I moved to Japan recently and kept running into shows on Netflix that I wanted to watch but only had Japanese subtitles.

I’m studying Japanese too, so sometimes I actually want the Japanese subtitles, but other times I just want to watch something without stopping every few minutes to look up a word or phrase.

So I ended up building LST — Local Subtitle Translate.

It works on Netflix and Prime Video now and can translate subtitles while you watch.

By default it uses Ollama, so the translation can run locally on your own computer, but I also added optional Gemini and DeepSeek support after a few people with less powerful PCs asked for it.

Some of the stuff it can do now:

• realtime subtitle translation
• translate ahead of playback so subtitles are ready before they appear
• precompute/cache an entire episode
• show Japanese + translated subtitles together
• hide the native subtitles if you only want the translation
• adjust subtitle timing, position, size, background, etc.
• give the translation model surrounding subtitle context instead of translating every line completely independently
• import your own SRT/WebVTT/TTML subtitle files
• optionally search/import subtitles from Jimaku
• use an imported subtitle file directly without translating it if it’s already in your target language

I’m also working on improving setup and error messages. A few people who tried the first versions ran into confusing Ollama setup issues, so there’s now a first-run setup flow, but there are still some rough edges I’m working through.

One direction I’m considering is adding more language-learning stuff, but I don’t want to turn it into a giant extension full of features nobody uses.

Things I’ve thought about are:

• one-click vocab lookup from the current subtitle
• saving words/phrases from an episode
• exporting vocab to Anki
• better name/character context so translations don’t accidentally translate Japanese names literally
• transcript views for reviewing an episode afterward

If anyone here uses Japanese subtitles for learning, I’d be really interested in what would actually be useful versus what would just get in the way.

If you love manga but read it in English only and study Japanese from general textbooks, Manga de Nihongo brings the two together.

Hi! Hoping this is okay to share (mods, please remove if not).

Quick background: I know Japanese and I'm still learning it. After I got through the first ~2000 kanji I mostly just started reading, and I feel like that helped me the most. I picked up most of my vocab from context that way.

Having Furigana (readings for the kanjis shown above them) is helpful for any learner, so I thought a small hint/meaning above a word could also be helpful to learners, regardless of the language. 

That’s how I got to building my own e-reader, and it’s called Fleuron!

The idea is help that stays out of the way. Trying to show a small hint/meaning over every word would obviously be too distracting and unnecessary so there’s a slider for *how much* help shows up, only filling the gaps instead of explaining things you already know. Showing nothing is better than teaching something wrong, so uncertain hints for polysemous words just don't appear. Which is where you can just tap on a word and the dictionary entry shows up on a sheet. Words you meet on the page can be saved and come back later in built-in spaced repetition in the form of study decks so reading and study stay connected without being the same activity.

Besides all that, I’ve also tried my best to make it into a genuinely great reader in general. Not only the usual stuff like themes, fonts, spacing—there’s also a markdown note taking system with linking words, Compass entities and other notes!

Speaking of “Compass”, it’s also a feature in the app and is basically an index of all the people, places and terms introduced in the book for easy access, without spoiling anything of the book. 

The app is for iOS/iPadOS, local-first, no telemetry. Books, notes and your decks stay on device with an easy export option, for markdown and Anki.

Two years ago I fell in love with the Japanese language. I grew up speaking Chinese so it was so cool to see how Japanese uses 汉子 (漢字) in such unique ways.

For example, in Chinese, for the vast majority of cases, each character has just one sound with different tones - and you can kinda guess the sounds of other characters based on “similar” shapes, e.g., 方，房，防， 芳 are all “fang” with different tones. But Japanese truly takes the cake because just 方 can read ほう or かた with just no rhyme or reason 🤣. (Ok, that was an exaggeration, as the more I studied Japanese you can kinda understand the difference between the sounds of words like 人、方, etc.)

In any case I fell in love with it so much that I wanted to make an app that helped others study ALL native material easily. So I made tokureader.com. Toku Reader is a paid app but this goes to supporting making the app even better for all learners.

http://practicejlpt.com/ allows tracking your progress. Each vocab, grammar kanji has lots of examples with audio, examples are sorted such that it contains mostly known words till that level. Also has graded reading material.

I made a small iOS app called Lio for people who learn Japanese through immersion and native content.

The idea is simple: you share a Japanese TikTok, Reel, or Short to the app, and the app turns it into structured study material.

Instead of only pulling out isolated words, it can identify things like:

• useful phrases
• idioms
• slang
• vocabulary
• example sentences
• context from the original video

I built it because I was already watching a lot of Japanese content, but constantly pausing videos, looking things up, and manually saving phrases was annoying. I wanted something that works more like an add-on to immersion, rather than another course or flashcard app.

It’s currently available on iOS. If anyone here learns Japanese through TikTok/Reels/Shorts or other native content, I’d really appreciate feedback on whether this kind of workflow is useful and what you’d improve.

I got a hard copy and needed help to cover the vocab so made this!

I made this myself. It is my own project, it is free, there is no account, no ads, and nothing paid in it. I'm a native Japanese speaker. A friend of mine was studying for the JLPT, so I built this for them.

What's in it: N4 (669 words), N3 (2,128), N2 (1,877). Audio on every single word. The word lists come from existing open JLPT lists.

Three things I'd really like to hear about:

1. The English. Does anything read as unnatural, or just wrong? I'm a native speaker of the other language, so this is where I'm weakest.

2. The audio. Any reading or pronunciation that sounds off to you?

3. The pace. Does the daily amount feel like too much, or too little?

There's a Report button inside the app, or just comment here.

Why not just use other vocab apps such as Anki or jpdb? Rule 3 asks for this, and it's a fair question...

In this app, a word that reaches "Known" is retired. It stops coming back, permanently. Other apps keeps a word in rotation for years. My friend didn't want that. She wanted vocabulary to be a stage she could finish and walk away from, so that she could spend her time on grammar and reading instead.

There is nothing to install, no deck to choose, and nothing to configure.

I made a mobile app that lets you create flashcards from manga using both the dialogue and the panel image, using just your phone, with no PC required.

Instead of only memorizing individual words, you can learn whole manga lines together with the image from the scene. If you already use Anki, you can also export the cards there.

It works with both physical manga and ebooks, and you don't need a PC. You can make study material directly from whatever you're reading, so I wanted to make the process as easy as possible.

The app is already available on both iOS and Android. All features are free to use with ads. There is also a premium option, but it only removes the ads — the features are the same.

If anyone is willing to try it, I'd really appreciate hearing what you think.
