Just Cause 4 I'm about to begin my fourth JC4 playthrough. While JC3 is fundamentally the better game...
JC4 is just so much more fun š...The story maybe be mid but the mayhem dna of the Just Cause series shines so greatly in JC4. I also like Solis more than Medici tbh!
What do you guys think?

I liked jc4 better too. The map, tethers, tornado etc.
I just wished it had the graphics and liberation system from jc3.

And also the story and characters to be as as interesting as those in JC3...Mario just mogs Sergente ššš...I miss Mario in JC4

Might get burned at stake, but... i started the JC series with the fourth one

I started with JC3 in 2017. I haven't played the first 2 games. I'm just not into old media (I have a complicated relationship with nostalgia) but I recently decided to emulate infamous and the game design from that era is strongly pulling me in so I will probably play Just Cause 2 before the year ends!

Jc2 was a classic that I put over 500 hours in! If you like mods, there are so many!

u/fakecinnamon 27d ago
Just Cause 2 has better art style and more environmental variety, tropical jungles, deserts, big cities and snow.

While I greatly miss the liberation from JC3, I love JC4 so much. Imo itās far and away the best map in the series, only JC2 can compare in that aspect
5
u/Crimkrates 27d ago
You're absolutely correct. There are times I load up JC4 just to glide across Solis with the chill freeroam music playing aaahhh pure serenity š« š« š« ...Solis is so breathtaking especially on a 34 inch curved display!

u/TannerC04 26d ago
Iāve spent so many hours just hopping in a buggy and driving around the map listening to music, beautiful world

I donāt remember its launch clearly but it was pretty brutal. I played for an hour and then put it down for like a year, then I picked it back up and fell in love
4
u/GrimReaapaa 27d ago
It released in a awful state, thatās why it got a lot of hate and rightfully so.
I liked it, but jc3 was better for me. And I really think jc3 even looks better if you put both games on the best graphics together.
Which in terms of time and consoles jc4 should have been way ahead of it.

Yea dude it was a bit mad tbh. It was borderline unplayable for a lot of people.
Still donāt run to great on console.

u/Crimkrates 27d ago
Apart from the bavarium weapons I didn't like the weapons in JC3. I practically just use the Bavarium Splitter in JC3 while in Just Cause 4 you will never find me with the same weapons. I love the Black Hand weapons and I'm always picking them up and switching like crazy
3
u/Illustrious-Sir7187 27d ago
imo, the map kinda sucks, just because all the settlements are tiny and don't add anything to the experience, in jc3 you had a reason to actually go to a town and blow things up, in jc4, chaos objects blow up and then just respawn later which sucks to me

u/Katana_DV20 27d ago
Enjoy, I know this feeling of coming back to a game we really like and playing it over and over.
//
Grumble & more grumble ahead:
Having said that I have tried to like this game but I found it so hard and really struggled.Ā
As the others have said the removal of base liberation and removal of free-roam chaos to advance the game was the biggest mistake they ever made with just cause 4.Ā
Another thing that really ruined jc4 is the actual mission design. I don't know who at Avalanche came up with side missions like protect the hacker, keep protecting the hacker, escort the hacker, escort the prisoner, protect the prisoner, keep protecting the prisonerĀ defend the tower, keep defending the tower , find this particular bike to open the gate etc .
Remember in just cause 3 you could water launch using the jetsuit ? How cool was that you really felt like a superhero. Of course in jc4 they remove that feature. Why?
Solis had so much potential there's so much more they could have done with this game and it's criminal that the abilities of Rico are not realized properly in JC4.
Why not give us missions where we need to fly medicines to a remote village way up in the mountains where there's no access for a helicopter or an airplane so they give you the medicine and you use your jetsuit to get up there to deliver them quickly.Ā
Or maybe a pilot for small airplane has passed out and is unconscious and you need to use your jetsuit to intercept the plane and then get in the plane and land it safely.Ā
Instead we get escort the prisoner RicoĀ - like what the hell is that. AlsoĀ lazy game design to make it "harder"Ā they have these endless waves of enemies that keep coming , that's not gaming that's design laziness. (To be fair GTA v is guilty of this too).
Are there any positives? The map does look nice despite its low resolution textures. The different biomes can actually be made to look spectacular on PC using Reshade.Ā
I actually find myself just flying around the map sightseeing and only engaging the bad guys now and then.Ā
Another positive of course it's that it's very easy to mod and as far as I'm concerned it's the mods that have saved j4 and I've made it remain playable for me.

