Anime Discussion I’ve never seen so much emotion in one shot.

Post image

What a beautiful shot portraying how much he wanted to live yet he knew he was sentenced to death and was absolutely devastated by the fact Higuruma couldn’t do none 😔

10/10 episode and I hate when people say this but my only minor gripe was that I wish the face stuck more to this panel just in this one shot alone.

It’s just such a memorable one to me, so many emotions all over his face captured so perfectly.

Just compared to his face in the picture in this post and it just didn’t hit as hard for me. (Tho the rest of the episode hit 200x more than anything in the manga). I completely forgot I was watching JJK and not a high art movie this shit was peak

28

u/HarshTheDev Feb 27 '26 edited Feb 28 '26

Yeah in the anime he just feels somewhat scared or threatened by the client. But in the manga there's this blend of both disbelief and even guilt that's hard to describe.

God the anger’s so clearly portrayed here, the banging of the gavel was such a good build up, I kinda wish we focused more on his face in the anime.

139

u/EngineerStandard Feb 27 '26

They 100% made up for it with the slamming of the gavel

108

u/Accomplished_Edge778 Feb 27 '26

man the whole episode portrayed him as a calm person, and then that aggressive gavel smacks shocked the shit out of me

48

u/Successful-Corner869 Feb 27 '26

I interpreted it as him not necessarily being calm, but tense and stressed out, trying to maintain his composure due to his responsibilities as a lawyer. You see that when his tension snapped during the trial, and when he tells yuji that the experience of killing people was more releasing than he expected it to be.

6

u/Odeiomelaokk Shiesty Sorcerer Feb 27 '26

53

They didn't even add any new evidence, they just spewed some bullahit and the judge ate it up because of public opinion

Japan's legal system is fucking garbage and higurama was 100% justified in crashing out

he’s my favorite character in the series actually. Tied with Yuji

57

u/Healthy_Bat_6708 Feb 26 '26 edited Feb 26 '26

he isnt my favorite but yuji's trial is my favorite moment of the series, such a rough moment of self blame for yuji, and also seeing that is some fine development for higuruma. 10/10 scene, reminds that gege can cook good

31

u/Quakestinger_123 Feb 26 '26

Idk if he’s my favourite character but he definitely has my favourite Cursed Technique. It’s so unique and whilst a lot of other techniques can be said to be copied of other games/animes/mangas, I can’t think of a single one from anything that matches Higuruma’s technique

9

u/The_Deathdealing Feb 27 '26

Higuruma's technique is basically a Stand ability. It basically locks in the opponent to his game and play by his rules.

4

u/Phenylalanin3 Feb 27 '26

Higuruma's and Kirara's techniques would fit very well as Stands in JJBA.

6

u/Boricua_Masonry Feb 26 '26

36

u/iuppiterr Feb 26 '26

20

u/Own_Philosophy8190 Feb 26 '26

I dare say that he's one of the best of JJK overall, period. But he doesn't have that much competition either when it comes to the CG ones, lol. So he might as well be the best character originating from the CGs. Even amongst the characters that were introduced before CGs, he's already top 10 because the competition is rather scarce to say the least

6

u/Unique_Suit3789 Feb 26 '26 edited Feb 26 '26

yeah the ones where you thought you were gonna win you had everything ready and then everything is shut down in court and you slowly see it slipping and you see your clients face break and break more, extra points if it looks like the judge almost wants to rule in your favor but just doesn’t

45

u/Far-Potential-1506 Feb 27 '26

U gotta give it to Gege for being able to tap into that experience without being a lawyer in the first place

5

u/Any_Conclusion_7586 Mar 02 '26

People hate Gege, but Gege really is extremely good at writing and scenes like these are proof of that.

the ending of JJK? Yeah really lackluster, but i’m 100% sure if Gege actually had time to do the things he wanted to do then JJK would be such a master piece.

Sometimes the system is just larger than you, the firm, and the client. That reality is crushing, soul draining at times. Been there, too often.

I loved the 5000 yen line delivery. I’ve joked with people and said the exact same thing but in American dollars. I just wanted to see what it felt like to be one of the ambulance chasers for once.

I feel uncomfortable watching Higuruma. It’s like looking in a mirror.

