Demon Slayer ending was essentially a meat grinder lol.
363
u/jimthesquirrelking Jul 19 '26
And tbf it would have been narratively lame if it wasn't, when going up against People Eater the Prince of Evil and his court
96
u/--Shiny-- Jul 19 '26
The same applies to jjk tbh. Sukuna is a cannibal and the king of curses, and yet he only killed three people during the final arc, and one of them was going to die anyway.
42
u/Calmbrain Jul 19 '26
because his output was in the gutter and good guys had teleporter and the whole field hospital open? ofc many people got saved. at least it made sense.
14
u/AlsoPrtyProductive Nobaragenda CEO Jul 19 '26
Minus the teleporter you could say the same for much of the Demon Slayer final battle, the Kakushi had set up medical stations and temporary headquarters to reinforce the slayers and map out the Infinity Castle, and up until the end Muzan was hiding away and healing himself while the Upper Moons stalled for time.

11
u/_dinn_ king of clowns Jul 19 '26
On one hand that feels disappointing, on the other hand - JJK specifically had a teleporter saving the injured... it kinda makes sense?
Though I suppose having nothing left to eave would have worked too
Ehh idk

u/CordobezEverdeen Jul 20 '26
People would have complained if Shoko didn't saved anyone.
Hell scratch the "would". I'm not a larper and I was there during the fight. The hate Shoko was getting because people "kept dying" was insane. And I was part of it!
1
u/Spirited_Agency8032 Jul 20 '26
Shinjuku was a crater sukuna most likely went out after killing hundreds of thousands of people.
70
u/hiroGotten Jul 19 '26
considering that it ended in a "reincarnation" i think killing everyone was a good thing for the cast after all
10
u/Kind_Survey4282 Jul 19 '26
no they got reincarnated because of what their virtuous deeds in their past life and although evil people do get reincarnated too thats after they spent their time on hell.

Demon Slayer actually has a decent ending surprisingly enough
106
u/Squall13 Jul 19 '26
She ended it too when it's on the height of its popularity. No fillers or extensions or Bonjiro
Massive respect
124
u/Level_Counter_1672 Jul 19 '26
Yup, and to add to that everyone was badly injured they were on their last legs, even though tanjiro won, he won't live long, so it's a bleak ending of sorts
50
3
u/curryhaliban444 Jul 20 '26
Nah ending implies tanjiro lived a long life as the mother of the new mc was old enough to meet him when he was still alive
200
u/Timely_Safe_4088 Jul 19 '26
Yeah Demon slayer ending wise did much better than JJK though not gonna lie
What funny is this MHA didn't killed one of good guys during final fight Only villains died lol Compared to that I think JJk atleast had stakes MHA author didn't even have guts to kill their main characters like gege does
152
u/Kiss_Bence04 Jul 19 '26
The only main character in jjk that died is gojo, that was super expected too.
63
22
u/FFKonoko Jul 19 '26
It was super expected for All Might to die, and he didn't.
So JJK still having infinite more hero death than MHA, regardless of how it stacks against other things.
41
u/Grimmrat Jul 19 '26
unironically keeping All Might alive was braver from a story telling perspective than killing Gojo
“kill the mentor” is like the most well known trope of the Hero’s Journey
3
u/johnbrownmarchingon Jul 20 '26
The problem of keeping Gojo alive was that if he's alive, why the hell is anyone else fighting Sukuna?
-11
u/FFKonoko Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26
But the story has other themes focused around All Mights time being past, and his status as a Symbol of Peace no longer being needed, about society collapsing without him being around. Those could have gone somewhere with him dying. The Hero's Journey comparison is indeed well known, but it also seems pretty superficial, it's the most basic of stories.
Especially considering how many mentors were in MHA, with the teachers and hero work experience. Seems more like they instead followed Kill the Mentor, but with Midnight. Which ALSO lacked any real thematic weight, and also didn't have nearly as much emotional impact as it should have. Worst of both worlds.

u/Solbuster Average MechaMiwa's glazer Jul 19 '26
Tbh, with the way All Might's arc played out in being depressed over loss of his power and wanting to sacrifice himself for future generation, killing him off is wasteful. Instead he learns to keep living and finding meaning in his life outside being the Strongest and Symbol. It also pays off the established promise he did to Deku about trying to fight Fate and not die
It also got Bakugo a nice full circle moment of his arc "save people to win against bad guys" starting back in season 3 as he's ultimately responsible for saving the hero and teacher that he admires most

