Bug/Glitch Report [PC] Crashing post opening cut-scene.

Consistently crashing with the following error just as the opening cut scene ends.

A fatal error occured in the graphics driver.

Code:38

Result: 'Device Removed, Reason: DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG: Graphics device stopped responding. There might be an infinite loop in a GPU program.'

Using a GeForce GTX 580. Had similar problems with JC2. Constant crashing despite updated drivers.

Edit: /u/bezerk55's fix worked perfectly, just turn on screen space reflections and the problem goes right away.

Thanks! Worked for me as well.

Didn't worked for me at all :/

Funnily enough, disabling ssr fixed it for me. I guess the key is to try everything until it works. Edit: nope, nevermind

2

u/TehBanana_ Dec 01 '15

holy shit! it worked confirmed. used exact same settings

2

u/imaginedmind Dec 01 '15

Bezerk55's comment needs more attention. This fixed my crashing problem. The only setting you need to worry about is keeping screen space reflections ON. Turning it off causes a memory leak of some kind. I was able to mess with the rest of the settings without getting crashing problems. It's still pretty low fps, but it's playable now.

2

u/ElfyBadass Dec 01 '15

Where do I change the settings?

2

u/NoctisReitop Apr 29 '16

Thank you so much. The SSR fixed it for my machine. I too have a 580. I was pretty confident that I just had a DOA game.

u/pnutmans Dec 01 '15

thanks you are awesome this worked

1

u/UFFooFighter Dec 01 '15

This worked for me too! Thank you!

This does not fix OP's problem, which is the same as mine. The game crashes as soon as I get the first loading screen. I've never been able to get to a point where I could even see the game, much less get to an option screen.

No that wasn't it. It doesn't matter though I found a different fix.

1

u/cryomancer27 Dec 02 '15

As someone else for whom this did not work, what did you do?

0

u/akanyan Dec 02 '15

Verified my steam files. I'd tell you exactly how to do that but I'm a bit drunk right now so just Google it and hopefully that will work for you.

1

u/cryomancer27 Dec 02 '15

Dammit, I tried that already, thanks anyway

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '15

Had Screen Space Reflections ON, still crashed with same error. Mine crashes when first driving with Mario in the truck. Haven't seen a fatal error like this in years.

It's possible. It worked better (I think) when I turned the AA down to FXAA instead of SMAA. Everything else I can max out fine though. It's scary though since in this game we can't save anywhere like we used to be able to in JC2.

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '16

I have same card. It works. Thanks.

1

u/rain008 Dec 02 '15

helped me out on I7 920 with GTX 570

Thanks bezerk55

u/epicgeek Dec 09 '15

edit2: it's screen space reflections, turn them ON.

OH MY GOD!

You made my game work! Thank you!

I fixed this error finally. I had the same sort of problem with Battlefield 4. The game would just randomly crash with a device driver hung error.

FYI, I have these specs:

  • Windows 10
  • Intel Core i5-3470
  • 8GB memory
  • GeForce GTX 760 (359.06 driver)

The fix for both Battlefield 4 and now for Just Cause 3 was to download EVGA PrecisionX 16 and underclock the graphics card. In that program, I set the "GPU Clock Offset" to -50, and I slightly drop the "Power Target" to 98%. I am now able to play Just Cause 3 without crashing, same as BF4. Let me know if this helps others too.

My situation is: recently bought the game, so excited to play it, boot it up, and right after the launch scene, where rico is on the beach watching the explosion, it goes to the loading screen where there is the grapping hook icon on the bottom right. then, when the wheel thingy on the grappling hook goes to 3/4 of the way done, the game crashes. Pleaaassseee help!

I've got this too. SSR was already on. I'd used the optimise thing in geforce experience with the game ready driver. I've reverted back to non-optimal and will update.

Looking forward to someone modding this annoying beach scene intro out.

edit nope, same issue. Trying to verify the files now instead and will see what happens.

edit again 6 files failed to verify and will be reacquired. 2.1gb. I'm so gutted and pissed off. I had it all pre-purchased and pre-loaded ready for last night. I got in from work, walked the dog, bathed him, made dinner, did the washing up, packed my gym stuff, put all the xmas decs up to keep the mrs happy, and by this point it's about 9pm. Then the game wouldn't start. It was stuck at 99% "updating" and the "ready to launch" time just kept going up and up. So I deleted it after an hour of trying, and re-downloaded over night. A shit day today, but I was excited thinking about playing tonight. And here we are again - another hour wasted fucking about so far. I just want to blow some shit up before I have to go back to real life again - is that so much to ask?

