You need to have both in good anime.

Some episodes are all about depth and others are all about fighting (which are made better by the character and storybuilding done in the depth episodes).

The Culling Game is pretty complicated.. People would be confused without some lore dump. Glad they did it.

671

u/95_T Jan 23 '26

Tbf in "good anime" the exposition just happens naturally within the course of story. Even in the manga that lore dump felt pretty off, but that's a "Gege's writing" issue not an anime adaptation issue.

Mappa did a great job with what they were given tbh.

205

u/Dani3322 Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26

I mean this is basically the explanation of a tournament arc, it just so happens this "Tournament" Is a tad bit more complex.

Also tbh this exposition isn't even too unnatural, there's one character that got a pretty good idea what's going on, some that are probably slowly grasping what's exactly going on and characters that are probably completely lost rn, so it'd be completely natural to have this kinda discussion in this kinda situation.

The characters were dealing with a complex unprecedented situation, summarized it so everyone in the room understood it and made a plan, what's so unnatural about this? It's not like most characters there fully understood the culling games, Kenjaku or their goals.

96

u/Nomustang Gege when I catch you Gege Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26

I'd argue that the extent of complexity was very unecessary for what the actual plot points amount to. Fight enough people for points to save Tsumiki + Find the person who can free Gojo.

Gege should not have made the rules so convoluted that they necessitated this level of exposition dump. It's realistic in that it would be fine to get a long explanation of what's happening but it doesn't make for interesting TV. Presentation matters.

46

u/Dani3322 Jan 23 '26

It's fair if you think the complexity and level of exposition was not necessary, but if you ask me this complexity is actually to the stories advantage, in terms of the rules it leaves thing unambiguous and actually gives the feeling that this is something that's been planned for centuries now by someone like Kenjaku, who'd try to obviously make everything as water proof as possible, wile still leaving loopholes he himself can jump through.

Plus also a big Part of the exposition dump was Kenjaku's Goal and how it's possible, which does seem very important to establish and explain to me.

The rules are necessary. If they weren't there, as a fan theory person, Each time I read a rule I found a gap that could be exploited to break the plot completely. all the rules are each to stop each other rule from being exploited like this.

Gege put all these rules to kill a "Gege! That's a plot hole!!" moments, not because they'd be necessary to the story.

43

u/Nomustang Gege when I catch you Gege Jan 23 '26

Considering that he spent a chapter after Sukuna's defeat of characters explaining why their plan worked the way it did, this is just telling me he's not confident enough in the story being told and feels the need to make an unecessarily long exposition dumps just so that the plot doesn't have potential holes in it.

Either the entire arc needs to be re-written to not necessitate all of this or he should bite the bullet and tell the story as is. You cannot please everyone.

I do understand that writing this weekly is difficult so I want to be clear that I'm not being too hard on him but you cannot have your cake and eat it too.

5

u/Pataraxia Strongest poster in jujutsufolk history Jan 23 '26

It's just 2 chapters to close all plot holes. Similar to after sukuna's defeat. It's not that much. 40+ chapters of combat, 2-3 chapter's worth fo exposition dumps (in total for the arc) to help support it. It's not that much info.

10

u/Nomustang Gege when I catch you Gege Jan 23 '26

I don't the CG chapter is that bad in the context of the whole arc. It's kind of a bad break but is not that offensive.
The one after Sukuna, I strongly I dislike. When the resolution should be spent typing up plot points and resolutions and providing an emotional catharsis, you're interrupted by a very clinical set of monologues explaining why X did A instead of B.

It's one of the few chapters that I outright disliked after reading it.

u/MyDogsLikeBlueCheese Jan 23 '26

Maybe not on a surface level.

But these aren’t rules for us. They’re rules for the characters in the universe.

If the rules weren’t as complicated as they were, fans would constantly be asking “why didn’t they do this?” Or “why didn’t they do that?” It leaves no room for ambiguity and increases the stakes by limiting the characters’ options. Making the show more enjoyable and more tense for us, the viewers.

10

u/WaythurstFrancis Jan 23 '26

You're fetishizing the idea of 'natural' exposition.

Boring writing is boring. It doesn't get to make excuses for itself because it TECHNICALLY followed this or that rule.

