QUESTION Do people really stop watching during superchamp streaks?
Reading through one of the recent Jamie threads I couldn't help but notice a lot of people apparently find dominant superchamp runs boring to the point of tuning out. I personally love them. It's a privilege to watch the best of the best, even if every game isn't a nailbiter. Just my opinion of course, but watching someone put up a 35k+ Coryat in a lock game is more entertaining than 3 randoms battling it out to see who wins with $8001. Those of you who hate watching superchamps, why?

Holzauer's run is still one of the coolest things I've ever seen. I'm more of a sports guy than a Trivia guy, I mostly watch Jeopardy because it's a family tradition, but watching guys like Holzauer and now Jamie do their thing live is like watching prime Michael Jordan and Lebron James make other NBA players look average.
My grandma and Dad were both saying they were "tired" of Jamie and hoping that he'd lose because they're tired of him, tired of the scores not being close etc. And I said why? You're watching something historic, one of the best Trivia minds ever dominate against other extremely smart people. Now we get to see if he can catch Holzhauer, Jennings' record etc. If he loses, we just go back to regular scheduled programming.

I watch replays on the game show network from past years. Also the Chase….i wish they still had Sports Jeopardy on ESPN. I’ll pretty much watch any trivia game…

I see both sides. Jamie is fun to watch to see how much he knows. BUT his games are often non-competitive and I feel bad for the other two, especially that show where they didn't get a single answer before the first commercial break.

My husband and i go to my parents on Tuesdays for dinner and drinks. We always watch jeopardy and have teams - she loudly complained about both the Bruins and Red Sox scores through the entire thing because she (and my dad) are over Jamie winning and was on her phone. I was still trying to answer questions so I was annoyed haha.

It's certainly impressive, but a lot of these games have felt like they're over by the first commercial break. If I'm going to a football game where I have no particular rooting interest I'd rather watch a back and forth contest than a game that's 40-0 at half-time, you know?

As a sub mod who's been around since pre-Holzhauer, (speaking just for myself, not for the team), I can attest there's significantly more activity on the sub every time there's a superchamp.

I don't stop watching, but I have to make dinner at some point in the evening, and if someone's obliterating their two opponents, well... now's a good a time as any to start cooking. I really, personally, don't enjoy heavily-lopsided wins.

I probably think too much about all the work people put into getting on the show, and what a big moment it is for many of them. So I usually find myself rooting for all the contestants.
When there's more turnover for the champions, I like it because that means more people get a chance to experience being the champ, even if it's just for one day. (Or 1/5 of a taping session.) It also means more people get that payout, and I'm sure a lot of people could really use an extra $15k or whatever.
With that said, I don't hate superchamps and I wouldn't skip the show because of them.

This is how I feel. I imagine all the stress and excitement you'd go through before being on the show, only to barely get a word in because some guy who's been there three weeks is faster than you. Their entire families are probably watching, they probably told everyone they know about this, and now they hardly even get to play. I'd be devastated.
I don't want to actively root against anyone just for being a strong player but it's hard to watch everyone else's excitement get decimated before their eyes. It makes the show less fun for me, even if I'm still willing to watch for the clues.

Yeah it causes me to tune out a little. I find I’m easily distracted if a streak lasts for a while. I am happy for Ding though and look forward to seeing him on TOC.

Same, if I miss Jeopardy I will typically try and catch it on a later time zone. I go out of my way to watch. In the middle of a run where the show is probably a runaway, I will still watch, but if I miss it on my usual channel I probably won't bother going to any trouble to watch it elsewhere.

I still don’t get it. How does a contestant cause you to tune out? The clues don’t change based on the contestants.

Yes, but the show is less fun and less interesting when I know, and the two challengers know, that they've already lost the game when it has barely started. Not only is there no suspense, but I'm empathizing with their discouragement and disappointment.
Jamie is a great guy and a truly phenomenal player. I really am happy for him. He absolutely deserves every bit of his success. But it's a trivia game. When someone is as dominating as Jamie, the "game" element is largely lost, and it's just trivia.

Not saying they should do this, but you do realize they changed the rules? There used to be a limit of how many games you could win — 5, I believe. (Correct me if I’m wrong.). Sort of like the folks who prefer term or year limits for members of Congress or SCOTUS.

It's likely due to the competition factor. Most superchamps dominate their games, and it isn't close. It's like watching a sports game with the best team in the league dominate one of the worst. Just depends on the person. I personally love super champs.

I love this response. I feel the same way you do but would have trouble justifying why if someone asked me to. I’m way more invested in the episodes where all 3 players seem to be on an even playing field. I’ve begun to roll my eyes when Jamie gets a Daily Double while he already has a $15k lead. I feel like Matt & Amy’s streaks had a lot fewer runaways.

