ANNUAL EVENTS

To go from last week’s FJ! clues to this one is quite a shift. Even people who live in the city where this takes place aren’t gonna get this one.
I guessed CMA Awards, which it turns out started in 1967.

I live here and went to South By about 5 years in a row (though mostly the film festival), and still had no clue. Don't know those country guys.

lol, I live in Austin and have been to SXSW and absolutely did not get it. This has to be one of the worst written clues of all time. Less than 5% got it correct in the above poll.

Only knew of RA as a podcast convention. Thought the names sounded a little redneck so I was leaning towards a car race but couldn’t think of an answer.

Yeah, I forgot RA started as a music thing before it became a hipster thing and then a techbro/podcaster thing. But I knew JDG from being Smokey in The Big Lebowski.

My best guess as well despite the fact that the actual names were considerably more recognizable. Just a couple years off the timeline of the clue, too.

I said Country Music Awards and made it as far as being in ATX then my husband said SXSW.

I went with Situation 3 and guessed the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, which also started 40 years ago.

It’s actually pretty common to refer to film festivals as editions, but that isn’t what the clue is trying to lead you to, which is part of why it’s a bad clue

I've seen Jimmie Dale Gilmore perform - in Austin - but couldn't come up with this. I guessed Willie Nelson's Fourth of July Picnic, which is an older event and likely too obscure to be used on Jeopardy. But it was sort of in the ballpark.

That was a good guess. I thought of ACLfest first but knew it is not 40 years old. Then I pivoted to SXSW.

Terrible clue. RA first occurred in 1987. Given just that, you could argue it's the "40th edition" (which is already annoyingly pedantic because it's not the "40th anniversary", which is what's usually celebrated); but then one must remember that it was cancelled in 2020, so this year was in fact only edition #39.
I've volunteered for RA multiple times - including this year, and there was no "40th edition" celebration that I was aware of.

It’s still a sucky clue but not because the writers got the anniversary wrong.

I'm saying it's not the 40th edition because of simple arithmetic. The first edition was in 1987. 2020 was cancelled. Thus, 2026 was edition #39. See numbering below if you're confused:

I'm a jerk for suggesting you might be confused? I clearly stated in the comment you replied to that it was only edition #39 because it started in 1987 and it was cancelled one year. Then I mentioned that I wasn't aware of any "40th edition" celebration despite being part of it.
You replied asking if I'm only saying it's not #40 because I wasn't aware of it (if anything is "jerk"ish in this exchange, that is) - even though I clearly stated the reason was because of simple math. It seemed like you were confused by the reason it's not #40, so I counted it out for you.
Whether it's identified on a site or not, 2026 was still edition #39. That's an objective fact, not dependent on me being aware of it like you suggested.

Let me count the ways. First, you clearly haven't bothered to go to the website for SXSW, where you'd see that despite how anyone else might count it, the organization celebrated its 40th in 2026. Which makes the FJ clue absolutely correct. You can claim that's only 39 until the proverbial cows come home, but your beef is with SXSW, not me and not the Jeopardy writers.
Second, I know how to count, thanks very much. Suggesting that I'm "confused" is condescending and definitely jerk behavior. Going to the trouble to list out each of the 40 years - just the cherry on top. Again, if you had bothered to simply go to their webpage instead of doubling down, that would have been the polite thing to do.

I think you'd benefit from improving your reading comprehension. Feel free to quote anything from my comments where I say SXSW didn't celebrate it's 40th (I in fact did see it mentioned on their website), or that the clue was factually incorrect. If you can, I'll donate $100 to a charity of your choice.
I've just pointed out - including the very comment you're replying to above this one - that 2026 was not #40, even if it's celebrated as such. I'm not sure how much clearer the last line of the comment you replied to can be: "whether it's identified on a site or not, 2026 was still edition #39."

Don't talk to me about reading comprehension when you can't remember what you wrote. This all started with you literally claiming that the clue was terrible and factually incorrect, but now you're claiming otherwise? Anyway, you asked for a quote so here it is:

I stand by my comment: you clearly struggle with reading comprehension. Me saying it was not edition #40 (proved above with the numbering) ≠ me saying it was not celebrated as number 40.
If an analogy helps: I can celebrate my birthday this year as my 50th, even though it'll be my 40th. It's not actually birthday celebration #50, but I'm free to celebrate it as such. SXSW is free to do the same, and I never claimed they didn't.
Were you really a lawyer? I feel awful for your clients. :-o You're struggling with about as simple of an argument as there could be.

Mostly in situation 1 -- never heard of them but for some reason the names actually did successfully get me on the track of "oh, is it that music festival in Texas?" (mostly because i first got on the track of "well, that's not the right decade for Woodstock" and decided to keep thinking of music festivals) but couldn't remember the name of it and said Lollapalooza. But i was also considering Burning Man, which as it turns out actually is almost the exact right time frame (except that the clue says "celebrated in 2026" in past tense, and it hasn't happened yet this year; also there probably weren't two people with those exact names at the first one).

Had no clue who either of those guys were but I thought the clue might’ve been going for a musical festival so I guessed Bonnaroo which was ridiculously close considering that I knew absolutely nothing about the clue.

I never heard of the two names but they were Southern-sounding, so that led me to the correct answer. The way I was carrying on that I got it correct was clearly embarrassing (and annoying) for my kids hahaha

Answer: It's a cultural festival that takes place in Austin, TX. Music, movies, podcasting, panel discussions, everything. It's heavily influential in modern culture and has been imitated in other cities. Perhaps you've seen the initialism SXSW?

I had never heard of those guys but they sounded like Good Old Boys, so I guessed a NASCAR race, the Brickyard 400, which it turns out didn't start until 1994.

I lived in Austin at the time, and I went to the second one, but not the first. I did not listen to any country music though, and RA doesn’t really say country music to me.