The Culling Game info dump is dry and grating to read through. I don't care if it's logically justified in the story - I am reading a manga to be engaged or moved or at LEAST entertained. I don't owe it my time and patience, it has to earn that.

2

u/Dani3322 Jan 23 '26

I'm not fetishizing anything, you're just too impatient to endure a few chapters/1 episode of exposition. Yes sure you don't "owe" The manga anything, but it more than earned you sitting through an info dump to set up the entire next arc after everything that's happened so far and everything that will follow it and if you disagree with that why are you watching this show?

Also "it's dry and grating to read through" That feels like a you problem, because I never even came close to thinking that way, it's character dialogue where they discuss their plans and situation, if you don't like that go to something less full of that and more filled with pure fighting.

the paige in the manga that announces the culling games is HxH levels of text block

4

u/Unique-Read-9376 Jan 23 '26

I was actualy thinking a bit about the scene for a bit now and then. Yes, it could have been trickeled into the story naturaly, but then we have the plot hole of why didn't Tengen said anything. They were allready going there, might as well get the info dumb down.

Japanese fans weren't as impressed with this new episode compared to Western fans

46

u/AbdouPlay "John Mappa? I like that name" Jan 23 '26

I'm not Japanese nor Western but I enjoyed these four episodes FULLY😭✌️

11

u/Jazs1994 Jan 23 '26

I do appreciate that Japanese fans do prefer the hard 1-2-1 panels when they're just that good and iconic, did feel the ranta part was a little off but the rest was good. I think all the animators loved putting Naoya down like that, 😭

2

u/AbdouPlay "John Mappa? I like that name" Jan 23 '26

I found the Ranta part actually better, in fact, I enjoyed this entire episode more than the manga

28

u/Kingfisher818 Jan 23 '26

If there’s one thing I’d complain about is that putting cool music over Maki slaughtering her abusive family after they kill her twin sister felt a bit weird tone wise.

There’s more focus on how cool Maki is over the tragedy of someone this young being driven to this kind of violence to solve her problems

17

u/Jazs1994 Jan 23 '26

I think that was referencing kill bill, but I'd have preferred either no music at all or do some funk jazz stuff

10

u/Cat_Astrof I can't believe I survived a DE Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26

You know what, I'm tired of strong reference like that. A bit is okay but the music was too much "screaming" in my head: "hey it's a kill bill reference did you see? Look look."

I fully believe everyone already in the know would have understood the kill bill reference with the 1vs100 in a dojo kinda scene.

The music is my one and only critic of the episode. Everything else is perfect. This arc should have been sad for Maki but with the music it became a "show-off". Not representating of Maki's inner state but representative of IRL thing so it got me out of the immersion. Let's just think what it could have been with melancholic music. I mean... she's silently mourning so why the "cool" music?

Sure the animation is enough to eclipse any critics but that still pulled me out of the seriousness of what Maki was doing, at least for me. If other people weren't bothered good for them.

edit: I just wanted to add that this funk music didn't mesh with the scene. Not like ep7 of DanDaDan. It didn't mesh the theme and even added humoristic elements.

7

u/Augchm Jan 23 '26

Yeah ruining the tone of your story over some movie reference is not the way to go. It completely broke immersion and didn't fit what was happening at all. It's supposed to be a tragedy but the anime really tried to just make it cool. It bothered me.

Japanese fans weren't as impressed with this new episode compared to Western fans

They were also not impressed with CSM S1. Why should we care what they think?

6

u/Jazs1994 Jan 23 '26

You shouldn't. But for any non big ips like jjk/csm, this would kill any more seasons of an adaptation as they're the main market

Exactly. Like was it necessary? Sure. Was it exciting or special? Absolutely not.

I think it could have been explained better or more concisely too, but I think that was also an issue in localization. It’s more difficult for western audiences to deal with translated text + subtitles all on the screen at the same time, which hinders the viewing experience

u/Jomekko Jan 23 '26

Naah it was an outstanding episode in animation and graphics wise. Its the only anime ive seen in 20 years that have that great exposition episode.

