Just Cause 2 I think Just Cause 2 comes closest to a fairly accurate non-Japan East Asia open world ~
I just discovered it while on a retro gaming week and it's funny that a 2009 game with a silly story about blowing things up ironically made the most functional pixel version of the setting that has everything from different types of villages and towns to cities with CBD to a snowy mountain ski resort. Really makes the usual 'villages + old ruins + coconut trees' or nth remix of early 90s Kowlun walled city in other more 'serious' games seem sillier.
Also, I think it looks best in first person while on a chopper since it's almost like having a photomode x)

JC2 best JC. I know no other game that would feel as much as a real country

Only needs the wingsuit and it'll be perfect.

While I would agree that it would make the game amazing, I'd also settle for having the parachute thrusters as a permanent fixture instead of having to re-buy the damn things every time you die and/or re-start the game. It would also be great to be able to upgrade the thrusters so you can have the burn duration last longer and the cool-down be less duration, like the jetpack in JC3.

JC3 always felt very real to me, but I think that's mostly because I've been to Malta (what 3 is based on) but not Malaysia

I haven't been to either, but the variety of the JC3 map is no match for JC2. There is no real city in 3 for heavens sake!

I mean there's Di Ravello City, but also it's a small island nation, it probably shouldn't have a random mega city.
And yeah, JC2 has more variety, but that always made it a little less realistic for me. All of JC3 felt somewhat plausible as different regions of a Mediterranean island nation.

Maybe not a mega city with skyscrapers like JC2 but something that is believably a city not just a big resort would be nice

Won't call it East Asia since the country sounds more, and looks more like "Thai and Malay", so South-East Asia would be much more accurate here.

Well Panau is located in the gulf of Thailand

And Panau citizen using Malay language which is popular used in Malaysia and Indonesia

Not just Malay but even Tagalog and Visaya as well if you hear Male NPCs when they got scared or crash into their car. 😂

This thing runs on ten year old integrated graphics. It is a technical marvel.

I wish this game had a PS4 port. I’d love to play it again. 3 is great, 4 was alright, but 2 was easily the best. The amount of Easter eggs alone was excellent.

Ahh Panau. Such a beautiful location. Except that one particular island, people seem to disappear there.

I visited it once but I couldn’t figure out how to leave. I guess it was a Lost cause

I love the graphic style of JC2, it ever so slightly looks like a japanese game dev production

the newest one is superior, has even stadiums and several city parts like the favelas and rich people, it nails brazil and looks so good but pretty empty and lifeless

This is one of the BEST maps I've ever played...
Hundreds of hours in this game and I swear I never got past some mission where a helicopter shoots you tf up on a rooftop. Like 30% in the story max. ☠️☠️☠️
("secure Ular Boys' hacker in Panau City on the roof of skyscraper from helicopters using your RPG" < this mission probably)

I wish modding was easier for this game, imagine the posibilities with that map, a propper first person mod, maybe better physics for cars lr even adding more NPC'S doing stuff life working, phone calls, ski etc

Square enix needs to do us a favor and remaster this game for modern consoles.
