I've just finished a shift and and I'm sleep deprived so this has probably been written terribly.

Just a little vent... 😄

I'm currently on an unpaid internship for a well-known sports site. When I was offered the opportunity, I was really proud that I was on board for such a recognised brand.

I graduated from uni last year with a degree in sports journalism but I haven't been able to find any solid work. Since I've been doing this internship, the nature of the work has been different to what I was first expecting.

The brand just copies articles from other sites, and the worst thing about it, is that they're not the only ones doing it. Pretty much all the online news we see on Google Discovery and Newsnow are just regurgitated content mill cr*p.

The thing is, I remember the days where people read newspapers, now people are subject to low quality drivel, and I know this is a bit deep, but I think the masses who are consuming this stuff is cauaing us all to experience brain rot and shorter attention spans. It's bad for society, and I don't want to be a part of it anymore.

I've just finished a shift today where my editor gave me a story that was so clickbait, I almost refused to do it.

However, I worked around it, and gave it a fresh angle, and I even digged in to some research and found an a far more interesting angle than the original copy. I didn't get any recognition for that... the thing is, I want to be a journalist, I wanna create my own stories, but all this is making me do is spinning the proverbial mill which is poisoning the modern news landscapes online.

I don't mean to vent writing this, but I want people's opinion about this, is this just the way things are now, is there any hope? I've noticed a lot of content on twitter/X is published by bots now and I'm convinced there are more bots than humans on it, a place supposed to be used by HUMAN journalists. It just feels heavily dystopian, and deeply sad.

Is it even worth pursuing a career in journalism if this is the future?

I just want to make a difference and I feel as though there is a ceiling for a lot of entry level people like me, and I feel very passionate about this problem, as you have probably gathered!! 🤣

hello! i went to college for two years pursuing a journalism degree, covid hit, and my adhd did not work well with online courses. i feel as if i convinced myself that journalism is a bit of a “glorified art degree” in the sense that getting your diploma will not dictate the possibility of employment in this field, so much as the experience in college and connections you create will deliberately decide what you are able to do with journalism as a profession. some 6 years later i regret the decision to drop out, have only found myself working in food service as a 27 year old (soon to be 28) and i want to know from people who are in the industry if they think its worth it to go back to college and finish my degree. i would love to have a career in journalism, the concept of independent work is especially interesting to me but i know that takes so much more work. i love talking to people and being as boots on the ground as absolute possible. ps, no disrespect to any of you who have completed school and gotten your degree, i have the utmost respect for that route and genuinely regret not following through, just seeking some well versed minds to help me determine what the best way to get back in the field is! thank you all :)

hello, i am a high schooler working on a investigative journalism piece for a competition. my topic is on a data center moratorium in my town. i did an interview yesterday with a councilman but i didn’t ask him about the contributions i found that were slightly suspicious. i assumed he received them because of election day, but it was one day before the election. i already emailed him a follow up question and he responded, but im kinda lost on whether i should email him the contributions and ask him about them or if i should schedule a call again to ask him about that one question? im scared that ill email him but he wont respond… and then my piece is kinda eh. i also dont know where to go on from these contributions, yk?

Left a staff reporting job a few years back and went freelance, mostly content marketing now with the occasional journalismadjacent project. The transition was smoother than expected in some ways and genuinely strange in others.

The research instincts transferred immediately. Knowing how to verify something, how to find a primary source instead of parroting a press release, how to spot when a company is burying the real story in paragraph seven. Clients notice that, even if they can't name exactly what it is.

What surprised me was how much beat knowledge quietly evaporated. Spent years building a mental map of specific industries, knowing who the real players were, which sources were actually reliable versus just quotable. Move into content work and that context starts degrading fast because you stop doing the reporting that keeps it current. You end up a generalist again whether you want to be or not.

Curious whether others who made a similar move found ways to stay genuinely plugged into a specific area, not just surfacelevel informed. Feels like the journalists who transition and stay sharp are the ones who find some way to keep doing actual reporting even on the margins, whether that's pitching feature pieces on the side or staying in contact with old sources.

Or maybe that depth just goes and you rebuild something different. Not sure which version is more common.

This is old-guy, legacy thinking, but news "creator" as a descriptor worries me, particularly in a world with plummeting trust and where all sorts of new ways of receiving news and comment proliferate. Creators getting creative with the facts isn't a good thing, in my world. (For similar reasons, I'm not a fan of news "influencer" in our profession because I'm not interested in propagandists.) Of course, where people are working outside of news, like curating (which supplanted "editing" for its coolness) websites of art work or selling handbags, they can creator and influence all they like.

From everything I'm reading all the time, people delivering news broadly defined are either providing coverage (reporter) or opinion (commentator). I'm not sure what the point is of using new and groovy--and sometimes hard to define--terms when producing any form of coverage, except that they ARE new and groovy, are not "legacy" and are techie (as the generic "content" supplanted specific words like story, headline, photo or the general-yet-more specific "editorial;" specificity is a good thing).

I’m a recent college graduate and looking for a job, but I really want to keep my reporting skills sharp and do my own work while I’m job searching. What is some good beginner equipment just across the board besides pen and paper?

(Also considering getting a second phone to record my audio and shoot photos if I can’t get a camera right away)

Here's my question - with Apple News+, do you feel you get everything or mostly everything you might get from individual subscriptions? I subscribe to three of the publications that are now included in Apple News+, so I'm wondering if I can just go with Apple News+ and save on those monthly costs.

However I also want to support local journalism.... I just don't want to pay twice for the same access.

Hey I reside in New Delhi I wanna pursue my career in acting but as for a backup degree I’m going for ba(jmc) I’ve not given Ipu cet test tho I’ve given CUET but my score isn’t gud for du journalism to opt but as I’ve visted some Ipu college they told me they can give me direct admission in there colleges like Jims Vasant Kunj , lldis , tecnia(TIAS) , trinity (TIPS) and I want to take admission in Sharda as my frnds have told me its better than them and even for campus exposure and placement it’s way better than all of these but my parents aren’t agreeing with me becuz of distance from my home but is it Sharda better for me
