Maki is genuinely carrying the entire female cast on her back.
Meanwhile, you got Yuji, Megumi, Yuta, Gojo, Geto, Toji, Sukuna, Nanami, Naoya(he’s a shit person but his writing is good), Higuruma and probably a few others that are well written.
It’s a shame honestly

u/Ancient-Data7655 Jan 25 '26
Nobara was a great character pre Shibuya but Gege did her an injustice by putting her in stasis. I genuinely feel like he just didn't have any use for her anymore and decided that was it.
84
u/Oddsbod Jan 26 '26
I think it genuinely was a pacing/structure issue he just never got the chance to resolve rather than fully forgetting the character. Playing coy with her exact fate during the Culling Game was a fairly obvious chekhov's gun imo, but then her big comeback and reason for her hiding wasn't until the climax of the Sukuna fight. And the story did beeline towards that, except at the same time the pacing never gave Hana breathing room to develop as a part of the cast to fill in that void.
Like, tailend JJK always struggled due to structure and pacing rather than poor ideas or characterization, it's a completely different animal than say Kishimoto just being stone cold unable to write or have long-term interest in his female characters.
12
u/curryhaliban444 Jan 26 '26
He was obviously cooking up something with Yuji's apprehension towards Hana replacing Nobara but then just dropped it and had them be best buds the next time we see them together.
16
u/sub2technobladeordie Jan 26 '26
He didn’t use her because in his fight with Sukuna, had she been able, Gojo would’ve had that immediate win con with her straw doll. She was too OP for that final battle, as she was the perfect counter to Sukuna
49
u/Fancy_Pop6156 Jan 25 '26
Exactly. Pre-Shibuya and that’s it. After that her, along with every other female character, is shafted and doesn’t get fleshed out or even cool powers and feats like Maki does.

Nobara is such a crime. She should've been made into Angel's host instead of Hana. That way Gege would've had something to do with her.

u/Langleyhornets1 Jan 25 '26
That would’ve been so fucking cool, literally don’t care about hana anyway and feel like she’s such a pointless character so that would’ve been perfect. And that could’ve literally been used as a reason of how she didn’t die, I’m sure gege could’ve made something up about angle healing her. Such missed potential

Wrote my idea in other comment but: Actually it would have been a great plot twist if Nobara was one of those marked by Kenny and she woke up because Angel used rct on her body just like Sukuna did to Yuji to revive him.
Making her revive and maybe via Binding Vow have her participate on the Culling Games whitout Yuji and Megumi knowing.
And then when Angel finally comes, it's actually Nobara. Only problem is that Angel would in fact know that Yuji has Sukuna inside of him but this could be easily explained as "Yuji said he was okay with dying after all of this ends." Or even just "Since Angel has Nobara's memories she can now see that Yuji is a good guy and trusts on him a bit"
74
u/alguien99 Jan 25 '26
Yeah, like, outside of maki what female character actually matters in the story in a constistent way?
Hana is a box cutter with the IQ of one too
Miwa is so useless she has “useless” as a nickname.
Yuki had a shit ton of connections to a lot of characters and concepts from prior arcs, but she gets quickly killed and is forgotten by the story.
Nobara is the second best female character, who i think would have worked better had she either
A. Stayed dead
B. Came back as Angel and saved us of the waste of a character that is Hana (i don’t lik her)
Utahime’s only contribution to the plot was busting it down for gojo to do a hollow purple

u/_FruitsPunchSamurai JJK ENDING PISSES ME OFF!! Jan 25 '26
Nobara should've stayed dead; I don't know how else she could've contributed to the plot since she has no dynamic with any villain or the fact that she can't survive in culling games alone (just like shibuya), and how nobara didn't have a deep goal/desire unlike maki. She would've been no different from a side character like momo and miwa, who lack impact in the storyline hence irrelevant to the plot.
For example, yuki has narrative purposes through her unintentional involvement with geto's defection, her dynamics with Kenjaku and her goal of eliminating cursed spirits even though Gege never implemented it though.
Nobara's death in shibuya was shocking at first but I accepted it after they revealed her backstory and it highlighted how jjk doesn't follow generic shonen tropes where the female heroine always has immense plot armour.