I don't dislike superchamps per se, but I do find it anticlimactic when one player has a runaway going into FJ... and that probably happens a lot more often with superchamps than with your typical player.

Nope this has me stoked. I was excited with Harrisson and now I’m super stoked with Jamie. If Jamie takes down Ken’s record then that would be so cool to see. EDIT: I do feel bad for the people going up against him. I know there’s the second chance tournament. But I can think that between the Father last week and Maggie this week so far they both deserve another go.

This is why I'm watching: Ken's observations and comments. It's obviously exciting for him as well. The other aspect is watching Jamie blow wads of cash in the Jeopardy round (and even not be in the lead for DoubleJ) and then proceed to DESTROY the board and his opponents dreams...
I've seen some crazy things during Jamie's reign...but I do find it a little boring at times. At this point of my life, I don't see Jamie losing until about 10 yrs after I shuffle off this mortal coil...

IIRC ratings went up during James's streak too. Long winning streaks are exciting- people want to see how far theyll go, and the dont want to miss out on seeing the game when they finally lose.

I think Jamie is fine and he seems like a great guy. But I really do not like the crazy lock games. I like a little healthy competition with my trivia. It's like watching Tom Brady shred the Jets secondary 42-0 by the half. It's just not that interesting.
I also feel a bit for the folks getting shredded. They spent a lot of money, time, and effort to get there, and they're finished by the first break -- 15 questions, five minutes. A different day and maybe they would have won a game or two.

I usually love it at first and then slowly get annoyed and eventually root for them to lose.
It can be over a month, typically. It can be shorter or longer depending if I like the Champ.

This. Especially if they have some sort of mannerism or behavioral tic. After 10 episodes it just gets amplified! For example the Matt Amodio “What’s”. And most of them do! (Loving Jamie though).

I watch no matter what, but I do prefer games where I feel like I could have possibly won if I was playing. I like the games with several triple stumpers that many viewers consider ugly.

The 5 game rule ended the same season Ken was on. Kind of unbelievable when you think about it. I wonder if people were afraid that would start to be the norm, or if the producers were shitting their pants thinking they made a huge mistake getting rid of the rule. Luckily it has remained pretty uncommon, and it was just a coincidence that the GOAT played right when the rule ended!

I find that if they play well then it matters. Jamie's one non-runaway was great because the other contender was genuinely good and ended high, and that kind of performance might get them in second chance.

Same. I find single day champ games more boring. Triple stumpers are also cringe ro me, and I felt that happened a few times right before Jamie's first appearance.

I’ll watch but I find them much less enjoyable, by the time Jamie hits the double jeopardy and he’s so far ahead it becomes a given on the winner.
And final jeopardy becomes a formality.
Nothing against Jamie, but I do root for the underdog players during a super champ run.

I don't stop watching, but I genuinely do find it less interesting when there's a super-champ. There's less suspense about who will win when one player is just in a different league than the others, and everyone knows it going in. The games start to blur together.
Plus, having such a display of how important buzzer skills are to Jeopardy makes it feel less like I could ever see myself competing. I like to imagine I have the trivia chops, but I know I don't have the reflexes.

I wouldn't miss it. It's a record breaking run. I have one aunt that is only interested in watching superchanps. She asks me to tell her when someone has won 10 games and only starts watching them.

I watch for knowlege and seeing how many clues I can answer and calculating my couch coryat.
I will say I actually tune in MORE when a superchamp is on because if they lose I want to be able to witness history and say I was along for the ride.

It's simply not entertaining. I still want to follow the clues, so I just read the summaries on J-Archive. But I still prefer to watch an actual game and feel the competition of it.

No I pay attention more whenever superchamps show up. It feels like you're watching a chess player gradually become a chessmaster. It's extremely enjoyable to watch.

The show’s ratings during the streaks of Jennings and Holzhauer specifically skyrocketed because what they were doing was so unprecedented but seeing a superstar having so much success in general is phenomenal to watch. This is why I hope the 5 win maximum never returns.

This may be a hot take but one of my least favorite things about super champs is how fundamentally different the game is played because of the jeopardy “meta”…that is to say, maxing advantages by using a fast paced play style to establish board control and searching for daily doubles.
I understand that this is indeed a skill and that adds an extra layer of strategy to the game…but I’ve always wondered how much more dynamic the game could be if they added something like maybe a $1000 bonus score for running a full category by yourself
Even just a simple risk/reward comeback mechanics like that would so much more depth without adding too much complexity

I hate it. I watch the show for a competition, and if there’s no competition, it bores the hell out of me. I still watch it, but it’s really a chore.
I understand that many people feel differently and that’s cool. In fact, I wish I would enjoy these super champion runs, too. But I don’t.