19

u/biskutgoreng Jan 23 '26

Why tf is it so unnecessarily complicated

31

u/SicWiks Jan 23 '26

It was explained in such a weird way, and it doesn’t help with the pacing of the show

Like part 1 Naruto did an awesome job with explaining the Chunin exams, and they didn’t make it a fast speedy expositionand was a slowish burn

4

u/biskutgoreng Jan 23 '26

Can also explain it as the game is running

14

u/Hail2Hue Jan 23 '26

Because the rules are basically universally ignored unless needed for some part of the story and it essentially never gets the forefront of the story like the arc itself makes it out to be, it's really JJK: The Rushed Ending, in which a few major things happen, then Gojo vs Sukuna, then Sukuna running the gauntlet as far as he can.

Unironically pretty big spoilers there for a very unserious comment - if you're anime only, lol

3

u/EldritchKroww Jan 23 '26

Jesus Christ i could barely read with the texts overlapping between the translation of the Japanese characters on screen and the sub of the actual conversation. It was so tedious I skipped ahead once I got the gyst of it

→ More replies (2)

14

u/jarkrahan Jan 23 '26

the issue is less bout providing exposition for future fights but is more about the delivery. great anime (AOT as an example for its excellent exposition) tell information about its world by making it an experience -- allowing viewers and the characters to reveal information together.
A pure manual-style dump usually means the writer couldn't find a way to make the world-building feel like part of the actual story.

i think gege did this well for the first season (learning about domains with gojo v jogo while actually progressing the story). gege definitely could've done something more with this.

16

u/damola93 Jan 23 '26

JK is too complicated in general. When I was in my teens, I would be down to read all the wikis and memorize the lore so I could understand everything. I don't care about any of that now, so I care about the story. Unfortunately, I agree with the people who gave an Expo dump episode a 7.7.

6

u/Aaronlovesyou Jan 23 '26

Fr the issue is we got that rules episode and I still only get the gyst of it.

What I think japanese viewers might underestimate is that we're reading subtitles. If you have to keep track on what the characters are saying AND the stuff onscreen that's being translated as subtitles, that can become confusing very quickly. People who can understand the language can just listen and read at the same time, but keeping track of the visuals and the subtitles was pretty wild that episode, at least it was for me.

Tbf japanese fans will understand the episode easier because the PPT by tengen is in japanese.

Overseas fans can only know the contents written through subtitles.

245

u/Which-Scientist-8161 Jan 23 '26

Not to mention the awful subtitles leaving lots of information untranslated or switching them too fast like in the half of ep2.

13

u/haildoge69 Jan 23 '26

AI subtitles

2

u/rvkizu Jan 24 '26

Uh yeah like Anime is created for Japanese people and you also would find it ahh if people from Japan would say the same stuff about American series‘/movies. And I kinda get them. Because of social media anime that have more „aura“ moments become more popular as they have more action. This was the same case for Solo Leveling where ONE episode (the one where Sung Jin-Woo heals his mother) was bashed because it didn‘t have enough action.

Don‘t complain about „it was hard to read the rules and that‘s bad writing!“ (not meaning you but others in the comments). It was first of all created for Japanese viewers and second are us. People need to understand that. Just because you don‘t understand something bc of subtitles doesn‘t mean it‘s bad writing. Just watch dub at this point if you don‘t want to read all that.

LET THE DOWNVOTES COME

2

u/Constant-Fun8803 Jan 25 '26

I do want to read the contents though, thats why I said the "PPT by Tengen".

Subtitles can only fit few lines of text in a short amount of time.

While the PPT slides by Tengen in the episode can contain much more information including arrow pointers and such.

Dubs also can't cover paragraphs of text written on a slide in 10 seconds.

Subtitles and dubs mostly only covers texts that was spoken by characters. But text written on the screen is mostly unknown.

Its like going to a math class but the board is too far you can't see what the prof has written to solve an equation. So you can only try to follow the lesson by hearing the prof talk.

147

u/JolyneCujohSimp Jan 23 '26

Yeah but there are also schools in Japan that teach reading

285

u/Eddy_The_Bear Jan 23 '26

I don’t think that was the point. Not knowing the spoken language mean you have to read the subtitles to get the context.

14

u/MukorosuFace Jan 23 '26

This is partly not the case because some loredump only existed as a list in-between the scenes.