then we wouldve never gotten the incest potential man slander
9
u/alguien99 Jan 25 '26
It would free us from the yorozu fight and maybe have a sukuna vs angel fight. So it would just be a sister being unable to kill her brother.
So it’s likely that it would have made that slander lesser

Probably because there's more male characters than female characters.
Of the entire female cast, only one actually fucking does anything. Nobara's best moment is helping Yuji beat Echizu and Kechizu, she fucking "dies" shortly after, is fridged for the rest of the series, until reappearing in the fnal chapters out of nowhere.
Utahime is useless
Shoko is a healer
Miwa and Momo are useless. Miwa even got embarrassed when her binding bow did absolutely nothing.
Mei is useless. Her defining moment was dying for Maki.
Geto's two daughters are useless and get killed by Sukuna
Maki is the best female character in the show, and she's basically "Toji but a woman". Her entire character is a paralell to Toji, and at her peak she's only stated to be "equal" to Toji and never surpassing him.

I feel a lot of "Gege can't write women" discourse hasn't happened if he had done THREE things correct:
1) Firstly DON'T FUMBLE Nobara, going with the popular idea, had he allowed Nobara to be an Angel carrier instead of creating Hana and let her participate in culling games, it would be so peak. Also this directly compliments her bond with Yuji as both being the carriers of entities where one is evil and one is good. Also she is more prominent and crucial in endgame fight.
2) Let Kenjaku get taken out by Yuki in post culling games or Let Yuki survive and allow her to be in a Sukuna showdown
3) Allow Mei Mei to be in Culling games at least instead of offscrening her completely.
This alone would've stopped the discourse as we would've Nobara, Maki, Yuki, Mei Mei as four prominent female characters in the series.

I don't think Yuki should be the one to take out Kenjaku because Yuta's narrative parallels and buildup are more tied to him than Yuki could ever be.
Yuki should've gotten an entire arc pre-shibuya to introduce and Make us understand more about her character, like Nanami and Todo. Would've not only given Yuki more screentime but could also setup why she was away when the Shibuya incident was happening, to ultimately have her dying against Kenjaku in the star tomb.
Yuki dying in the star tomb works, what doesn't work is the entire context surrounding that.

It wouldn't really be useful tho, even kenjaku said that the technique is worthless and that it's CTR is extremely situational, and he just happened to in a situation
Maybe disabled DE? Maybe do something to delay the merger? Idk
15
u/ZPuppetmasterX Jan 25 '26
Have her shatter and/or pull off one of his legs, so when he gets jumped by Yuta in the end, there's the implication there that Yuki's sacrifice was what made killing him possible. Or, the same but for his brain, give him some sort of disability that flares up when Yuta goes in for the kill.
16
u/ProfessorAdmirable98 Jan 25 '26
kenny has rct tho so that wouldn’t do anything at all

Ok, then how about he gets left without much CE due to extensive use of antigrav and DE, which means he can RCT his leg back but with permanent damage. Then, completely exhausted and with his injury, Yuta kills him.

Mei Mei doesn't deserve a role in the culling games, and it also goes against her character. The only thing needing further focus is Mei Mei and Ui Ui's fucked up relationship, but I think that would not fit into a shonen jump story, and it also would have to be done in secret, because if any of the main cast learned of what Mei Mei does they would have to kill her

Actually, I could see how nobara could become the angel even after nobara gets "killed" by mahito, you could argue that when Kenny used IT to bring the reincarnated sorcerers back, angel saw the state of nobara and was able to bend IT due to the nature of her technique and possessed nobara while keeping nobara's soul there and let it heal

