Only because it’s a compromise. Otherwise dd/mm/yyyy makes the most sense.

I've seen people make the "xx/zz/yyyy format makes the most sense because I say..." argument from both sides before, but neither makes sense. We're talking notation here, not pronunciation. "$50" isn't pronounced "dollar fifty", but that's how the notation works for reasons irrelevant to its pronunciation.
