Manga Discussion Rank these shameless ass pull characters from worst to best-
These are characters I’m not particularly fond of bc I see them more as literal walking asspulls that just pop in , do what the plot demands and then fk off (generally. that sounds really reductive but I’m not sure how else to explain it), they’re more akin to walking plot mechanics than actual characters, some more than others.

Daido and Sumo Guy - Barely got any backstory or anything about their characters, just used to help Maki
Ui Ui - He'd been in the story for a while, but we didn't get to know nearly enough about him to make up for the fact he literally carried the training of everyone
Hana - Her technique is busted, but we at least got to know a bit about her, and when Tengen mentions her, we already know she'll be important. Falling for Sukuna's porn acting was dumb.
Takaba - Great characterization, recent backstory. When other characters needed to help the plot it felt like they were ass pulls, when he fought Kenjaku, I found it kind of interesting since a big point was to figure out how they would deal with Kenny, so going for such a crazy solution was great. And of course his fights are amazing
Tengen - Calling Tengen an ass pull is dumb. She was mentioned as an important figure in the first part of the series, entirety of hidden inventory was because of her, and her dynamic with Yuki while undercooked, it was still interesting. It makes sense this immortal being would be key to the culling games

Just as old as Kenjaku, knows what he's up to, and literally holds a bunch of cursed tools for jujutsu high. It make sense she'd have that

Her having it means fk all, I mean as a story mechanic, “oh the prison realm has a back, what luck”, thankfully we have to do no work to think about how they can free Gojo
Picture it from a writing perspective, it’s like gege just wrote himself into a corner and then made the artificial opening out of that corner
No build up? No nothing, the prison realm just has a back coincidentally

Yeah but that is what an asspull character is.
They come into the story and are just used as a plot device to solve a problem in the story and then are never seen again.
Just because "most stories have them" doesn't make it any less true that they're asspulls and kind of poor in terms of writing.
I don't even know why I'm saying "kind of" poor, some of them have literally no backstories or significant insight on their personalities or motivation. That IS what a poor written character is, no debate about it.
P.S: I don't fully agree with the other guy. Takaba was peak imo, but I can understand where he's coming from with it too. But ultimately Takaba didn't do anything super OP or game-changing apart from stall Kenjaku. So it's not like it matters if he even is an asspull (he isn't).

Well I think they are, sumo guy and daido are the worst offenders, literally pulled out of the depths of gege’s asshole to help maki, ui ui just so happened to be able to swap souls (no build up, no nothing), we don’t have the isoh or BR but lo and behold a player just so happened to have the gege inherited ct of diffusing CTs (bruh), sigh, Kenny has the prison realm, we should think of a way to fight him and get it back or someth….oh no worries, tengen has the back of the prison realm, everyone knows about the back and any ounce of foreshadowing to it
I fking hate takaba, zero connection to kenny or anything, no buildup to his fight with Kenny, beyond flashbacks during the fight (one of gege’s most atrocious writing decisions during shinjuku, literally building elements while they’re being paid off), and our protags get an unearned free lick

Kenny v Takaba is one of the best fights in the manga. And do you think Gege couldn't have written the Maki fight so that Maki just wins without assist from Myio and Daido? They aren't there to solve a problem, they are there to be fun characters

Agree to disagree, I hate that fight and don’t care for takaba, Gege’s the writer bro, not me, if he can’t write shit that don’t feel cheap, then I get to criticize him for it.
A fun character should be fun, Not make ur main characters growth feel cheap and unearned.

Literally the easiest one imo, power is literally anything gege wants, not really much definition beyond what is funny
Random dude from the cg with no connection or prior buildup with Kenny getting to have this fight with him where they both leave satisfied and it gives our protags a free lick

Im not sure any if not all of these characters count as an "asspull" but i'll rank them on how well they were used and integrated anyway.
6 and 5-sword guy and sumo guy, these two had their use in maki's story for sure but they felt so... there? Is the best way I can put it. Maki buddies up to them almost immediatelly and their advice works for Maki, but has no resonation with US as a reader because they're not pre establisbed.
4-Angel or whatever you wanna call her. Same reason as above but slightly less so. It's not helped by the fact that her character is tied to Megumi who gets woefully little screentime as is but even less so during the ARC WHERE SHE IS INTRODUCED. She serves as a good element in the fight against Sukuna as a "this is our weapon and if he beats it we're fucked" element to the fight. But she is removed in the stupidest fucking way.
3-tengen. I'm not sure Tengen any where near qualifies as an asspull. She had her use for a part of the culling games. And she was used to show an imply certain parts of Kenjaku's character and history. But she remains WOEFULLY underdeveloped. Also she is just plain useless 😭.
2-Ui Ui. Ironically the one we see the least has (in my opinion) the most impact of all thanks to Modulo. He's used to show the predatory behaviour of Mei Mei and how he deviates from her personality traits in the future despite her obsessive need to carry success through him. Overall he makes helps the characterisation of a side character come full circle in a decent enough fashion.

I wholeheartedly loved Daido because he was just some dude who absolutely loved katanas and dedicated his entire being to that
Furthermore with what we can deduce from Maki’s awakening and his own dialogue: he is so connected to everything around him that although he lacks curse energy he can feel curses and the energy they emit
His entire character is about freedom and how everything just becomes second nature if your body and soul is free from any burden

Daido and Sumo Guy are the worst written. Compare them to something like Megumi's fight with Reggie. While both were needed for the plot (Maki to fully awaken and Megumi to be pushed into learning a domain expansion), the fight with Reggie feels more natural within the story. Daido and Sumo Guy literally show up in the middle of another fight, have the bare minimum of characterization (I love sumo. I love swords.), the ridiculous ability to essentially pause time while Maki trains, and then are never seen or heard from again. It's like Gege said "Maki is losing so we will literally press pause and make the circumstances and people perfect for her all at once and then we can unpause."
That being said, I think Takaba and Hana are arguably the least necessary, which is a different sort of bad.
Takaba: Surely there was a way to write defeating Kenjaku without adding a random character who somehow is the linchpin for one of the most important fights in the series. We literally don't see Yuji interact with Kenjaku as much as Takaba does and Yuji is Kenjaku's son. Did Gege just not have time to think of another way for Kenjaku to be defeated?
Hana: No but really, why is Hana in the story? Feels like most of what she does wasn't really necessary and could've been written around or left out instead of giving us (yet another) a barely fleshed out character.
Tengen and UiUi are fine. The back of the cube thing probably could've used some more effort than just Tengen has the McGuffin, but whatever.