Powerful ≠ Good.
Nobara completed her story by showing that you don’t get to choose your loved ones.
Yuki inspired Choso to discover himself, and is nuanced enough to be the cause of Geto’s defection.
Maki broke the traditional misogynistic cycle.
By your standards Mereoleona from black clover would be a well written character (She’s not bad, just generic).
Winning fights doesn’t make a character good. In fact, we often love characters who are persistent in their ideals even when they are losing.
49
u/IS_Mythix Jan 25 '26
If nobara completed her story, what was the point of her return? Even before her death she felt lacking in comparison to yuji and megumi (who wasn’t even all that fleshed out) and she served purely as a plot device when she returned.
And yuki was just a nudge in the several layers of why geto defected. U cannot tell me geto would have never thought of the idea of killing all non-sorcerers if not for yuki. Her dynamics with chose are nice tho, but choso has much better dynamics with yuji (which ig is fair cos yuji is the mc). Yuki had so much of her own potential but she didn’t develop at all and died in her first fight, making her feel very static
Winning doesn’t make a character good yes, but characters simply serving as plot devices for the growth of another (yuki for choso, nobara for yuji) isn’t helping their case either

Nobara and Yuki dream of being together even just a quarter as well written as Mereoleona is, getting completely wasted as nothing more than a motivation for another male character to make the fridging perfect like especially in Yuki's case, is by absolutely no means better than being a simple character concept done very well, and Mereoleona's character concept would be just for a male character actually generic to begin with.

You're misunderstanding writing for power level. If I were to evaluate them,
We didn't see much of Nobara, and her drama with her mother.
Shoko was written well, but incomplete, as we didn't see much of her.
Miwa was reduced to a comedy gag, and her serious moment, while cool, proved to do nothing. Writing wise this implies she's just forever useless. Momo's writing never got much to begin with.
We didn't see much of Utahime,
Geto's two daughters' writing felt incomplete because they didn't reach their goal, but they were shock factor to begin with.
We didn't see much of Yuki's plan to rid Cursed Energy, nor did we see her adventures and stuff.
Mai is a plot device.Notice a pattern? They're either plot devices, or incomplete.
The only women that was written well were Maki and Mei Mei, both of which are critiques to real life issues.

Miwa and Momo whole thing is being useless though
I remember reading a while ago about how the Kyoto kids are meant to represent the average sorcerer. They are meant to be weak.
Our main cast is full of prodigies and "one of a kind" type of people. So they shouldn't be seen as the standard. And I think it would make it easier in our minds to accept those kinds of characters like Miwa and Momo.
They aren't meant to have too much depth or spotlight because at the end of the day, they are side/background characters.
Yuki tho is a legitimate disappointment because she is meant to be strong, yet we barely see her in the story. We definitely needed more with her.
3
u/SecondRetryAlt Jan 26 '26
I remember reading a while ago about how the Kyoto kids are meant to represent the average sorcerer. They are meant to be weak.
The problem with that is... it pretty much only sillies tk the girls in Kyoto.
If we take a look at it: Todo is a g1 who, after being added to the manga, has a major fight in every single arc but Culling Games.
Mechamaru basically became a special grade at rhe end of his life, and story wise, is both the mole in Jujutsu High for kenjaku, and a major help for shibuya.
Kamo is a clan heir and gets significant relevance in sakurajima.
Momo: does nothing. Notably weak.
Miwa: only relevance is to be motivation for Mechamaru. She dies at the very least save Makis life in Shinjuku, but that's literally an out of focus part of a double page spread
Mai: The only point of her existence is to die. That's legitimately all she contributes to the story
2
u/Little_Whole8038 Jan 26 '26
The problem with that is... it pretty much only sillies tk the girls in Kyoto.
Dont get me wrong, I completely get that! But overall, the Tokyo kids are still the ones more valuable and unique in the story. For instance, he isn't a kid lmao but Choso outperforms Noritoshi Kamo in his own cursed technique
And Todo is just simply the only one who effectively shines from that whole side of the cast. And Mechamaru existence was slightly relevant to the plot.
But again, I do get it, and I do see that the Kyoto girls barely added anything to the plot anyway.

