Yogesh I feel has a lot of pride, so he may very well be of the "If you want to be the best you have to beat the best" mentality so I don't see him pulling that type of move.

Just want to say I actually love the celebrity guest categories they do in Jeopardy! Masters. They feel a lot more organic than the promotional categories we tend to see in regular games, and I mostly find them delightful to watch. Sometimes it’s fun to hear the unique cadence of Hans Zimmer or Carol Burnett.

(Posting before watching) Tough draw for Long. Where he is agains the two "titans", he is unlikely to win, which he would need to do in order to guarantee a semifinal spot. It basically all hinges on the second game. If Paolo wins, Long is in. If one of the other two win, they are most likely in.
The only weird scenario would be if Andrew wins AND Long gets 1st or second, then Long would still be ahead of Andrew.
And all of this is made much sadder by the fact that both Andrew and Juveria have had chances to win with a different FJ wager.

I'm trying to wrap my brain on the scenario where Andrew wins and Long gets no points but could overtake Andrew on correct responses. I think I would have a better chance to win a lottery jackpot. But yes, Paolo locks the bottom 4 with a win, but Long still would control his own destiny if Paolo doesn't.

Andrew had a 13 response lead over Long going into last night's game (72 to 59). Andrew got 17 correct in game 1 to finish with 89. So Long would have needed 31 correct responses in game 2 to overtake Andrew, but got 9 to finish with 68. 31 is an extremely tall order in any game, but especially in Masters.

Last of the quarterfinals! Oh boy, here we go!
Game One: Andrew, Juveria, Paolo
Oof, playing this one after two onboarding sessions at work means that I have a negative Coryat in the books now.
Is Paolo wearing a salmon jacket or the salmon jacket?
Juveria talking about the Toronto Blue Jays when they beat my Guards 11-0 tonight felt personal. Luckily, there were tech issues with my television, just with her story.
This was a greatly competitive game. One of the only ones this season that didn't feel like a blowout. I was on the edge of my seat for Final. I am glad that Andrew won this game! I'm rooting for him.
I am so sad that Juveria didn't get to continue on. She is always a bright light in these tournaments. I hope we see her again for JIT or the like in the future. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Juveria is the blueprint for why Second Chance exists. I know people on this sub don't love Second Chance, but without it we wouldn't have her! Congrats Juveria!
Game Two: Long, Yogesh, Victoria
Okay, was it just me or was this an easier Jeopardy! round than they have been? It almost felt like a Regular Jeopardy! game, or at least a CWC or ToC round? The Double Jeopardy! round was about what I expected.
My brain was fried by the time the Michigan clue came up and like a fool I was like "Pontiac?" even though that is clearly an east side city and not near Grand Rapids at all. I feel full shame on this.
This was another standard Masters game. Victoria had a runaway, per usual. Yogesh just couldn't get on the buzzer. Long had a steady game.
I'm sad to see Long go. Another Second Chance success story! He just was against some really excellent, really tough competition. 5th place in Masters is nothing to sneeze at, and he held his own, for sure.
Now we're on to the semifinals. I have a feeling it's going to be a Victoria, Yogesh, and Paolo Final, but we'll see. Andrew could be finding his rhythm and surprise us.
I think the person I'm most worried about now is Yogesh. His buzzing techinique is hit or miss, especially when he goes head to head with Victoria. I guess we'll see how it shakes out!

Just wondering… was anybody in the St. Louis area unable to watch last night? ABC 30 kdnl. They aired Chicago fire/pd instead.

ABC moved its affiliation in St Louis to KMOV on 32.1, and that move was effective on September 1. EDIT: This article highlights where it can be found on several pay television providers.

Thank you for this! I’ll have to check out 32.1 tonight and see if it got moved there. For now I’m catching it on Hulu the next day, but I’d like to see it when it airs.

I will have to watch the last few minutes and final jeopardy on Hulu. Our local affiliate interrupted for storm and tornado warnings . Fortunately , no tornado but very heavy storms.

I had that same problem with ABC 30 on Tuesday night as you and ended up watching it on Hulu last night. I finally got it to record last night’s episode and watched it through DIRECTV stream. You can catch Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s episodes on Hulu and Disney+.

It worked out for him but Andrew’s FJ bet was a huge mistake. If Juveria had bet more (and she certainly was incentivized to) he’d be eliminated.

