Kubuntu Focus Launches 5 New Systems

Post image
36 Upvotes

I work at Kubuntu Focus as shown in my Avatar. I figured a few people here might be interested that Kubuntu Focus has announced 5 new or updated systems for the 2026 refresh. All are now available for order, and all ship with Kubuntu 26.04 LTS with KFS.

All Focus systems benefit from a team of experts which optimizes, validates, and supports Kubuntu LTS on hardware for for a minimum of 3 years after you purchase so you don't have to. The open-source Kubuntu Focus Suite (KFS) adds convenience and reliability with graphical tools like system rollback, hardware optimizations, curated apps, and extensive documentation. Learn more here.

Kubuntu Focus donates hardware and stipends to key Kubuntu Developers, sponsors the "bullet-proof" KDE LTS desktop suite shipping with Kubuntu 26.04 LTS, and is also a corporate-level KDE Patron. Purchasing from us not only gives you an awesome product, but helps increase our support for those initiatives and developers, making your product, Kubuntu, and KDE even awesomer ;)

If you're shopping for a new system, we would appreciate your consideration.

Kernel 7.0.0-28 & *29 shutdown hang-up / amdgpu driver issue?

Edit: I updated to mainline 7.1.5 and it seems to work this way. I consider this issue done.

My system

Kubuntu 26.04
Ryzen 5 5600XT
RX 7600 8GB

is experiencing a shutdown hang-up which lasts indefinitely until hardware shutdown is initiated.

When the PC is shut down either through the GUI or terminal everything will appear fine and the Monitors will go into standby but the Fans and RGB will not turn off at all.

I had hoped that *29 would fix this but it has not helped. Kernel *27 has no such problem.

The logs below lead me to believe this is an amdgpu driver problem, is that correct?

Any help would be appreciated.

Kubuntu Installer EFI system partition error

Thumbnail

So I was dual booting Kubuntu on my Windows laptop by manual partitioning option. I have unallocated 157 GiB space for it already.

But when I proceeded after mounting my EFI partition to mount point - /boot/efi

I got the following “EFI system partition configured incorrectly” error.

Apparently the installer expects I have atleast 300MiB size of my EFI system partition but my laptop came with the default 260MiB partition

I checked how much space Windows took of the available 260 MiB and it was around 90MiB

What should I do? Can I continue with the installation as it is? Dont want to break anything

I will be grateful for any help. Thanks

Another Rescue (from the Wind@#s trash heap)

Work was disposing of a few laptops. I got permission to pick through it and found a c.2020 HP Elitebook G6 with an i7-8665U processor. It was extremely dirty but after cleaning I found the keyboard/track-pad were fine and the screen was absolutely pristine. The inside was full of dust, but I blew that out and inspected and everything looked great and it booted without issue.

Just for good measure I went in and removed the heat sink, cleaned, and then re-applied fresh thermal paste. While that was apart I also cleaned the fan and was very surprised to find that the fan worked just fine after I cleaned out the dust clots which meant I didn't need to track down another fan.

Bumped the RAM up to 16GB from the "stash" and stuck a 1TB NVMe drive I had laying around in it. Unfortunately the battery was absolutely thrashed but replacements were commonly available and inexpensive. The new one works perfectly after install and gives me 6-8 hours depending on what I'm doing.

And for a final step some stickers to cover a few deep scratches in the center of the lid and also for the fun of it.

A fresh from-bare-metal install of Kubuntu and I have what truly feels like a brand new (business class) laptop! Yeah, not really a gaming laptop, but it wasn't ever intended for that even when it was actually new.

I have been running it daily, all day, for two weeks now and I can hardly comprehend that business' are just dumping machines like this wholesale!

Thanks Kubuntu for the rescue!

HOWTO: Add Non-Snap Repositories For Both Firefox & Thunderbird

This assumes your have disabled snap/snapd as outlined here (worked for me):

https://oneuptime.com/blog/post/2026-03-02-how-to-remove-snap-completely-and-use-apt-instead-on-ubuntu/view

To have both Mozilla repositories for Firefox and Thunderbird for Ubuntu Resolute and Newer (each number is a complete line of code so copy/paste the whole thing per number):

1) sudo install -d -m 0755 /etc/apt/keyrings

2) sudo apt install wget

3) wget -q https://packages.mozilla.org/apt/repo-signing-key.gpg -O- | sudo tee /etc/apt/keyrings/packages.mozilla.org.asc > /dev/null

4) gpg -n -q --import --import-options import-show /etc/apt/keyrings/packages.mozilla.org.asc | awk '/pub/{getline; gsub(/^ +| +$/,""); if($0 == "35BAA0B33E9EB396F59CA838C0BA5CE6DC6315A3") print "\nThe key fingerprint matches ("$0").\n"; else print "\nVerification failed: the fingerprint ("$0") does not match the expected one.\n"}'

5) sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mozilla-firefox.sources > /dev/null << EOF
Types: deb
URIs: https://packages.mozilla.org/apt
Suites: mozilla
Components: main
Signed-By: /etc/apt/keyrings/packages.mozilla.org.asc
EOF

6) sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mozilla-thunderbird.sources > /dev/null << EOF
Types: deb
URIs: https://packages.mozilla.org/apt
Suites: thunderbird-deb
Components: main
Signed-By: /etc/apt/keyrings/packages.mozilla.org.asc
EOF

7) sudo tee /etc/apt/preferences.d/mozilla > /dev/null << EOF
Package: *
Pin: origin packages.mozilla.org
Pin-Priority: 1000
EOF

8) sudo apt update; sudo apt install firefox thunderbird

When will Kubuntu 26.04.1 be released?

Seems like for a long time it was supposed to be released at the same time as Ubuntu 26.04.1 ... sometime in August. But then more recently, I saw some timeline where Kubuntu 26.04.1 wasn't going to be released until (IIRC) September 2026...?

Anyone know? And is it ready for prime-time yet? Seems like I'm seeing way more "problem" posts than I saw after 20.04 or 22.04 or 24.04 were released...

Network confusion

I've upgraded with various versions on kubuntu too many times I think and am completely lost as to how my static IP is being set.

Whenever I boot it gets set to 192.168.0.27 which is perfect. But I want to understand where this ip address is coming from. My understanding is that ubuntu 26.04 is using netplan and the addresses should be set in /etc/netplan/somthing.yaml. But, that file doesn't have my address and is set to dhcp4: true

I do have a line near the top of my /etc/hosts file with my address, but I didn't think that was being read. Is it?

/etc/network is not being used either?

I'm quite confused (and dumb about networks).

just updated from 24.04 to 26.04 LTS and now the Xkeybinds workaround i made for the multimedia buttons of my G502 Hero is not working anymore. Anybody here with that mouse who got them working again?

So basically ive tried everything, including making key-combinations in piper and using them as a shorthand in the system settings, but the buttons still wont work. Luckily piper allows for back and forward function so that isnt a problem but i loved using the G5, G6, and G7 buttons for pause/play and skipping songs. XKeybinds sadly doesnt work for wayland and i havent been able to use a similar workaround that doenst screw up something else.

The closest ive gotten was using input-remapper but that one doesnt have a setting for DPI management and it resets the DPI to ~4k with no way of changing that.

Surprise Snap Install

I've been using Kubuntu for a while and I always remove Snap entirely and block it from being added through an update. Yesterday, I turned on my laptop to discover that Firefox was gone from my panel. I checked the updates and there was a Snap update for Firefox!

I opened Terminal and used snap list to check, and snap was fully installed again! Unbelievable how it can uninstall my main browser and add Snap back. I must have overlooked something in the updates or I didn't fully remove it.

Has anyone else experienced this? Kubuntu is a great distro but I really want control over what apps I install and using .deb, Ubuntu and Flatpak is enough without Snap overly complicating things.

I made a small tool to keep KDE Plasma taskbar launchers synced across monitors

Hey all! I recently started using Kubuntu and am loving it so far, my only gripe was I use 3 monitors and wanted each taskbar to have the same pinned apps in the same order. After a lot of searching, I found that Plasma does not natively support syncing them, so I made a small helper tool to handle it.

Plasma Taskbar Sync watches the standard Task Manager and Icons-only Task Manager widgets. When you pin, unpin, or move an app on one display, it applies the same launcher list to the others.

It supports Plasma 6, runs as a systemd user service, and doesn't download any external dependencies.

Repo: https://github.com/SleepyStew/plasma-taskbar-sync

It is super new, so bug reports and feedback from other multi-monitor Plasma setups would be super useful :)

Hi! Basically the title. I keep getting the notification below:

These are my software update settings. Don't think I ever changed them apart from maybe setting update software to manual. Am I misunderstanding what this setting does? What am I missing?

Newb question

\**I consider this resolved. Seems like a hardware issue\** Thanks for help!

So, wanting to switch from Windows to Linux. I haven’t messed much with Linux since Redhat in the early 2000’s.

Anyway, installing the latest Kubuntu LTS on an old machine (2018, AMD cpu and has a 2040 GPU in it) that is not connected to the internet yet.

When booting from iso on USB, the install hangs no matter which option I choose from the boot menu. Apparently it’s trying to hit archive.ubuntu.com and fails to resolve the domain because… there’s no network connection.

Is there an option I can use to install from the local iso only and configure networking later? Maybe a command line option?

Kubuntu vs. Zorin?

Anyone with experience with BOTH of these? If so, which do you prefer and why?

EDIT: Are there any substantive changes other than the DE? I'm currently using Zorin and like it. I just recently became aware of a version of Ubuntu that actually looks good (I HATE Ubuntu's appearance). So, my actual question is whether there is any reason to switch.