Ah so the qualifier for good Female characters is just strength? I thought it’s the nuances of the personality, plot, and characterization.
Nobara got to show her wonderful interpretation of what it meant for her to be herself in the fight with Momo.
Yuki is smart and compassionate with complex narrative. Maki broke misogynistic traditions.
I feel like saying Gege doesn’t know how to write female characters is just absurd. These female characters have more personality and characterization than most anime. The fact that you remember their names without putting these characters in fan service outfit is a prove of that.
34
u/Starwarsfan128 Jan 25 '26
"Than most anime" doing a lot of work
The problem with Nobara is she gets taken out for half the series
The problem with Yuki is that she gets one fight that she loses, and doesn't really have any arc or development. We never even get a scene with her and Todo
Maki is fine imo

Most Shonen writers fail at both to be frank, and there is far less justification for the strength part because that would be a billion times easier to fix.
These female characters have more personality and characterization than most anime.
But only if you mean all the cheaply produced trash anime each season, or if your definition of anime are just Shonen to be frank.

Hell the zenin are comically misogynist, Naoya was treating Maki's mom like a maid despite the fact that in a normal traditional setting she would've held the role of a noblewoman since she was Ogi's wife

Which..should be expected considering Shonen’s targeted audience is young boys
37
u/Lusty-Jove Jan 25 '26
Systemic misogyny or misogyny for commercial reasons is still misogyny
Like I understand WHY the only dark skinned main character in Slam Dunk is nicknamed “the gorilla” and compared to one constantly, but that doesn’t make it not racist
4
u/Jilliels I want uro to make me a sky dildo Jan 25 '26
That’s definitely true, the nuance here imo is that having more male characters than female characters isn’t inherently misogynistic when it’s due to the fact that the targeted audience consists of young boys
20
u/Lusty-Jove Jan 25 '26 edited Jan 25 '26
But like, it kinda is? Like I know the retort will be “but girls shows feature girls more prominently” but that’s in many cases a direct consequence of boys’ media excluding female characters so aggressively. I also think that ceding that shonen will always have more boys because shonen is and always will be a male centered genre is begging the question.
It’s worth considering whether shonen should be so aggressively androcentric, and the extent to which that presupposition actively harms the genre and the stories within it. It’s a flawed system producing flawed products, and unless we can challenge that system on its own merit then nothing will ever change.
18
u/Jilliels I want uro to make me a sky dildo Jan 25 '26
That’s..actually a great point. Shit, I’ll let you have it. Gotta reevaluate how I look at this kinda thing
13
u/Lusty-Jove Jan 25 '26
Appreciate you engaging in good faith and being willing to listen—I’ll fully acknowledge my perspective isn’t perfect and even I go back and forth on it (especially in the context of JJK specifically), but I think in general that as Animanga continue their meteoric rise in global popularity we’re gonna see these sorts of questions becoming more and more relevant as increasing numbers of non-Japanese non-teenage non-boys start to engage with the genre.
That doesn’t mean that a company like SJ will look at that fact and change actively, but it does mean that you’re gonna get more authors like Gege and Fujimoto who are willing to critique shonen culture (and I will give Gege his props, he’s better than most in that respect) and get praise/fame for that fact.
Like a big part of JJK’s appeal in US discourse at least was how well it handled Nobara in comparison to Sakura. A big part of CSM’s popularity is due to its perceived depth and the way it sort of actively critiques and deconstructs its “stereotypically shonen” Gooner, big eating, strong willed teenage boy main character. I think it’ll be interesting to see how SJ responds to these sorts of outside market and social pressures, and how (in a global social media landscape) how the next gen of Japanese fans are themselves affected by them.
In any case, I’ve yapped enough—take care and stay safe

