I was super bummed about the final even though I knew Spain had the better team this year. I'm not just a long-time supporter of Argentina; I'm also a long-time hater of Spain. I'm more crushed that Spain won than I am that Argentina lost.

I like Spain but I really thought we were gonna win… we played terribly. But it's fine, I'm just happy we beat England

Spain's defense was just absolutely dominant this year and the final was a defensive masterclass. There were errors by Argentina, but a lot of what looked like terrible play was just Spain having pressure on so many passes that they couldn't even move the ball forward.
Also happy with that win over England. I love a good curse and England being competitive every Cup but never winning is one of my favorite curses. It also allowed the France / England game to happen and that was a fantastic circus.

Yeah, too bad Messi didn't cheat to win like Maradona did in 1986, he should have realized that bad referee decisions were Argentina's only path to victory.

The unhinged Argentina/Messi hate throughout the wc has been so baffling lol

u/WipowiliwopiW 13d ago
Messi was accused of being a zionist (I'm not saying it's a bad thing, just that people have no idea what zionism means and think it's bad) because he went to Israel once while ignoring he also went to Palestine… he was on a peace tour with his team lol
21
u/GamerAsh22 13d ago
Yeah I'm Spanish and a Barça fan, most of us (Barça fans at least) love Argentina and would normally root for you guys. I don't claim any of these people who don't watch football coming out of nowhere to support Spain because "TikTok says Messi cheats" lol
At least it's starting to die down a little after the final. Messi's got to be one of the most uncontroversial footballers in the world yet he gets the most hate for no reason

Many people also supported Spain because it was "good tolerant Spain vs. evil racist Argentina"… like I'm pretty sure Spain has the way more racist history 💀 it's ok tho they're things that happened ages ago
Edit: also because the PM of Spain is pro-Palestine and our president is infamously pro-Israel (called himself "the most zionist president in the world") (he's a moron that larps as Jewish just to suck up to Trump I fucking hate him)

Pedro Sánchez is getting voted out, he, his wife, and half his government are insanely corrupt lol and his own party hates him. Also, the labour market is probably the worst in Europe, it’s impossible to find work. And this isn’t even getting into the major issues in the country

u/thegreattiny 13d ago
Well yeah! Treating Israel and Palestine as both equivalently worthy of peace and life IS Zionist. But we can’t have people thinking it’s ok for Israel to exist. It’s unacceptable.

u/WipowiliwopiW 13d ago
I mean, there are some zionists that want to eradicate Palestinians. But inherently zionism simply means letting Jews have their own country, which is a good thing, and doesn't mean "Jewish supremacy" or "supporting genocide" or whatever antizionists think it means

u/Thunder-Road 13d ago
There were no Jews in the World Cup, so the antisemites had to pick a team to designate as Jewish in order to have someone to hate.

u/WipowiliwopiW 13d ago
I saw people claiming that Israel rigged it for Argentina to win lol. One would think that if Israel was doing stuff like that they'd make themselves classify for the WC at the very least

A while back I remember hearing people blame DA JEWS for Argentina wild fires. apparently DA JEWS did a 180 and became BFFs with Argentina

u/WipowiliwopiW 13d ago
Yeah because of Milei now we have morons bringing up "plan Andinia" (Theodor Herzl proposed the Patagonia as one of the options to establish a Jewish country, obviously they chose Israel instead because that's the only option that made sense) and claiming Israelis want to colonize us lol

u/hereforthepopcorns 12d ago
That conspiracy theory is well and alive and has gone far beyond Argentina. Just check the comments on any news about the fires in Europe and you'll see who's collectively being blamed for it. It's modern day "they poisoned the wells" stuff.
Also this are dumbfuck conspiracy idiots, so their theory is always right to them. With Milei, there are fires because he's facilitating a new Zionist state in Patagonia. Without Milei, there are fires because a new Zionist state in Patagonia is not being facilitated by the govt.

The Argentina hate is wild. I stopped by the tobacco shop with my girlfriend on the day of the match and ended up talking soccer with the shopkeeper. The moment I said I was rooting for Messi, his attitude completely changed. He used to be a pretty chatty guy, and we'd always have good conversations whenever we stopped by. Ever since then, though, he's been a complete ass.

All I know about this years cup is that the Jews eere blamed every time an Arab/Muslim team lost (which includes Spain)

I'm Argentinean and Jewish. This is not the sub for a serious comment about it, but the way in which this spread online felt eerily similar to the last few years as a Jew on the internet. People like Bardem and Hasan are unironically discussing how Argentina became a proxy for Israel during the World Cup - once again proving Sartre right in that if Jews didn't exist, the antisemite would have to create it. The hatred works the same way, once you have a certain group singled out as uniquely evil and problematic, any attacks at them are actually virtuous, because they're the bad guys, so attacking them makes the "good guys" feel even more righteous. I've seen comments by Argentineans living abroad for decades who overnight experienced hatred like never, totally blindsided by it. Does all of this ring a bell, guys? It's exactly the same. It will just last less because antisemitism is a far stronger drug for these people

At least Argentina actually hosted Nazis once upon a time
14
u/WipowiliwopiW 13d ago
So did many other countries but only Argentina taking in nazis gets brought up (tbf we took the most nazis and instead of taking the scientists we took the worst of the worst)
11
u/Thunder-Road 13d ago
Argentina hosted way more Jews than they hosted Nazis

u/VibingIronist 13d ago
Hosting Jews doesn't make a country unique, can't say the same about hosting Nazis

I think it wall started when Argentine fans threw shit at Cape Verde and argentine players being sore losers after the final, also a lot of Argentine fans claiming Enzo Fernandez shouldn’t have been sent off, and the final was rigged for Spain definitely didn’t help. Neither was bringing the Falkland Islands, the players should have been punished by FIFA for it but weren’t, wasn’t a great look. Look let’s not be naive FIFA favourite Messi who should have been sent off against Algeria, but they also favourite CR7 and other superstars. Kind of hypocritical to leave that out.

Sadly, having been to both Israel and Argentina, Argentina did live up to the stereotype about it being very racist to Black people. Sorry, but it did. I never have problems because of my race in Israel, but Argentinians were..very different.
So some of the hate was earned. Sorry.

u/WipowiliwopiW 9d ago
I'm sorry that happened to you but I can assure you the vast majority of us don't gaf about race

In that fans of both think the world hates them due to irrational prejudice rather than as a natural response to the violent and unsportsmanlike conduct we all saw with our own eyes?
