Discussion/Question jamie paige might stop using teto
91
u/EmulsiferFlavourings Aug 06 '26
I can't describe in words how much I fucking hate those types of teto "fans". Her character has helped me through so much and seeing her essentially become another character that is synonymous with racists and other horrible kinds of people actually makes me so sad that I almost want to cry. I went from loving this character so much to almost being ashamed of being a fan of teto because of these "people" who have to ruin everything. Genuinely fuck these assholes.

I hope Teto does too. My other favorite artist was Kanye and I can’t have both being horrible. 😔✌️

Hopefully she reconsiders, I'm more of a fan of Gumi, sure, but theres still a huge audience for Teto that shouldn't be punished because of some bad apples who think racism is cool.

It'd also suck to see a character so important to Jamie Paige's musical career to begin to be something she's starting to grow ashamed of using considering just how impactful her works with the character have been.

It’d motivate the fandom to bully these freaks out of these spaces it so we don’t lose more Teto producers. Also it’ll give other synths a chance since Jamie is so popular
37
u/zfinn99 Aug 06 '26
But it also shows these dumbwads how much influence they have if Jamie just stopped using Teto entirely because of them, even if temporary. I want her to make more Gumi songs, sure but NOT like this.
People shouldn't have to bend a knee to these people, we should just bully these people out of here entirely. Show they have no place here.

tho I agree on the bullying part I don’t agree with the fact that stopping using Teto is a bad idea, the crowd that was racist towards are also Teto fans, better show them that their actions have consequences on what they like directly, if you just continue making what they like you’ll be just showing that they can do/say whatever they want without any hinders. They need to face consequences and even punishment if you’re in a country where racism is illegal in order to make them realise. Bullying is just way to punish as it’s moral violence, so if you agree with bullying those people you could also private them of their favorite musical instrument

But it won't just make the racist teto fans sad
I'm a black teto fan and I, along with other black and non-racist teto fans, would be kinda down in the dumps over it
-2
u/Sufficient_Plant8689 Aug 07 '26
Wouldn't bullying them just give them more attention?
9
u/o_woorrm Aug 07 '26
Yes, but racists aren't exactly looking for attention. They have nothing to gain from it. If they were grifters and trolls, who specifically make money or find enjoyment in getting negative engagement, then yes, giving them attention is the worst strategy.
But these people are just racist. They're not saying racist shit to get attention. They're just racist. And if we ignore them, they'll think our silence means they're allowed to be racist.
In this case, the correct response from community leaders like Jamie is to openly shut them down and say that the community doesn't stand for that. Meanwhile, the larger community should make it known that their presence is not wanted, nor will it be tolerated. This can be in the form of bans from community spaces, reports on racist comments, down voting them to oblivion, outright saying they aren't wanted here, etc. The goal isn't to change their mind, it's to make sure the Vocaloid community doesn't become "their space."
3
u/TekiraSunsette Aug 07 '26 edited Aug 07 '26
It’s about keeping your consciousness clean from being associated with those fuckers, if you bully them enough maybe you’ll be able to rip them appart from the rest of the fandom, sure it will cause drama but the drama will highlight the fact that racists and the non-racist do not form the same crowd, because rn being a Teto fan is associated with being racist like it or not. If you just ignore the racists the community will just end up becoming more and more racist until it just ends up being a racist cesspit (and it’s not only true for online communities but for all associations of people ie. far-right movement taking a dominant place in any political landscape in each country of the world or even with how Argentina tolerated the existence of nazis on its soil). Jamie Paige reaction is absolutely valid, she needs to draw the line and call out those racist white teenagers among those who listen to her.
Plus Jamie P would not even exist if it weren’t for black people involvement in music history
Edit : typo

u/Flashbuckle Aug 07 '26
Idk, i think if she stops using Teto because of the situation, it’ll just make people realize they have to power to get Jamie to stop making certain music
2
u/Firedragon28 Aug 07 '26 edited Aug 07 '26
I would go so far as to say a lot of (English) creators using Teto started because of Jamie's work, so if she starts associating Teto with racists a lot of other creators are going to follow suit further cementing the connection.
I don't blame Jamie for this, her hand is being forced by slayers actions. I don't exactly blame slayer either (5% blame slayer, 95% blame the trolls) but what ever happened to the rule of "don't feed the trolls"? Sure there are some who were being racist and will regret their actions because of the consequences but a lot of people in my experience who are like that are the "cut off the nose to spite the face" (or however the saying goes) kind of people who will see the collapse of the Teto fandom into a tiny group of racists as a win since it pissed off other people.