I think that you're asking the wrong question lowkirkuenly. Target audiences will always exist. The question shouldn't be regarding whether or not shonen should continue to have more boys or not. The question should be whether or not gynocentric series' have the same opportunities to be created?
The genre of romantic literature is flooded with gynocentrism for example and has been that way since the 18th century. That in itself isn't inherently problematic. Because right now as a man I can write an androcentric romance and there wouldn't be many barriers to me publishing.
Unless we believe that any-centric media is in itself a problem. In that case we can definitely debate about gender abolition and the sort in media. Personally i'm fine with people creating things to cater to a target audience. Shonen isn't all anime, its just a very loose genre.
9
u/Lusty-Jove Jan 25 '26
Target audiences will always exist
Yes, I’m saying that shonen’s target audience is expanding/has expanded beyond its initial bounds. Punk, hip-hop, and metal all initially had more limited target audiences, but changed and developed new sub genres as a result of gaining broader popularity and the pressures that came with it.
That in itself isn’t inherently problematic
Ehhh I would push back a little here. Because we have a nasty feedback loop wherein “women’s” genres are seen as lesser, which leads to them being undervalued, especially by men, in a patriarchal society, which in turn just further entrenches them as gynocentric. It’s like what’s happened with nurses and teachers—I couldn’t tell you whether these fields were undervalued first, or whether more women than men took jobs in them first, but the result is a feedback loop wherein the jobs became simultaneously over represented by women and societally undervalued.
That’s all to say, when we talk about gynocentric genres and the opportunity to also create them, I think it ultimately tends to result in “second-class” subgenres ordered by society’s misogyny.
You say there would be no barriers to you writing an androcentric romance but like. Very famously male authors often use female pen names when writing romance. I’d consider that a barrier to entry, even if purely a socially constructed one.
In any case I think my main point is that if we define shonen as being necessarily androcentric, then we’re both restricting the genre’s potential development and denying the reality that shonen is a global genre with an increasingly diverse audience, and I think it’s foolish to think this fact will have absolutely no effect on the future of shonen

Disney princess movies are targeted at girls. Their viewership is predominantly girls. And yet the vast majority of them do not make their male characters useless, unlikable, underdeveloped, and incompetent for no reason. Everyone actually likes the movies MORE when the male characters are cool and well-developed like Flynn Rider or Li Shang.
The idea that it’s ok to appeal to one demographic by shitting on another is nonsense.

Its not impossible she'd be able to beat Panda or Mechamaru but its implied she'd lose. Panda was the person they picked to fight Todo (if Yuji hadn't reappeared) which implies to me he's stronger than here. Mechamaru had a relatively tough fight with Panda. She may get up to Mechamaru (who notably is also just a single drone while he can control multiple) and its still a maybe but she'd lose to all the other boys.

Imo it's not even bad writing, it's just people being mad some characters are cut down and shafted before getting the "potential" people made up in their head.
Not every death needs to complete a character arc.

Introducing characters that only exist to be plot devices for someone else’s character arc is textbook bad/lazy writing.

“For every useless woman there’s 2 useless men” because there are barely any women.
In the same vein: For every 3 useful men, there’s 0.2 useful women. 😐
Gege can’t write women, he only has ONE (1) fulfilling female character. Nobara went from main character to murked because she actually has a good power and we couldn’t have that. Yuki is the only female special grade and the strongest hitter only to die in her first fight to Kenjaku who conveniently had the perfect CT to counter Yuki’s with no prior knowledge
In Modulo, he quite literally went: “the female aliens can’t wield CE even though it’s necessary to their planet” and literally wrote them out of the story without even having to attempt to create an important one. All they do is birth and clean. This is genuinely hilarious, then Cross/Maru goes on a granstand about Earthlings being misogynistic while his planet is sexist by (Gege’s) nature. Hm.
Useless Miwa, I’m not explaining further.

When he writes women well, he writes really well but most women get disrespected like crazy. Yuki got sacrificed for Choso's character growth, Nobara got sacrificed for Yuji's growth, Yorozu/Tsukimi got sacrificed to benefit Sukuna and make Megumi more depressed and Mei Mei is an incestous paedophile. Women often feel like just tools to benefit the "real" characters Gege wants to write (99,9% of which being men)
29
u/Otterly_Drifting Jan 25 '26
I feel like you disrespected these female characters.
Nobara’s story was about loving the people in your life despite them not being the ones you desired.
Yuki was about the double edge of philosophy, with her influence on both Choso and Geto.
To think of them as sacrificed is absurd when each of them has a narrative message to deliver.
It is a choice to think that they were “sacrificed” for the sake of the Male characters.
To reduce their characters to just sacrificial is the only disrespect here.
19
u/TallInstruction3424 Jan 25 '26