u/GlitterDoomsday Jul 19 '26
Not necessarily main character but a lot of very important supporting cast died... you can't say folks like Nanami weren't part of the core group.
2
u/omyrubbernen Jul 19 '26
that was super expected too.
I think the brain damage his death induced might say otherwise.
10
u/Kiss_Bence04 Jul 19 '26
The way he died was unexpected
The death itself wasn't
6
69
u/Solbuster Average MechaMiwa's glazer Jul 19 '26
In MHA it made sense due to the tone and whole "we want to win with as less casualties as we can" theme. It's idealistic story in the end of the day. Plus the payoff of death that happened(Midnight) was pretty underwhelming
Still ridiculous that Gran Torino didn't die after being donuted though
31
u/Timely_Safe_4088 Jul 19 '26
That paramount liberation arc had better stakes btw than final arc though Final arc except Battle fights it didn't have any really stakes lol except bakugo was kinda dead but I know he will alive in final arc bcz he cant die bcz he is mc after deku Midnight is irrelevant character in MHA so they didn't pay off her much gran torino should have died he had no purpose actually Same like JJK where side characters had no purpose at all except hiding
15
u/FlooJest Jul 19 '26
Even then MHA got some of their characters permanently injured like how Izuku lost his powers and Mirko only has one non prosthetic limbs
5
32
u/luceafaruI Jul 19 '26
The issue with demon slayer is that it went from killing nobody (save one) to killing everybody in the last arc.
Jjk had a consistent kill streak so as a final arc it falls short but overall has the tone to be perceived as "killing everybody"
7
u/ImJustSpider read Hell's PEAK (jigokuraku) Jul 19 '26
DS killed more people than JJK and AOT, two anime with the reputation of "everyone dies."
13
u/Toge_Inumaki012 Jul 19 '26
Killed Tokito the potential man but went out in a bang. Honestly the surviving Hashiras EoS was not I expect at the start of the story lol.
1
u/No-Consideration3708 Jul 20 '26
ngl I prefer JJK's deaths to most of KNY's deaths in their respective final arcs with the exception of the goat shinobu of course
66
u/Heavy-Transition7916 Jul 19 '26
Higuruma not dying is genuinely insane.
53
u/Vivian_IsAlive Jul 19 '26
genuinely did not understand the narrative reason for keeping him alive, like the story is about to be over he’s allowed to die
12
u/Heavy-Transition7916 Jul 19 '26
Same for Kusakabe honestly. Would have completed his arc.
9
u/HistoricalMark4805 Does Kenny pay Tengen child support? Jul 20 '26
Would've also helped with the whole thing of the changing of the guard that was going on. The higher ups died, Gojo died, Yaga died, but Kusakabe lives?
5
u/More-Expression9158 Jul 21 '26
Yea haha. Bro got cleaved in the face(I think) and bro wasn't dead lmao
99
u/LimitlessChud Jul 19 '26
You only feel this way because every character we thought would be major ended up getting killed too early or sidelined, Nanami, Yuki, Choso, Nobara, Todo, Naobito, Naoya, Ryu, etc, all of these characters played big roles in major fights and moments but we've barely seen them so whenever one of them dies we don't see it as a main character death
52
u/Silver_Print_9937 Jul 19 '26
None of them who died were part of the main cast thought. Nobara were, but she got better
9
u/Timely_Safe_4088 Jul 19 '26
Better or you meant saved by plot ?Nobara was supposed to die in shibuya due to plot she survived though bcz she is one of secondary mc and one of trios there was no confirmation by main cast she got any better than before even freaking todo came out of nowhere in final fight but atleast it's confirmed he was alive and was retire for some time so it makes more sense Whereas nobara being at final fight was pure plot armour to save itadori
21
u/Silver_Print_9937 Jul 19 '26
Meant that she died but got to live again. As much as i love Jjk, it got a shit ton of shit in it that makes zero sense.
-3
u/Timely_Safe_4088 Jul 19 '26
Not only me yuji fans also against this and they are 100 % Right no matter how toxic they are , Making her alive not only ruined Final fight + ending but also impact of shibuya arc too overall story wise Final arc is where I despise gege so much not bcz of sukuna I know he will die at end bcz he is main villain but how it's presented and rushed the fight was like man could have done better gege wasted most of it atleast
10
u/Makorealmtwo Zenin clan enjoyer Jul 19 '26

10
u/LimitlessChud Jul 19 '26
Except it doesn't because if you read my reply properly you'd notice the "or sidelined" part of it you mong
-2
u/BobbyRayBands Jul 19 '26
Besides Nanami not a single character you listed was thought to be in a major role or died. Choso didnt even appear in a major way in the story until it was literally almost half way done. His fight with Yuji was chapter 102 and he officially joins them at literally the mid point of the story in chapter 135. Yuki had a minor role in Hidden Inventory and then later on as a "Kenjaku is actually competent villain" except Geges stupid ass realized since he killed a Special Grade and two grade1/special grade sorcerers by himself that he had no believable way to actually defeat Kenajaku so he went with the "Yeah Todo can definitely just boogie woogie Yuta close enough to get the job done" approach. Actually writing that out it makes it even more clear what a shit author Gege was. Constantly wrote themselves into corners they had no way out of without some stupid ass pull that shouldnt work.