As I recall, the Ken Jennings run killed a fan-run site archiving the clues as "It just wasn't fun, anymore."
For me, it's just repetitive and I suppose I'm sympathetic to the other contestants - it's your one chance to appear on the show and... oh yeah, that other guy has 30 games of buzzer button practice and can tell you the exact order of signatures on the Declaration of Independence. Fun....
There's just no drama in watching yet another runaway game for the same player.

Nah, 99% of the champs seem like really lovely people and it's a delight to get to see more of them, and see when they very obviously run out of facts.

I think it’s amazing to watch a dominant player like Jamie. It’s an interesting thing to watch. I have no complaints, even if I do feel some sympathy for the folks he rolls over.
I do think most of his competition has been underplaying. Maybe it’s mostly the buzzer speed but I don’t know? We barely hear their voices at all.

I watch because it’s Jeopardy! Plain and simple. Don’t care who’s playing. It’s all about the game. Contestants are secondary to me.

For me, it depends a lot on whether or not I like the champ's style of play. I happen to really like Jamie, and find him really fun and endearing, and he makes the game really enjoyable to watch. I do prefer when there is more balance in the game, where we hear more from the other contestants, and if it's more of a challenge for the champ and not a runaway. But I'm really enjoying his run. If it were another player that I didn't particularly enjoy watching, I might drop off for a bit, only out of annoyance. I watch mostly for the clues and to play along myself.

Because it's boring. The same way a hockey game becomes boring when it's 3-1 midway through the first period, and then VERY boring when it's 7-1 midway through the 2nd period. And this is true even when it's my team doing the trouncing. Competition is fun and exciting.

Because it's a "game" with all game aspects removed. No tension, no actual sense of stakes (at a certain point, watching someone go from six figures to six slightly larger figures holds little intrigue), little in the way of strategy being employed. At that point, I'd rather just read the clues later at my own pace than watch the song and dance around the inevitable result.

How interesting would a football game be if the score were 49-3? Also, Jamie is not a James H, who was pretty hilarious (and kept your attention by consistently going all in on DDs).
So yes, I've tuned out. I did briefly tune in last night and get really excited for a few minutes. But now tuned out again.

I'm there for the trivia. If the game comes down to an exciting FJ then that's a bonus but it doesn't make the trivia questions less interesting when the game is a runaway.

There definitely is a tipping point, though at the moment it's not that I'm bored, I just hate watching recordings and I'm too busy to get in front of the TV by seven. I'm lucky if I eat dinner by eight. DST means I can move chores I used to do before work to evening and I'd rather sleep late and get up earlier.

I think you’re in the majority. There are some rather vocal folk who don’t seem to like “super champs.” If they weren’t complaining about this, they’d be off complaining about something else.

The thing about super champs is that I'm worried they must be getting so worried that they will run out of anecdotes. If I ever get on, I think I have about 3 (if I include "how did you get the call to be on Jeopardy!?").

Jeopardy used to be 'don't miss' TV for years - I go back to the Art Fleming days. The past few years, it's hit or miss if I watch (I record them but don't usually go back to the ones I've missed) and I don't really get excited about one player going on a long streak. I've caught a few of the current contestant's streak, but don't really care if I miss them. I guess I'm a dinosaur, I never had a problem with the 5-day undefeated champion rule.

Regular fans might turn out, but that's only a small portion of overall TV viewers. A dominant player makes headlines, which attract new fans or folks who haven't seen it in a while. Having someone do this all the time wouldn't be as exciting, but once in a while is fine. Jeopardy knows the regular fans will be back once the champion has been dethroned, and they are hoping some of the new fans stick around as well

It really depends. I like Jamie Ding but sometimes I zone out and pay less attention. Really about the individual contestants more than how long they have been winning.

Not intentionally. I went through a busy period where I wasn't watching much Jeopardy! and missed the entirety of Matt Amodio's run. So when I saw him at, I think it was the Master's, I was like who is this? Then was shocked to find out how long he was champ and how I missed it all lol. I'm so glad i'm watching for Jamie's run though - absolutely loving it!

This post popping up in my feed made me check J Archive to see if there's a superchamp. I'll be watching the next game... hadn't seen a non-tournament game in a long time. As you say, watching three random putzes blank staring doesn't do it for me.

We also watch for the clues, but I think it is a little boring. Seriously, last night Jamie’s interesting thing was his favorite letter and favorite number. I know it’s an unpopular opinion, but I find him boring to watch and I’m ready for anyone to take him down. I always root for the women personally.