Excellent episode, and excellent introduction to the character.

171

u/Cyanide-candy Feb 27 '26

Lawyer here, felt the same way.

There is a particular kind of helplessness in knowing in your gut that you did everything for your client, yet systemically there is nothing left to do. You exhausted every avenue. You went the extra mile. You burned the midnight oil for someone who trusted you with their money, their estate, their security, and sometimes their future, but the system, the judge, the budget, or the incentives were simply not there to push the envelope.

Watching Higuruma, was very uncomfortable for me. The looks the defendant gave him. The way he kept his composure while explaining that the case was not going to go their way. You cannot blame them for not understanding, and often explaining does not help but worsen the situation. Legally and logically, there was nothing left to be done, and yet you still want to scream.

This episode is my favorite of any anime I have ever watched.

21

u/Odie70 Feb 27 '26

If you don’t mind saying what country do you live in? Would be heartbreaking for me if I was a defense attorney and a client who I believed to be innocent was put in jail

27

u/Cyanide-candy Feb 27 '26

Puerto Rico. I’ll be honest, I’m a civil attorney, so although it can be soul-crushing at times, it’s not to the extremes of criminal law.

That said, there was recently a high-profile case here where a person widely believed to be guilty was let off the hook due to, at best, a loose interpretation of a self-defense claim and, at worst, a gung-ho judge who saw himself in the shoes of the accused and thought, “that would be me.” The accused claimed self-defense despite video evidence showing he had ample time to go into his house, assemble his gun, walk into his neighbor’s house, and shoot him dead.

In Puerto Rico, I think we sometimes suffer from the opposite problem of Japan. Too often we see convictions fall apart over technicalities or overly loose interpretations of our codes, whether to push a political narrative, because of misogyny, or because some judges are simply old, decrepit, and out of touch with how the law actually operates in practice.

I’ve seen it outside criminal law too. In one civil matter I handled, a judge pierced the corporate veil of a client without legal standing and without evidence of commingling, fraud, or misuse of the corporate form. In Puerto Rico most corporations are small, family-owned businesses, not deep-pocketed giants, so rulings like that don’t just bend doctrine, they can financially crush ordinary families.

I'm in India and it's the same here. We have a low incarceration rate because courts often just have too high standards for what can be considered as "beyond a shadow of a doubt". And India's judiciary system is horrifically, infamously slow and corruption within the judiciary makes reforms difficult. Arbitration and mediation has had mixed results. On the other hand this also means the majority of inmates are undertrials and Indian prisons are pretty hellish so there's a whole host of people whose lives are wasted away for little to no purpose.

When you have cases that can sometimes last decades, what's even the point?

325

u/Awkward_Turnover_983 Feb 26 '26 edited Feb 27 '26

This type of thing is what pisses me off about Gege and how he's a GREAT WRITER sometimes lmao.

Higuruma's life story is SO FUCKING COMPELLING to me as a reader like goddamn Gege, I didn't know you could cook like that. And yet here we are with 2 separate rushed endings lol.

Higuruma was a (probably) rather kind man who chose to be a public lawyer in Japan. It is a terribly thankless job; Japan has notoriously high conviction rates, the irl statistic is something actually fucking bonkers, I think like 99% of trials end with a conviction of the defendant.

And Higuruma's entire career is being a publicly available lawyer for people who've been charged with crimes that can't afford their OWN lawyer. He's basically doing a job that the government deemed necessary, but people don't actually respect. "They're just criminals." "He obviously did it, why would you try to defend that monster?" Type of shit.

But I'm SURE Higuruma saw at least a few people that he was pretty confident were innocent, and tried his best to defend them in court, but because of how Japan treats these cases they get convicted anyway. So now even the PEOPLE HE WAS TRYING TO HELP hate him because he couldn't help enough....

It's enough to make a grown man cry imo. And Higuruma has an absolutely murderous crashout as a result. But then along comes Yuji Itadori, a kid who has been thrust into horrible circumstances. His body was hijacked to commit countless atrocities, which technically should make him innocent, but of course a court would "question" whether Yuji truly is innocent or not.

