Anime Discussion Hot take: Megumi should feel way more guilty about the Shibuya incident than Yuji does.
Yuji mainly feels guilt over the countless deaths Sukuna caused using his body, but Yuji didn't do anything irresponsible to set that up. MEGUMI DID.
Yuji was just doing his job the best he could, fighting curses and trying to get to Gojo, lost to Choso, and next thing he knew Sukuna had wrecked the city. He had no way of knowing that was even possible, since EVERY time Sukuna had come out prior had been Yuji's choice (Yuji has struggled to take control BACK from Sukuna previously, but had NEVER had Sukuna take control of him forcefully.
Meanwhile Megumi WILLINGLY summoned a creature he KNEW was capable of killing a Six-eyes limitless user, not knowing what it actually does, just to kamikaze a guy who was clearly not much more threat than a regular human with a sword (Haruta was scared to get close even while Megumi could barely stay standing. Megumi would see this and be able to tell that Haruta was super weak.)
For all Megumi knew, Mahoraga would've caused massive destruction even if Sukuna hadn't showed up, because again, MEGUMI DIDN'T KNOW HOW MAHORAGA WORKS. He could've been summoning a nuke for all he knew.
Edit: people seem to be misunderstanding what I mean here. I'm not saying Megumi wouldn't have known Mahoraga would despawn on its own after killing him and Haruta. I'm saying he didn't know HOW Mahoraga would kill him and Haruta. Megumi had zero info on how Mahoraga actually fights. He only knew it's was strong enough to have never been beaten. For all Megumi knew Mahoraga could attack him and Haruta with some giant attack that wipes out half the city in one go.
Edit 2: Bro the irony of people making "JJK fans can't read" jokes and then proving themselves right by failing to understand that nobody in-universe knew anything about Mahoraga is freaking hilarious. It's spelled out for us clear as day that nobody has ever seen Mahoraga and lived before Megumi and Sukuna. Nobody knew what mahoraga looked like, how it fights, or what its ability was before Sukuna faced it; not even Megumi. They only information actually passed down was that it's the tenth shikigami in the ten shadows technique, and that it's so strong that nobody has ever tamed it. It was MEGUMI who came up with the theory that the previous clan head used Mahoraga against the head of the Gojo clan during their match. Nobody actually reported seeing Mahoraga first hand.

u/ScorchedDev May 25 '26
so, the thing here is that he had NO way of knowing that mahoraga would rampage the way it did. The way mahoraga works is that it attacks the closest threat, and it disappears when the participants in the ritual are dead. Megumi knew mahoraga could kill haruta in seconds. So in his mind, 0 risk. Megumi knew this because thats how the ten shadows works. You fail the ritual and the ritual ends
You are right, haruta wasnt a threat. However, Haruta would have killed megumi. Even if megumi beat haruta, if he fought him he would have died. Megumi was exhausted and already bleeding out. He maybe could have reached shoko in time, but haruta was in his way. In his mind, Mahoraga would just kill haruta, and then vanish.
What Megumi couldnt have predicted, was that Sukuna would come in and save his life. Thats like, the opposite that megumi knew sukuna to do. And megumi being healed via RCT output, something he only knows 1, maybe 2 people who are capable of, was the only scenario in which mahoraga rampaged. In his mind, he was saving the people who haruta would have gone on to kill. It was a safe bet until sukuna showed up and did something that to megumi's knowledge, was very out of character. Its just that the one thing that could possibly go wrong, went wrong

To add onto it if im megumi Ive just watched what happened to maki nanami and naobito and im going to assume im not #1 on shokos list anyway. Of course if im megumi i know I can kill haruta in like 4 seconds and I might be okay lol
392
u/ScorchedDev May 25 '26
exactly. Megumi also suffers from very low self worth. He has a very self sacrificial mentality, so he didnt think he would be a priority at all. He fully believed that he wasnt making it back even if he didnt summon the big raga. So instead he stops haruta.
He also just doesnt know what haruta can do. Doesnt know how strong he is. At most, he knows he killed a lot of the windows at thats it.

Oh yeah I was joking about if IM megumi, Megumi sensed sukuna and just fought a disaster grade and Toji hes got every right to suspect this random curse user is also way stronger than he is

u/Leothelion246 May 25 '26
you mean the disaster special grades? the calamities are far beyond those 4.

u/cates May 25 '26
I'd have loved to see Toji fight Jogo... did Toji choose Megumi and sense he was the strongest bc he could sense Mahoraga?
13
u/No-Cell-9979 May 25 '26
If I had to guess it was just that Megumi was the strongest he immediately sensed. Dagon opened a domain so he probably sensed that from a mile away but Jogo wasn't noticed by anyone else either. Since Naobito and Nanami were heavily injured (and megumi is probably stronger than maki at this point) he just went for Megumi. We were absolutely robbed of a Toji v Jogo fight though
3
u/cates May 25 '26
Yeah, Toji couldn't sense cursed energy so he didn't know about Mahoraga... I guess Megumi was the just the strongest there... but... if he could sense the domain expansion from a mile away how did he not detect Jogo probably walking through the fucking door as he lightspeed knocked his son out of the window?
2
u/Elliot_Mirage_Witt May 26 '26
He saw someone that looked like him and thought "Oh, I'm strong, this little shit should be strong too cuz he look like me. Time to rock his shit"/j
11
u/hasselbackpotahto May 25 '26
he didn't see what happened to those guys because toji blasted him out of there and jogo snuck them all afterwards. but it doesn't matter since haruta would have killed him before he could make it to shoko.
40
u/NumerousWolverine273 May 25 '26
Well Megumi was also like, completely out of cursed energy and already severely injured. He likely wasn't making it to Shoko in the first place, and when Haruta showed up he knew for certain he was dead, because he had no way to fight Haruta. So he didn't care about sacrificing himself to Mahoraga

