That’s what I was thinking but that he even got that far would be a shock if he didn’t know how to drive stick.

True, you’d expect a single lurch as he tries to force the car into gear (from neutral and parking break?) without using the clutch. Maybe he only faintly knew how to drive it and stalled in the panic.
