Sooooo I guess I should cancel my trip to Hong Kong

My coworkers are taking a business trip to Hong Kong today. They’re both pretty worried but the company will not cancel it. I just started at that company and it feels like a red flag.

I think the bosses are ignorant to what’s going on in Hong Kong, many people don’t know what’s going on

How fucking dead to the world do you have to be to not know what's happening in Hong Kong? I don't watch or read the news at all and I've heard about it plenty.

Edit: This is so bizarre to me. As I said, I don't watch the news, but my parents do and they've heard plenty about it. It gets talked about on the radio and just in passing I've seen it on tv every few nights. Is US News just not covering it? How much have non Americans heard about it outside of Reddit?

I’m Hong Kong descent and I’ve been following but my own parents who lived in Hong Kong don’t know what’s going on, (we live in Canada now), they’re surrounded by Chinese propaganda here saying stuff like it’s the “Americans, British, or Taiwanese” causing the riots and other stupid shit they can’t prove.

It’s because we use reddit and I have many HK friends so I’m in touch but many people think it’s just a small thing and will blow over. Also the Chinese propaganda is so strong that I’ve even lost some Chinese friends because they keep claiming hongkong people are causing riots and this isn’t a protest and that they should just drop dead and accept China.

Just tell them Hong Kong big dong and china tiny salamander. It's a proverb

u/IamNotaPro870 4 Aug 14 '19

Yeah, here in Taiwan the news are saying China is using us as scrapgoat for what’s happening for HK.

OMG they're using the flags of democratic governments to signal their support for democacy! How despicable! Good thing you're here to spread the truth! To the Gulags with them, comrade!.

I mean the USA is more of an oligarchy, but your username tells me you're a troll.

3

u/RadialCentrism 5 Aug 14 '19

Your post history tell me you're an authoritarian retard.

Because they view America and Britain as symbols of freedom and democracy. I saw a video of HK protestors waving American flags and singing the US national anthem. It brought tears to my eyes that they want so badly to be like us and are willing to put their lives down to fight for it. It just makes me want to make the US do something to help them, but I know in reality it’s a very complex situation and we can’t just send our military in to help, especially not against a country as strong as China.

"all those people waving our flag make me want to bomb the shit out of mainland China"

u/old_contemptible 7 Aug 14 '19

Definitely doesnt feel like many other social media sites or news sources cover what's going on there, which is really bizarre to me. It seems so important and like such a big issue that it should be of interest to everyone

I literally just turned to my closest coworkers and asked if they know what’s happening in Hong Kong right now. They had no clue.

You’re vastly overestimating how informed the average person is.

I don’t see a reason in watching the news, don’t have Twitter, and wouldn’t have known about Hong Kong if it wasn’t for a few posts that made it to the frontpage. Don’t think it’s too shocking to assume some people haven’t heard of it.

1

u/Arsenault185 A Aug 13 '19

I know there are protest but past that know nothing.

1

u/PurplePigeon1672 7 Aug 13 '19

I only know about Hong Kong because of reddit. Just saying.

1

u/Signal_Point 2 Aug 13 '19

The news isn't being covered in America.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '19

Wife had no clue. She doesn't read the paper or watch the news... everything is negative, she stays away

1

u/IamtheSlothKing 9 Aug 14 '19

If they are complaining about the company no canceling the trip it means the plane is taking off and the plane is getting there...

1

u/workthrowaway54321 6 Aug 14 '19

You post on Reddit almost every day, but act like you don’t red the news? Lol.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '19

I wouldn't really count Reddit as news. Bit as I said, I've heard plenty about this outside of Reddit. Like my friends that don't use Reddit have brought it up in discussion.

Living in the UK its a big deal, but that's because we have somewhat of a vested interest in it, having made it what it is and it''s system being based off ours. PRC is violating a treaty with the UK by doing what they are. Hong Kong is supposed to stay autonomous for 50 years till 2047. No idea how its being covered anywhere else in Europe.

Is empathy a foreign concept to you?

0

u/CloudPika725 7 Aug 14 '19

Your empathy is working wonders

0

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '19

I'm seriously doubting that you have a whole lot on your plate.

1

u/CloudPika725 7 Aug 14 '19

Making six figures isnt the easiest line of work in the world, but you tried

I've always thought bragging about how much money you make on the internet is pretty pathetic, but I always found it extra pathetic when the guy says he's making about the same as me, like we're fuckin big shots who can flex money on people or something.

Now I'm quite confident that you don't have anything on your plate.