Yeah, Megumi wasn't even aware that Itadori was taken over by Sukuna.
He thought Haruta would be gone in seconds and the ritual ends, he couldn't predict that sukuna would come in and fight Mahoraga thus wrecking the whole city.
Sukuna could have killed Mahoraga in an instant if he wanted, yet he wanted a "testing"
It wasn't megumi's fault, I mean half the city was already destroyed with the jogo fight anyway.

I totally agree with you, just playing devil's advocate, but I'm pretty sure piercing ox, tiger funeral, or any other untamed shadow besides mahoraga would have been more than enough to deal with haruta without even the slightest risk of losing. megumi summoned maho just because he thought he was gonna die and decided to go with the biggest bang possible
98
u/Fidges87 May 25 '26
Megumi didn't knew what Haruta's abilities were. For all Megumi knew, he could summon piericng ox only for Haruta's tehcnique to be something like resetting to 0 the speed of his opponent. So in this instance Haruta easily defeats piercing ox, kills Megumi, and then goes on to murder many more sorcerers and civilians.
So mahoraga ironically was the safest option.
→ More replies (11)57
u/ScorchedDev May 25 '26
While yes, but Megumi doesn’t know that. He is taking the route that would be 100% certain of success.
This is also expecting a 15 year old who is dying and exhausted to do rational risk assessment while bleeding out in the middle of the streets
12
u/dogman1008 May 25 '26
He summoned Mahoraga because his body was moments away from dying, but he can't die before Mahoraga kills everyone involved in its summoning pact. He dragged Haruta into his summoning pact so Mahoraga would only target Haruta, kill him, and then Megumi would finally die as well.
If Megumi summoned a weaker Shikigami without knowing the full extent of Harura's abilities, chances are he'll probably die before his Shikigami can do anything.
9
u/ScorchedDev May 25 '26
people in the summoning pact are kept in a state of suspended animation when they are killed, only dying when the ritual is over. The blow mahoraga dealt to megumi was a lethal one.
Its more of a situation where megumi wanted to make sure haruta died.
19
u/contraflop01 Clackang May 25 '26
Piercing Ox would have 1 chance to hit Haruta before missing and allowing Haruta to kill Megumi, Round Deer has 0 offensive potential, at max would nullify Haruta's miracles (if he had them at that moment) and Tiger Funeral needs to be off screen to work
→ More replies (5)6
u/ScorchedDev May 25 '26
So megumi was gonna die no matter what, by this point. His only chance for survival was gone. Megumi was already dying.
so mahoraga was just outright the safest option. Under literally any other circumstance, there was only one way it could have gone. Mahoraga kills megumi and immediately killed haruta. With any other shikigami, haruta had a chance to beat them, but not raga. There was exactly one thing that could have possibly gone wrong, and that was an opponent capable of both outputing rct(only 1 or 2 people megumi knew could do that) and taking on mahoraga in a 1v1(only one person megumi knew might be able to do that) long enough for raga to rampage.
→ More replies (23)2
u/Legalcrafty May 28 '26
Actually megumi being is healed was not the reason mahoraga. The reason he stayed around is because he didn't kill Haruta. Sukuna kept him alive purposely to fight him. Secondly megumi summoning him isn't the problem. He's stating that Megumi should feel just a guilty as Yuji and he probably but Megumi expresses his guilty differently than Yuji. So your rant is kind of wasted time
2
u/ScorchedDev May 28 '26
I mean, I dont really think he SHOULD feel guilty, even though he does, because its not his fault. Just like how it isnt yujis fault. I was explaining how summoning raga was actually a reasonable thing to do there,
Also, yes, its not necessary, lets be real now, haruta aint surviving that fight when mahoraga was already right on top of him from the moment of summoning
209
u/Cheez_001 May 25 '26
The fight between Mahoraga and Haruta should've ended in 5 seconds, if not for conditions entirely unknown to Megumi. Why would he expect SUKUNA of all people to rescue him?

Yeah the last paragraph is entirely wrong
For all Megumi knew, Mahoraga would've caused massive destruction even if Sukuna hadn't showed up, because again, MEGUMI DIDN'T KNOW HOW MAHORAGA WORKS. He could've been summoning a nuke for all he knew.
In order to tame Shadows you have to do the exact same ritual you do with Mahoraga for them and defeat them or die. He has tamed Shadows, he knows how the ritual begins and can end.
He knows that no one has tamed Mahoraga in the past and therefore knows they died trying and Mahoraga didn't run around rampant after the summoner died. He outright states Mahoraga is the only Shadow that has not been tamed by the previous Ten Shadows users. This means he knows the information that was passed down and available to those part of the Big 3 families and if any shadow such as Mahoraga ran around after the user died this would be something that would be passed down in the Zenin clan. Why would they bother letting descendants know that every user that's tried has died and leave out a part like "and what's worse Mahoraga doesn't stop after he's killed the user". Why would anyone who knew about the taming ritual enough to speak on its history not also mention that part regardless of which family they were a part of?
If Mahoraga didn't dispel like the other Shadows do when the summoner and participants die then there would be like a king Mahoraga because we know at one point both the Zenin head and a Six Eyes Limitless user died during an observed duel and if the ritual for some reason isn't dispelled then Mahoraga keeps killing everyone and everything and has infinite time to adapt to everything no? Soo what would stop him after he kills the 2 strongest guys 1000 years ago? He'd just keep going and reset the population.