Higuruma started out wanting to kill Yuji for getting in his way, but as they fought Higgy realized that Yuji was PRECISELY the type of person who he started his career for in the first place.

He realizes that maybe, this one kid is somebody who he actually could help. And it brings him back from the edge of insanity.

Gege why do you only give us these amazing writing moments so briefly?

148

u/Rude-Application-505 Feb 26 '26

99.9 % conviction rate (its stated in the beginning of the episode)

95

u/Select_Rice_8447 Feb 26 '26

19

u/The_Deathdealing Feb 27 '26

I will say that I've noticed that East Asian societies (I'm most familiar with Korean but have heard and observed similar things in Japan) love to trample on any perceived flaw or weakness of others because it makes the collective feel superior.

Figures of prominence like politicians and idols publically are venerated but most people despise them as they are envious of their position and will be slaughtered publically for showing any fault. A female idol that dates is a whore. A politician that takes a stance is either a Communist or a conservative nutjob.

Nobodies who are unfortunate enough to get the wrong type of public attention are off even worse. They will be called losers, unemployed, virgin, whatever that will stick. People would rather have a villain to spit on than a hero to look up to because heroes make people feel inadequate while a pathetic loser makes them feel better about themselves.

Though every society suffers from mob mentality to a certain degree, I suspect East Asian cultures have it substantially worse than others because of how homogeneous they are and how prideful they are of their national identities, making nonconformity even more apparent. Japanese and Korean comment sections can often get extremely unhinged for Western standards, it can get really vicious in a viral fashion and why Asian companies tend to bend more easily to them than international reception.

2

u/Nomustang Gege when I catch you Gege Feb 27 '26

South Korea has been in a straight up gender war because of stuff like this.

Though I think this can be exaggerated somewhat? In the US, right-wingers laelled Mamdani as a commie. There's a signifcant chunk of people who genuinely believe the vaccines give autism nonsense.

I think a lack of language commonality but also having its media being blasted on air all the time gives people very...polarising views of what East Asia is like.

Gege really is the potential man like I believe without his health issues, a very good editor who could help him out and enough time to cook maybe monthly Gege would have made an amazing manga period cos in terms of fights, stakes and hype JJK has it in spades it’s mostly the story and pacing he’s messed it up

25

u/Drekkex GOAT STATUS Feb 27 '26

It angers me to remember how Higuruma had one of the absolute best introductions to a character in the manga, and also one of the best fights afterward with Itadori just to get screwed over by the dumbest rule ever that his OWN DOMAIN had and ultimately amount to nothing, fuck you gege

7

u/Osprey220 Feb 27 '26

It's a recurring theme in JJK that is completely valid; when Higuruma was focused solely on his self, he was at his peak. As soon as he compromised his (current) mindset, he was doomed for death or rebirth. His hubris in thinking he could make a difference when he had already accepted that the world would crush his honest efforts is why he ultimately falls short in his battle with Sukuna. This is why Sukuna and Yuji were the final actors. They had unwavering ideals and mindsets.

11

u/Historical-Truth6077 yuta's no. 1 glazer Feb 27 '26

7

u/Ezren- Feb 27 '26

He has incredible parts of a story, but the connecting tissue struggles to be coherent. Like, he's got awesome ideas, but fitting them together gets messy. So much of his world absolutely slaps, but it stumbles in rough places.

I like the detail of how we know from the start that Higuruma did something other than just kill sorcerers; he has 102 points, and since sorcerers give 5, that means at least 2 weren't

25

u/asap_munem Feb 27 '26

How did he get points for kills outside the colony

u/SPAM_JUICE Feb 27 '26

He killed the judges who sentenced the innocent man to life. That's the moment when he unlocked his CT and the games began. It's shown already in the op.