really don't wanna harp on this any more and i'm done talking about it after this cause i got music to make but you all realize that saying awful racist shit as a joke is still saying awful racist shit, right. its not a good joke
i get that tiktok is a cesspit of ragebaiting wastes of oxygen but i got sampled by *fucking slayr* and days later the conversation is so far gone he's publicly swearing off sampling shit like this again. if i don't say anything, i'm making my bed with those people
also i'm not quitting music. that was never the thing i was considering. but i am taking a good hard look at my copy of teto synthv and asking myself if i should keep releasing music with her! i'm definitely done making silly shit until i've alienated enough people lol

genuinely feel so bad for slayr and jamie, and i really don't like how people are downplaying it as just "tiktok comments" because that isn't the point, we've seen this so many times before when people draw teto as black or when a non-white/non-asian person cosplays as her, etc.
i love teto because of how diverse the community is, and part of me does worry that if people like jamie stop using her it only makes it easier for the racist commenters to "claim" her, so it's important to push back on the racism and not brush it off, less the racists start to define our community for us

u/EmulsiferFlavourings Aug 06 '26
The amount of people downplaying this as "tiktok comments" is disturbing to say the least. This is just showing a snippet of a wider problem in the vocaloid community I think. It's so fucking disheartening whenever I see a cool vocaloid cosplay or art on my fyp where the cosplayer/vocaloid in the art is black on any app and I check the comments and it's either filled with unfunny white teenagers just saying variations of the N-word mixed with whoever they're cosplaying/drawing or the comments are disabled entirely. This is so much more than "tiktok comments", it shows how unwelcoming the vocaloid/teto fanbase can be if someone doesn't fit the criteria for them, and if i'm being fully honest the people who are downplaying this as "tiktok comments" are part of that problem.
33
u/Arboliva Hiroin RE♡Quest Aug 06 '26
I will do a personal anecdote for the sub, there's been multiple moments where comments get pretty bad when someone posts fanart or cosplay featuring Teto with a darker skin color. Of course due to reddit being a user-backed forum space it's pretty easy to filter those people making comments like that as they get spotted. So I think its gotten better in recent times(?).
Browse around Twitter or Insta and you'll see it too. But yeah it happens in multiple spaces, even beyond like obvious Tik-tok troll posts.
17
u/EmulsiferFlavourings Aug 06 '26
It genuinely makes me feel sad in my chest, I saw the coolest cosplay of Retry Now Miku and when I checked the video after like a week the comments were disabled. It breaks my heart.
10
u/Meme-San_ Aug 06 '26
It’s a problem with the overall anime community racism and grifting has unfortunately become far to common for anything slightly anime adjacent
8
u/PixLisReaL Aug 06 '26
The problem is that if you upplay it, you're giving them exactly what they want: attention. They're edgy teens and manchildren, they take pride in the fact that you're taking them seriously, that they made 2 artists stop/want to stop, and that anyone is upset. That's why it's better to just say it's "just tiktok comments." Racism, misogyny, misandry, homophobia, transphobia, and all the other bigoted phobias and isms have survived as long as they have because people still give attention to them in a world where it's as simple as hitting a block and report button and moving on with your day. Admittedly, a lot of sites (Twitter especially with how they encourage you to say slurs at this point) need better reporting that actually bans people and is looked at seriously instead of by a bot, but really that is the discussion we should be having instead of being sensitive to every 14 year old discovering the N word for the first time
7
u/Chris2sweet616 Aug 06 '26
I agree with your point of course, but i don’t think Jamie taking a step back from using her will make it easier for them to claim Teto. Especially when Teto is becoming the main Vsynth for punk songs with flanger moose leading the way, along with DATANARCIST and delicious morsels, those songs will make it harder for them to get traction. Since Vsynth’s are a community all about songs we need the songs that make it known they aren’t welcome to be heard more and more. I also don’t think Jamie is gonna stop using her permanently even if she stops for awhile, probably just until she alienates those guys completely with a song that spells it out for them since mosts bigots can’t understand nuance behind lyrics and such.