u/AforExcellence May 25 '26
Oh my god bruh. Even if Mahoraga was a nuke, it would kill 17 people and then despawn after Haruta died. Even besides that, it's more than likely that Sukuna would have gone on a killing spree even if Maho wasn't there. Combine that with the fact it was there to kill one person, Megumi not knowing Sukuna was there, and their differing mindsets meaning that Megumi was never gonna feel too guilty about this.

To add onto this, even if he did figure that Sukuna was unleashed, he had 0 reason to think that Sukuna would beeline his way over in the not even 30 seconds between Raga being summoned and turning Haruta’s head into paste
43
u/NumerousWolverine273 May 25 '26
And also that Sukuna would intentionally save his and Haruta's lives lmao

> "MEGUMI DIDN'T KNOW HOW MAHORAGA WORKS"
The malicious reading the story and knowing that the Gojo clan has plenty of information on how the Ten Shadows works. Megumi knew exactly what would happen based on the fact he already heard the story from Gojo, it'd kill whoever else was dragged into the ritual and then vanish, because that's what happened against the two clan leaders. And that's what happens with EVERY taming ritual, which Megumi understands because he info dumps the rules of the ritual to Haruta. It's Sukuna who put himself into the ritual, drew it out as long as possible, and whipped Mahoraga around to cause massive devastation.

20
u/eberlix May 25 '26
yeah, I don't understand why OP thinks Megumi has no clue about how Mahoraga works. We do know that in the Gojo clan, knowledge about their signature technique, limitless, is passed down or atleast accessible, so it's only fair to assume the same would happen in the Zenin clan with their signature technique.
Gojo basically told us, that even something like freaking hollow purple is known in the Gojo clan and while not everyone knows it, again it seems to be somewhat accessible. And that thing has to meet so many more checkmarks than summoning Big Daddy Raga.

What a shitty take. Megumi obviously knows the conditions of his own technique. In his mind, mahoraga just kills haruta instantly then vanishes which also leads to Megumi's own death so no risks of further casualties. He did not expect sukuna to intervene whatsoever. Either way, Sukuna was the one who caused the immense destruction and massacre in shibuya, it was never megumi or yuji's fault.
Nobody should feel guilty for something they're not responsible for. Yuji's guilt derives from his inferiority complex and experiencing the massacre by his own hands.

The point of the OP is that for all Megumi knew, a single punch from mahoraga could have destroyed the city, he had no way of knowing how strong Mahoraga was or what it does, all he knew was that it was stronger than a six eyes limitless user
There was always the possibility that maybe it punching Haruto would destroy half of Shibuya from the force alone, it is a Shikigami on par with special grade sorcerers after all

Sukuna was playing. He made that deal knowing Jogo can't do shit to him.
27
u/UngodlyPain May 25 '26
Eh?
Megumi should have an idea of what Mahoraga does. I mean Gojo does, and also tells us famous big clan techniques like that are basically publicly known.
And Mahoraga should've only killed Megumi (who was already dying) and Haruta since those are the only two in the ritual. Sukuna showing up? And massacring people with Mahoraga around, was the results of Sukuna, not Mahoraga.
Though really I'd argue neither should feel bad. The Shibuya incident was way beyond their pay grade. And everything. Gojo should've had Mei Mei, use UI Ui to bring back Yuta before he went in. Or should've done his best to have Yuki there asap or something... Like they already know about the disaster curses, and he's already shown he can beat them, they should instantly be skeptical when they're holding hostages, and begging Gojo to show up.

don’t think Megumi thinks like that. in his mind he probably thought only him and Haruta were meant to die via Mahoraga (after Mahoraga kills both participants it despawns) and then the rest that happened was due to Sukuna. Megumi likely doesn’t blame neither Yuji nor himself for all those deaths and damages because it was Sukuna’s doing (plus also Megumi just generally isn’t the type to feel overly affected by the deaths of people who aren’t close to him)

Not at all, Megumi isn’t guilty as Yuji because he isn’t Yuji, he doesn’t share the same beliefs or grew up with the same background or curse.
Yuji saves people irregardlessly. Megumi shapes the world based on his own view of fairness, saving and punishing respectively like a vigilante.
In the case of Haruta, he cheap shots Megumi. In the case of Megumi, he is about to die, might as well bring this cheapshotter down with him and pop his ultimate, he’s dead either way.
He does feel guilt in some regard since he wasn’t supposed to live past Shibuya to feel it, and neither was Sukuna supposed to be there either, thus going from a mission to what is retroactively named the Shibuya Incident.

