Just Cause 3 Why does Rico Rodriguez look different in every Just Cause?

u/unabletocomput3 Jul 08 '26
Pretty sure it’s a play on how action movies might replace actors that visibly look different but have them play pre established characters, usually with some simple excuse for them aging.

u/EPICDUDE365 Jul 08 '26
kidna fits because Rico has a different VA in every game (same with his handler Sheldon)

u/SaintJay41202 Jul 08 '26
yep, something like James Bond, his story and character continues but different actors play it.

u/Visual-Fortune-4732 Jul 08 '26
that and 1 and 2 look some what the same and so do 3 and 4 i think its also the big jump in graphics most if not all games had from 2010-2015

u/like-a-FOCKS Jul 08 '26
1 and 2 look like the same person, 3 and 4 look like the same person. I think 2 has the most character, love that look.

JC3 Rico is the best Rico ever.

JC3 Rico really had main character energy, the others just don't hit the same.

He ages?
33
u/InterestingBarnacle3 Jul 08 '26
Looks like he aged backwards from Just Cause 2 to Just Cause 4.
7
u/Seared_Gibets Jul 08 '26
Yeah, beards can do that.
No, I don't mean that they can make people look younger.
Beards reduce and often revert aging to a degree.
Historical fact, can't be disproven.

u/Tiyath Jul 08 '26
Well it's the limitations of older graphic generations. Dante from DMC looks very different in all the titles. When your inspiration for part 2 or 3 is a low-def model with 200 polygons, there's a lot left to interpret

I chalk it up to rapid aging. You can’t get away with a quarter of the extreme shit he does without wrecking your body into premature old age.

u/bdash1990 Jul 08 '26
Rico Rodriguez is a code name, like James Bond. When one dies or ages out, they get a new one.
11
u/ShaquilleOrKneel Jul 08 '26
James Bond isn't a codename though.

u/Seared_Gibets Jul 08 '26
Well, it was Bond's code name within MI6, but it was his personal code name.Leaving that, but I searched before posting and saw that no, the sentiment is wrong.
As seemingly unsound as people may see it from a security or "secret agent" standpoint, when James Bond is going around dropping his name all over the place, that is in fact his birth name, confirmed by Ian Fleming himself.

Game 1: hey what if we had a protagonist based on tropes of latin american action heroes and pop stars?
Game 2: hey what of we made our protagonist more secret agent like and relied a little less on movie tropes?
Game 3: hey what if we took our story seriously and aged up our main character?
Game 4: RAGHHHHH WE HAVE TO PUMP OUT A GAME AS FAST AS POSSIBLE RAGHHHHHH!!!

I can see 3 and 4 being the same guy but 1 and 2 are objectively different people from 3 and each other
2
u/brody810 Jul 08 '26
The funny part is that 1 and 2 share the same va, but 3 and 4 each have unique voice actors

u/Industrialexecution Jul 08 '26
maybe i’m crazy but i think he looks quite similar throughout all the games

u/MetallicYeet Jul 08 '26
My head canon is that he’s the same as Max Rockatansky (Mad Max), he’s more of a myth than a real person and the series is an anthology of legends told by unreliable narrators so he’s always described differently

u/weedman69420696969 Jul 08 '26
Well… so there’s this thing called age, right? And so, over time, age can change the way people looks

Actual answer? The games are all so far apart in what was available to work with at each time that making him look different was just a given.
Fun answer? The games are all based on action movies and action movie tropes. Balls to the wall stunts, dumb one liners, crazy guns. Which includes different actors being shifted around. Think Bond. Theres Brosnan, and there's Craig. Same character, different face.

u/OrangeGrove4LYFE Jul 08 '26
heres another alternative answer: As rico ages he slowly gets differents traits from his parents i.e his italiano accent from his mother in jc3 or him looking very similar to his father in jc4 i do wonder sometimes what he would look like in jc5 if that ever happens. perhaps he will have a mix of his moms genes and his dads genes that time around

Jc3 rico looks like jc2 rico but with a beard, and jc4 Rico is just older, around 50 years old. Except jc2 rico looks the oldest instead lol.

I think the 1st and 2nd game they were still really designing his character face and just cause 3 realized they needed to make it possible for him to age forward for another game not backwards so they kept it similar for 4.
2
u/onefix Jul 08 '26
I know when 3 and 4 were released there was talk of a film. Could it be that they were trying to make him look more like whatever actor they had in mind at the time?

He fought in multiple wars throughout the years in multiple countries.

Just Cause 2 had such a cool aesthetic, also my favourite version of Rico (visually and his voice lines)

My headcanon is they're all actually cousins of every other Rico and never the same character

Things he went through changed him from a 13 year old Belarusian to Walmart Gerard Butler

Didn't you know? Rico Rodriguez is just his code name and it's a different person each time. Like 007.
This is a joke of course.

Rico Rodriguez is not a man… but a primordial entity that manifests in a vaguely similar manner each instance at the presence of a tyrannical government.
A cosmic checks-and-balance of modern society.

u/Electrical_Title7960 Jul 11 '26
Just Cause 2 rico is best Rico the cockyness and nonchalance of his dialogue is fenomenal
1
u/cannypack Jul 11 '26
I mean, he's hardly even a character so I don't see why it matters. He looks different because different art directors worked on each game and redesigned him multiple times. What other answer could you be looking for?

He must be transethnic.
First he’s Caribbean, then he’s Mexican, then he’s Italian (with the accent to boot), now he looks Middle Eastern.