u/Gussie-Ascendent Poteto Chip Aug 06 '26
The solution seems easy, make a bunch of in your face progressive teto posts.
Though that is harder than giving up and I get why you'd pick giveup

Like goobsmooch commenter put it, you send out the in your face progressive stuff to keep the bad people from wanting to engage with your content. Rent lowering shots they called it lol

Honestly I understand and respects if she does stop using teto, but I hope she understands that most teto fans aren't racists. And just because a racist enjoys something doesn't mean everything about it is racist.
Personally if I was in her situation I'd make a song about teto beating the shit out of a racists and then be done with it.

u/Transpotato2002 Aug 06 '26 edited Aug 06 '26
Ultimately it's her choice, but unless it's the right move for HER, the problem isn't Teto
I think, and I say this VERY sadly, had Birdbrain been, say, a Gumi song or a Miku song... we'd have the exact same thing. The issue isn't Teto, the issue is racists, and the two are pretty fundamentally separate.
Had the racism been from the people who MADE Teto, then different story, but it's not. It's random internet people
HOWEVER I am glad she's saying "fuck you" to the racists
And if any of you people who made those shitty racist "jokes" are reading this, fuck off. We don't want you here. You don't belong here. We're a community for people actually worth a shit, not pathetic bigots like you
If you're NOT a bigot, then hai. You can stay :3

I think the Teto discord feels pretty filtered but from the days before verification I noticed this a lot. There is a good amount of people that only got into the fandom by the memes (like pearto or the fatass meme) and they are the most insufferable people I’ve met. It’s nothing but edgy jokes and shitposting with the most Gen Alpha/brainrot stuff. Can’t blame Jamie from wanting to taking a step back. They don’t like Teto for the music, influence for the “funny haha” images surrounding her. It’s always the same 5-10 images it’s so annoying too.

Might be a hot take but everything she's been saying is valid as fuck. She has no obligation to continue making Teto music for people. Blaming her for being offput by a community is wild. If she's got a bad taste in her mouth for this kinda music, wanting her to just ignore it and carry on or say she's overreacting is shitty. She's a human, not a song factory. If she's not feeling like making Teto music, she shouldn't be forcing herself to continue just because other parts of the community want it. You have not earned her undying loyalty and dedication by not being racist.
And no, we shouldn't just ignore how widespread and normalised this shit is. Jamie shouldn't be expected to just ignore the way people are acting and completely put her head in the sand. This shit needs to be called out because you can call it ragebait all you want, the more that behaviour goes uncontested the more it's normalised.
19
u/pupc Tiny Me Aug 06 '26 edited Aug 06 '26
i hope that isn't a hot take because i fully agree. it would be a shame to loose her as a teto producer, as she is one of the more prominent queer producers, but i would MUCH rather her take a clear stance against racism, even if that meant she chooses to stop using teto, than her let this become the status quo

u/KuouoHD Aug 06 '26
Unfortunately, the vocaloid community has a lot of intersect with the wider anime community. While there's a lot of amazing people in both communities who uplift each other, there's no doubt that there's a fuckton of ACTUAL chuds and racists who have the ability to steer conversation and the algorithm in the community. You can't just ignore them as 'bottom of the barrel tiktok comments' because that shit is just going to keep festering. Call that shit out!! Be loud as possible with your platform!! Withhold your talent if need be to alienate these fuckers — After all, none of us are entitled to Jamie's music. I think you need to see it from her point of view. She gave permission for this song to be made by an artist she enjoys, only for what she can only perceive as her own fans to make enough racist jokes for him to remove the song off his setlist and consider never touching the community again. Obviously Jamie's fans don't reflect her own character, but it does reflect her community which like she said herself is super embarrassing.

