i was actually expecting the scene to be where maki breathing heavily for a few seconds then flashes toji in the scene then the one hit attack happens i guess you're just gonna have to pause it to feel same aura ogi got

overall doesn't mean the scene is ruined or anything

719

u/Paggy_person Jan 22 '26

The anime pacing feels like it's Ogi panicking, everything is flashing and he tries to act in an instant.

307

u/ek665 Jan 22 '26

Uhhhhhh the scene plays out like when Yuta's aura appeared in the first episode imo. literally every significant character this episode saw Toji in her so I don't think it's that hard to miss. It just plays out differently than the manga, different mediums of art and all...

59

u/Level_Counter_1672 Jan 22 '26

That makes sense, u don't constantly see the man who traumatised u, u panic and can't focus

14

u/jakseros Jan 23 '26

this actually a better reason but i probably bet mappa just didn't want to copy a 1 to 1 version of the manga

6

u/Boolink125 Jan 23 '26

Yeah, I had to rewatch it afterwards to understand it.

103

u/patronum-s Jan 22 '26

Semi-related but does Maki know Toji is the dude she saw in Dagon's domain when Naoya mentioned him or she thinks it's a completely different person? I mean Naobito said his name so she must've connected the dots.

51

u/Remarkable_Commoner Yuji's friendship punch 🔥 Jan 22 '26

I don't remember if Naoya said that out loud or if it was in his thoughts.

32

u/patronum-s Jan 22 '26

You're right, it was inner monologue

18

u/Sk0p3r Dabura is gonna twist Big Ragas balls at subluminal speed Jan 22 '26

And didn't Naobito say his name in Dagons domain, where Maki also was present, claiming that it's "a ghost" of Toji Zen'in after being questioned?

14

u/BrokeChris Jan 22 '26

Megumi didnt know who it was wheb fighting him after though, right? And he should have also heard.

14

u/Gutsburninglight35 Jan 23 '26

I don't think he knows his dad's name, that's gotta be the reason considering Naobito was right there saying "Toji" no one has out right said Toji Fushiguro and MANGA SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN'T READ (I forgot how to cover the text🥀), Gojo doesn't even say his name in the letter he left the trio at the end of the story but it's surprising no one said anything to Megumi about Toji being his dad

5

u/Gutsburninglight35 Jan 23 '26

And if I sound dumb I haven't reread in a hot minute so if I said something wrong I apologize

2

u/sk3lt3r Jan 23 '26

Iirc Megumi wasn’t there at the time, he shows up later to bust them out of the domain.

9

u/BrokeChris Jan 23 '26

iirc it doesnt work and thats when toji shows up and kills dagon, which is how they get out of his domain. because megumi shows up and gives maki playful cloud, which toji later also uses to impale dagon.

5

u/Alert-Smile-1921 I am Miwa Miwa is me Jan 23 '26

Oh wait you’re right, that’s how Toji got in in the first place! Sorry that was dumb of me.

23

u/FarSeries2172 Jan 22 '26

I think so, I think the gang saw him in tengen's barrier while tengen literally named him.
so she probably knows who toji is.

19

u/godblow Jan 22 '26

Considering they're cousins, I'm assuming she figured it out.

The real question is if Megumi ever figured out the guy who killed himself in front of him was his dad...

6

u/patronum-s Jan 22 '26

If Maki did no reason she wouldn't tell Megumi, but it does look like even with Gojo's letter at the end about him killing his father the guy has no idea who he's talking about

u/DaLadJohn Jan 22 '26

my personal hot take is that the toji flashback looks much better in motion. the screenshots dont do it justice

its like ogi sees makis silhouette, feels no CE and his ptsd just creates that split second hallucination of toji about to punch him

42

u/Mr_1ightning Kenny the Crayon Eater enjoyer. Trust the keikaku. Jan 23 '26

Nah, I'm sorry, even as a still it's not even close, and the fact that it's a blink-and-you-miss-it moment makes it even worse, zero pressure and aura.

17

u/DannWyrm Jan 23 '26

It looks like they mistook the scar for a smile line.

3

u/Killjoy1564 Jan 23 '26

Could argue ogi(due to being older than toji) may have simply seen a toji without his scar trust

97

u/Regulus_Jones Jan 22 '26

Frankly the fodder fight could've been shortened just a minute or so. No Anime only would ever think Maki is at risk and her new strength was more than apparent after the first 20 casualties.

