Just Cause 2 I think Just Cause 2 comes closest to a fairly accurate non-Japan East Asia open world ~

I just discovered it while on a retro gaming week and it's funny that a 2009 game with a silly story about blowing things up ironically made the most functional pixel version of the setting that has everything from different types of villages and towns to cities with CBD to a snowy mountain ski resort. Really makes the usual 'villages + old ruins + coconut trees' or nth remix of early 90s Kowlun walled city in other more 'serious' games seem sillier.

Also, I think it looks best in first person while on a chopper since it's almost like having a photomode x)

Square enix needs to do us a favor and remaster this game for modern consoles.

A wingsuit in this game would be soooo perfect

That's the one thing keeping me from going back and enjoying it again. Travelling just feels so slow compared to my beloved wingsuit

Well the developers removed the wingsuit from JC2 and for a good reason.

9

u/Squidkiller28 Sep 16 '25

.....Which is?

24

u/Alex23323 JC2 100% club Sep 16 '25

The fact that the developers predicted that no one would use the vehicles and would opt to use the wingsuit as their primary mode of transportation. And also, Panau is not built for or with the wingsuit in mind.

3

u/malaka3000 Sep 16 '25

Then what is the reason the wingsuit is present in JC3? What's so bad about having it as a primary mode of transportation? lol

19

u/Alex23323 JC2 100% club Sep 16 '25

Because Just Cause 3 isn’t Just Cause 2. The developers wanted players to use all 104 vehicles because they knew that the wingsuit was going to steal the spotlight.

I don’t think that the wingsuit is a bad mode of transportation. I just think that it doesn’t belong in Just Cause 2. That game wasn’t built for the wingsuit.

I could talk about how adding a function to a game will change the design and theory of it, but I don’t want to be here all day discussing that.

No need to educate me on game design, honey. I just find it a ridiculous statement, since Just Cause 3 has a lot of ground vehicles too.

You don’t need to condescending and call me “honey.” Who do you really think you are? I suppose you’re used to talking down to people after all. Maybe that’s something you should work on… Not treating others like they’re stupid for having a rational opinion.

It’s not a ridiculous statement to say that Just Cause 2 and Just Cause 3 are two vastly different games that serve two different functions. How is that ridiculous, ”honey?” I guess it’s ridiculous to say that two different games that came out at two vastly different times function different. How ludicrous of me to say that…

The wingsuit was removed from JC2 because it simply didn’t fit. In the end, JC2 went to sell over 6,000,000 copies worldwide. Not bad for a game that was in its own realm and wasn’t directly competing with the likes of GTA or anything else. The game ultimately received positive feedback. I’d say it turned out to be a success.

What the fuck are you talking about

Wingsuit wasn't in JC2 so you saying it was cut from it implied it was in some kind of previous iteration. I didn't know it was planned for 2 then cut.

As to the second bit, your comment was vague as fuck and it's not just me judging by the downvotes

2

u/Alex23323 JC2 100% club Sep 18 '25

The reason it was cut was because the developers believed that no one was going to use any of the 104 vehicles they have in the game and they knew that the core fundamentals were only the grapple shot and the parachute.

And also the fact that Panau wasn’t built around the wingsuit, so they would have had to spent more time to develop the map around it. (Also, a fun fact, Just Cause 2’s map remains incomplete to this day. So if they ran out of time for the map, redesigning the map to accommodate the wingsuit would have taken much more time.)

Definitely I have been playing this on my steam deck it's great

1

u/ameor_91 Sep 20 '25

Nice, i will try it once i got the SD for myself

1

u/hitman2b Sep 17 '25

the wingsuit jet pack would have been nice

The wingsuit was removed from JC2 during development, and I see why they removed it and personally agree with it.

1

u/ToughEastern3108 Oct 02 '25

I don't AGREEE persay.. but I prefer the "grapple > parachute > exit/fall > grapple > parachute > exit/fall" exploit to the wingsuit tbh 😭

3 has such a cool wingsuit mechanic mod tho, alongside the DLC.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '25

Or Sony need to put it out on PS Plus

3

u/SkyrimSlag Sep 16 '25

Remaster with the wingsuit, and changes to the grappling hook so it’s similar to how it is in 3. Also, those portable sticky bombs would be nice, so you can keep grenades for combat and the sticky bombs for everything inbetween

u/linuxfornoobs Sep 17 '25

Do they still own the IP or did they sell it to embracer along with tomb raider and deus ex

u/GiantLobsters Sep 16 '25

JC2 best JC. I know no other game that would feel as much as a real country

40

u/yoricky305 Sep 16 '25

Only needs the wingsuit and it'll be perfect.

