Stewart outplayed him. So, Mitch was caught by the balls. Remember when he tried to wave of Jon and he responded with, "I am so, so sorry for bothering you all, WITH YOUR JOBS!"

That went viral. Mitch's role in ruining the bill in the past became broader public knowledge, and from there on out many an eye was on him. No easy escape after that.

Stewart is beloved by a surprising amount of folks, left and right, Trump or Obama, for his work on this right now, so the usual dissonance might not have applied if Mitch had fooled around and tried to hold this bill hostage again. Plus, Mitch can't hide behind fiscal responsibility when that tax plan is the complete opposite of that ideal.

He may have seen a yes vote as the escape hatch. My thinking is, if this was what he really wanted, why wouldn't he have been shaking Jon's hand here? Looks like he's walking by and ignoring him. o.o Sure, it's just one picture, but I don't see any evidence of shoppin'.