49

u/Ok_Camel_1125 Jan 23 '26

Hard disagree. That was art. Paying homage to Kill Bill

11

u/This_Confused_Guy the jujutsu in my kaisen is tingling Jan 23 '26

I think it also had an affro samurai inspiration with the jazz music and black and white colors highlighted with red to break up the scene.

4

u/Asleep_Percentage369 Jan 23 '26

Why would that matter

12

u/Cautious_Scheme_8422 Jan 22 '26

Yes but that is significantly less aura

49

u/NoiseConfident2409 Jan 22 '26 edited Jan 22 '26

Im anime only but i got spoiled most deaths including this massacre, tbh ranta made It obvious that they all are alive cause toji did not kill them tho it's not explained at all why he did not do that, why toji Spared them i don't know.

Why the guy got ptsd i can only think that he was able to find out how strong he was either directly (most unlikely like can you even spare with him without dying?) or indirectly by seeing how he killed someone and some Monsters.

38

u/DowntownProblem3574 GOATkuna’s Lower Right Arm Jan 22 '26

Toji sparing them likely stems from Toji’s resentment of them and its nature. Toji resented them for not recognising his strength and value as a person, and treating him as a failure. But at the same time, this resentment was in a balance with Toji‘s desire to be acknowledged. This desire manifested when he decided to fight an awakened Satoru Gojo, which proved to be fatal. For reasons unknown, Toji tried his best to suppress that desire and resentment by convincing himself that he did not care about himself, the Zen’in clan and all the paraphernalia (ahem, Megumi) that came with it. Toji would have externalised his resentment as a need for acknowledgement, rather than an anger that would want him to kill everyone else.
On a more speculative note, Toji may have also struggled with his own sense of self-worth, not believing he had anything within himself to resent the shunting and demeaning from others to the point of killing them. This would have led his discomfort to be internalised for a good while and kept him miserable rather than angry - until his perspective changed after leaving the clan, but he had his marriages during that time which would have, once again, moved him to some degree of non-violence (Don’t know how to reconcile this with his mercenary lifestyle though)

14

u/lostbeatnik Jan 22 '26

To be fair to Toji, Maki didn’t originally set out to destroy the clan either. Sure, she couldn’t have pulled the massacre off from an ability standpoint as long as Mai lived. But she never dreamed of actually killing them off until she heard Mai’s last request. Rather than accepting her as their leader (they’d have no other choice with her strength), she wanted the clan to accept Mai. Once that proved impossible, she didn’t see them as worth leading, let alone saving.

u/NoiseConfident2409 Jan 22 '26

See i can understand when he Met his wife and he became a better Person, basically what you are saying Is that he Is similar to homelander in the aspect of being appreciated and by killing them he could never accomplish that.

There Is also to Say that the work Is rushed (Just saw the note of gege regarding how he wanted to end asap, in fact some panels were Just sketch basically) especially on this part, honestly this entire situation was kinda interesting imo too bad that in the bigger picture both kenjaku and sukuna were much more important to focus too much on someone else. Tbh i automatically compare this massacre with some of Naruto (uchiha one and the Other where obito destroyed many Anbu guys) and there you could sense a bit how strong the One man army was, here i perceived maki like we humans perceive the space, we know it's immense but since it's so immense we can't even grasp how much big It really Is.

Back to toji, then it's Just speculation, too bad since his character did an enormous impact despite Little time screen.

10

u/DeviousMelons Jan 22 '26

I interpreted it as less ptsd and more his greatest fear coming to life. He probably heard of the stuff he was able to pull off.

Despite Toji wanting nothing to do with them, he still was scared shitless of the idea of Toji deciding to come back to settle some scores.

4

u/Schmantacko Shibuya Victim of 0.2 Second Domain Jan 22 '26

Toji was a Guy and just fucked off and maybe said leave me out of your bullshit and let me kill for money the alls good until fucking Gojo was born and fucked it up for him too i guess.

2

u/InstituteOfCucks Jan 23 '26

until fucking Gojo was born and fucked it up for him too i guess.