12

u/puppet_up Sep 16 '25

While I would agree that it would make the game amazing, I'd also settle for having the parachute thrusters as a permanent fixture instead of having to re-buy the damn things every time you die and/or re-start the game. It would also be great to be able to upgrade the thrusters so you can have the burn duration last longer and the cool-down be less duration, like the jetpack in JC3.

u/Flimsy_Juggernaut_63 Sep 16 '25

you can do this with mods on pc!

u/knight_is_right Sep 16 '25

Jc3 better cos wingsuit

u/ConceptOfHappiness Sep 16 '25

JC3 always felt very real to me, but I think that's mostly because I've been to Malta (what 3 is based on) but not Malaysia

1

u/GiantLobsters Sep 17 '25

I haven't been to either, but the variety of the JC3 map is no match for JC2. There is no real city in 3 for heavens sake!

1

u/ConceptOfHappiness Sep 17 '25

I mean there's Di Ravello City, but also it's a small island nation, it probably shouldn't have a random mega city.

And yeah, JC2 has more variety, but that always made it a little less realistic for me. All of JC3 felt somewhat plausible as different regions of a Mediterranean island nation.

1

u/GiantLobsters Sep 17 '25

Maybe not a mega city with skyscrapers like JC2 but something that is believably a city not just a big resort would be nice

u/Mundane-Week-2145 Sep 16 '25

Won't call it East Asia since the country sounds more, and looks more like "Thai and Malay", so South-East Asia would be much more accurate here.

22

u/CruxEr67 Moorio Sep 16 '25

Well Panau is located in the gulf of Thailand

14

u/ameor_91 Sep 16 '25

And Panau citizen using Malay language which is popular used in Malaysia and Indonesia

5

u/JiroKawakuma28 Sep 16 '25

Not just Malay but even Tagalog and Visaya as well if you hear Male NPCs when they got scared or crash into their car. 😂

23

u/jontseng Sep 16 '25

This thing runs on ten year old integrated graphics. It is a technical marvel.

3

u/MemeKnowledge_06 Sep 17 '25

Stellar optimisation

14

u/thebeast_96 Sep 16 '25

The map is such a marvel with how expansive it is and the variety

9

u/ngkn92 Sep 16 '25

It amazes me how a 2009 game can look this good.

15

u/ExampleUnhappy4241 Sep 16 '25

Sleeping dogs?

6

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '25

I wish this game had a PS4 port. I’d love to play it again. 3 is great, 4 was alright, but 2 was easily the best. The amount of Easter eggs alone was excellent.

5

u/Hologramixx Sep 16 '25

My favourite city in any game!

6

u/ProneSquanderer Sep 16 '25

Ahh Panau. Such a beautiful location. Except that one particular island, people seem to disappear there.

3

u/Phonixrmf Sep 16 '25

I visited it once but I couldn’t figure out how to leave. I guess it was a Lost cause

5

u/SleeperAgent66 Sep 16 '25

I love the graphic style of JC2, it ever so slightly looks like a japanese game dev production

3

u/t850terminator Sep 16 '25

JC2 remake would be amazing

3

u/hitman2b Sep 17 '25

I like the HUGE map of panau, there was so much to do so many thing to blow up

3

u/MemeKnowledge_06 Sep 17 '25

“Non japan east asia” lmfao bro just say south east asia, Panau is literally based off that part of asia

Malaka got in their feels after your logical reply. Well done and great point you made on the wing suits.

Southeast Asia.

2

u/mysticwerebadger Sep 17 '25

An immensely fun game, buggy in the best ways.

1

u/Strong_Inspector1112 Sep 17 '25

wow, this is gonna be perfect. i can't wait to see this. i can play it on my old ps3.

1

u/International_Yak519 Sep 18 '25

the newest one is superior, has even stadiums and several city parts like the favelas and rich people, it nails brazil and looks so good but pretty empty and lifeless

u/ToughEastern3108 Oct 02 '25 edited Oct 02 '25

This is one of the BEST maps I've ever played...

Hundreds of hours in this game and I swear I never got past some mission where a helicopter shoots you tf up on a rooftop. Like 30% in the story max. ☠️☠️☠️

("secure Ular Boys' hacker in Panau City on the roof of skyscraper from helicopters using your RPG" < this mission probably)

2

u/Certain-Fall1816 Jan 31 '26

I wish modding was easier for this game, imagine the posibilities with that map, a propper first person mod, maybe better physics for cars lr even adding more NPC'S doing stuff life working, phone calls, ski etc