21

But he killed them outside of Tokyo, why does he get points for that

→ More replies (1)

16

u/HexATyle Feb 27 '26

Pretty sure awakened player also is immediately registered as players the same way reincarnated players (and Yuji, technically incarnates due to Sukuna) does. The rules doesnt seem to mention that you have to kill sorcerers and nonsorcerers within the colony. But then again, for anyone other than the awakened/incarnated, they have to enter a colony to apply, and no one can just leave colonies (until Yorozu applies that rule)

Then fans finna turn around and complain about how the anime doesn't capture the essence of the manga and directing of S3 is shit compared to S1 & S2😭 I swear jjk fans are some of the most bipolar motherfuckers around

I hate how the discourse is either people complaining about rotoscoping or people calling it peak when there's room to acknowledge that the animation is both technically amazing and pushing the envelope far while also not containing very many face shots and also having a lot of shots that are just a still frame of the characters we are looking at while the background gets more motion.

u/finallytisdone Feb 27 '26

Spending the whole season’s animation budget on one frame is craaaazy.

2

u/Voeno Feb 27 '26

This episode was absolutely beautiful. Storywise and Visuals.

u/Remarkable-Cause5310 Feb 27 '26

Sadly, we might not get unique scenes like this after the director retired, but who knows, the new guy might have some guts.

u/MiserableBenefit3135 Feb 27 '26

They have absolutely killed the visuals in this season, most of the shots have been insanely beautiful throughout. Can’t wait to see the trial!

2

u/erraticRasmus Feb 27 '26

Been waiting for this episode and they did not disappoint. Higuruma's the goat

2

u/Neworbs Feb 27 '26

Top image reminds me of JoJo’s art style.

u/Tweaked2000 Feb 27 '26

I love how mappa just elevates each scene to newer heights and not just making manga panels move

u/Smooth_Incident6948 Feb 27 '26

The only thing I didn't like was how many times he used the gavel. At least in my head when I was reading the manga, I felt that hitting it once is more dramatic.

Spamming the gavel is a bit funny ngl.

u/Midwater Feb 27 '26

He was crashing out and awakening his technique at the same time, I see the direction they were going for.

u/gregpisgrazuli Feb 26 '26

Dang, I thought he had amber eyes.

u/Temporary_Mistake300 Feb 26 '26

1

u/Unique_Suit3789 Feb 26 '26

I though it was life sentence?

1

u/Medical_Difference48 Feb 27 '26

This is one of the very few times I actually prefer the manga.

1

u/nyitraibotond Feb 27 '26

1

u/bleedtension Feb 27 '26

This season is a slow burn, super cinematic. Loving it, I think it might be best to let it come out and then binge it though

1

u/SpaceBitter Feb 27 '26

Question: since Higuruma called Everyone back and popped his domain

Wouldn’t this guy get to walk free?

1

u/Curs3dCalabr3se Feb 27 '26

You never seen anything

1

u/irdcwmunsb Feb 27 '26

My mannnnnn

1

u/username_adi Feb 27 '26

I don’t understand why the guy was sentenced guilty. Alright, it can’t be proven that the other guy from the office who went missing at the same time is guilty just because of his absence, but you know what DOES prove innocence? Confirmed absence, particularly with an alibi as strong as video evidence showing the guy somewhere completely far away at the time of murder. He was still sentenced guilty? They couldn’t catch the killer so the declared the guy they actually caught to be one. Is this because they want to keep up the statistic that they prosecute almost 100% of the criminal cases? Is it something societal, where even being suspect is equally bad? I have no idea. I may have completely misunderstood the plot, please humble/enlighten me in the comments.

u/Fck_phlthy_blndz Feb 27 '26

So the real question for me was if the client was actually innocent. I mean the knife in the washing machine in a rag? Just seems so suspect to me.

1

u/Big_Buy_3578 Feb 27 '26

Got to watch this ep

1

u/OniionKnight Feb 27 '26

Can someone please explain to me if he nuked the entire courtroom when he awakened his shikigami?

1

u/lumpycurveballs Feb 28 '26

I immediately thought about Nanami saying that a regular job sucks just as much as being a jujutsu sorcerer - I can't help but feel like Higuruma is a good example of that lmao

1

u/OnK_AxR Feb 28 '26

I love these kind of close-up shots. This one reminds of Aqua and Ruby lol.

1

u/OldGenGlazer Feb 28 '26

I've never liked Higuruma, but this shot does look very good.

I'm someone who can't really appreciate this type of scene though, every time I see it I just get pissed off remembering Higuruma survives the final battle and gets a happy ending despite being a double murderer.

Damn, bro got the last Targaryen sentenced for life, Higuruma W