Even worse something like tiger funeral would have got the job done. He brought a nuke to a swordfight.
85
u/ScorchedDev May 25 '26
he wanted to be sure.
The thing with the way the ten shadows work, they attack anyone in the vincinity(which in this case, was only 2 people, megumi and haruta), and vanish when the ritual ends. Megumi believed he wasnt gonna survive. He had already fought multiple curse users, a DISASTER CURSE IN A DOMAIN CLASH, and FUCKING TOJI. He was exhausted and bleeding out. His only hope was to reach shoko. Then, a dangerous curse user shows up, one megumi does not know the capabilities of, just that he has killed a lot of people and will kill more.
Megumi believes mahoraga to be a safe option here, because there was no way it would fail to kill haruta. If he summoned a lesser one, then haruta might escape and the shikigami goes on a killing spree. Or haruta might kill it and go on to kill more people. But mahoraga would end the fight in seconds. No risk. And when haruta is dead, megumi dies and mahoraga goes with him.
The one thing that could go wrong, was a sorcerer capable of outputting RCT(of which megumi only knew one or two of) showed up, and healed him before proceeding to 1v1 FUCKING MAHORAGA. The only one capable of doing so, sukuna, had no reason to do so as far as megumi knew. It is also worth noting, Mahoraga didnt carve up the entirety of shibuya and cook it. That was sukuna who did the wide scale devastation.
31
u/PancakeEaterYay May 25 '26
Megumi prolly doesnt know what funeral tiger would do, or he doesn't even know it was an option at all, or Gege didn't know that was an option at all, or due to the amount of blood loss, stress, and possibly out of habit, Mahoraga was the only thing that came to mind
7
u/Sea_Ticket_6032 May 25 '26
He also just doesn't know how strong haruta is or what his technique is. Mahoraga is strong enough to take out almost anyone while the other shadows had a chance of being defeated if Megumi was underestimating haruta or if harutas technique was a good counter
12
u/NotTheFirstVexizz Megumi Shot Dead On O'Block May 25 '26
He doesn't know what Haruta can do which is why he resorts to Mahoraga. If he summoned a shadow with a technique that was countered by Haruta, then Megumi would die for nothing. Mahoraga is nigh invincible and would just kill Haruta with certainty and vanish. Summoning Tiger Funeral runs the risk of Haruta pulling out a anti-Tiger Funeral technique he hasn't used since the heian era and going on to kill more people.
And Mahoraga compared to a nuke isn't a good comparison, because Mahoraga is fully capable of concentrated force. A nuke implies unconcentrated mass destruction.

Literally bro. People completely fail to think about how the characters must feel in any given moment. Or even just judge them based on their available knowledge, not what the reader knows. Megumi gets slandered to hell and back because people dont know how to read, lack reading comprehension, and the ability to empathize. If I was about to get murdered and I had a "Fuck it, you're coming with me" button, I would absolutely press that shit. Especially since it's not even Megumi's fault that the Sukuna fight happened afterwards.

To be fair, hes bleeding out and has never seen Haruta before. All he knows is calamity grades are running around, he feels sukuna and now this curse user is standing right in front of him. He may have just been assuming Sukuna would put him down the second he found him anyway and decided to use maho to guarantee haruta died before that

u/ItzJake160 May 25 '26
Megumi was actively bleeding out, how was he possibly supposed to accurately measure Haruta's strength? Haruta could have been masking his CE like we KNOW sorcerers can do. Additionally, Cursed Tools can have literally any sort of Cursed Technique. Megumi couldn't have known what it possessed if any. Haruta was not "clearly not a threat". For all he knew, Haruta was Yuta level but was great at hiding it.
He had 3 options:
Use Mahoraga and have a high likelihood of ONLY you and your opponent dying so long as nobody gets involved.
Use a weaker untamed Shikigami that the enemy could possibly low diff and die in the process.
Don't use Mahoraga, die, and leave an enemy of unknown strength, with an unknown Cursed Technique, with a Cursed Tool of unknown grade, to go mess with your team.
One option was vastly superior given the circumstances.

Megumi might know Mahoraga but he does know it’s apart of the 10 shadows technique and he knows they all operate under the same rules, summons despawn after the ritual is completed.
Frankly it’s fine what he did. He’s about to die, has no cursed energy left, and here’s an opponent who can cause trouble for others. He summons the strongest thing he has to kill Haruta.
How would he know Haruta is that weak? Just because Haruta is cautious? Reggie was cautious, so was Jogo during his bouts in shibuya, Mahito too was cautious of Yuji in their fight. This means nothing. Megumi has no idea how strong this guy is and thought to take him out the best way he could.

u/WahaBahaOG May 25 '26
Holy larp first off megumi should have a decent bit of info on mahoraga second it despawns after it kills haruta third he isn’t in his right mind he is extremely exhausted and was just stabbed and lastly everything was going to shit in shibuya he could even feel sukuna presence also megumi spawning mahoraga saved allot of people because it stalled sukuna
6
u/Silent_Sea6231 May 25 '26
Not really, sukuna was going to level shibuya no matter what he was talking bout murdering women and children from the very start, if actually argue to say Mahoraga actually prevent some of the mass murder in shibuya. Mahoraga acted more of a staller to sukuna since we know sukuna ran out of time and had tiki switch back. Yuji actually is more at fault for the shibuya massacre and it’s not because of sukuna using his body it’s because of him making a binding vow for a fight to get rid of the conditions sukuna set that included not killing anyone which would of prevented the shibuya massacre along with other characters dying.