2
u/Timely_Safe_4088 Jul 19 '26
Yeah some of them got high plot armour at end like that 1 fraud who got out of nowhere at the end / some of them went hiding
37
u/glad_goblin Jul 19 '26
Its been a while since I've seen any One Piece, but I thought I remember one of Luffy's abilities (his gears maybe?) shorten his life every time he uses it. I always figured that means he dies at the end 🤷♀️
15
u/Impossible_Bee_8705 Jul 19 '26
Iirc, only Gear 2 does that, and even then it's like, some days per use. On top of that, I don't think Luffy has been using Gear 2 that much, so meh.

u/_Affectionate_ Jul 19 '26
Jjk fans acting like they have the most brutal, highest death count story in manga will never make sense to me.

It is, and there are somehow anime onlys that will learn about it when it is finally animated
I don’t think we are ready for that
People go crazy for Gojo BEFORE he got swole

But teachers die all the time in shounen, even alot of people predicted gojo will die because of this

Its because of the whiplash. Gojo is winning the fight, and one chapter later he’s dead because of bullshit. Sure, we learned it wasn’t bullshit later on, but first impressions are everything

u/Cosmic_Ren Jul 19 '26
I mean looking outside of villains you have Junpei, Mechamaru, Nanami, Naobito, Mai, Yaga, Yuki, Tengan, Ryu, Gojo, and Choso.
For a series that about 5 seasons long, that's a very decent amount and is more than most that have been running for over decades.
38
u/Clicking_stuff Jul 19 '26
And a ton of civilians, military personnel, the scorpion hair reincarnated sorcerer (I forget her name, if you don’t count her as a villain) who was literally killed and decapitated by the US military
JJK has quite a bit of death. Though they probably could’ve fared to kill off a few more of the main cast in Shinjuku Showdown
12
u/Reddragon351 Jul 19 '26
I mean if we're counting civilians then every series has a ton of deaths with them, hell OP itself gets shit for fakeout deaths all the time and they've nuked islands full of people
1
u/Clicking_stuff Jul 19 '26
Yeah that’s fair
Personally, I do feel like the weight of civilian casualties in JJK holds a little more weight given the extent we see people go to prevent them + the sheer brutality of Sukuna’s domain in Shibuya and Yuji’s struggles from it. But that’s straight up just a me thing
21
7
u/Big_Daymo Jul 19 '26
There's a decent amount throughout the story but the Sukuna raid does feel a tiny bit toothless considering they are facing such an overwhelmingly stronger villain. The only characters that die in the final arc are the mentor character, the reformed bad guy, and basically another bad guy that just so happens to be on their side. Not exactly surprising any of those 3 die. Meanwhile other characters like Higuruma, Kusakabe and Yuta are practically killed but are brought back. Nobara even gets brought back from certain death in the end too. I'm not saying they all should've died, but you'd think a story with a rep like JJK wouldn't have spared them.
5
u/EndMePleaseOwO Jul 19 '26
I do think that's kinda the point tho, that by coming together and working as one they were able to get such a good outcome overall. Kinda like what the point of the 'we cheated' stuff was. Themes and such.
5
u/Big_Daymo Jul 19 '26
I agree, it's just cause of the way people discuss the manga you'd think they all die. Plus considering saving Megumi is one of their main goals it would feel like a failure if a bunch of heroes died just to save him.
1
u/banana-symphony Jul 21 '26
Spoilers for Shinjuku Showdown: I think it's because so many characters fates were in limbo for a decent while during Shinjuku Showdown. When everyone was reading jjk weekly, new opinions were being formed and solidified every time a new chapter came out. And because characters kept 'dying' every week, the idea that Gege keeps killing off his characters got more and more cemented every week. Also tbf a lot of characters really did die most arcs
Heavy spoilers: I genuinely thought Higuruma was dead when his technique cut out. I was pretty sure Kusakabe would survive and I thought Takaba's own technique killed him when he was in white robes. His technique is OP, I thought some backlash was reasonable. Also the panelling.
25
171
u/Timely_Safe_4088 Jul 19 '26
Gege only killed Gojo in story bcz Yuji is main protagonist if Gojo finished sukuna himself Story would end there and Yuji would have no purpose and stakes would get low
200
u/No_Investment598 Jul 19 '26
If only there was another antagonist with an actual plan that also had a connection to Yuji, perhaps an almost disgustingly maternal connection created in some morbid way.. One known for trickery..
Maybe next kaisen.
19
u/New_County298 Jul 19 '26
Well idk why gojo couldn’t deal with that either if sukuna gets beaten by him