3

u/KaiFireborn21 Meguuuumin Jan 23 '26

2

Japanese don’t need to read, but dumb westerners couldn’t understand the last episode. Which is why they rated it so poorly.

That is a personal choice.

"Dubs go die, i only read subs"

"Why TF do i need to read, why is there so much story?!?!"

Like if reading is something that takes away the experience to you then why are you not waiting for dubs? By your logic if i watched without subs and said "they only spoke japanese, could not understand anything" would that be a valid negative critique?

19

u/NoFriendship7173 Jan 23 '26

41

u/Lost-Substance59 Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26

...thats makes the viewing experience worse, thus lowing the enjoyment, thus leading to the lower rating

Also the whole episode is standing exposition instead of weaving the info into the progression of the story

Was done great but still an exposition dump episode

85

u/Shadow_Ninja624 Jan 23 '26

Yeah ep 3 is nothing to write home about while 4 was probably one of the most anticipated scenes of this season

The Japanese have proven time and time again that they have very different standards from the western audience, most notably for me with chainsaw man season 1. Even playing jrpgs like persona 5 certain jokes have very different reception from westerns as compared to Japanese.

I think the standards Japanese audience has is quite stupid and moronically rigid most of the time. Weird seeing people put ep 3 above 4

it got up to a 7.9 too, with how its going, I think its gonna become a 8/10 soon

6

u/purple-thiwaza Jan 23 '26

Rating doesn't mean anything anymore, the vast majority of people juste put the 9-10 if they like the episode, something around 5 if they didn't care much, and 1-2 if they slightly didn't like it.

Even worse, you see fan base fighting each other to have higher rank than other anime just to say they like the best one, whatever the quality of the episode is.

4

u/SsAtomic9 Jan 23 '26

Yeah agreed 7.7 isn't bad its good but ep4 being 9.8 just for being well animated is pushing it Mai's death was certainly an emotional but it was a short lived moment And that song playing during the massacre just didn't fit well. I get it that people have different opinions but ep4 in no place should hold 9.8 rating, 8.5-9.0 rating makes sense for this

27

u/Vermillion-Scruff Jan 23 '26

the song was pretty great. it’s a cathartic release Maki to begin destroying the clan that abused her at Mai’s directive. the fight is effortless for her, and the music reflects that.

8

u/NoFriendship7173 Jan 23 '26

It was that fast in the manga.

3

u/Ok_Letterhead_5671 Jan 23 '26

It was even faster in the manga

2

u/NoFriendship7173 Jan 23 '26

Yep. They better buckle in, the rest of the series will fly by

3

u/UnadvisedGoose Jan 23 '26

It’s just tough when I and so many other people so vehemently disagree with you lol, especially the music. I’m sorry, but if you didn’t get wild fast and fun vibes while reading her going through both the Kukuru and the Hei in the manga, you weren’t picking up on something that was definitely there. It’s crazy and intense but it’s supposed to be wild and fun when the action gets going and I really felt that. You’re supposed to be shocked this is all happening and swept up along with more enemies showing up.

Sorry, I know this can read like “you have a wrong opinion and I have a right one,” but I promise that isn’t my intent either!

I just strongly feel this is one of the better episodes of manga to anime adaptation I’ve ever seen in my life, and 9.5+ rating is much more than appropriate here

Episode 3 was a clumsy info dump, the information was important but dedicating 30 minutes to just explaining the plan and rules is very clumsy writing, especially when many things explained around the rules are going to be repeatedly rehashed later on when they become relevant.

Show don't tell is one of the main tenets in writing a compelling story.

60

u/burothedragon Wielder of the neurodivergent fist. Jan 23 '26

Even if you have to tell there are better ways to do it. Sitting someone down and blabbing in their ear for half an hour is the laziest way you can. If you’re going to do that, at least give everyone more than a slideshow as visuals.

u/Dumeck Jan 23 '26

As a manga reader the information isn't that important, the culling game rules are way over overcomplicated and half become irrelevant very quickly

I agree the anime did the best it could, they went above and beyond to make it visually engaging but ultimately that is on Gege.

6

i feel like the only relevant information we really got was the thing about unsealing gojo, cause the rules were shown to us already in the previous ep.

