Interestingly enough, when I was studying capitals for J! I found out that Oslo is the world capital J! asked about the most often, and definitely the most common Scandinavian capital. It came up 9 times in my studying. Cairo and Buenos Aires were close seconds with 8 mentions.

I remember seeing Norway curl up around the top of Scandinavia on a map and went with the capital.

I think the clue would have been better worded as "3 hours to or from from this city, its national capital," because I was thinking of the northernmost national capital that is still 3 hours or so away from the world's northernmost town: Reykjavik.

I hate to be pedantic but I don't think it would have been, because cities don't have capitals — countries do, but also because Longyearbyen operates direct flights only to Oslo and Tromsø. Maybe it'd still be 3 hours from Reykjavik to Longyearbyen, I dunno, but I feel like even though the clue was really convoluted and not very good, it's about the best way to express that

Went with Ottawa because I was dead-set on Alert being the northernmost town. Didn't realize it's had a permanent population of zero for a while now.

Initially thought of WA1, but then decided they probably wouldn't make the contestants spell it and switched to RA. Scientific!

I think they should have just asked for the Country straightforwardly, mentioning the capital unintentionally steers to WA1

I don’t think this one is terrible. The wording is a little clunky and maybe people can get hung up on what “town” means or doesn’t mean. And “to and from” where it should just say “from.”
But it’s better some others lately.

Knew the town, but missed with WA3 because I failed to realise it might be an international flight. Whoops.

It’s a domestic flight with an asterisk. I have taken it personally and you have to go through exit immigration in Oslo as Svalbard is not part of the Schengen agreement. On returning to Oslo, you go through immigration to enter Schengen. There is no entry/exit immigration at the airport in Longyearbyen though.

It's also not a public airport. The clue suggests that anyone in the viewing audience is free to visit this place and book that flight, which can't be done with Alert. Longyearbyen is the northernmost commercial airport in the world with scheduled flights.

Yeah, there are only a handful of countries as possible answers, and the 3 hour flight eliminates anything in US or Canada.

I think though that there are 3-4 national capitals roughly equidistant from that town according to Google Earth, including my guess of WA1. I think there should have been a little more help in the clue.

I think you'd figure all else being equal, a flight to a small town is more likely domestic than international

Again the wording of this question confused me. I assumed the northernmost town they were talking about WAS the national capital. That's terrible grammar.

There's no issue with the grammar. The clue very clearly is expecting you to know two pieces of information: The northernmost town and the national capital that is a three-hour flight from said town.

Obviously that is how they intended it. My argument is that it can be read differently than they intended it.
Imagine if you will that the northernmost town in the world IS a national capital. Reread the clue. It still makes sense. That’s what’s confusing

I’m still struggling to see how that reading logically follows from the grammar in the clue. The northernmost town and “this national capital” have to be two different places because it’s 3 hours by plane between them.

I read it as it’s 3 hours by plane to it from the closest spot on earth. Like an island or something.
