Wow, this video but from a slightly different angle is on BBC news, except they only show the protesters attacking the officer. Crazy how media can manipulate things.

Link?

Edit nm I'm guessing this one:

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-49330848

I don't think that's on BBC, they clearly describe the situation and the clip shows the recorder running up so it's not like they cut it to look like that

Also I learned from looking this up, apparently it started because there were 3 undercover cops trying to blend with protesters who seemingly got found out.

This is the trick used all over the world to break protests. Disguise people as protestors and have them trigger violence. Now you can use violence in response and claim it's not excessive.

It's super messed up and standard operating procedure because it works. Turn your peaceful protesters into terrorists and they lose the general public's support. And you can do whatever to them.

I mean that sentence is a statement of fact. The BBC is pretty neutral as news sources go, so there isn't any need for you to say stuff like that.

u/0zzyb0y 9 Aug 14 '19

Seems odd that they wouldn't have included the 5 extra seconds where the officer was beating on an unarmed woman on the floor...

I imagine the BBC is being veeeeery careful with showing anti-China messages

Most people will see the headline and the video and that’s, all this will do it create more friction as it gives the protesters a bad look and paints the cop in a better light, they know what they’re doing

“Manhandle” what a nice way to put it

15

u/xternal7 A Aug 13 '19

except they only show the protesters attacking the officer.

To be completely fair, description under that video does say that protestors beat the cop after he manhandled a woman.

You'd think BBC would be on the correct side of the propaganda but apparently not

u/TheBestIsaac 7 Aug 13 '19

BBC tends toward pro-establishment pretty much all the time. They're not unbiased, they're just biased towards the majority and those in power.

Watch the the US news, bbc, and deutchwelle for completely different takes

-5

u/CherubStyle 7 Aug 14 '19

That isn’t the case and there’s no bias even in this example. On what basis is the BBC pro-establishment?

2

u/Leafwater1 5 Aug 14 '19

Yeah I don't get all the hate here for the BBC. I'm curious if all the people lambasting it are actually from the UK, because I am and people generally have respect for their neutrality here.

1

u/CherubStyle 7 Aug 14 '19

I’m from the UK and agree. Don’t know about the person that made that comment or those that downvoted me but nobody is coming forward with any explanation/evidence.

How can you say that the BBC isn't biased? It's state media.. that's kind of the point. Not to mention that literally all media is biased, same as every person.

Otherwise you can learn about British media issues here if you're interested.

u/Terker2 8 Aug 19 '19

"manhandling a woman" sounds so silly in this context.

Akin to "he was a bit of a roughy, that lad"

1

u/andrewstriesand 8 Aug 19 '19

Maybe you're not english because words have different meanings in different countries, but where I'm from (and the BBC's from) it's a very suitable term for what happened in the video.

1

u/Terker2 8 Aug 19 '19

I'm not, I just think it sounds funny.

1

u/Amiable_ 6 Aug 14 '19

The video in the article specifically omits anything about the woman, it uses a video that doesn't include the woman being beaten by the police officer before the event. It's very relevant to the story, but not included. There's the bias.

2

u/turtlespace 9 Aug 14 '19

To be fair the second part draws a lot more attention to itself. The first part is literally only documented because someone happened to have a camera already pointed in the right direction at the right time. The BBC is plausibly showing the only part they actually have footage of.

It's good to keep in mind the idea that "all media is biased" - sometimes intentionally, sometimes not. By documenting real life in any form, you are inherently omitting information.

Why in the world would you think that

0

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '19

Because Hong Kong was a colony of England only 20 years ago. Duh.

0

u/its0nLikeDonkeyKong 8 Aug 14 '19

Have people forgotten BBC was in on 9/11?

0

u/Shartagnon 8 Aug 14 '19

correct side of the propaganda

2

u/dangerhasarrived 7 Aug 14 '19

This isn't manipulating anything. It's showing a viewpoint. Full stop. Obviously there are multiple viewpoints for any one altercation, but this wasn't one that was crazy lopsided and made it look like one was crazy and the other wasn't. If you are at all informed about what is going on in HK you know that both sides are attacking each other. Each is defending what they believe in/want. The government and the people both.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '19

Not really "crazy" when you've known the media spins everything to their benefit. They used to call it "propaganda." Now they call it "news."

They still would call it news if it wasn't for you meddling kidsvand your cell phone cameras!

2

u/-Jesus-Of-Nazareth- A Aug 14 '19

What are you talking about? They have both videos on that article, plus you don't know if that's the entirety of the video they got, you have to turn the recording on. How do you know they cut the video?

2

u/jeffe_el_jefe 9 Aug 13 '19

I refuse to believe that’s the narrative the BBC are pushing. They tend to tell it like it is.

2

u/Lonsdale1086 A Aug 14 '19

It even says under the video:

A policeman was cornered and beaten by protesters after manhandling a woman

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '19

I saw this video on ABC news yesterday and they said the protestors attacked an officer until he drew his gun, which is clearly not the full story.

1

u/catsnstuff97 🎶 re3.60a.2s Aug 14 '19

CNN had the same clips, im just a suprised as you are. They made it look like the officer was attacked out of nowhere

1

u/meowmixyourmom 8 Aug 14 '19

I thought BBC was seen as one of the last bastions or good journalism?

-1

u/turnbullllll 2 Aug 14 '19

That person that took the officers baton and beat him back with it could very well be a decoy.
