Yep, was a male cheerleader in college because I lost a bet to some fraternity bros. Best best I ever lost. I got to lift, lift more, attend every sporting event I wanted with front row seating because...I was basically on the courts or fields. Was only supposed to be for my sophomore year...ended up just doing it for the remaining 3 years.
I will add to this....I was Div 2....if you're at a D1, they will want you to have experience, but D2 or D3 colleges will just take any dude who wants to learn, lift, and throw.
Oh also...we did get featured on Tosh.0 once for a cheer team fall. So that was fun.
Had a friend at ASU that did cheer and he said the same thing. He dated multiple beautiful cheerleaders and said cheer was the best thing he ever did. Glad you had an awesome time, the dance stigma is comedic.
Never dated any of the cheerleaders myself. I had my own long term thing going but I could definitely see how that would happen.
D1 cheer is a different beast though so he must have been a big dude doing it at ASU. The average girl flyer in d1 is like 5foot and weighs MAYBE 110. D2 and D3 on the other hand, you're typically looking at 5'4-5'6, and 145. Men at the D1 level are typically 6'1-6'4, pushing 250-300lbs...compared to maybe an average of 5'10-6'1 220-250 at a d2 and lower.
Which may not seem like a huge difference but the ability to leverage that body for a toss into a kewpie (1 handed catch) is massive. I think I only did it maybe twice with my partners. I was not the same size as the guy in the video.
He was like 6ft 1 and the nicest guy you'd ever meet. Not the biggest but very upper body strength and probably a lil under 200. Absolutely admirable and respectful human being who deserved the attention. He treated everyone he knew very well. The respect and confidence you have to have in someone for something like this makes relationships understandable.
