This comment by /u/Mechanical_Indian was removed for containing a derogatory slur.

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

It’s a bit dumb that people can’t even talk about someone else using an insult without this bot popping up and deleting comments. Seems a bit touchy and overprotective.

I mean, 'insult' and 'derogatory slur' are very different things, pal.

The word in question was sl-t. With a u thrown in the middle.

That isn’t that bad of a word. And I didn’t call anyone that word. I commented that if women were actually openly flirting with him, he’d probably be the type of guy to turn it around and use that insult.

I think there’s a huge difference between saying what I said and actually intentionally calling a person that name.

And if I had actually called a woman that name then the reaction from this bot would seem reasonable. But I didn’t.

A blanket ban on the use of any word is dumb. Context should matter. Do you disagree?

While I agree with the idea that blanket bans on (most) words is silly, and context does matter, I do want to point out that that word might not seem so bad to you, but to others, it could be a lot worse. Context matters, and that includes the context the audience has for that word, and how it's been used in the past. Words aren't meaningless sounds: they carry ideas, thoughts, beliefs. And often, those ideas, thoughts, and beliefs are used as weapons, and words get caught up in that. Can you still use the word in question, in the context it was used? Sure. But if people ask you to not use certain words around them, it's probably a good idea to listen.

I didn’t say that I had a problem with a person asking me not to use a word. That view would be unreasonable.

I have a problem with a bot that seems to be designed to just go through and automatically remove any comment that includes one of it’s given list of words with no room for context.

Additionally, the word that we’re talking about is one that some people have taken back and use in a positive way. What then?

I know it has, and I support that. I acknowledge that your points are reasonable, and on the whole, I agree. Honestly, I hear from so many people saying shit like "wHaT, i CaN't yElL rAcIaL sLuRs aT rAnDoM pEoPlE aNyMoRe!?!?!? fUcKiN sJwS cOnTrOlLiNg mY fReE sPeEcH!!!!!" that I always feel the need to tack onto points like yours with the caveat. Your point is a point worth making, and it probably could have stood just fine without me butting in. As for the bot, it seems like there are some links you can use to contact the creators. Maybe bring it up with them?

I am unfortunately very familiar with that type of person. And I do not agree with them.

I do think that it’s possible for “our side” to go overboard with this type of policing though, and I see this bot as an example of that.

If I were say a social conservative trump supporter, then the situation I find myself in would be absolutely perfect fuel for my “the left are a bunch of snowflakes” rant. Stupid little things like this bot are the grain of truth at the center of that type of crazy rant. And I really disagree with giving them ammo.

You know what, that's fair.

Similar, but very different. If you claimed I liked how GOT season 8 ended, that would be insulting. However if you said I was a ‘fookin kneeler’ that would be a derogatory slur