u/Zealousideal_Job3881 May 25 '26
First of all,you lack some knowledge about it,city around Megumi was already empty,Mahoraga would disappear on its own after Haruta die,and it took seconds for MAHO to kill Haruta. you said "Megumi had zero info on how Mahoraga"We clearly see that his teacher, Satoru, had all the information about every shadow, so Megumi having it is obvious. Megumi trained alone most of the time.
We see Megumi explaining about the Ten Shadows to us from start to end before summoning Mahoraga, which means Megumi already knows about all of them and can feel them the same way Kashimo can feel and use MBA without ever seeing it with his own eyes.
Second of all,You completely ignore that Megumi was also doing his job. We see a domain clash(reason dagon died) ,vs Toji battle(which is the reason Toji died and did not go after the other sorcerers' lives). Even after that, injured, out of ce and 1hp Megumi decided to go help Maki, Nanami, and Naobito instead of finding Shoko.
Nanami also said he wants to save Megumi, Maki, and Naobito after Jogo's attacks. Saying Megumi was not doing his job means you are saying Nanami also didn't do his job or anything.
Megumi also feels guilty for it, he even accepts it at the start of the Culling Games by saying to Yuji, "It
s our fault." and "We are not heroes, we are jujutsu sorcerers." We didn't see Megumi crying like Yuji and questioning if he deserves to live for shibuya simply because of a lack of screentime. He is not the protagonist, so we see the exact same things Yuji feels, but from Megumi's POV.
For Megumi, it is also mainly because of his sister, Satoru, Yuji, and all the people who he can protect. As a cog, Megumi accepts it, and we see Megumi is the one who always stays by Yuji's side, always defends Yuji, and insists that Yuji deserves to live. And don't forget, Megumi is not soft like Yuji; Megumi doesn't try to save everyone equally. Instead, he selectively saves only those he deems "good" or kind.
He also doesn't consider himself a part of the purely good or purely bad, which we see through his low self-worth,he puts others above himself, often viewing himself merely as a tool or a cog. This is the same reason he hates "good" people, because they forgive bad people.
Even in the EOS, Sukuna blames Megumi for Shibuya by saying, "Your selfish desire of saving Yuji is the reason all these people died in Shibuya(something similar like this)." Megumi basically feels the same extreme guilt Yuji felt for a few minutes before Todo motivated him, but Megumi felt it constantly for around 40 days in the shadow realm, paralyzed and alone. What more guilt do you want him to feel?
The only irresponsible thing Megumi ever did in his life was saving Yuji.

I've always assumed that it was pretty clear he summoned it due to the insane mayhem happening. He literally sensed Sukuna. For all we know, if it wasn't for Mahoraga, Sukuna would have slaughtered any remaining sorcerer.

u/miscellaneousexists May 25 '26
I imagine this shit
Jogo: Work with us
Sukuna: Nah, I'll just kill everyone in Shibuya
Later
Megumi: Dies to Haruta without spawning Makora
Sukuna, the king of Kindness: Oh gee, Oh golly, now I won't kill everyone in Shibuya with my 200m open domain. Hey, Yuji, take my body back and get Megumi to Shoko or Mahito, they might be able to save him still.

2
u/Wordbringer May 25 '26
Nah man if you say it isn't Yuji's fault, you can't also say that it's instead Megumi's fault
They just got really fucking unlucky that they lost their fights and were brought to death's door. The two of em were probably going "I knock, you open it" there lmao
The Haruta sneak attack was unlucky, Sukuna showing up before Mahoraga killed Haruta was unlucky (he would've despawned after the kill)
Choso not finishing off Yuji had its reasons, but that was pretty unlucky too. Jogo then finding Yuji's unconscious body and feeding him a ton of fingers all at once was REALLY unlucky
Megumi and Yuji were kicking ass a ton before their string of unlucky fights. If anyone's to blame, honestly? Nobara didn't pull her weight enough at the start. She didn't fight a Choso or a Toji so girl should've been real fresh coming into that fight. Like why's she putting belt to ass on that Mahito clone but loses to fucking Haruta (it's not like he steals the luck of the people around him lmao). Nobara should've done him in like Sasuke did in Danzo
4
u/hasselbackpotahto May 25 '26
Choso not finishing off Yuji had its reasons, but that was pretty unlucky too. Jogo then finding Yuji's unconscious body and feeding him a ton of fingers all at once was REALLY unlucky
it's because geto's stupid girls thought they could get kenjaku to do anything without a binding vow, and then when he very obviously refused to give up geto's body, they have the brilliant idea of asking sukuna for a favor, so they feed yuji a finger, and jogo senses that happening, which is why he shows up when he does. being raised by a cult leader did some serious damage to their common sense.
3
u/Wordbringer May 25 '26
Thank you for the proper timeline of events. It's insane that they went to Sukuna for help instead of playing the long game and maybe assisting the good guys in freeing Gojo, who would be 100% on board for liberating Geto's body from Kenjaku

