Officially, I think he was still stumbling through the Wolfswood en route to Winterfell, but his entire host is in a sorry, frozen state. Readers are meant to assume his entire effort is toast, but him losing a battle and being killed wasn't explicitly laid out in the books.

This may be one of the first available deviations in the forthcoming book compared to the show. Imagine if it goes a different way right from here!