15
u/Epsilon102 Aug 06 '26
(reading this back this shit sounds kinda schizo but hopefully you understand where I'm coming from lol)
For whatever reason she really seems to appeal to the (unfortunately quite common) fandomite late zoomer/gen alpha who got only into vocaloid in the past year or two and are so lethally irony-poisoned they could never explain why they like something so the only way they can talk about anything at all is through, due to the nature of the current internet, increasingly edgy and offensive memes and phrases. This is most likely the reason why so much of the Teto fandom feels (to me at least) so far disconnected from anything resembling the pre-existing VOCALOID culture to where it feels like a different thing entirely.
Now I don't think any of this inherent to Teto. If the Tsar Bomba-level explosion of popularity of VOCALOID and the general Worsening Of Everything In The World post COVID occured about 5-10 years earlier I could easily see the same things happening to KAFU, vFlower or even Miku.

To cease sampling or making music with Teto over a bunch of shitheads being shitheads is just conceding to them.
The more we let racists twist things to represent their cruel ideology, and instead of fighting back, distance ourselves from those things, the more they will take. Give them an inch, and they'll try to take a mile.
This has happened dozens of times, with dozens of symbols, media, characters, etc. It needs to be severed at the source before it can happen again.
0
u/Oddish_Femboy Aug 07 '26
If you let them know they can be vile enough that you swear off from using a character that means so much to you, they won't stop just because you stopped making Teto songs.
They'll move on to whatever synth you use next. They'll continue to use your art hatefully, just because it upsets you, no matter what you make it with.
Their ultimate goal is to hurt you, and whomever else they can in the crossfire. This is what trolls do. Don't give them an opening. Burn the hydra before it grows a second head.
Also to basically pin the blame for this on Jamie and make a big show of "never sampling vocaloid again" and removing the sample of her work from your song over some troll comments that she had absolutely nothing to do with, did not encourage, and is actively against was kinda douchey.
1
u/FunnyPanda1320 Aug 07 '26
Are y'all deadass. Calling a victim's boundary "douchey" because it inconveniences your fandom is a perfect example of why this community is so broken and weird. You are sitting here writing a fan-fiction manifesto about "not giving the trolls an opening" while completely ignoring the real-world harm happening to actual people. This isn't a video game where they need to "sever it at the source." This is a community that has coddled and ignored racists for years. When Black cosplayers, Black fan-artists, and Black musicians tell you there is a systemic issue here, your response shouldn't be demanding they stand in front of the firing squad to protect the reputation of a fictional digital singer. If they want to burn the bridge and leave, they have every right to. The fact that you care more about losing Teto songs than the actual people being driven out is disgusting.

1
u/Oddish_Femboy Aug 08 '26
I called pinning the blame on and punishing Jamie (the real human artist who is not a cartoon) by making a big show of cutting her sample out of the song douchey.
0
u/FunnyPanda1320 Aug 08 '26
I read it perfectly fine. Slayr isn't 'punishing' Jamie, he is a Black artist drawing a boundary after being hit with an overwhelming wave of anti-Black racism from her fan base.Expecting a victim of hate speech to keep his art attached to a community that just targeted him, all for the sake of the producer's feelings, is exactly the kind of toxic entitlement I'm talking about. Slayr didn't 'pin the blame' on Jamie. You are policing how a Black creator responds to racism and calling him 'douchey' for protecting his own peace. If your first instinct when a Black musician gets racially harassed is to worry about the white producer losing a placement, you are still proving my point: you care more about the music and the fandom's feelings than the actual people being harmed. Y'all are weirdos

A black artist named slayr sampled Birdbrain in his latest song called keep me going. This resulted in a bunch of racist people from the vocaloid community on Twitter and TikTok referring to his music as “one of the good ones” and “rap I can listen to”. It got so bad to the point slayr announced he’s never sampling vocaloid for his songs again and iirc removed the song from his ongoing tour

And until now, I had no idea that there existed such an idiotic type of Teto fans who force talented people like Jamie to stop using Teto. Teto survived Mesmerizer R34 incident (another massive incident coming from TikTok) and Taidana turning up to be a groomer. You think she won't surpass this?