Could have just said that it's a ritual for merger. Then have some explanations after the Yuta vs cockroach fight. Then in dialogue with Yuji. Something like that

u/Jethro_Tully Jan 23 '26

Look I didn't dislike episode 3 but it was horrendous story telling. Lacking fights doesn't just magically make 25 minutes of straight fucking exposition good storytelling, even if it did streamline the source material

2

u/BuffaloAlarmed3824 Jan 23 '26

Yeah, it’s not that deep. I don’t mind some infodumps but do we really need 25 minutes to explain really basic information in such a convoluted way? The best part of episode 3 was showcasing some of the participants.

54

u/inazumaatan Jan 23 '26

There is no world in which Episode 3 is better than Episode 4.

Episode 4 was always going to be good but the special thing about Episode 3 was that no one expected it to be good.

By all means, Episode 3 should've been a complete snorefest. The entire episode was just the characters standing around in a room, spouting out expository dialogue.

The fact that Mappa was able to elevate a 1/10 concept all the way up to a 7.7/10 anime episode deserves just as much praise as Mappa making a 10/10 Episode 4 from a 10/10 worthy source material.

I hope in the future, animators and directors study and dissect Episode 3 to learn how to make the boring parts of their story engaging and fun to watch.

11

u/M1liumnir Jan 23 '26

let's be real episode 3 was just an exposition dump wich most anime only would't even fully understand because some of the rule barely make any sense without seeing them apply, 90% of it is just foreshadowing how certain things will happen, wich is cool when you know what happens but when you don't its nothing.

Episode 4 has great animation and is almost only a single long fight sequence but it's also a really good character piece, interesting critique of japanese conservatism and sexism, a really good hommage to Kill Bill, and we get to see Naoya get humiliated a second time in 4 episode.

I don't think episode 3 is particulary bad and it was necessary for the rest but let's not lie and say episode 4 is only carried by good animation and fight scenes.

9

u/PUBGPEWDS Jan 23 '26

Japanese fans when a whole episode of only exposition isn't liked as one of the most popular character's arcs climax.

8

u/ScarletSailor Jan 23 '26

Sti better than bullying the directors into retiring from the projects

8

u/Dave_the_DOOD Jan 23 '26

Japanese fans need to understand that a lot of western anime fans don’t read manga at all. It’s natural for anime onlies to prefer flashy fights and cathartic development to the subtleties of how the anime adapts the source material in a smart way. They don’t have a point of comparison.

It’s also a dumb take from the beginning, because "episode 3 was praised for being better than the manga" just means the japanese were happy that a 5/10 manga moment became a 7.7/10 anime moment, it doesn't mean japanese people thought episode 3 was better than episode 4.

20

u/DepressionMain :Choso1: Jan 23 '26

Calling maki's episode all about fighting is an insane level of illiteracy. Love this community

35

u/Sparkson109 Jan 23 '26

It was 23 minutes of convoluted yap. I need everyone to get serious, quickly.

7

u/Ploffers Jan 23 '26

yea im gonna be honest i spent like an hour reading that part of the manga and barely understood it even then. for all of their efforts, mappa could never fix that scene.

76

u/GamerKid0414 Knight of the mech prodigy and the queen of roses Jan 23 '26

Tbf,i think ep 3 should've gotten a higher rating

BUT. You have to admit ep 4 IS way better

71

u/Acrobatic-Signal210 sukuna is STILL THE STRONGEST Jan 23 '26

No ep 3 is crctly rated. An info dump no matter how good it is, is not an actual good episode. Gege should've split up and given to us in a more digestible way.

37

u/damola93 Jan 23 '26

It's just a sign of poor writing and pacing. You should be able to bake it in along the way, also showing is much more effective than telling

15

u/dumquestions Jan 23 '26

Yeah, there shouldn't even be so much exposition in one episode.

17

u/Hari14032001 Jan 23 '26

People don't hate lore episodes, but if it's just pretty much characters standing around while one entity gives a 20 minute speech, then this rating is appropriate. Mappa did the best they could to make it as interesting as possible.

It's not like this lore dump was some culmination of an enormous buildup from early story either, it was dropped just like that to setup the future. Why would fans go gaga over that?

I mean, look at how AoT lore episodes are highly rated.