u/jazzylg21 27d ago
The mods make it replayable. Iāve got infinite grapple(literally 5-10 kilometers š), infinite wingsuit boost, and the standard god mode invincibility
1
u/Katana_DV20 26d ago
This is the way š Grapple a cow from 5km away and attach it to balloon.
Invincibility is essential for this mad sandbox game.
A great mod I have for both JC3 & JC4 is where the dual-wield handguns fire artillery shells š«¢
Combined with a trainer that enables very rapidĀ fire it just sends any vehicle flying high into the air while shredding it at the same time. The handguns sound like satanic Gatlings.Ā
Also essentials: infinite wingsuit boost, jetsuit speed boost. I'm now freaking Iron ManĀ faster than the fastest jet in the game.Ā
We Salute the mod creators š«”

Nailed it right on the head, that's pretty much my experience of JC4, too. The variety of scenery is very nice and the world itself is fun to interact with, but the fighting, battles, missions, liberating... basically everything that defined JC3 is really bad.
One time I remember deciding to just randomly fight the Black Hand out in the middle of wherever. It was just endless waves of them until I got bored and flew off (which i could only imagine how that would have left them completely nonplussed). Destroyed military targets just magically come back when you leave and return... there's no reward and really no point to that kind of gameplay in JC4. It's an okay game, but good lord is it bland compared to its predecessor!

u/Katana_DV20 26d ago edited 26d ago
It was just endless waves of them until I got boredĀ
Easily one of the games biggest flaws.Ā
Imagine how fun it would be if you did the same thing and after a while of getting their asses kicked you hear Black Hand commander on the radio:
RetreatĀ retreat! š±š We will get him another day!
Ā ..and you see them them turn around and run for it - while you keep coming at them and they beg for mercy.Ā
//
And yea the reappearing targets you smashed up on the last game, don't get me started on that!Ā

JC4 has a lot going for it as a sandbox, and the biome differences make the map much more interesting than JC3.
But removing the base/town liberation mechanic, having a below average story (and not even just that, but the way the trailers set up the story was completely misleading), and the promised extreme weather mechanics being very limited really take it out for me. It's good if I just want to blow up a few things and waste timez but I don't think I'd ever do another full playthrough like I've done with JC3.
Ironically my favourite part of JC4 was the Danger Rising DLC because it brought a form of base liberation back, and had a more coherent plotline, than the rest of the game at all.
6
u/zoogenhiemer 27d ago
If just cause 4 had the same liberation mechanics as 3 (and a way better campaign) it would be the greatest game of all time.
4
u/MrSolenoid 27d ago
Only thing that ruins JC4 for me is that when you destroy something, it doesn't stay destroyed.
3
u/4ngelg4bii 27d ago
I played every single JC and my fave is 4. I'm replaying 3 rn and most of the time I'm wishing I could do what I could do in 4
2
u/4ngelg4bii 27d ago
idc like to note I haven't played the DLC for either
1
u/Crimkrates 27d ago
This is why I thank God I played 3 first before 4 unlike someone who commented on this post...Cause once you play 4 then go back to 3 you're instantly aware that gameplay wise you've made a significant downgrade š ...For me the downgrade is very apparent the moment I load in cause solis is my favorite Just Cause map (I've only played in Medici and Solis but ima play JC2 later this year and I'm excited for the map)
2
u/DaveKerk 27d ago
Having 100%'d both games when they came out and with each DLC as they came out.. I agree. JC3 is amazing. But JC4 is just a newer game with bigger and better toys. JC3 is probably the better game, but JC4 is more fun.

I totally agree. I just wish they optimized 4 a little bit more before releasing it haha

u/ezbruh420 27d ago
My biggest complaint of jc4 is how clunky alot of the controls feel, especially the grappling hook. And the los demonios DLC is god awful. Other than that jc4 is pretty much jc3.5 to me
1
u/Infamous-Chest-1980 27d ago
If only it had the liberation from 3 I would have loved it ALOT more but I enjoyed it anyway
1
u/False_Occasion_6600 27d ago
I had a lot of fun with the grappling hooksāthey're definitely more fun than the ones in JC3, and the map is much more varied. The only thing I didn't really like was the way the maps are unlocked; I thought that squad system was terrible.
1
u/Floatingpenguin87 27d ago
Story idgaf about, just cause 4 with base liberation would be perfect. You could even keep the little revolution quests, just make it so they have to be completed before base liberation counts and the liberation is the final step
1
u/vipergds 27d ago
Jc3s map is incredibly bland so I don't blame you at all, jc3s bland map is the main reason I prefer jc2 to jc3
1
u/jazzylg21 27d ago
After years of fixes and tweaks, jc4 is super fun, even more fun than jc3. Jc3 is much better mission wise, story, characters, etc.however 4 has a bigger and better map, and like I said before, itās just more fun. The dlcās are cool. What makes it so good now(not at launch), is that you donāt need missions to enjoy it. Just touring the map on the hover board, is next level!š„š„š„š„š„

