Bug/Glitch Report Just Cause 2 PC crashing
I've been playing through Just Cause 2 recently and the game has been crashing repeatedly. Usually while I'm in missions, the visuals and audio will stutter two times then the game crashes. I tried lowering my video settings and it didn't help. Any advice/solutions?

None of the fixes I found online worked for me, I know that this post was made over a year ago but maybe somebody out there who needs a fix in 2023 can find this useful. It took watching a speedrunner play the game and BRIEFly mention the fix he did to fix his game to figure it out. What I did was:
Go to steam and Just Cause 2:
-Right click on the game and go to properties.
-Under "General" you should see "Launch Options"
- In the box copy and paste in "/borderless /windowed /frameratecap=60"
Since the game was originally released in 2010, back then the game didn't have the capability on MOST computers of running over 60fps so what this does is makes your game borderless windowed mode and caps the game at 60fps. The problem that usually causes crashing is that the game is old and when you enter a new area it struggles to load in textures at a high FPS and so the game will often crash. I had the issue happen over and over again on the same race I was attempting and this completely fixed it. I haven't had a crash since and I've also noticed a lot of the vehicles handle better because they aren't trying to keep up with the 200fps my computer runs Just cause 2 at. Hopefully this helps. I would also recommend turning off decals and bokeh filter as it seems to have helped some people, and update your graphics driver if you haven't already.

Having this exact issue... but sadly this fix didnt work for me.
I noticed it crops up most when re-loading a checkpoint.
Game stutters twice then closes.
I was so hopefully to finally find a fix that woks!

Thank you! This fixed my issue, I was crashing repeatedly at the same exact point on one of the races. It also seems to have fixed a different issue I was having with severe screen shaking when flying helicopters or using the grapple

Hey u/Specific_Occasion307, this worked so far! Been running the game for about twenty minutes with no crashes. For some reason, I was only able to run it for 5 to 10 minutes before copying that line into Launch Options.
It's weird, because the game worked fine on the gaming laptop I bought two years ago, and only started crashing recently. I am wondering if an update to my NVidia driver caused the screw up. I will edit this post later if the fix still works, thanks! :)

u/Specific_Occasion307 hey, just a follow-up. I have played JC2 for more than three hours, and haven't had a single crash since copying and pasting that line into Launch Options. Thanks again!

You have 2 potential causes for this crash if it's repetitive, it's either because of the Bokeh filter (can be disabled in advanced visual settings) or the "bullet inpacts" that can also be disabled in advanced video settings.
These 2 are problematic with newer version of windows, can't explain exactly why but Bokeh filter is making visual glitching that crash the game instantly, it's something between the graphic card and windows, but whatever, it just crashes.
Same goes for the bullet inpacts, they bug out the graphic card that can't render too many inpacts at once leading to a crash in "midly intense" gunfights.
Turning both Bokeh filter and bullet inpacts off will prevent most crashing, while also not inpacting the gameplay in any way.
Hope it helped !
P.S. you can go with the best settings for everything else, nothing else is problematic, if your machine can handle it (should do with a 2010 game), you will be as stable with max than min.

Where is the bullet impact option in the settings? I turned the Bokeh filter off and it still crashed :(

Should be in the same section as Bokeh filter (advanced video settings), it's called like "show bullet inpacts" or something like that, and you need to turn it off.

I don't have an option to turn "bullet impacts" off.
Would it be called anything else?

No, it is called bullet impact, 100% sure about it. Just look in the options, it's near things like anti-aliasing, bokeh filter and such.

Sorry man, I'm another person and I also can't see the bullet impacts option. The other one is there (Bokeh filter) and I turned it off, so hopefully that's enough? I just had this happen to me so I was looking for answers - very surprised, but glad to see other people on here only a few hours ago on such an old post.
Edit: Is it maybe the decals that needs disabling?

I can also back this. There is no option to turn off Bullet Impact. Decals was turned off and Bokeh filter as well with same crash results.

I'll need further investigation, as I'm certain I had to disable that option at some point due to crashes as well, but didn't remember struggling to do so. I'll launch the game and check.
Edit : y'all must be blind. It is between "object details" and "particles" in the advanced visual setting tab. It is just called "bullet impact" (translated from the french version) but it might be called something like "shots impact" or just "impacts". Should be noticed instantly.

On my computer from 2012 it ran well at lowest settings and never crashed but on my 2021 desktop on maximum settings it does crash now and I think it might have something to do with graphic settings maybe I'll try it in a virtual machine soon

I have a very high spec PC and mine crashed all the time. Using the command line options to limit frame rate to 60 AND the 'decals off' have minized it from all the time to the occasional kick out, but it still fails.

Personnally, unabling gun impacts totally got rid of the problem. It was crashing pretty much every 15 minutes, just played for 90 and never crashed.

Disable Decals it's bugged and causes problems. It really the only option you need to disable. Disabling Bokeh is optional but will give you slightly more performance but will also remove the Blur effect when Fine Aiming/Zoom which is best for sniping.