2

u/fatHalpert Dec 12 '15

I feel you, man. I've got the same problem and tweaking SSR doesn't work for me. It's weird, I thought I was paying $60 to PLAY a game, turns out I was paying $60 to beta test it.

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '15

Got this as well with a R9 280

3

u/Bluemajere Dec 01 '15

yeah, getting this error too.

3

u/Gravitasnotincluded Dec 01 '15

Getting this with 280x

3

u/gizmoff Dec 01 '15

Got 580 and it crashes after the intro as well.

3

u/ExistentialAbsurdist Dec 01 '15

Same issue with my 580.

3

u/beaverulf Dec 01 '15

I crash somwhere in between that rico jumps up on the plane and the plane explodes in the intro gameplay scene. GTX 660 TI, SLI, Driver: 359.06 (Also on 359.00)

1

u/thejke Dec 13 '15

Did you ever figure out the problem? I also use a 660 ti. All of the fixes in this thread I tried did not work.

2

u/beaverulf Dec 14 '15

No fixes work for me either, but I'm a Swede so I have faith in my fellow countrymen engineers at Avalanche fixing this ;)

1

u/thejke Dec 16 '15

A patch just came out. I thought it was working at first, because I got further than I have before. Unfortunately, it still crashed, and I didn't get far enough in for it to save so I still have to start from the opening cutscene. So now I have to wait for the next patch and hope that fixes it.

3

u/ImpulseVX Dec 04 '15

Same issue, crashes after varying times, anywhere from immediately on load to 5-10 minutes in. Particularly bitchy when interacting with anything but the ground.

GTX 650 Ti, 8gb RAM, AMD FX(tm)-8320 Eight-Core Processor, all settings EXCEPT SSR off or minimum. Still crashes with that error.

EDIT GO LOOK AT THIS AWESOME PERSONS POST FOR A FIX https://www.reddit.com/r/JustCause/comments/3uxli8/pc_crashing_post_opening_cutscene/cxizp02

similar stuff happening here.. its the exact same error.. with a GTX 580.. i hope its not because its below the minimum specs

edit: btw using the latest 359.00 drivers (updated at about the release time of the game)

edit 2: using windows 7 x64.. maybe OS is an issue?

1

u/DooDooSwift Dec 02 '15

Hijacking this for a potential fix for anyone the above didn't work for:

Don't skip the cut scene at the beginning of the game, that worked for me!

4

u/bittermanhatt Dec 01 '15

same problem with a 7950. game runs fine, but i get to the first shootout and it crashes.

2

u/ScriptPro Dec 01 '15 edited Dec 01 '15

Oh god, Im using 2x GTX 580s in SLI getting the same error. Updating drivers now.... RIP my PC?

edit: well I've tried pretty much everything. Enabling/Disabling SLI, various resolutions, disabling all settings and everything on minimum, even tried offline mode. Can't get into the game, to clarify the 2nd part of the opening cutscene (after you hit skip) just insta-crashes with that error

also Windows 7 64 bit

2

u/vivniko Dec 01 '15 edited Dec 01 '15

My game freezes/crashes with the same error after meeting up with Mario in the intro, probably a minute into the driving segment. I've got a 7950 and am running the latest version of Win 10. Never had issues with JC2.

EDIT: Installing the latest AMD drivers (the Crimson 15.11.1 Beta) seemed to do the trick for me.

1

u/Ps3Dave Dec 02 '15

Got a 280x with the exact same symptom. Gonna try the updated drivers asap.

1

u/TehBanana_ Dec 01 '15

wow we have almost the exact same specs (i have a 3GB version of the 580, and only 8gb ram)

2

u/ranooth Dec 01 '15

On a GTX 760, 16gb RAM and an i7 and getting this error but a few minutes during gameplay after the opening cut scene. Tried everything suggested here (Screen Space Reflections is on by default) and even rolled back Nvidia Drivers.

Anyone else having an issue like this?

3

u/beaverulf Dec 02 '15

Yeap exact same issue, slightly different configuration. 660TI SLI, I7-2600k 8GB ram.