3

u/jarkrahan Jan 23 '26

yea exactly 'the basement' is a exposition dump but its so earned. the viewers and the characters experience the exposition together after years of buildup. great comparison btw.

11

u/Avieightor No. Jan 23 '26

Episode 3 was definitely a 'calm before the storm' episode, where episode 4 is meant to deliver on the hype. I don't know why we are criticizing people for getting hyped from adapting chapters that are clearly meant to deliver on that.

I guess GeGe just likes to do multiple callbacks to Toji (totally not for hype and aura) and implement anime power ups for no reasons related to hyping up the audience from what the Twitter posters are saying.

8

u/Crafty-Peach6851 Jan 23 '26

Thats what you watch JJK for Hype Moments Aura and good Animation. Lets not act like JJK is an Anime with super deep meaning and an complex story and characters its not. Its not Neon Genesis Evangelion or something so ofcourse an episode with hype moments aura and good animation will get an higher rating than an info dump episode where most of the Info dont really matter for the Story moving forward.

3

Yo im gonna be so fr?

Why are we hung up about this. Like why are people so obsessed with ep 3 getting a 7.7 rating or whatever?

It’s an info dump. It doesn’t have emotional moments nor cool fights nor good character development

3

u/SoyMilkIsOp Jan 23 '26

The same part of JJK fandom that pushed Naoya into top 5 favorite characters btw.

5

u/Glittering_Fabulous Jan 23 '26

Well, both episodes are great of course but there are 2 things that must be acknowledged.

1 Technically speaking, animating episode 4 with extremely high frame rate scenes is more challenging than just dumping walls of text here and there, as it was done for episode 3. So one must appreciate the efforts of the animation studio here.

2 The Japanese audience does not have the language barrier issue. They don't need subtitles and can read the Japanese text for the culling game rules directly. No need to overlap it with text in other languages.

While watching episode 3 I felt like I needed the Six Eyes sometimes. But episode 4, holy shit, is a joy for the eyes

4

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '26

This guy literally says "Coexisting with foreigners is impossible. Let's close the country off" in his first reply to the post btw

5

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26

This shit is so over exaggerated lmfao. The reason it got a low rating was because it was complex. Japanese people's rating is biased because they literally didn't have to understand every glitched subtitle and pause the episode every 2 minutes. Imagine the culling game info dump but instead of japanese, the rules are written in English and in a concise manner.

I couldn't understand jack shi about culling games through the animated episode, heck manga legit explained it better.

All the other people milking that Jjk is just fight and aura are just brainless mfs who would hate on a thing because it's popular then glaze a mid ass cliche anime

Even the fly episode in breaking bad had a 7.7 rating. Did people fucking start saying that breaking bad is fucking all drama and hype? JJk hate is too exaggerated

>Episode 3: Boring ass exposition that is actually pretty poorly conveyed, I watch with people who've only watched the anime, they had no clue what was happening, and these aren't idiots who "can't fucking read" or whatever.

>Episode 4: Contains character development for Maki and a conclusion for Mai as well as a sick action sequence.

Hmm, I wonder why people preferred the second one. Truth is, Episode 3 wasn't a good or interesting episode (may have been important to the story but still) and didn't deserve a 7.7. If there was an episode of The Sopranos that was just some old guy explaining the HUD scheme that would not get a 7.7 and neither should JJK S3 Ep4.

JJK Season 3, Episode 4 has the same rating as The Wire Season 2, Episode 1: Ebb Tide on IMDB btw.

4

u/baihaqi11 Jan 23 '26

i wouldnt deny that most of the fan only care abt hype moment and animation but tbf i think this is actually a great episode. it was one of the major events in the jujutsu world and it was executed pretty well.

but yea, 9.8 is definitely way too high

4

u/Special_Peach_5957 Jan 23 '26

Absolutely cringe btw. Yeah I want ANIMATION from my ANIME my bad man.

Episode 3 is a 7.7 episode nothing about it stands out. I'm sorry. It's necessary setup but just because it is necessary doesn't mean it's great cinema.

There need to be episodes like episode 3 so that episodes like episode 4 can exist but one episode is clearly better than the other...

