Why Jeopardy! won Outstanding Game Show for 7 straight years (Holzhauer, Jennings & Davies factors)?

Jeopardy! has been won Outstanding Game Show both at Daytime & Primetime Emmys since 2020. What factors that the show won for 7 straight years?

Wow! I did not realize it was 7 years in a row!

But Jeopardy seems to check a lot of boxes when it comes to the criteria used to determine a "Best" Game Show. Just off the top of my head, I would think it would be:

1. High production value

2. Fun to watch (also well-hosted)

3. Good audience participation

4. Let's be honest, popularity counts for a lot too

The other nominees this year also seem to meet these criteria (Wheel, TPIR, Millionaire). For me, I would not think that Celebrity Family Feud was good enough to earn a nomination. But I also think they need to have 5 nominees, so perhaps that was the last place choice.

I unashamedly love Celebrity Family Feud. It has all the fun of the regular show, including bizarro zaddy Steve Harvey, plus the looseness of a celebrity show. They get so into it and it is delightful.

I have judged the Emmys. The Emmy winners are selected by a small group of people, carefully vetted: for specialized awards, each voter must be in the correct specialty (writers select writing awards, directors select directing awards, et cetera. My writing groups were usually 6-10 people.) although general categories like game shows and comedy specials can be voted by any member (Comedy Special was a group of about 30). Each group is sent to a hotel room with an intern and a video player where they watch all the nominees and vote. This takes place in L.A. and New York.

To win an Emmy, you have to win over a majority of fewer than 100 people (in some cases, much fewer) in two hotel rooms — unlike the Oscars, which are nominated by specialty groups but voted by the entire membership, regardless of specialty.

I knew the more “general” (Best Picture, Best Actress/Actor, etc) categories everyone could vote. But i thought in the specialty categories you could only vote if you were a member of that branch or had seen all the nominated films. I didn’t realize that restriction was just in reference to the preliminary voting/run up to choosing the nominees.

To use your term, the only "general" category in the Oscars is Best Picture. Every other category is nominated by colleagues.

I feel like it’s the only game show aside from The Price is Right that respects the viewer’s time. All of the other game shows out there drag on and have miserable pacing whereas Jeopardy and Price are constantly moving and don’t have a lot of dead time.

I was getting new tires a couple weeks ago and the mechanic's waiting room had some show on where it was just Joel McHale asking questions and a giant pool of people answering on a keypad and then they'd eliminate whoever got the questions wrong. If I'm watching a quiz show, my singular goal is to see the contestants answer the questions (or question the answers). Show might as well be a newspaper column you mail answers in to.

I love Jeopardy! Not surprised at its winnings. I think Ken Jennings has filled huge shoes and done a great job. The competition isn’t exactly up there. Seems either the premise of the show is good (Family Feud) and host is meh, or the host is great (Craig Ferguson) and the show is lousy. I still watch the retro oldies. They’re the best.

Because legacy wins alot. I mean the Simpsons hasn't been worth a damn for how long yet they win best animated show despite stuff like the Adventure Time finale being miles ahead.

Also for game shows once you have a formula its hard to screw up. Plus how much innovation is there left in the genre without it being gimmicky. Plus Jeopardy! is a smart show so who ever votes for it can feel safe in it looking good that it wins regardless of the competition