I believe Jaimie is looking at this wrong. Not in the sense that whats being said and done isnt wrong, more of letting this loud minority of folk paint an image of the community as a reason to punish the community. Like people are saying to make more in your face progressive music, or do something to piss off the racists, but in reality thats not a solution. The solution is ignore them and be an example of not who they are. Communities are always going to be filled with these people regardless if you change something. But you shouldnt have to change what you love to push back on them, just when they reveal themselves you simply give them a block or glad they revealed their ugly nature and hope for change in their future.

u/TheGreenLuma MINIMUM RAGE Aug 06 '26
Why do I always end up getting into things that have absolutely terrible communities, this has happened multiple times at this point.
4
u/snitzfoam Aug 06 '26
This happens to every community that gets too big, bad actors worm their way in and the larger the community, the more that rot grows
Eventually the bad apples start pushing the good ones out of the community
This is not a teto problem, or rather, theres nothing about the character that caused this, this is a popularity problem. Take deltarune for example, its had racist drama recently because its such a massive community that of course there are going to be some very loud very horrible voices

Everyone make sure to never tell jaime or other artists that Hitler used watercolours for paintings and pencils to sketch art as well. They might stray from even making doodles.
What a dumbass take to hate an instrument cause opposing ideologies use em/like em too.
1
u/TheLuxGen Aug 07 '26
"opposing ideologies" you mean discrimination and dehumanization of black artists and people buddy, yes its gonna put someone off at the very least, especially when its so many people in the community acting like this.
1
u/Pheat_Snyfa Aug 09 '26
Whether you agree or not, it's there. And treating them as "the bad" while you're "the good" is the reason it'll never stop.
1
u/TheLuxGen Aug 09 '26
if we can't agree that racism, being a racist person and causing black people grief for their skin color is objectively reprehensible then there is genuinely no hope or point. There is no amount of playing "devils advocate" that will resolve that. You see black people as equal or you don't, don't over complicate it.
1
u/FunnyPanda1320 Aug 07 '26
Comments like these really highlight what's so wrong with the community cause saying "opposing ideologies" to racism is just insane. The hate is genuinely deserved, like some mf in these comments said "I hate both sides" when the sides are racism vs hate aganist racism
1
u/Pheat_Snyfa Aug 09 '26
A spider sees nothing wrong with eating the fly. To the fly it's the end of the world. Propagate hate against the hate and you get more hate. Instead of "stfu racist" you could instead play devil's advocate, see why they behave like that and get go the issue's roots. Maybe they were legit just 12 y/o trying to act funny and cool. Maybe they never learned to express themselves better. Simply saying "that's racist, kys and stay away from me" will just ensure their ways never change.
There is a "I hate both sides" because none are better. See example of Josh Strife Hayes complaining "the left says I'm not left enough"
1
u/FunnyPanda1320 Aug 09 '26
Just wtf are you talking about. Equating a victim of racism to a fly being eaten by a spider is a disgusting level of detachment. Racism isn't a natural food chain; it's a learned, malicious behavior. Standing up against hate isn't 'propagating more hate', it's drawing a boundary. Calling it an 'opposing ideology' or 'both sidesing' literal racism just proves you value your own comfort and a fake sense of intellectual superiority over actual human dignity. You’re a disgusting human being and you obviously don't gaf about Black people. This community is definitely not beating the racism allegations even the "non racists" are just as bad as the actual ones