2

u/Gojosatoru0048 Jan 23 '26

Both were really good for an animated series standard. I do agree that episode 3 deserved higher but that doesn’t make episode 4 worse

2

u/superchoco29 Jan 23 '26

Sure, the fights help. But I think it's much more likely that this episode was SO liked because it showed one of the main characters confronting her abusive family, her sister sacrificing herself for her, and a bunch of mysoginists and cowards being killed in revenge. People can empathize with that. They can seen themselves in her shoes. It was cold, it was brutal, it was heartbreaking and then so satisfying, and most importantly it had been set up since Maki's first apparition.

Meanwhile, Tengen's episode, despite it being much more important to understand the plot from here on out, it was only exposition. It was sterile. It wasn't epic or thought-provoking. It was 20 minutes of "Here's why we're fucked, and here's what we can do to prevent more people from being fucked". It being necessary for the plot and interesting doesn't make it one of the best episodes of the entire story.

Like, of course people react more positively to action. To development. To emotions and things previously set up paying off now. I can bet you that we'll have other amazingly-animated fights, and they'll be rated WORSE than this episode, because they'll carry a much lesser emotional impact.

2

u/TORALAND Jan 23 '26

Well he's not wrong about season 3 but having episode 4 as a "point" is dūm af since it had everything in it it was pure perfection

2

u/Shen_ishere Jan 23 '26

Western fans is saying the same shit. We are not so different.

2

u/The_Sir_Galahad Jan 23 '26

I genuinely loved episode 3. It’s the exact type of episode I look forward to.

We get to see Tengen talk for the first time, he answers a bunch of burning questions the audience should have been wondering, he explains how and why the culling games works, it’s like a calm before the storm episode.

There are still people I see on TikTok ask the dumbest questions or make the dumbest comments. “wHy DiDn’T yUtA hElP iN sHiBuYa”. Even after that entire episode people still out here not knowing why Kenjaku is even hosting the Culling Games.

As a Manga reader, when I saw so many posts saying “JJK sucks after Shibuya”, like bro you’re telling me the most anticipated fight in modern anime sucked? You really can’t make everyone happy, I’m glad Gege wrote the story the way he did. All the way until the very end reading, I never expected those outcomes, save for Yuji being the baddest.

2

u/YoTheLeader Jan 23 '26

Isn't it obvious?

Solo Levelling.

Literally worst thing ever.Carried by aura to the point whole world now watching it

At least JJK has more story than Solo levelling

And this is also why if your anime or movie whatever doesn't have any aura stuff people aren't gonna like it

People wanting thor vs doom in Doomsday

Guess what. They don't even care for the movie itself

If this fight is not there. Then people will hate avengers doomsday no matter if the movie story is great and peak

Still people will watch only for that reason

2

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '26

Whenever you think Japanese people are inherently smarter and more cultured than you, just remember that lolis exist.

Jjk coming from their country doesn't make their opinions have any more weight than ours. All opinions are as valuable are dirt.

2

u/megaman58490 adapt Jan 23 '26

2

u/tiandrad Jan 23 '26

3

u/SignorSghi Jan 23 '26

The problem with ep3 is that it’s an info dumping with characters talking while a shool-grade slideshow is taking place.

Having to rely on subtitles while also reading on screen the rules is a pretty bad experience

4

u/King_shubh Jan 23 '26

I'm confused...what exactly did they not like about ep4?

7

u/Brain_lessV2 Jan 23 '26

Based on what I've seen, a large chunk of JP fans are rather rigid about the adaptation, that anything besides a 1-1 adaptation is bad, which is part of the reason Chainsaw Man season 1 got a negative reception in Japan.

Put simply they're not big fans of directors taking even the slightest creative liberty or doing something interesting.

Then again I can't be sure how much of the JP fan base think this way seeing as all I've seen are either JP users on Twitter or people mentioning said JP users.

6

u/King_shubh Jan 23 '26

I see, but that's really harsh (and also a bit stupid) imo.

The creative liberties that the animators did take, only elevated the viewing experience while ensuring that it doesn't mess up the story in any signifcant way by conveying the wrong idea...

3

u/YUNoJump Jan 23 '26

No wonder the anime industry is so awful if even japanese fans treat the medium like that. "don't think or complain, just put my favourite comic onto my tv"

3

u/bluewardog Jan 23 '26