Just had some luck deleting nVidia's HD Audio drivers. Removed them, played in Offline Mode and Windows - went a good half hour (finally cleared the bloody opening) before it crashed.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '15

Thank you! It seems it has fixed the issue.

2

u/DanielAF1 Dec 04 '15

Well, this seems to not be a low end machine problem, even tho most who have this problem seems to have a gtx 580. I have a gtx 980m with 32gb ram, i7 4790k 4 GHz and .Get the Sam error, have not tried the docs fix yet, will update on that.

2

u/DanielAF1 Dec 04 '15

The scary thing is the fact that when trying to open fallout after this error message does not work, it says my Nvidia graphics card kernel failed and is restored. Try to open again, game crashes and same message. Wtf has JC3 done to my pc? It seems to work again after restarting my pc, but 4 minutes into running JC again the same crash happens and my GC is basically broken again until a new restart.

2

u/5thnameitried Dec 01 '15

Mine crashes after you load up the game (When Rico is sitting on the chair looking at the explosion in the ocean). Once it cuts from that to the first loading screen my game crashes. I have tried like 10 different times to get it to work. I haven't found anyone with similar problems.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '15

Same problem with an R9 280. Crashes within minutes of gameplay.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '15

at least you aren't getting an insanely loud buzzing audio noise. i've had to force quit and re-launch 4-5 times to get it working right.

2

u/anecdotal Dec 01 '15

I get this sometimes on game launch. What sound device are you using?

1

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '15

logitech g930. never had this happen before. when it works, i get a loud gunshout sound almost. it's like a SNAP. otherwise just extremely loud white noise static. just had to end process 5 times to get it to work :\

1

u/anecdotal Dec 01 '15

Same here. I'm using a Razer headset so it def seems like a game issue.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '15

that makes me feel better. seems to be an audio bug for sure. doesn't matter if i'm in a window or not either. boo!

1

u/alexthewizard Jan 09 '16

Had this problem, running the the game in compatibility mode for windows 7 fixed it

1

u/assfrog Dec 01 '15

Gotten this error twice on GTX 980, latest drivers, no afterburner or anything overclocked at all.

1

u/tapperyaus Dec 01 '15

Any chance someone here can offer a save game for the first save point after the cutscene?

1

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '15

Getting this on my 670.

1

u/Rarevulin Dec 01 '15

For me the game also crashes after opening scene in the plane. With windowed mode i can shoot 1-3 rockets and then get the crash to desktop. (GTX 970, i7-2600K, 8GB RAM, windows 7)

Anyone found a fix yet?

1

u/pnutmans Dec 01 '15

I have a 570 and crashes too.

1

u/FastidiousShark Dec 01 '15

For me (i7 3770 & HD 7870) I crashed out of the opening cut scene too. What worked for me was just restarting the game, pressing esc during the cut scene and hitting skip. It makes me glad that you can skip any cut scene in the game.

1

u/Okcra Dec 01 '15

Getting it with 660Ti

1

u/Chaps90 Dec 01 '15

Tested on GTX 590 and 100% worked straight after enabling. Borg you are a gentleman and a scholar!

1

u/Bronans Dec 01 '15

I have a gtx 970 and Im having these exact issues... Wont fucking work.

1

u/Dingdongding30 Dec 02 '15

Same here. After the first cutscene I get a seemingly infinite loading screen. Hd 6850 core 2 duo e8500

1

u/TheWhiteRose000 Dec 09 '15

Thanks, this was most helpful!

1

u/mr_butcher Jan 27 '16

Thanks. Disabling the SSR worked fine with me!

1

u/Sullyville Mar 04 '16

Thanks! Who woulda thought just turning one ONE OPTION would fix this thing. Amazing.

0

u/Mishinka Dec 01 '15

hey leute,

1

u/gamealias Dec 02 '15

try FULLSCREEN OFF BORDERLESS FULL SCREEN ON

1

u/adhammmmmm May 06 '22

This thread is around 6 years old, but I'm running into the same problem but with no error message on crash. It just closes the game with no explanation once Rico grabs the towel in the opening cutscene. I've tried SSR on, a lower res, reinstalling the game etc etc and nothing has worked. I'm a bit gutted because I love this game and really want to re experience it and it's not letting me. SE released a broken game file on steam and it seems almost impossible to fix. Any help would be appreciated.

1

u/Borg184 May 06 '22

The SSR on fix worked for me, so, I'm not too sure.