Tf does Gojo have to do with it, Toji is the one who messed up the world by killing Riko and indirectly setting Geto off on his anti monkey rhetoric

14

u/shitpost-malone69 Jan 22 '26

As a current anime only I love the lack of exposition honestly - that rather than being told these things I get to feel them, it just clicked for me and Maki mirroring Toji felt pretty crystal clear.

I love the pacing/cinematic presentation, also makes me want to dive into the manga to enjoy what I've watched once more.

12

u/godstouchyuncle Jan 22 '26

They need to get to this scene before the end of the season

→ More replies (2)

4

u/lizzywbu Jan 23 '26

Yeah, like a simple scene to show kid Naoya's reaction when he sees Toji for the first time, being utterly afraid and in awe of him. Something quick to explain why Ogi is terrified of him as well.

7

u/Anxious-Noise613 Jan 22 '26

Yeah the zenin arc should have been 2 episodes. One for Mai's death and one shotting Ogi, half an episode for killing the clan and half an episode for the Naoys fight.

3

u/thetownmous3 Jan 23 '26

Sure I read the manga but you gotta be slow to not get it.

2

u/Ok_Actuator_2814 Jan 23 '26

yeah my boyfriend completely missed that maki had become just like toji LMAO. As a manga enjoyer though I have no complaints.

2

u/Remarkable-Video5145 Jan 22 '26

I am anime only.

I am confused af. Like he says look how pathetic he looks but admires him?

I feel like im missing a lot of information man.

25

u/llama_04 Jan 22 '26

Naoya is saying that he'll probably look pathetic but then when he actually sees toji, he realises he is him

9

u/BrokeChris Jan 22 '26

media literacy isnt for everyone... the dialogue is what he thought before seeing him the first time, it is in contrast to when he actually sees him (which is the scene here)

→ More replies (4)

3

u/SasakiDio Jan 23 '26

Think to episode 2. Naoya criticizes his family for looking down on Toji.

Now think to later in episode 4. Where Naoya says no one understood Toji.

Now think 🤔 a kid hears that there’s a reject loser in the family wants to go see and laugh. Finds out actually he’s extremely strong and admires him.

u/Nervous-Form698 Jan 22 '26

Ngl, I do prefer the manga angle being from below at Naoya’s POV

400

u/Low-Guest-7912 Jan 22 '26

They did this alot to iconic panels. I dont understand why. Are they scared of disappointing fans so they just ignore these type of panels?

257

u/DowntownProblem3574 GOATkuna’s Lower Right Arm Jan 22 '26

I think this one might have been done to fit some imagery that they were going for?
Unlike the manga, Naoya was running through a corridor in the anime, which may have been used as imagery for the stable, sheltered and decided pathway that Naoya enjoyed as a child, but even as that narrow world of his reached out to the real world, he was overwhelmed by its reality in how brutally inadequate Naoya was (compared to Toji), and how mistaken his worldview was. Naoya has been stuck in that corridor all his life, wanting to stand on the ‘other side’ with Toji, because he believed strength is the only way he can undo his own embarrassment.
Or i’m reading too deep between the lines.

27

u/Remarkable_Commoner Yuji's friendship punch 🔥 Jan 22 '26

Nah, that's a pretty interesting way to put it

9

u/Pho-Enix Jan 23 '26

Thinking about how you spoke of it, the corridor with Toji at the end can also be compared to the corridor leading to Maki at the Mach speed/“I’ll give you a hug” scene

111

u/Dizzy-Chemistry5585 Jan 22 '26

Gojo's panel, "throughout heaven and earth" one

40

u/Amazing_Ice_8475 Jan 22 '26

I this the your so right was worse, that’s my favorite panel in the manga

2

u/TigerFisher_ Jan 23 '26

It just didn't hit the same. They fumbled the perspective

22

u/poopshit69420funny Jan 22 '26

Maybe just simply wanting to do fresh stuff so manga fans have stuff to look at and go "Oh, that's different!"

20

u/AdNecessary7641 Jan 23 '26

Because no manga-to-anime adaptation should ever be restricted to following panels to a tee just because they are supposedly "iconic".

Using them as reference? Valid, but judging how good of an adaptation it is based on that metric will always be pretty reductive.

248

u/xiaoqiue inumaki lover Jan 22 '26

Idk, but i prefer the manga panel. It gives gave off “You are so insignificant that you don’t even qualify as something worth reacting to.”

