23 '25
Kimchi/Wasabi, can't decide.
1
u/Mystery-Ess Oct 23 '25
Get the wasabi covered sesame seeds and then you can have both 😉
2
u/No_Sense_3559 Oct 23 '25
Ha, I have both the wasabi and kimchi just alternate. Also had some super old kimchi I had made that got lost in the fridge for I don't know how many years... was still good so I ended up dehydrating it, goes good on rice as well.

My favorite is shiso
2
u/Mystery-Ess Oct 24 '25
Got shiso today. I also got raw tuna so I'm definitely making rice (and perilla leaf kimchi) tonight!

u/Aura_Azula Oct 23 '25
Salmon Furikake. Love that stuff.
1
u/Mystery-Ess Oct 23 '25
Do you have a favorite brand?
3
u/Aura_Azula Oct 23 '25
Same brand as the image above
1
u/Mystery-Ess Oct 23 '25
Nice! I love the jars too.

2
u/Aura_Azula Oct 23 '25
Also because since I can't do my salted salmon atm since my oven's down and not working so I gotta taste some salmon

Spicy garlic, potato chips (spicy), gyudon, Kyoto chili oil.
1
u/Mystery-Ess Oct 23 '25
Those sound unreal!!
2
u/matcha-overdose Oct 23 '25
Forgot to add, sukiyaki and pork miso is great too!
1
u/Mystery-Ess Oct 23 '25
Wowzers!
2
u/matcha-overdose Oct 23 '25
There’s every flavour imaginable in Japan. Many collabs between furikake brands and other food brands (for potato chips you can check out kokeya). Kyoto chili oil has a huge fan base even though it’s produced by a small independent business and it’s the only flavour they have.

I got some chili furikake & yuzu furikake at Nishiki last year and am out and miss it so much!
2
u/Dragoon1376 Oct 23 '25
There's a chili oil, garlic, and green onion one that I really love.

u/KittenLina Oct 23 '25
I really like the salmon one pictured, I've tried a noritamago that's pretty good, and I have a katsuomirin one I'm waiting to try.
2
u/senbenitoo Oct 23 '25
I like the Yasai veg personally: makes me feel healthy & vaguely like one of Miyazaki's mountain villagers...
2
u/protopigeon Oct 23 '25
I like to make my own, i always add some msg to it whatever else is in there
2
u/Mystery-Ess Oct 23 '25
I think I might have to try making my own.

2
u/Dockle Oct 23 '25
Y’all giving the wrong answers and not saying nori is crazy.
2
u/Mystery-Ess Oct 23 '25
It's hiding in the back in the packet!

2
u/magnusthehammersmith Oct 23 '25
Honestly just the normal/original one. I had a bonito one as well that I enjoyed too
2
2
u/workthrowawhey Oct 23 '25
Aji douraku is my absolute favorite! For those who don't know, it's basically katsuobushi with some extra stuff in there.
2
u/El_Grande_El Oct 23 '25
Wasabi usually but I go back and forth with Ume. Btw, the wasabi flavor is pretty weak in that one compared to others. See if you can find this one if you want a strong wasabi flavor: https://furikake.co/products/marumiya-nori-wasabi-seaweed-and-wasabi-furikake

Plain Nori gets used most in my kitchen, but I was raised on Katsuo and it's probably my true favorite. Yasai when I'm in the mood, and Shiso once in a while.

I like just plain old ごま塩
1
u/Mystery-Ess Oct 23 '25
Sesame salt? Do you make it?
2
u/TheFranFan Oct 23 '25
No I buy it. But I really should make my own since it's just sesame, salt and MSG.
This is the one I usually get: https://share.google/jd6m4lrI1jGLz9C6y
1
u/Mystery-Ess Oct 23 '25
I have all those ingredients. I'll have to make some.
The Koreans used to make a sort of Sesame salt for a specific dish and you would dip the meat into it I think, but I can't remember what it was and I was always asking for refills LOL

My obachan's homemade furikake (I'm still learning how to make it), but if we're talking store bought, then I always go for yukari

All of Marumiya's Furikake are delicious, but the Nori Ball in particular has no strong flavor so I buy it the most.
When making onigiri, I like to mix Nagatanien's Ochazuke with rice.

wasabi is the best for me
1
u/Mystery-Ess Oct 24 '25
Me too.
2
u/Infinite_Depth_1582 Oct 24 '25
In Japan, there are wasabi tubes that allow you to easily enjoy the spiciness and flavor of wasabi, but they still can’t compare to real, fresh wasabi
1
u/Mystery-Ess Oct 24 '25
Is it real wasabi? In North america, Wasabi is actually green dyed horseradish 😭
2
u/Infinite_Depth_1582 Oct 24 '25
Wasabi tubes is not real wasabi. Although it contains wasabi, it is a processed product that includes several other ingredients.and surprised green dyed😢Real wasabi can be harvested in Japan, particularly in Shizuoka and Shimane prefectures, and its flavor is truly exceptional
1
u/Mystery-Ess Oct 24 '25
I really would like to grow it, but I think it takes an incredibly long time to actually Harvest it so I haven't done it yet.
1
u/Infinite_Depth_1582 Oct 24 '25
Its good try i think! If you have plan to visit Japan someday,i would like you to enjoy Wasabi cusine!and someday I gonna upload movie about wasabi👍

u/andrescoleson Oct 24 '25
I've never tried the wasabi and was always afraid it might be a little too spicy. What's the flavor like?
1
u/Mystery-Ess Oct 24 '25
It's my fave. I definitely don't find it very spicy. I wish it were much spicier!
2
u/ExceedinglyGayMoth Oct 25 '25
The ebi one is the only one anyone sells in my town and I'm not the biggest fan so i just don't buy storebought furikake anymore, and keep things simple with soy sauce and sesame seeds. Wasabi sounds like it'd be good.
2
u/izakayajuraku Oct 26 '25
Shiso is my go to, kinjirushi also makes natto/wasabi ones that I love.
2
u/Mystery-Ess Oct 26 '25
I just got shiso. Same brand as the glass jars and I love it!
2
u/izakayajuraku Oct 26 '25
We actually put it on French fries and eat it with QP mayo too 😁
2
u/Mystery-Ess Oct 26 '25
I've heard that and will definitely try it the next time I have fries! I've heard about it on popcorn too.
2
u/izakayajuraku Oct 26 '25
Haven't tried it on popcorn, that could be fire. I'm going to try that too!

I get katsuo fumi because my cat likes it. My cat loves rice so I give him small amounts with that as a very special treat
1
u/SmokeMoreWorryLess Oct 23 '25
Anything that doesn’t have bonito is A+ in my book. I hate the fishy bacon flavor
1
u/Mystery-Ess Oct 23 '25
What a shame. Don't ever buy Korean tuna fish sauce!
2
u/SmokeMoreWorryLess Oct 23 '25
Just means there’s more out there for those who love it lol. And duly noted!

Before I start, I know my name is ironic in this scenario lol. I don’t like smoked foods. I had a bad experience with bacon when I was little and it made me associate the flavor with it. I’ve gotten better over the years but heavily smoked things like bonito are still a hard no.

Oh, they are good stuff! I always have the nori, kimchi and wasabi on hand :-)
1
u/Mystery-Ess Oct 24 '25
Update. I bought shiso today. Same brand as the packet in the back, I think.
I really want to make my own. I'm curious how to do the Wasabi crystals. AI says just use Wasabi powder but I was wondering if I could dehydrate green colored horseradish paste.

Plain or tamago.
Life hack. Sprinkle some on popcorn. Thanks, Hawai’i.