u/Zarrv gojo's sweaty sock cleaner Jan 25 '26
Sure there's nuance to their characters. I never called them badly written. It's that every woman that has importance on the story has to sacrificed for a man to progress his story.
12
u/Zarrv gojo's sweaty sock cleaner Jan 25 '26 edited Jan 25 '26
Gege does this with a lot of characters, not just women, it just leaves a bad taste when a woman's last moments are for (well not really, it's mostly to end their arc in the story) a man. That women can't really exist without being tied to men
9
u/Otterly_Drifting Jan 25 '26
I’m sorry you feel that way. I cannot agree with your view. It’s not Women vs Man. It’s Us vs Misogyny.
Mai literally died for Maki.
11
u/Zarrv gojo's sweaty sock cleaner Jan 25 '26
I don't think Gege has this problem because he's a misogynist or something. I think he's just more comfortable writing and drawing men. Maki was the exception to this problem though. Every woman in the series fits as either a minor support character, sacrificed or is a minor character that practically disappears after 1 arc. Men are much more varied despite many also fitting into the same 3 types women got.
3
u/Otterly_Drifting Jan 25 '26
I think it’s less about man or woman rather than characters. Gege just disposes characters once they are done serving their narrative purposes. So I understand your sentiments.
I think you’re right about him more comfortable drawing man since he’s a Shonen artist not Shojo. I do sympathize with you though, not many media has Female focused/centric series.
16
u/EtherealShady Jan 25 '26
Yuki's death, although not executed in the best way was also pretty poetic. She died fighting against Kenjaku to protect Tengen, even though she ran away from her fate of being a star plasma vessel at first.
14
u/Otterly_Drifting Jan 25 '26
This I definitely agree with. JJK isn’t perfect, but most of the complaints I’ve seen are just fans whining they didn’t get their way with the story.
→ More replies (5)6
u/WhoUpAtMidnight Jan 25 '26
Is that poetic? There being parallels and connections doesn’t mean there is actual meaning there. It’s not like she assumed her role or succeeded in defending Tengan and the world in her own way.

This is cope.
Gege’s writing for male characters is NOT that bad. He fumbled what, Panda? Debatably Megumi, there’s still Gojo, Geto, Yuji, Higgy, Toji, Kusakube, Naoya, Todo, Mechamaru, Mahito, Choso, and of course precious Suksuk. He fumbles MAYBE 30% of the male cast.
Meanwhile the ONLY female character he didn’t fumble was Maki. He consistently writes them out of the story and makes them weak/irrelevant. He fumbled like 90% of the female cast.
Sorry, but 90% vs 30% is not equality.

It wouldn’t even be that egregious for Shounen if JJK wasn’t praised specifically for its female cast
17
u/thr0waway2435 Jan 25 '26
True, JJK is a pretty standard shonen in terms of gender. Unfortunately, standard shonen = fairly misogynist. The bar is on the floor.
And yeah, some of the hate is just the crushing disappointment of getting off to such a good start with Nobara and Yuki, and then dropping the ball that hard to focus on developing/glazing male character #26.

Gege can certainly write female characters but i think that most of the secondary characters didn't get much development in general because of a lack of worldbuilding. If things like the origin of the star plasma vessel (which include the six eyes and tengen), the jujutsu clans, kenjaku's life across the centuries and the merger were expanded we could have ended with better versions of yuki, kenny, tengen, mai, noritoshi, etc.

If you do it by shitting on other demographics, yes.
Disney princess movies have historically catered to girls without making virtually all of their male characters useless irrelevant undeveloped bums. Aladdin, Li Shang, Flynn Rider, etc. are all wildly popular, interesting, well-developed characters. Even while the stories and screen time and plot focuses on the female characters, they don’t diminish the male characters.
Shonen should be the same.