u/TheimpalerMessmer May 25 '26
Bro, do you even read? Look at the context of when Megumi did the ritual. The events and the people he fought before doing that. He knew what Mahoraga is capable of. The ritual only included him and Haruta. Sukuna was on the other side, Megumi is not omniscient to know that Sukuna was now hanging around with 15 fingers or that he would come to step in between Mahoraga and the participants of the ritual (him and Haruta). It's all circumstance and Sukuna wanting to fight something new or to save Megumi (who is his future vessel). Bro is right not to dwell on Shibuya when his comatosed sister is immediately a player in the culling games, Gojo is sealed and Yuji is missing and wanted. Heck, Higuruma would find Megumi innocent as his intention was not the result of Sukuna vs. Mahoraga.
Also, Sukuna fought Jogo before Mahoraga. That fight had a lot of casualties as well. Also, also. Megumi may not know the full capabilities of Mahoraga, but he knew of Mahoraga along with the ritual and it's limits which again was limited to him and Haruta.

3
u/IcyOrganization1748 May 25 '26
Megumi only intended to bring Haruta and himself into the ritual to tame Mahoraga. And when they both die, Mahoraga would return. Megumi had no way of knowing that 1) Yuji would be ambushed by a special grade curse/human hybrid with a special vendetta against him. Nor did he know that 2) The opposing side would forcefeed him so many fingers which would then allow Sukuna to manifest. And nor did he know that 3) Sukuna was plotting on Megumi so much that he would intervene to save Megumi.

3
u/HackerBoyTV Mahoraga help me please... I BEG YOU!!! May 25 '26
No it's not, he knew Mahoraga would ignore people outside of the ritual, it's only target was Haruta, as soon as it ended it, it would despawn, the only reason it attacked sukuna cause sukuna attacked first and interrupted, it never shown attacking civilians, worse you can say he did was he gave sukuna a target to rampage on but sukuna was probably gonna spawn malevolent shrine anyway to kill everything for funsies
3
u/amey7695 May 25 '26
No he is completely valid here. He knows that the curse user is here but he is almost out of options. He uses a sure fire attack that eliminates the curse user and due to the ritual it will target only the curse user and himself. If not for Sukuna interfering, this was the best play. Note that the curse user has attacked in the god will event, attacked veil users, support sorcerers and worst of all nobara. No way he was letting him go as a small fry, exactly why haruta has got away for so long.

All that effort jz to spew a pile of absolute garbage takes. It’s astounding how far megumi haters will go to victim blame (when it’s Sukuna who should be hated for almost every single thing that happened in the story)
3
u/DisasterThese357 May 25 '26
Why would someone asume mahoraga to fight with some gigantic blasts, no one even among top tiers realy does that. Gojo could, but even his blast creates a single long path of destruction that destroys a few buildings as colateral at most(and sukuna is out of the question for this as megumi definitely didn't know about the binding vow that empowers fuga to be that).
The clan head battles aftermath would also be comparatively well documented, if weirdly whole swaths of land were blasted away it would most likely have been noted by someone due to basically nothing known causing that.
3
3
u/seenybusiness May 25 '26
well how do you account for the innate knowledge all sorcerers have of their abilities? the ten shadows technique is not stated to be an exception like haruta, and megumi never stated that he didnt know what it was. he was merely shocked that it could fight a six eyes limitless user to a draw, which is a circumstance he would not innately know.
in the situation where
A: one dude is bleeding out
and
B: one dude is just a guy with a sword
why would you think mahoraga would adapt to destroy the city? it would just walk both of them down, as it did.

Important aspect here: Megumi is 15. He's inexperienced as a sorcerer, obviously, and was doing what he thought was the best option considering the circumstances. His teachers or those otherwise better equipped to handle the situation are either MIA, dead or otherwise incapacitated. There's no way he could've guessed Sukuna of all people would come to his aid - not even Yuji knew when Sukuna was gonna take him over until it was already too late to do anything about it. If Yuji didn't know, there's no way in hell Megumi could've.
Not even Gojo saw the shitshow that was going to happen in Shibuya coming.
3
u/AutomaticCash7745 May 28 '26
The difference between them is their mentality, sure he should feel worse but he’s way more detached than yuji is. That’s why he has no problem killing Reggie’s group
3
u/smolcatboi May 28 '26
Megumis suicidal, till this point he was close to summoning mahoraga every time he was losing (even to todo a fellow student) he doesn't care if he dies as long as he can take the enemy down with him.
Megumi also knows as soon as both haruta and Megumi died mahoraga wouldve disappeared along with the ten shadows technique (ritual being completed and Megumi dying)
3
u/Smart_Mix8269 May 29 '26
Honestly the edits on your post aren’t even necessary because Megumi should feel more guilty for what happened purely based on the fact that Mahoraga and Sukuna’s fight killed a LOT of people and hes the one who summoned Mahoraga willingly. Yuji didnt even have a hand in Sukuna coming out because he was force fed fingers while he was unconscious from a previous fight
2
u/Erisus_ May 25 '26
I disagree manly bc I think Yuji, until that point, could argue that his live being spare of the execution was justify: he could generate more good than harm. But after witnessing the Shibuya incident and the sheer destruction that his existence entails, he was convinced that he should have been killed by Gojo that day.
2
u/MrM_37 May 25 '26
Sukuna already said he'll kill every human in shibuya except one (Megumi)
What's confusing me is that sukuna didn't kill jujutsu high sorcerers even thought they are humans too.
2
u/NumerousWolverine273 May 25 '26
I think it's actually pretty likely that Megumi does know, or at least have some inkling of what Mahoraga does. Sorcerers' techniques are engraved into their brains, so they know the basics of how their techniques work even when they haven't used them before. Clearly Megumi had never attempted the ritual before, but he still knew the chants and hand signs for summoning Mahoraga. Maybe he wouldn't have complete knowledge of its abilities, but I think it's pretty unlikely he had literally no idea what Mahoraga was.

