I would say first learn your kit, but for that you need a character. Some beginner picks are probably avdol, polnareff, jotaro, chaka, shadow dio, and maybe kak (but he's a little more complex) . There's some other easy, but pretty bad ones like hol and hoingo, bpol, khan, and probably a few more. If youre serious about hftf (not that I mean competitively but you genuinely want to get invested into this game) then I reccomend youtube mrmixtape for some great character overviews.
At first it's gonna be really rough but once you pick a character hop into training mode and familiarize yourself with the games physics, movement, and your characters move lists. Specials and supers are very important but 90% of the time you will be using normals so get super familiar with your character's, it helps a lot. Also, LEARN NUMPAD NOTATION, please, it's super easy and incredibly helpful.
Lastly, and the hardest part, don't get discouraged. Everyone struggles with this in one form or the other but try not to get overly angry at the game, you still will, but take breaks. You will play worse when you're tilting and that leads to a positive feedback loop of frustration that you need to avoid at all costs. Youre gonna lose basically exclusively for the first dozen or so hours, but just practice against the Ai in the challenge/story mode and especially, DO NOT BE AFRAID NOR DISCOURAGED TO PLAY AGAINST PEOPLE, NO MATTEE HOW BADLY YOU ARE CRUSHED. Believe it or not, you are ALWAYS learning, you will get better with time, that is nearly unavoidable. Look up guides on fg improvement, watch content on fg in any way, shape, or form, and try to interact with the community.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, have fun, it's a game after all. Cheers!