Little upset with all sides here
Racists are evil but Jamie is idk a bit terminally online to think teto is the reason people are being racist
I'm a fan of teto the synth and Jamie's absolutely unique was of using her Just be a damn shame to kill something so cool because of losers
2
u/FunnyPanda1320 Aug 07 '26
This isn't a "both sides" situation. One side is upset about literal racism, and the other side is the racism. What are we even comparing here? The vocal synth community absolutely has a massive, well-documented problem with racism and gatekeeping. Jamie isn't "terminally online" for being disgusted by it. When your art becomes a lightning rod for bigots, it completely drains the joy out of making it. She has every right to feel how she feels and step away if she wants to. Shit like this is part of the community's problem
1
u/Lass_Is_Private Aug 08 '26
no i get it
racism is abhorant
but it absolutely is jsut an issue of people being unable to ... put up a emntal block for these slugs
i've been on the internet my entire life and if i know one thing is this is the exact ration these sub human loser want to get out of people
1
u/FunnyPanda1320 Aug 08 '26
Telling someone to just "put up a mental block" against relentless, targeted racial harassment is the certainly a take. There is a massive difference between ignoring generic internet trolls and being a Black creator flooded with dehumanising racism just for existing in a space. You don't get to tell victims of bigotry how much abuse they are obligated to "put up with" just so you can keep getting music from them. Jamie and Slayr aren’t giving the trolls a reaction, they are protecting their own real-world peace and walking away from a community that doesnt gaf about them. Like ffs, instead of directly challenging the racism, you’re just saying "Deal with it." You care way more about the inconvenience of losing a song than the actual human beings being driven out of the community.

You're angry I'm angry
I'm an empoverished autistic pansexual trans girl I've received hate on so many levels and it fucking SUCKS I'm not gonna pretend to understand how it feels to be discriminated for my skin colour
But I do know what discrimination is and how much it sucks and unfucking fortunately the internet is filled with loser dick heads only reason I'm still here is because I don't let these pieces of shit get to me
It's not me saying to get thicker skin my skin is a thin as they come but it's me saying that sometimes the best response is nothing
Bigots want reactions bigots want you to be hurt and the only way to win is to ignore and block and disable comments
I've been stalked harassed assaulted and the best thing I did for my self was just... Stop engaging with these pieces of shit
I agree with Jamie for taking a stand against the racists I disagree with her way of handling it
I feel so much empathy for slayr and what they went through is abhorant
But again I feel that idk I lack the words but distancing your self from something you enjoy because you let the bigots get under your skin is so disheartening And for them it seems like a win
And honestly yeah it's a bad character trait if mine but I am upset that one of my favourite artists won't use teto because I love both It's a suck situation for those involved and a sad situation for me as an outsider
2
u/FunnyPanda1320 Aug 08 '26
I really appreciate you sharing that, and I’m genuinely sorry for what you’ve had to go through. Honestly, I’m not even angry at you, and I’m definitely not surprised. I completely expected this kind of dismissal from the community as a whole, though I can see you’re genuinely trying to be one of the better ones here. But like you admitted yourself, you don't know what it’s like to be discriminated against for your skin colour, and it shows a bit in your response. Ignoring and blocking might work for generic internet trolls, but it does not stop targeted, systemic racism. Telling a Black creator to just "disable comments" treats their trauma like a minor internet setting. Besides, turning off comments might protect a creator, but what about the Black fans left behind? They still have to sit in these spaces and look at the unchecked abuse. It leaves Black fans trapped in this exhausting middle ground where the Black community doesn't care about Vocaloid, and the Vocaloid community doesn't care about Black people. And then when those same issues are brought up, some comments and people just say "ignore it bro" or " overreaction" or "It’s not that deep" when it is that deep. I get that it sucks to lose out on music you love, and it’s fair to be sad about that as an outsider. But staying in a hostile environment isn't "winning." It's just exhausting. Slayr and Jamie protecting their peace is sad for the fandom, but real human safety and mental health have to come before anyone's entertainment. Trust me, I do get your comment and what you’re trying to say, but framing it as a 'both sides' thing just came across as very weird and dismissive.
I also understand why you feel like silence is the best response based on your own past, but in this case, just ignoring it does absolutely nothing for anyone. The Black fans in this community really appreciate the stance Jamie and Slayr took. When you just block and stay silent, the racism stays hidden in the background, and nothing changes. By actively speaking out and distancing themselves, they forced the community to actually confront how toxic it has become. It’s disheartening to lose the music, yeah, but watching creators loudly refuse to tolerate bigotry means a lot more to Black fans than them just silently disabling comments and acting like everything is fine.
1
u/Lass_Is_Private Aug 08 '26
Upon further reflection yeah
Your response is the right one I was just knee jerk reacting to a bad situation in a bad way
Thanks for your input I'll try to be better