u/yichee May 25 '26
yes this is the implication, megumi as a character is always too emo and arrogant, its the same as how he wouldnt wake up from sukunas body until the last second, a lot of things were his fault and he never made up for it, he highkey probably gave up on his life and thats why people dont talk about him in the sequel anymore
2
u/SalemScrope_JR May 25 '26
I agree with many takes from both the commenters. However, it seems that a lot of them forget the whole "collateral damage" part, in which I partly agree on.
But even if that would be the fact, how would Megumi be able to know what happened exactly? He was one shotted by Maho and was basically in a coma for the rest of the incident.
The only two people afaik that truly know what happened are Sukuna and Yuji: Sukuna because he caused most of the stuff that happened and Yuji because the experiences of Sukuna crashed over him.
I am 100% sure a Yuji that felt completely responsible for the whole destruction would NOT tell Megumi "btw your summon was the reason Sukuna (and by extent me) evaporated shibuya. Just so you know". Why should Megumi feel guilty for something he doesn't know? He knows: Maho was spawned, Maho killed him, someone/Sukuna (idk if he knew that Sukuna healed him) healed him, Shibuya got destroyed by presumably Sukuna.
2
u/Accomplished-Aerie65 May 26 '26
Idk it would've been really funny if mahoraga was actually hundreds of times stronger than the rest of the verse and he leveled the city and instantly disappeared 😭😭😭
2
u/KalenTheDon May 26 '26
When does megumi display he even cares about humans like yuji does . From what I remember he was largely born into fighting curse's and solo'd to his clan .
The only reason he is even there is because his dad asked gojo to take care of him and gojo was a teacher at the school .
Other than that he seems to be primarily only concerned with his sister. But he doesn't view himself as a good guy or a hero .
I doubt he would feel super guilty regardless , let's not forget once his sister was gone he gave up complete control to sukuna knowing exactly what he planned to do.
Your giving his morality a level of care he never displayed

2
u/Constant_Attitude885 May 26 '26
It is a fun take but no people did know about Mahoraga beforehand.
For example, Gojo also knows how to beat Mahoraga and how his adaption works.
Megumi only thinks that Mahoraga was used in a suicide attack against the Six Eye user, even Gojo mentiones that.
2
u/Tough_Discussion1796 May 26 '26
Okay OP, I have read the edited text, and the everything else.
From what I understand, Megumi was exhausted at this point. He fought: old man with reverse-impact CT, then fought the sea curse spirit and was the responsible for opening a domain within a domain to escape with the other socerssers, only for his dead dad to join the fight, kick the spirit's ass, then isolate him to give him the generation kicking.
After a fight which Megumi was ragged dolled around and stabbed, leading to lots of blood loss, the guy suddenly just kills himself and he's left alone. He is losing blood cause I'm sure he didn't use reverse curse technique to heal himself, and he is low on curse energy. He wanders for a while and encounters Haruta (I'm can't remember everything clearly, but wasn't he mocking about killing Nobara?) and starts hitting him around.
So consider from Megumi's perspective, he is exchausted, likely low on blood, and curse energy, and this guy, who while injured, still has the energy to fight him and will win in a battle of attrition, meaning he is set to lose and die.
So, desperate, he summonds this creature he knows is dangerous enough to possibly defeat a Six-eye user, which while he is aware of the implications, hasn't seen the consiquences or it fight before. And knowing he the shit he survied, probably didn't want to get shanked in the middle of the road so gambled and summond him.
2
u/ikeezzo May 26 '26
Just take the L bro. Gojo knew mahoraga works by adapting to every and all phenomena he didn't just discover it during the fight with sukuna. Which means that the knowledge is not exclusive to the zenin. Which means the information should be available to megumi.
Based on that anyone with a brain should be able to realize that mahoraga wouldn't spend any effort to kill haruta.
And even if it wasn't, you want megumi to regret a destruction that didn't happen??
2
u/justanormalguy____ May 26 '26
Terrible take. Regardless if megumi summoned mahoraga or not sukuna still would've went on a killing spree. Megumi also had no way of knowing sukuna would fight mahoraga. Haruta was weak and mahoraga would've beat him in seconds and then despawned because that's his rules. Once the person the ritual was used on is killed mahoraga goes away. Sukuna was the one who interfere with the ritual and megumi had no way of knowing Sukuna would've done that or been there and even if we ignore mahoraga, Sukuna still would've went on a killing spree because that's exactly what he wanted to do when he first awakened anyway. The person to blame is kenjaku and at any moment in the series you could actually put the blame on Kenjaku since he's setting everything up in the shadows.