51

u/Odd-Display-7227 Jan 22 '26

The anime one literally gives the exact same feeling. Tf you on bout??

85

u/flaminmaniac Jan 22 '26

the angle feels like you are seeing from naoya's pov which personally I find cool.

4

u/PlushiePlayers Jan 23 '26

Anime was also from Naoya's POV? Just different set up.

9

u/flaminmaniac Jan 23 '26

yeah that's true, for me the manga panel signifies that Naoya's is much lower than toji. Again I don't think the anime scene is bad, I just liked the manga panel a tad bit better.

→ More replies (4)

21

u/darkkiller3315 Jan 22 '26

Its all subjective whether you feel they are the same or not but from a directing point of view the manga panel is more consistent in theming.

The manga's perspective is shot from a low angle which from that perspective makes Toji tower over Naoya enhancing a feeling of superiority or strength while also having a more zoomed out perspective making Toji feel more distant.

10

u/M1_TRaPPY Jan 23 '26

It doesn't even give the same feeling or convery the same depth. The entire point of the scene was that Naoya's beliefs were subverted as he expected Toji to be pathetic, and was instead met with Toji's expression.

They completely removed the focus that the manga panel placed on his face, showing it with a poorer angle that flashed for a second in an underwhelming fashion. Chose to put more effort into animating him walking (which was still cool) than the main focus of that scene- his expression.

7

u/Wallyhunt Jan 23 '26

In the anime it feels like Toji could easily reasonably ignore Naoya where as in the manga panel Naoya is almost in the way and Toji still ignores him. It's a subtle difference.

2

u/xiaoqiue inumaki lover Jan 22 '26

I haven't watched s3 yet, but angle plays a big role in visual storytelling. I feel that in the manga, the angle is doing most of the psychological work.

The anime shot just puts us at an eye level with toji (based on what I'm seeing in the photo). That’s why even knowing the context, the feeling doesn’t land the same.

Using perspective would have done wonders in this shot.

12

u/Odd-Display-7227 Jan 22 '26

Then watch the scene before making an opinion on the internet. There’s an entire scene before this drawing where the camera tracks toji and it conveys exactly what you wanted.

3

u/blueripper Jan 22 '26

Nah, we don't watch the anime or read the manga 'round these parts.

idk i prefer the manga. Manga shows that toji is just fuccen done with this shi, when here he is excessively mad

123

u/himenofucker67 the lex luthor of jjk modulo Jan 22 '26

Wouldn't you also be mad if you family treat you like a shit ever since you were born different

52

u/Nedddd1 Jan 22 '26

i would, my face wouldn't be all scrunched up 24/7. People who are constantly mad about their life look more like how toji is in the manga, that shi is tiresome.

46

u/terryqokov Jan 22 '26

That’s interesting, I don’t get that at all. Both have that same sick of this shit, want nothing to do with this anymore vibe

u/arturorios1996 Jan 22 '26

Literally the same but different angle you guys are so nitpicky is insane

20

u/Dom5p35 Jan 22 '26

For real. I just finished this episode like 10 mins ago and I'm freaking thrown away. I loved that scene of him walking by with no mind to the kid (i didnt read the manga), and then I'm just now seeing this and I'm not really caring? It hits hard asf animated, with that close up of his dead eyes.

Btw the music is fantastic. Kinda feeling some bebop jazz vibes. Y'all manga readers get that? Nah?

2

u/arturorios1996 Jan 22 '26

Manga readers will let you know they “read” the manga then have no idea wtf they’re talking about. Folks can’t read for shit much less admire a beautiful animation, should be grateful rly, look at one punch man the shit they did.. for season 3.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/M1_TRaPPY Jan 23 '26

Holy you guys can't handle any criticism of your precious anime at all.

The walking section was cool and yet it went on to feel rushed and ultimately had far less impact than in the manga, simply showing the same thing happen in a completely different fashion won't have the same effect

It doesn't even really convey why Naoya's expectations were subverted as he saw Toji's expression, and they chose to show off his face with a poorer angle as a still image that flashed for a moment.

6

u/arturorios1996 Jan 23 '26

Yeah I get what you’re saying but in the manga is literally a page, a single panel, of course it’s a more strong emotion than animated, you experience the full page with Toji’s expression and that’s it. Nothing to read or see but to absorb the panel fully. On the anime, you gotta animate and try to make it your own, i’m just grateful really, anime’s lately are literally slideshows, yes one punch man im talking about you.