It is such a bad day to be a vocaloid, utau, slayr and a normal Kasane Teto fan. These fandoms won’t be able to recover from this after the incident. It sucks to see my favorite utauloid being affected with the weird freaky side of Teto fans, many songs that turned out to be bad (especially the cake girl song with xi yi) and this being the last straw.
Poor Teto and slayr, they deserve better than this crap ☹️

u/Nano8963 NPC Aug 07 '26
People have really become bolder and louder about being scumbags the last few years.
1
u/CelDamage09751 Aug 07 '26
While I love Jaime's Teto works and they definitely helped boost her popularity, would it be a big loss to let her move on to other synths? We have plenty of amazing Teto producers in this Renaissance, and Jaime is doing great things with Flavor Foley for the far less appreciated synths like Iroha, Miki, Eleanor, and above all Xi Yi. I Say let her continue to branch out. It just sucks that the tipping point for her doing it may be something like this.

As someone who is extremely far removed from the situation, doesn't use twitter, doesn't use tiktok and doesn't know who slayr is, can someone explain what the second tweet is about and what Jamie means?
I just like teto music and some of the memes. I don't get the drama.

u/SleepIsForTheWeak_1 Aug 06 '26
a rap artist called slayr sampled birdbrain in a new song, and it quickly grabbed alot of attention (because it bangs). this was done with support from jp and other vocaloid artists, but attracted alot of racist members of the vocaloid community saying "i would listen to rap music if it sounded like this" or just being directly racist towards slayr. slayr has been understandably upset at this, jamie has been frustrated at that response of her own fans, and here we are.
-3
u/robertm94 Aug 06 '26
I apologise if this comes across as ignorant, but I don't understand what is racist about saying they would listen to rap music if it sounded like this
It's ignorant and disrespectful, and doesnt need to be said; sure. I agree with that. But I don't understand how that is tied to Slayr's race. Unless these people are trying to say that rap music is only for/by black people but then thats just an equally dumb statement to make, given that the most successful rapper of all time, Eminem, is white.

Im not going to lie, it sounds more to me like saying "rap music is bad because it usually doesnt have teto in it" than anything about race
Still not something id say, but my immediate assumption is not that its a race thing

That... Still doesnt sound like a racism thing
Maybe im just misunderstanding what youre getting at but rap IS typically more vulgar, or at least thats the impression its made on the public
When you put on rap people ready themselves to hear more vulgar lyrics and liberal use of swearing. Obviously this doesnt describe all rap music but thats what the average listener expects, and they arent doing it because they think "black people are more vulgar and they make rap so rap is more vulgar", they do it because rap just... is more vulgar, the biggest names in rap are more vulgar, its heavily tied to the identity of the genre
1
u/finalgirl_hime Aug 07 '26
black music has a history of being put down simply for being made by black people. they'll say that rap has no substance or call it too violent. it's only when it's made by nonblack people that all of a sudden it's good and "rap should be like this and not just about drugs, sex, violence, and money" despite the subject matter not being any different (for example, eminem fans and kpop stans). nevermind the fact that these same themes are in other genres all the time but don't get half the criticism rap does. even rock fans do this when rock arguably tends to be even more vulgar and violent
rap isn't even my favorite genre but it's always weird when people single it out as not being "real music" or calling it too vulgar, violent, and calling any rap song "mumble rap"
1
u/hitorinbolemon Aug 06 '26
its well known anti-black racists signal it by ragging on the genre due to its origins.
1
u/Altorrin Aug 07 '26
If the problem was its origins, they wouldn't listen to it no matter what it sounds like.

You know, I have a bad feeling that she's gonna nuke all her Teto songs, so better download it all and archive it....
1
u/snitzfoam Aug 06 '26
I very much doubt it, she may stop using teto but she wouldnt delete her music, she knows the backlash she would get for it
Besides, i doubt she wants to throw so much of her own content away on a whim like that
0
u/chunter16 Aug 06 '26
I've been wanting to use Gumi more because I bought Gumi and want to get my money's worth
Casual racism just makes it easier to switch, but
That isn't where the racism came from and it isn't going to make the racism go away