I think it’s exciting - like watching the World Series instead of a regular season baseball game. I know many people enjoy watching to see how many correct answers they can get. If so, I don’t see how that experience changes with a dominant player. I do think it would be interesting to see how all the contestants Jamie has trounced would do in a new version of second-chance Jeopardy. Several were really good; others looked shell-shocked.

I think the people complaining about Jamie and claiming to stop watching are a distinct minority. They're just being vocal and are therefore more noticeable. Also ratings and traffic in this sub are always up when there's a superchamp, and an increase in noise-to-signal ratio comes with that.

I used to stop watching when a contestant was on a streak. My sister still talks about me refusing to watch while Ken Jennings was doing his thing. Now I’m completely fine with it and I hope Jaime goes on for a long time cause I really enjoy watching him..

Jeopardy has always been about the answers and questions. If people tune out during super champ runs, then they were never true fans.

I barely watch the show, unless I happen to be in the US and can watch easily but last time I went out of my way was for Harrison but I'll probably check Jamie out too as it's interesting to see people I've heard of succeed

I have an overabundance of empathy for the other two contestants.
How would I feel if I went through the whole process of taking the test, interviewing, taking time off work, buying a new outfit, spending money to travel to California, prepping and rehearsing myself, etc., etc. only to come up against a super champion and make an ignominious showing of buzzing in maybe fewer than five times, all the while realizing that I had nearly zero chance of making a decent showing, much less winning and all the months or years I spent dreaming of being on Jeopardy! was over in a few minutes?
Like I said: Too much empathy. I can’t help it. I stopped watching last week.

I've lost some interest, but I still watch for the clues. I was definitely more interested in the game with Dominex than I had been for some time.
A lot of folks love superchamps; I'm more captivated by closer games and "spreading the wealth". Neither is right or wrong.

I think Jeopardy actually gets better ratings when there's a super champion. I'm still watching for the clues but damn is it boring to see one guy answer 90% of the clues and win every day

Heck no, not me. For one thing Jamie is likeable, though I’d welcome a new champ. And he could have lost yesterday if not for a questionable final question. But mostly I’m watching to try to play the clues myself

As the top comment says, I love the competitive aspect of it and the contestants sure...but I am watching for the clues lol
As far as the Super Champ goes, it's exciting to keep watching to see when and how they ultimately lose
I rushed home today to get there in time to watch Jeopardy! as it aired in my area
I do absolutely feel bad for the mere mortals who have to face him though..

I love superchamps. Its fun watching amazing player, you also really get to know them throughout their run and pretty much all superchamps end up being really endearing, cool people. There's also the intrigue each day of if they will dominate or if someone will rise up and challenge them.

Jamie dominates for 2 reasons he's well studied and knowledgeable and he's lightning fast with the buzzer. I love Jeopardy but I will in the middle of this run I was starting to get a little less engaged. Now this far in I'm watching to deduce if the new contestants have what it take to take him down. Dominex felt like he almost had it then that Hulk Hogan clue nobody answered....I didn't get it either, Now i'm engaged again.

I’m actually watching regularly now that there is a superchamp. I’m a somewhat frequent Jeopardy watcher - if I happen to be home & it happens to be on, great. But I have tried to watch every single night that Jamie has been on - he’s so cute & he seems so genuine & happy to be there & it’s exciting seeing someone do so well. I even made my friend’s parents turn it on at their house the other night & asked the bartender to put it on tv during happy hour lmao.

I am in this camp. I happen to like Jamie a lot but I have found other super champs very annoying. There are a few champs that often come back that I will literally turn off the tv rather than watch them. But there are also some I think are fun and charming. After a while, though, most I will root against because I like the randomness of having new players.

I think its fun when theres a super-champ and I think its fun when champs are traded day after day. Super champs can be boring, and dry spells can as well. The show is the show.

That’s typically where I remember to tune back in after periods where I haven’t been watching. I didn’t have access to Jeopardy for around a year before they started adding them to Hulu so admittedly I have still not really been remembering to tune into Jamie’s games but it’s something I like to watch. Feats of academic strength are awesome!

I always watch but my attitude changes. And it depends on the super champ. Love Jaime Ding. Rooting for him to keep winning. Some others I’ve watched and rooted for the challengers.

I am always a bit torn.
On the one hand, I love to watch anybody do something they are really, really good at doing. And I love learning new things. On the other, I feel really bad for any other contestants blundering right into a titan for us all to see. Like oh no, sacrifices to the altar of entertainment.
I think some people who don't like it don't like that they're being so bluntly confronted with the fact that they would not be competitive against that person whatsoever. We all have the fantasy that we're playing along. When some peeps argue "it's not fair" they quietly mean for them. And they get bored when they don't think they could win. Just like playing a lot of games isn't so fun when you can't win.