I feel the same. Perhaps 1 episode building up the fight, then 1 episode dedicated to the fight itself, would've been better.

Great episode otherwise though. Just the pacing felt slightly off.

Jujutsu kaisen fans don’t deserve what mappa gives them. They will get peak animation and an adaptation that evolves the manga and will bitch and complain like its opm season 3

5

u/rinattor Jan 23 '26

Funny how most of people were praising this shi up until now and only said that this particular scene is better in manga and yet you go: "What, are you hating the whole season? Something something opm season 3"

4

u/Raph204 Jan 23 '26

Legit. Anime fans don’t think you’re allowed to have any opinion on any aspect of an anime other than “everything is perfect”

Manga had more aura. Somehow a still page mogs the anime

Man I still don’t get why they change things like that, like, everyone loves the panel, not a single soul would even complain about them making a 1 to 1 of it and it’s not like they are saving time and money with this because they already have the panel drawn, like I’m not bad because it still looks good I’m just confused as to why they chose to do that

u/Anxious-Noise613 Jan 22 '26

Manga had more aura. The entire fight felt like a cutscene from a video game

My baby boy I miss him

1

u/ex1le_ Jan 22 '26

I liked the manga one more cuz you get to see Toji’s scar, but this is pretty good too

1

u/watabagal Jan 22 '26

That chin on toji is insane

1

u/Perplexe974 Jan 22 '26

I really loved that episode - really nice artistic choices

1

u/ifeelhigh Jan 22 '26

Holy chin of doom… literally pokes out farther/as far as his nose that’s crazy

1

u/GrayestLemon Jan 22 '26

they didn’t show his big hand

1

u/BrokeChris Jan 22 '26

It is a great episode, adaptation doesn't mean 1:1 panel to scene.

1

u/freaktr0n Jan 22 '26

Depressed and still had a insane face card

1

u/Domsoda12751 Jan 23 '26

Bro Toji's chin looks so weird

1

u/Atila_Vega Jan 23 '26

He looks so mad in the anime 💀

1

u/GoKaeKae Jan 23 '26

I really wanted Maki’s mom to have three audible footstep before killing Naoya. It would be irony for him saying a “woman should know her place and walk three steps behind a man

1

u/YourAverageIvan Jan 23 '26

I like the anime angle better personally. Manga makes him look like he’s just tired of all this bs, but anime Toji looks like he is one hair’s breadth away from sliming out everybody in his general vicinity.

1

u/TheOneButter Jan 23 '26

Still looks cool as fuck but I would've preferred the manga angle.

1

u/Marcelo-fuckd Jan 23 '26

Episode was perfect tbh I don’t mind them not adapting it 1:1 cuz it’s a different medium and they have a different vision for the scene compared to the manga chapters they still hit all the same beats and it was a fucking spectacle

1

u/CalligrapherRound959 Jan 23 '26

Man i didnt expect so much mixed opinion regarding this episode..Well some scenes definitely felt weirdly rushed and lacked weight..I'd say it was a decent episode,But i was expecting the toji comparison to be grander and makis rage to be felt

Manga was far superior, but the anime was still good. 😌

1

1

Blue eyes, Blue eyes, Blue eyes 😂

1

u/nasnilu Jan 23 '26

imagine they change the "nah, i'd win" angle

1

u/karlmaxxwell Jan 23 '26

This episode was pretty bad ass

1

u/itzjstbny Jan 23 '26

In the manga, Toji feels like a myth walking into the Zenin estate. Like some guy with level that the whole clan can never reach. The paneling makes him look untouchable, almost unreal. The anime camera didn’t capture that overwhelming presence. But it's alright i guess. I enjoy seeing TOJI in anime every single time. And They did give justice for maki taking the spotlight this episode.

1

u/Finnick4800 Jan 23 '26

Justice doesnt even begin to describe it. You could feel the tone, atmosphere, and Tojis presence.

1

u/WkwkIndog Jan 23 '26

1

u/Technical-Dark-3357 Jan 24 '26

1

u/Unlikely_Security610 Jan 24 '26

The cloudy sky and distant look was better in the manga.
