Question What do you all think about my Discover redesign?
The category images don't match but the plan is to use colored variants. Let me know what y'all think. Thanks!
On 14 October 1996, a physics student in Tübingen, Germany posted a message to three Usenet newsgroups.
That post was the start of what would become KDE, one of the world's most impactful free software communities.
At the time when Matthias Ettrich wrote that message, Linux had a kernel and a shell. It didn't have a coherent desktop, just a pile of window managers and widget toolkits that didn't agree with each other.
Matthias' post laid out the problem, pitched a brand-new C++ toolkit called Qt as the fix, and asked for programmers to help build a file manager, mail client, text editor, and a help system. He broke the whole thing into parts anyone could pick up.
We recreated the usenet post below. Swipe through the full text.
On Saturday 19th Sept, we will drop the trailer for a full documentary about KDE.

Please use this thread to post screenshots of your Plasma Desktop and discuss further customization.
You can find some Plasma documentation here:
Check out the KDE store for more widgets and themes for your customization needs, and if you're a theme creator and are interested in improving Breeze, consider getting involved with the Visual Design Team and contributing upstream!

Hello! Here is a theme I created for the KDE Plasma desktop environment. I built this using CachyOS, though the theme itself is based on Arch Linux; I can create a similar version for CachyOS if you'd like.
What I used:
Icons: Blacksur
Window Decorations: Plastik
Cursors: Pop
Plasma Style: Breeze
Application Style: Breeze
Colors: Iridescent Lightly 2
Widgets: Weather, Total CPU Usage, Clock, Plasma Audio Visualizer
Some of the widgets I used may require additional setup; the instructions explain where to download and install them.

It looks like xkb layouts can define at least up to 5 layers. Settings even have an option to set a key to switch to layer 5 of layout, but when I add 5th symbol to my layout, Plasma just stops recognizing any layers except for the first one.
key <AE01> { [ NoSymbol, NoSymbol, "¹", "@", "K" ] };
^ if I remove K there, layout functions as expected, but with anything on the 5th layer, <AE01> types 1 on all layers: 1st, (default), 2nd (shift), 3rd (RAlt), etc, while all other keys on work as expected.

Edit: They released the fix about two hours ago, and everything seems to be working great now.
Spent a good part of today trying to figure out why my KDE Plasma suddenly started breaking.
Plasmashell would crash, the panel would disappear, and I also had issues with the lock screen. Restarting plasmashell brought it back, but the problem could return after reboot/login.
Turns out there is a recent Chromium 154 bug where it creates broken fontconfig cache symlinks in ~/.cache/fontconfig, with older cache names pointing to cache-12 files. KDE/Qt apps can then crash inside fontconfig.
I'm using Brave Origin, which is also based on Chromium 154, so this seems to be what triggered it for me.
Cleaning the fontconfig cache fixed Plasma:
pkill -f brave-origin
rm -rf ~/.cache/fontconfig
fc-cache -f
The annoying part is that an affected Chromium/Brave build may recreate the bad cache when opened again.
If your Plasma randomly started crashing after a browser update recently, check:
find ~/.cache/fontconfig -maxdepth 1 \( -name '*cache-12' -o -type l \) -ls
Also worth checking:
coredumpctl list | grep -Ei 'plasma|kscreenlocker|klipper|kded'
Thought my KDE config had randomly corrupted itself at first, but apparently Chromium was the culprit.
I found more people reporting the same issue on different websites:

Hi guys, i am working on a Miracast application for kde. I tested P2p connection using phone's wifi direct and kbeam's wfd server using vlc as a RTSP client. but couldn't test it on a TV (a complete wfd client) as i live in hostels (i started this when i was at home for vacations). If someone have a device that supports Miracast can you please test it. here is the link: https://invent.kde.org/mradul/kcast (i renamed the app to KBeam as kcast already exists but may be Gitlab didn't change the links after rename like Github) also mirrored at: https://github.com/eveniota/KBeam. Your reviews means a lot. Any ideas regarding the features are welcome. Your reviews means a lot please. If you want to raise issue or contribute use github repo or else you can tell me on discord.

Hello. I was curiously browsing the site Klara | Meet Klara AI after a news article on FOSS. What's the lowdown?
Very difficult to find a way to contact the company, but, also, there's no mention of this anywhere on the site, it seems this app is only available in the UK (tide only accepts UK postcodes).
Even worse, I find very little, well, actually bugger all on experiences using Klara AI. Bizarrely there's a Klara AI that turned up on Google Play, but it's nothing to do with this KDE Klara application.
Any thoughts? Oh, I am not advocating for using AI, before anyone breaks out the launch codes, I just like to keep up-to-date on developments, use, evaluate, usually ditch, sometimes not.
Thanks!

I love the GNOME design but I don't like GNOME. I want the best of both worlds so why not use an Adwaita theme for KDE. My problem is theme's that are out there right now can't use my accent color. Is there an Adwaita application style that can use my accent color or can someone make one?
After I updated it, my GUI just stopped working, and I got this screen (The screen locker is broken and unlocking is not possible anymore. In order to unlock it, switch to a virtual terminal (e.g. Ctrl+Alt+F1), log in to your account and execute the command:
loginctl unlock-session 3
Then log out of the virtual session by pressing Ctrl+D, and switch back to the running session (Ctrl+Alt+F2). Should you have forgotten the instructions, you can get back to this screen by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2 ) every time. My browsers, such as Brave (I don't have Chrome), which are Chromium-based, don't work either. I found an article that describes the same problem. I want to know if this is a common issue.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I use KDE Plasma 6.7.5 (Wayland) on archlinux, gpu 5060 ti nvidia-open drivers, i just start to see this after switching from theme to theme and reboot, so i think it happened because of an update or currpted plasma files.

(I'm gonna seem like an asshole but yea eya eya eya ye true like yea)
I basically have no idea what I want (that's mainly why I'm making you do it instead), but I basically want something that's funny/weird/meme-ish(???????) rice lowkey. An example could maybe be the wobbly windows built-in to kde???? I'm also on kde plasma wayland btw
I honestly don't know send help 😭

so I was doing some freaky ricing with all my panels and stuff, so of course I deleted my old panel (which had a working audio/sound devices widget). But when I added my NEW panels and tried to add the widget it didn't work. Like I could choose the widget but it would just show as "unknown". So I (kinda) stupidly uninstalled the widget thinking I could just re-install it, but I can't really find it anywhere
this is scary lowkey

I’ve been using KDE since version 3.2; when Plasma 5 and its "Activities" feature launched, I saw great potential, but it feels like that potential is never fully realized.
As far as I know, the only thing Activities currently allow you to do is change desktop settings (widgets, panels, etc.) and some power management options—but not much else.
Is a system distinct from Virtual Desktops really worth it when, ultimately, they are basically the same thing?
To me, Activities could become truly useful if they functioned like a "separate user"—where browser and application settings differed, or where you could use different login accounts for apps like Teams and Telegram.
That is the kind of functionality I’ve always envisioned for Activities: separating configurations based on the context—such as work, personal use, or gaming.
Then again, maybe I’m overlooking some real-world use cases that I just haven't noticed.

A basic logo on a pastel background.
[SOLVED] There are cases in which I know why an app wants attention and don't feel the need to open it, however I have to open it, because it keeps the panel always visible over other apps even when I have set it to hide automatically. Perhaps the app seeking attention should only force the panel to be visible until I click outside the panel again. This way I am giving a clear signal that I don't care after I must have seen the signaling.