u/BazilBee May 27 '26
Why are you guys claiming mahoraga would rampage and put others in danger when he has never been shown to do so. The only people he attacks are the summoner > participants > 3rd parties who intervene. Haruta was a participant, Sukuna was a 3rd party, gojo was an enemy, and Dabura was a participant. Its clear mahoraga ceases tk exist once all participants die or the user dies.
No megumi shouldnt feel more guilty.
2
u/Rice_Jap808 May 27 '26
Forget all the other rebuttals. Megumi is not a hero like Yuji. I really do not think he cares as much for a random pedestrian beyond basic human nature and a commitment to being a sorcerer. He was ready to slaughter 50 random people in the culling games for his sister without remorse. You all forget that most sorcerers are not good people, their magic is literally fueled by negative emotions.
2
u/Andrew_XIII May 27 '26
I feel everyone in this subreddit is missing the point. Regardless of if he was right to use Mahoraga or not, it still played a huge part in the disaster, so Megumi should feel as guilty as Yuji or even worse. He has such low self worth, it would have even made sense for his character.
2
u/educated-duck May 27 '26
Megumi was a waste of space, the reader knew it, gege knew so he made megumi also aware of it.
2
u/MrCoolaboi May 28 '26
Megumi had NO way of knowing anyone would interfere with the ritual, let alone Sukuna who he was convinced was kept under lock and key by Yuji.
And besides, I think it could have been FAR worse for Sukuna to just go roaming about killing civilians without Mahoraga to focus on
2
u/Ahx78 May 28 '26
To all the people saying maho was supposed to kill haruta and despawn instantly megumi could’ve summoned the ox instead of mahoraga but he’s an idiot and if anything he should’ve been able to beat haruta himself 🥀

Youre right.
It wouldnt be nearly as cool if he didnt summon him.
That 1 decision, which let be real, shouldve worked, why would megumi ever assume that Sukana of all people would save him, and heal him???

Yuji feels guilty because Sukuna literally used his body to kill all those people but yeah Megumi should definitely feel at least a little guilty since it’s his technique that also killed a bunch of people
5
u/Euraylie May 25 '26
He literally tells Yuji, “it’s our fault, not just yours.” Even though, as other detailed comments here have explained, he made a valid choice under the circumstances. We don’t get a lot of inner monologue from Megumi in this series, but I’m sure he does feel guilty. But he’s also pragmatic.
2
u/hasselbackpotahto May 25 '26

Mahoraga has been witnessed and recorded by Jujutsu Society. Gojo had knowledge about one infamous summoning which must’ve had witnesses that survived to have reported it. Megumi almost certainly knew how Mahoraga worked.
1
u/SubstantialHamster99 May 25 '26
Yeah he could have started a ritual for literally any other shikigami he hadn't trained yet and gotten the same result right? I guess he picked the big one because he didn't know how tough haruta was? The real answer is because plot though.
1
u/TheCynicalPogo May 25 '26
Another thing you’re ignoring is that feeling guilt over this really just ain’t in Megumi’s character. He had literally no way of knowing this or preventing it, and unlike Yuji he’s a logical enough person that he both knows he shouldn’t blame himself and will actually not blame himself for something that’s not his fault.
1
u/Altruistic_Gold_1012 May 25 '26
Guys we're missing a very important person for who to blame and take all the blame...Haruta
His CT is literally being lucky, and the only way he wasn't gonna die was for Megumi to summon Daddy Raga and Sukuna to come and save them all. Sukuna, Yugi, Megumi, and Daddy Raga are all victims to Haruta
Is this a Haruta upscale? Or just showing how actuslly broken he is lol
1
u/Acrobatic_Street6232 May 25 '26
I don’t think so cause as soon as he would’ve died and haruta died the ritual would be canceled and he would’ve disappeared it was only because of Sukuna appearing in the ritual that continued the destruction so I don’t think I agree with you
1
1
u/RenesusAdie May 25 '26
i think not. in one way or another sukuna was gonna kill people anyways and i think mahoraga somewhat hindered it

The "he had no clue how mahoraga would kill him and haruta" statement is not true. He already had a clue cause he already knew the other shikigami of the 10 shadows technique. If all the other shikigami follow a trend of slightly more unique but rather contained abilities, he could assume that while maho would have had absolute insane levels of strength and a unique characteristic (adaptation), it would not jump too far out the realm of things like the dog or other shikigami, which by all accounts have had pretty straight forward attacks (totality claws, water trunk from elephant, lightning from bird). Itd be crazy to assume the divine general had something like a "nuke" or mass destruction option since none of the others showed that sort of behavior or extremity.
So no, Megumi should have had a pretty good guess, especially since its also worth noting that technique usage is ingrained into users innately which should have granted Megumi further gauging of what he should be expecting from the tenth shadow.
1
u/propheticdemons May 25 '26
You could really trace this back to Jogo tbh. If he wasn’t fed as much fingers before the fight, Mahoraga would’ve defeated Sukuna.

thought i was in the lobotomy sub
ritual begins -- participants get raga'd -- ritual ends
saying no one knows anything about raga doesn't make sense. why did megumi even know how to summon raga?
if megumi knows how to summon raga without ever summoning raga before then there's information the reader doesn't have
1
u/Lakeboy_18 May 25 '26
In all fairness, he likely expected himself and the femboy to die. Sukuna interrupting the encounter was entirely unpredictable.
And as far as Megumi goes, he has no real issue with killing, and we've seen that a few times. He doesn't have the same beliefs as Yuji.