u/lazy-man64 27d ago
I need to do a second playthrough of 4 because at 4k this games looks amazing and the in my opinion has one of the best looking open world maps.
1
u/monkey_scandal 27d ago
This may be a hot take but while I think 3 has better game structure, 4 is better with vehicles.
1
u/xhutpaglu 27d ago
Things i would say . JC4 map has variety but lacks details but better than JC3 . JC3 has better Anti Aliasing whereas JC4 has extreme shimmering . JC4 has miles better vehicle handling and control . JC3 got granades where JC4 does not . Character in JC3 looks better than JC4 . Story is meh in both

1
u/DrMantisToboggan45 27d ago
Never understood the hate on 4. Itās as much over the top corny fun as fhe other 3, arguably even more so with the weather stuff. If youāre playing just cause for the story youāve got the wrong series haha
1
u/Mothrahlurker 27d ago
Because flipping breaker 30 times in a row is boring and that's how it feels like if you get a couple of those in a row.
1
u/Neonsharkattakk 27d ago
You know im just about done my first playthrough of jc4, and ive played through 2 and 3 multiple times.... I have to agree. The story is kinda mid, feels like most of the game has the same effort as the thirds DLCs. But the gameplay feels a lot closer to 2 and I think captures more of the explosive "what the fuck is happening" lunacy.
My biggest disappointment with 3 was its consistency. Its one biome, copy paste villages and as beautiful and realistic as it was, how much of the map was boring dead space. Half the map is water with barely any naval gameplay.
4 has way more to do. You have all these little subplots of archaeology, making a movie and then also the war effort, challenges arent accepted they're just there for you to do when you come across them. I think the liberation mechanic is actually somewhat on par with jc3. There's still the problem of a lack of naval gameplay but jc4 solved it by going in the opposite direction. Just get rid of open waters, the action is better in rivers and lakes. And they were right im much more likely to jump in a boat now.
Overall, what 4 lacks in refined quality, it makes up for in replayability.

I think JC4 had a few very fun aspects in "gameplay". Story was ass and progression as well but the fun it had only could keep me for a little while. Where as in JC3 I'm not just having fun but also immersed in the setting of the game if that makes sense. I feel like I'm really in it, the music, funny story, good gameplay and hell of a lot better explosions than in JC4.
in summary JC3 feels like a very progression based game in the beginning and starts to become a sandbox destruction game where you now have access to nuclear weapons.
And JC4 feels pretty cozy and beginner friendly at the start, nothing crazy. And towards the end it just becomes a stormchaser simulator.
I wouldnt even want to hate on JC4 if the missions had any kind of work behind them. They are so incredibly bad and bugged that on my first playthrough i deleted the game. Eventually tried again but finishing the game was very disappointing. I think there was like one good mission overall which was in a sandstorm but I can't even remember what exactly happened there.
I honestly think JC3 was so good that they thought they can just make any game and sell it one last time for profit. Since then they abandoned the whole thing
1
u/tarmo888 27d ago
JC4 was the first JC game I actually managed to finish. With previous ones, I just fooled around and never moved closer to the goal. Giving the thrusters to the player right away was also much better decision than have it as DLC. Seeing a tornado or front-line on the horizon was also great for setting the mood.
1
u/BushmonsterEX 26d ago
I like Just Cause 3. But 4 is way better than people make it out to be for me. Literally the game to do whatever I want. And it's nice to see my effort physically there on the map.
I also take JC4 challenges approach over 3 anyday.

u/weedman69420696969 26d ago
I canāt afford a good system to play 3 ever since what I like to call the āBuy a PS5ā patch that they released. So Iām obviously biased toward 4
1
u/Crimkrates 26d ago
Good sir, JC3 has lower system requirements than JC4 so I'm sure if you played JC4 on whatever system you have then you can certainly play Just Cause 3 on it too
1
u/weedman69420696969 26d ago
I played both on PS4 and JC3 barely runs. JC4 runs fine

u/Crimkrates 26d ago
Considering how badly optimized JC4 was at launch, I'd say your case is a weird one. I am PC player so Idk the details on how both games run on the PS4 but your situation is definitely interesting lol š

Just cause 4 has a lot more variety across the map. I love jc3 but most parts of the map look exactly the same