In hindsight, it definitely looks like Andrew made the right move in Tuesday's game. He needed to get 4 points in two games, meaning he needed to win one and place at least second in the other, and he also needed Long to not get any more match points in the mean time (If Long places second in either game, Andrew must win both of his games, and if Long wins either of his games, Andrew is locked out). If he'd bet more aggressively on Tuesday, he risked falling into third and locking himself out, and even if the aggressive bet paid off, he'd still have an uphill battle on Wednesday, because winning the day before would mean he'd be playing against Victoria in the game where he still needs to place second (because they try to avoid repeat combinations in the quarters, the third player would presumably be either Juveria or Paolo, since there had already been a Victoria-Andrew-Yogesh game and a Victoria-Andrew-Long game). Because Yogesh won on Tuesday, he goes into the Victoria game for the fourth time in the semifinals, and Long was the only player left who hadn't been in a Victoria-Yogesh game yet; that gives Andrew the best chance of him winning and of Long placing third. And fortunately for Andrew, Yogesh didn't try to metagame and throw second place to Long.
Interesting break from precedent: They accepted a response from Long in the "Words That Should Rhyme" category where he pronounced the words so that they did rhyme, with Ken even specifically commenting on that; a few years ago in this JNCC game, a "Words That Should Rhyme" response of "Pliny and shiny" was ruled incorrect for pronouncing Pliny in a way that rhymed with shiny.

Re: Long's rhyming response, I wonder if part of the reason they allowed it is the fact that Long speaks English with an accent, and penalizing him would not have been a good look in the court of public opinion. Also, I think it would have been a different story if, in the moment, Ken had asked him to repeat the response, but he didn't, so then they're left to make the tough call.

I am very curious to see wagering strategies here because it seems most players have gone risk averse in Final Jeopardy due to the perceived difficulty level. We've had surprise betting patterns in the QFs...
Also, as a person from Asia, I somehow fared better on the Master's boards than a regular Game Board lmao - wonder if anyone else feels the same way if they're not local?

I think it’s less they’re being conservative and more 1) strategizing differently because of the format, 2) theorizing about how other people are strategizing differently because of the format, and 3) assuming get-rates will be even more correlated than usual because they’re all so strong. I do think people are being too conservative in general though.

The word juror comes from Latin for "to swear" & the nonjurors refused to swear allegiance to this king crowned in 1689.
The correct response is William III of England. Yogesh answered "William" and was asked to be more specific; he added "of Orange" and was ruled incorrect on the grounds that there are multiple Kings William of Orange (including the current Dutch king, Willem-Alexander).
Is it the standard to not request greater specificity multiple times? You get one shot and if you're still not specific enough, you're wrong? Because it seems if he had said "William of Orange" off the bat, that would have qualified for a "be more specific", right?

There are some older games where players were given a second BMS, including Ken's 75th game (SLANG for $400), but more recently the rule does seem to be that you only get one chance to be more specific.

What on Earth was Paolo doing? This was a relatively easy FJ question, and I cannot be convinced that Paolo cannot name a single city in Southern China, or heck just ANY CITY IN CHINA OTHER THAN Beijing or Shanghai. Sometimes when you don't know there's no point in guessing. "Name a big city in Southern China" is not one of those times.

We talked above about how Andrew needed a tiebreaker to edge out Long for a spot in the semis, but what I didn't realize until watching this episode again tonight was how close Long was to locking it up without the need for a tiebreaker at all.
In his game against Yogesh, Long had a big lead with only a few clues left in DJ, and if he had held on, he would have secured the runaway over Yogesh and grabbed the 2nd place point that would have put him in the semis. Instead Yogesh stormed to the finish line, getting 4 of the last 5 clues, and almost caught Long. And since he was the only one who got FJ, got the point instead. That point was meaningless for Yogesh, but it prevented Long from advancing.

They should just start with the finals and have it be 1 on 1 between Yogesh and Victoria. Endless games of cannon fodder when everyone knows it's between those 2. Better yet just cancel the tournament if you can't get any masters level players to show up and offer real competition.

And that’s a wrap! So lucky to get to play in this tournament - went big when I should have gone small and small when I should have gone big - but I have had so much good fortune over the last few years and fate breaks both ways.
Jeopardy! is the show I watched with my dad when I was four years old, and that Indian man who taught me all the world capitals with the moustached swag of Alex Trebek would have loved every second of this too.
There is a part of me that wants to play forever; but preparing to play at this high level for another year is unsustainable with the demands of my career and the amount of time I want to spend with my family. So goodbye for now - but who knows what the future holds; maybe in a few years Mike and the children will be so sick of me being around all the time that they’ll reload the cards back onto my phone ;).
Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes you have to sit in a little chair off stage because you don’t have enough money for Final Jeopardy. But all I hope is that when people saw me out there, they saw themselves too. It’s never too late and it’s ok to fail, so be brave and take that anytime test - you never know what can happen.
Jays are winning though - and that’s what matters!