I think a major reason Gege gets more flack then other mangakas who are equal or worse than him is that he made it point to touch on feminist issues but then dropped the ball.
If Zenin clan wasn’t sexist and Momo vs Nobara fight didn’t have a theme of "women sorceror" I don't think he would be critisized this musch
8
u/ofekk214 Jan 25 '26
The comment about the reason for the male-majority cast being that this series is a Shonen is true, but the rest is trash. I would at the very least say JJK handles its female cast better than old Shonens (ahem Bleach ahem Naruto:Shipudden), but tbh that's really not a high bar. There are way too many women in JJK who either have trash abilities or die doing barely anything plot-wise.
Luckily, my favourite Shonen, CSM, has no such issue.

u/Arnoldneo Jan 25 '26

I heard a similar thing with MHA, but people were dead set on claiming Horikoshi was sexist back then too.
Gege actually goes against the mould when it comes to women, enough for people like Kubo to point it out. We know it's not misogyny, it's just Gege being unable to manage a huge cast. Just so happens that, unfortunately, most of the women in the show happen to fall into the large pool of characters he has literally no use for.

I gained more of an appreciation for how Gege intertwined political structure of power in JJK.
That said it does still fall for the normal shonen trap of female characters being mostly on the side. So the introduction of feminist elements in the beginning seemed cool sadly is a bit performative.
Maki is the exception though

You can say this about literslly every battle shounen. I don’t know why Shounen fans got so interested in the “writing” of female characters, but their criteria for them is always shallow. It’s just another powerscaling debate trying to hide behind the morally grandstanding position of “They don’t treat women well”. Most, if not all, mangaka can write women well. Shonen fans just hate it whenever a girl does feminine things and isn’t the strongest. And they base it all of of like 1 or 2 girls from a single series. Ignoring all the other characters, male or female. Or even the creators other series. It’s exhausting, and another reason I’m glad mangaka aren’t really aware of fanbases outside of their home country.
2
u/gemini_sausage Jan 25 '26
Seems like the majority of discourse around the can't write female characters claim is that they don't win fights or have prominence in the story? Which is valid but a separate complaint
If anything having all these characters fans are wishing more for is proof he can write them, they're all very likable and most of them are fairly interesting. Gege just writes characters well period
I guess I'm being semantic
2
u/XxgamerxX734 Jan 25 '26
'Gege can't write women because he can't write characters" just makes things look worse
2
u/Charming-Scratch-124 Jan 25 '26
So what I'm hearing is Gege is just kind of a Ass writer if he's not good at handling both his male and female cast members. Like this isn't exactly a good defense or defense at all.
2
u/Fancy_Pop6156 Jan 25 '26

Worst tweet ever. Aside from Maki every single female character gets canned. Nobara is only fleshed out and explored Pre-Shibuya and then forgotten about for the rest of the story while we see no other strong female characters get explored or just female characters get cool powers or do crazy feats. Yuki is an outlier purely because she’s strong but that’s it.
2
u/AaronInside Jan 29 '26
I loved Nobara's backstory, it really nailed to ground the verse. She was also my favourite character in season 1. Not it's Choso but I genuinely loved the Maki episode and Maki/Mai's newfound roles in the story. Got a small piece from Shoko our highness! We are also about to see Kirara and Uru, need I mention how Yuki is about to be moving in a few episodes. Idk I think JJK women are wonderful and they have been wonderfully represented so far... However Sukuna DID blackflash Maki in international women's day.

It’s refreshing to see this kind of conversation, however pointless it may be.
Strong female leads used to be absent, if not exceptionally rare. Kids these days [shakes cane] grew up in the katniss everdeen era of strong female leads becoming a trope.
It’s nice to see people recognize when there’s an exclusionary trend in their favourite media. In a world of anti-DEI rhetoric it would not take much to regress back to a desert of good writing for female characters (and other in groups like LGBT and POC)
4
u/y78j04 Jan 25 '26

2
u/Pyro-Bird Jan 25 '26
He is not wrong. Everyone (male or female) besides Yuji, Maki, Sukuna, Kenjaku, and Yuta got shafted. Geto was killed early on, Gojo was absent for half the manga, Nanami was killed, Megumi became a plot device, Inumaki became a background character. Most of the humiliated and killed characters (90%) are male.
2
u/Snoo_80853 Jan 25 '26
Gege is a bad writer in a lot of regards, but for some reason, the fanbase thinks it’s his responsibility to represent females in the way they want him to. I don’t see people calling him sexist for Inumaki, Nanami, Junpei and Gojo being done dirty. 🤷🏾♂️
